Re: Switch Nindies Nominated Across Multiple Categories At The Game Awards

Frenean

The only parts of the VGA I care about are the game announcements, as I feel that the video game awards only serves to let these big AAA publishers stroke their own ego. It was great to see Breath of the Wild get game of the year last year (it deserved it), but there's no way a money grubbing soulless game like Black Ops 4 deserves any awards.

Also I agree that Celeste deserves GOTY, and I don't care if it gets it at these awards. It's GOTY in my book.

Frenean

Dang, this looks pretty good! I don't think I'll be throwing money down for the campaign seeing as it already hit its goal and I just pledged to Hazelnut Bastille, but I'm definitely looking forward to this game's release and I'll buy it then. This year has been stellar for indies on the Switch and honestly I think I'm mostly going to buy indies with only a few AAA purchases a year from now on. At least until the AAA industry gets its head out of its bum and stops making soulless cash grabs.

Re: Nintendo Was "Extremely Supportive" Of Nippon Ichi During Switch Development Of Disgaea 5

@tudsworth

Yeah, with your last point I totally agree and hope all major console companies go the Switch route in the future. I haven't owned a PlayStation since the PS2 because I got into PC gaming and only continued purchasing Nintendo consoles because I'm such a huge fan of their first party titles. However if the PS5 ripped off the Switch and was a hybrid I'd totally buy one. I just don't have a reason to purchase a PlayStation/Xbox when they're trying so hard to be a PC. Consoles to me need a cool gimmick to set them apart, and my Nintendo bias aside, the Switch has the coolest gimmick of any console I've ever owned.

Re: Review: Rogue Legacy - Generations Of Challenge Packaged Up In An Irresistible Roguelike

@neogyo

I just have beef with him saying that this game can't be a 9 even though he's never played it, and then comparing it to Diablo. They are two very different experiences and Rogue Legacy shouldn't be stuck at an 8 or lower just because a different reviewer gave Diablo a score. It's honestly very silly, especially when no two people have to base games off the same grading scale. This is all subjective and Jaxon needs to realize that.

Re: Review: Rogue Legacy - Generations Of Challenge Packaged Up In An Irresistible Roguelike

Frenean

Have you played this game? Or are you telling me that your judgement of it not being a 9/10 is coming out of your butt? A 10/10 game is not a perfect game, no game is. At the end of the day it comes down to taste. I'm not really going to get into this further with you, the fact that you use subjective terms like "better" and "good" after using the word objective to describe a game shows me that you don't really have a basic grasp of the English language. At the end of the day, Diablo 3 and Rogue Legacy were reviewed by two different people, reviews that are subjective in nature. What you may deem a 9/10 I could consider a 7/10 and vice versa. Rogue Legacy is sitting pretty at an 85% on Metacritic, so it's generally agreed upon that this is a great game. I don't really know why you don't consider this game a 9/10 other than you not having played it and judging it based off of a gameplay video. At that point it just seems like it's not your type of game, and that's fine.

Re: Review: Rogue Legacy - Generations Of Challenge Packaged Up In An Irresistible Roguelike

@JaxonH

You're letting subjectivity cloud your argument with the last point. Rogue Legacy is a different type of game than every single one you've listed. Furthermore, I've played this game, and it definitely deserves a 9/10. It's one of the most polished roguelites out there. Tight controls, great art style and soundtrack, challenging but fair, everything about it is well made and I can't really think of any complaints. Instead of judging this game on its own merits you're comparing it to out of genre AA and AAA games and deeming it an inferior product with no real reasons except that it's indie and those games aren't. (By the way I've played most of those games and they're all great) Higher quality graphics and voice acting also do not make a game automatically better than other games. The art style in Rogue Legacy is intentional and it does it well.

Also, you bring up bigger publishers being able to afford voice acting as if having more money to develop your games means you're putting more love into your games than those without. That's like comparing A Link to the Past and Breath of the Wild and automatically deeming Breath of the Wild better because it has more technically impressive graphics and voice acting

A game should be reviewed on its own merits and the only time it needs to be compared to another game to judge its quality is if they're both of the same genre.

Re: Review: Rogue Legacy - Generations Of Challenge Packaged Up In An Irresistible Roguelike

@JaxonH

Well I'll never agree that AAA games automatically deserve a point or two higher on the scale than an indie game just because they're more technically impressive and have a bigger budget. Love Diablo 3, but I'd rather play a game like Stardew Valley any day of the week. I'm honestly glad indie games get the recognition that they deserve, these small time developers work so hard and put so much love into these games, not because they have to please their shareholders but because they're passionate about making these games, oftentimes while working a day job just to make ends meat.

I guess it's because I'm getting older and have seen the videogame industry get worse and worse over time, but these amazing indies are refreshing and keep me optimistic for the future. Meanwhile look at Activision Blizzard. Diablo 3 was critically acclaimed and loved by fans, so the obvious course of action is to make a bigger, better sequel right? Nope. Activision Blizzard sees it more profitable to get a Chinese mobile game developer to help them lazily put together Diablo Immortal, a more simplified phone game that no one asked for but will inevitably help them rake in the cash with micro transactions. These big companies are out of touch with gamers while indie games are made by gamers.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Life eShop Selects - October 2018

Playing Stardew Valley, going to finish up Dark Souls, and then on to ValkChron 1 after. Can't wait for Battle Princess Madelyn. To that Dikkel guy above me (have him ignored now), indie games/small publisher games are absolutely on the same level as AAA, or even higher because at least they aren't trying to greedily throw microtransactions all up in their games. Stardew Valley is a great example of this, a game I'm nearing 80 hours in and still have tons to do. This game was $15 bucks.

This idea that indies can't be as important as AAA games is baffling to me, most of my favorite games in the past ten years are indie games.

If you want me to actually go to the direct videos and find the exact time stamps where they say that these two are bosses I will. I find it a bit disingenuous that you're trying to lead people to believe we don't have new bosses in this new adventure mode.

Re: Soapbox: That Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct; Let's Talk About It

@Nintendo_Thumb

Fighting games don't typically have dedicated servers. MOST games don't typically have dedicated servers, especially on console. This expectation that Nintendo should have them when most PS4/Xbox games charge you $60 for their peer to peer connection is ridiculous. (Most Xbox One first party games have them, but not the biggest multiplatform titles)

Re: Soapbox: That Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct; Let's Talk About It

Frenean

@BLD

Oh okay, so you complain about Directs but don't pay attention to them. Gotcha. It's literally stated in the Directs that Rathalos is an assist trophy AND a boss, he even has his own boss stage. Same with Dracula. You spend more time being negative than you do actually paying attention to what you complain about.

@FNL

The Sakurai hate is even more unsettling. I never would have thought that we'd see Bayonetta, Ridley, or King K. Rool in Smash. Yet here we are. The dude works his ass off and if, just because a rumor spread all over YouTube and Twitter didn't come true, you're not going to buy a game that is so chock full of fanservice and content that it boggles the mind, you really need to get your priorities straight. Like @Syrek24 said, these entitled children are the worst.

Re: Soapbox: That Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct; Let's Talk About It

Frenean

@BLD

We got an Adventure mode which is the biggest mode that people wanted. If you're disappointed that we didn't get more characters, you definitely did set your expectations too high. Sakurai said from the beginning not to expect too many brand new characters because the intent was to just make this the ultimate Smash, the one with all previous characters and modes. We got way more new characters, maps, and modes than I initially expected.

Edit: I don't know why I even replied to you based off of your comment history. You big smelly willy.

Re: Soapbox: That Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct; Let's Talk About It

@FNL

I won't lie and say that I wouldn't have preferred Banjo, but let's give Sakurai credit. He has already given us a lot of characters that fans wanted (Chrom, Ridley, K. Rool, Bayonetta) and I think it's unfair to think he's doing this to spite fans. This is absolutely a packed roster and there's something for everyone here, Sakurai doesn't have to listen to EVERYTHING the fans tell him. He created the game he wanted, and he definitely went out of his way to give fans what they want already. Your d level sword wielding anime guy quip made me giggle haha
