As this month's release of Sid Meier's Civilization VI on Switch draws closer, the game's official YouTube channel has been uploading videos teaching newcomers how to play the game. One thing Nintendo players won't be learning about is how the online multiplayer component works. That's because in this version of the game there's no such mode.
A Reddit user known as 'WinneonSword' was reportedly the first to point out that the eShop listing for Civilization VI makes no mention of online multiplayer and only references the game's local multiplayer. While it was suspected this mode might drop as a day one patch, publisher 2K has since confirmed to Eurogamer that the Switch version of the game won't support it at all:

Civilization 6 for Nintendo Switch includes support for local cooperative and competitive multiplayer for up to four players via a Wireless Network. It will not have online multiplayer.
What do you think about this? Were you looking forward to playing against your friends online rather than getting together with them in real life for hours on end? Will you still be picking up the Switch version even though it doesn't include this mode? Tell us in the comments below.

2k are not even trying on the switch. Broken games never fixed. Patches late. Stuff missing
Considering how long Civ games take...this isnt a loss really.
That's alright, I have the game on Steam but I mostly play against computers.
More reason why 2K Games sucks and they're not hiding it too.
no online doesn't bother me as i suck at civ games despite playing them since civ III
yeap, this is it, my wallet is save again. It was a first day buy, I even get the credit in the account to buy it. Missing main features like this, paying almost the triple from the other channels. Not even portability can make it.
I will wait for a fair price for this half hearted game. Probably on sales, and like most of the games, in the end I just don't buy it anymore.
I've owned the previous 3 Civ games on PC, and I never played any of them online. This kind of game isn't really built for that anyway. When really good Civ players stream, they're usually playing single-player on insane difficulty and picking up huge scores.
This news has zero impact on my purchasing decision.
«Full game» indeed. Pre-ordered this game based on that statement. Given 2Ks track record, I’m considering cancelling the pre-order to see how the game actually turns out.
I love when companies leave out key features and don’t adjust the price to reflect the changes. On a side note I love all these old ports I really do but again having old games launch at $60 US is crazy to me. I’ll wait for a price drop.
On the one hand, it's always disappointing when a Switch port is missing content found in other versions.
On the other, I didn't even know there was any online multiplayer to begin with so I don't really care. Knowing the kind of game that Civ is, it doesn't sound very fun either.
will wait for a price drop
It's more of a disappointment that they're not including the latest DLC to at least try to justify the price.
Not cool that this feature is also missing.
Fail. Why bother
But it still costs $60...
2K being 2K, as usual.
Not a full game=reason why I wait for a sale.
I was going to get this but I want an Online rts. I’m sure it’s goungbto be fun single player, but I play a lot with my son who lives with his mom, and it’s why we both got dark souls, Diablo, rocket league, fortnite, paladins, doom, splatoon...and there’s more, I just can’t believe the list once you get to writing it. Sorry civilization, waiting for a sale now.
Is it better than age of empires?
Or should i get townsmen. Gee would love pharoh &clepatra on switch
Oh. Guess that means I can confirm I won't be buying it then.
Another 2k game not worth buying then! Hope the Nintendolife review reflects this disapointment!
@Donutman It is not a RTS game. It is turn based FYI.
I don't play online (or local multiplayer for that matter), so it's not a big deal to me. I've never played a Civilization game before, but I was just about to pre-purchase this on the eshop last night until I noticed 2K was the publisher. Then I realized that their games usually go on sale shortly after release, in addition to being buggy messes. So I'm waiting for a review & a sale of 50% or more.
I wasn't going to buy this; now I've got more reason not to. 🙄
Honestly, I've been playing Civilization since Civ 1 and have never played online. Not many people do, as far as I know. It's not that kind of game. Will not miss this mode at all.
I wonder how many of the people moaning about how 2K are "leaving out key features" have actually played Civilization.
@JasmineDragon most haven't they are Trolls farms only. I played games like this and being big as it is makes up for not having to be online to play and enjoy it.
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I could care less. I guess when I look at value, I don't look at it as being relative to what the other consoles received. I'll look at it and think "am I going to get a lot of mileage out of this?" I don't see online in a Civ game being a deal breaker. Heck, you could almost look at it like you're trading a secondary online function for portability.
I'm OK with that. Due to long player turns Civ was never a prime online experience.
While it is disappoint that there is no online it is not really a deal breaker for the game. Would I have liked to have online, most defo. But for civ it is the game that doesn't need online and online only makes things slower compared to soloing it.
Too bad. I was excited but cautious when announced because of 2K's track record. It shouldn't be full price if not the full game. May pick it up on super sale down the road.
That's fine, never played online anyway. As long as there is a physical version im in.
@BladedKnight 50% of players picked up the yearly subscription. There'll be more who subscribe monthly.
While I understand that some folks may be disappointed by the news of a lack of online play, please consider the logistics here. PC gamers have long been accustomed to online games with turn-based gameplay, but consoles are an entirely different story. A typical match of Civ runs well into the HOURS, and sitting quietly...for increasingly longer periods...while your opponents take their turns (and hoping no one drops out of the game in the meantime) simply doesn't fit the M.O. of most of today's console gamers, who've been accustomed to constant barrages of stimuli and hair-trigger reflex-oriented mechanics. This is precisely why 2K has approached the videos for the Switch version the way they have; they know they're dealing with an entirely new audience here.
Personally I play almost exclusively against the computer in either Civ V or VI on Steam anyway; the biggest disappointment for me is that local multiplayer requires additional Switches and copies of the game (not likely for most players, I'll wager). I'll miss my ability to use mods there as well, but I can live with it. The biggest topic of interest for me with the Switch version post-launch will be whether 2K will continue to support it with additional DLC and expansions from the PC version. Here's hoping.
Perfect. I am banned, online makes no difference anymore. LOL.
@JasmineDragon
I mean, even if you and I don't play online, they're definitely missing a key feature. My fiance's brother plays Civ with his friends online on Steam sometimes. 2K is a bad publisher but I'm still getting the game.
How many people actually play Civ online? It's not something I consider a 'key' feature. A typical Civ game takes literally hours, and even days. Online Civ isn't as fun as you think. I play Civ 100% single player, and you guys refusing to buy it cause no MP just seems strange to me. I wonder how many of you actually played a Civ game before.
@Stocksy obviously switch owners dont spend enough on their con micro transactions for them.
Getting tired of your sh*t 2k!
I don't even understand how this is a bad thing. I've play Civ forever and not once have I played online. It would be horrible.
Guess we have to feed the outrage machine though.
@JasmineDragon I’ve played Civ II, III, IV and V online alot. But you have to play against friends (it’s a time consuming game), and none of my Civ friends have a Switch, so it probably isn’t a big deal. However, it’s a feature missing from the supposedly «full game». Makes you wonder what else is missing.
Too bad, but as expected, as it is a port of the ipad-version. And years later, the windows-version still has rather bad online.
I can't even imagine online in Civ (and for that matter, I don't recall it in the console Civs before, although I vaguely remember the option itself in Civ 4). The AI is more than enough challenge for me in terms of turn wait as it is (and in terms of difficulty as well, since I tend to get neck-deep into unlocks and wonders and exploration and... neglect my military with predictable results XD); playing with other people online would either make it an extra chore or have to impose turn time limits - which I'd rather not have to deal with in a game like Civilization either.
How soon I'll buy Civ 6 depends on other factors (including late November sales I might decide to check out first), but it's a certain buy for me, and certainly not less so for lack of a mode I'd be reluctant to use in the first place.
@RasandeRose it is not a port of the ipad version from all the footage i have seen it seems to have more in common with the pc version than the ios port
I love Civ games and have never played an online match with any of them. Still this is a confusing decision given the ability to add cross play if the concern is Switch opponents won't be plentiful.
I still plan on getting this though as no online doesn't matter to me. I will wait to make sure it actually works before I purchase it though because it is 2K and they are not know for quality.....or even fixing broken games
No online play in 2018 is just ridiculous
I do not care about the online aspect of the games so I am happy with Civ.
I will play it just like I play Heroes of Might and Magic - solo, hot-seat or Local.
Then hopefully there won't be any forced updates either. That stuff really rubs me the wrong way.
I never played Mario Kart 8 online, but I was forced to update continuously because I -might- one day want to, even questionable updates like the one that added the Mercedes co-branding and the aggressive DLC advertisement on the character select screen.
So for me personally, this is good news.
The Nintendo switch online is very much a farce. They’ve made us pay for something that adds nothing new to the actual online of the switch. This proves it really, devs still don’t give a brave stimulating shampoo about the online. Nintendo are so far behind it’s not even funny anymore.
@BladedKnight yes, that's until Smash comes out and the membership sky rockets
I personally would never play online in a Civilization game, these games have always been about taking on the cpu in my opinion and I don't really want the stress of having to deal with another player who may quit in the middle of a match.
well glad I didn't pay for no Online service. It is a joke at this point.
Either way if you care or not. Just another example of a full price game on Switch that is not feature complete compared with every other version.
I doubt that many people will be playing this on Switch to have a worthwhile online community anyway
Having less features is definitely a minus, but I'm personally not bothered at all. I have thousands of hours worth of Civ gameplay ever since Civ 2, and not one second of that was spent online.
Like others, i have to wonder how many people saying they won't buy it because of this, wouldn't have bought it anyway.
Civilization just isn't a game that's suited for online play. I mean you can, but its not ideal.
I'll still be picking this up regardless of online play or not.
@BladedKnight This will probably go up soon.
Admit it - you know why.
@BladedKnight I don't think we know the online attachment rate (all I remember seeing was proportion of those who have the subscription choosing 12 months) but Nintendo avoiding mentioning it suggests the attachment rate is bad.
@BladedKnight That's what I was getting at...
Funny seeing the response from people who have never played a civ game in there life.
I tend to play Civ alone or with people in the same room so it's not going to affect my time with the game. It would be nice to have it, of course.
No online really isn't going to hurt my feelings. I hardly play online in general to begin with, and I can be pretty terrible at Civ games (especially considering I haven't played Civ in years...). Not even giving me the option to go online and embarrass myself is just fine and dandy with me.
What do you think about this?
I think 2K games a re a disgrace
Were you looking forward to playing against your friends online rather than getting together with them in real life for hours on end?
What are friends?
Will you still be picking up the Switch version even though it doesn't include this mode?
There are people who are stupid enough to support 2K games or have such poor taste they go for big brands? Not me, I dont support anti consumer companies run by overweight, overpaid and bold old senior men. 2K should be making proper games. Not half assed rushed ports, whilst scoffing pizza every single day.
The Only Civilization game that was good for online in my opinion was Revolution, because you could get a game done in under a couple hours with the right settings. The online for this game would have been a barren wasteland anyways, the only way it would be useful is if you can play with friends and save and restart online sessions.
I absolutely don't care if it doesn't include online multiplayer.
Turn-based 4X games like Civ are a poor fit for online multiplayer anyway, IMO. You always get those players who insist on inspecting every city and its build queues each and every turn and it takes forever to make any real progress in the game. Multiplayer in the same physical location is more enjoyable, as you can talk to each other and let someone know when they're taking too long g and holding everybody up.
Still, I feel like Civilization (and other turn-based 4X) has single-player written its DNA. I'm confident that I would never have used online play, and having a full-featured Civilization to play on the go has long been a dream of mine. Civ Revolution doesn't count.
I'm still picking up this game. I couldn't care less about multiplayer in Civ games. It's a single player experience for me, and I'm thrilled I'll be able to play it anywhere!
It sucks that it is not there but I have hundreds of hours in different sequels on pc and never tried an online match besides a couple. It's a great game but online is like paint drying.
Man, I wish there was splitscreen local multiplayer. Probably an unrealistic idea though
People, this is a single player game through and through. Nobody plays online multiplayer except diehard Civ fans. Nobody wants to spend 5-6 hours online for a strategy game. This is primarily a single player game. Online was tacked on for the lifers.
There's being upset over missing content, and then there's pretending to be upset over an extremely niche mode for diehards you weren't gonna use anyways. Skipping a game over something you would have never used is counterintelligent. And hardcore Civ fans can play their PC version online, and without an online paywall. The people who do care about online, they probably already have the game and the means to do so, and are buying this for portable Civ, not a lesser means of something they can already do.
This is a Switch console exclusive- the only handheld version and the only console version. It's console and handheld Civilization- 95% of people buying this game are buying it for those reasons, and I have to question whether people threatening a lost sale were even going to buy it in the first place. Either they're one of the few diehards who own it on PC, and for some reason wanted to play $20 for a lesser online experience than what they already have, or they're complete noobs who have no idea that Civ online is only appealing for a select few, or they were never gonna buy it to begin with and just want to make it look like sales are being lost over a mode they know nothing about.
will not have online multiplayer better mean will not be 60$ more like 40$ at most cause without that the game will get boring
Makes no difference to me. I didn’t know it had Online and I don’t pay for Online on the Switch. Give me that single player.
Here's something missing to play online you need to have a ISP paid subscription account to begin to have online presence. Online doesn't mean free. That is the cost not being factored when others talk about online gaming.
I didn't even know this game had online multiplayer. Still buying this one.
No online? No, thank you! I’ll continue playing Civilization V on PC.
I'd buy this. If it were based on an alien planet. In the next nearest solar system to our own. And featured an fanatical leader called Miriam, network nodes and alien mind worms.
Give me that I might just drop out of real life for a bit!
@BladedKnight @nessisonett @Grumblevolcano : The online subscription does not have an attach rate of 50%. All Nintendo have stated is that 50% (or so) of users that have subscribed have opted for the annual subscription. They have not actually stated what percentage of users have subscribed.
I personally have no plans whatsoever to subscribe anytime soon. I think it's an absolute farce to be charging for what has been free for the last 13 years on Nintendo platforms (especially with the Switch being as successful as it is).
Played the 2nd and 3rd on PC. Love it although a little repetitive. Never played online anyway, so no online is cool with me.
I'll pick it up regardless. I wasn't really planning on playing multiplayer anyways. I played Civ 5 on pc and I never messed with multiplayer.
Pretty sure online most people would quit soon as they start losing on a game like that
On line multiplayer on Civil VI is far from perfect. Still thats no excuse why this feature shouldn't be available to switch owners. They don't want to waste resources to keep track of the online features. They only know how to ask full price without providing full features or support. Lazy, greedy and disrespectful 2k
Is it just me or have these Civ games really lost their soul over time. I liked 3 but playing the most recent one on PC just felt like a chore simply for the fact that there is no decent tutorial that explains what any of the menus or upgrades do. The screen is overloaded with little boxes and I just end of clicking around not knowing what I’m supposed to do. It goes against the whole design philosophy of “simple to pick up and hard to master” and you spend hours twiddling around before you know what going on.
Bit expensive for a handheld game though most Switch games are. I hope they have made some changes to accommodate the fact that it's on a handheld console like Age of Empires on DS that port was awesome.
Enemy GANDHI used NUKE!
It's super effective!
Not a good start for 2K with this game...
I love Civ VI and was thinking about double dipping for Switch, but online is a big part of it for me, so I'll pass.
I see civ as a solo experience so it won't have an impact on my purchase but I'm curious why the exclusion
It's a bummer but it's no big deal. Civ is usually such a long game that playing online isn't really feasible without really dedicated friends.
That’s why I don’t support 2k also EA
That's pretty lame of 2k to sell an old-ish game for $60 and exclude a significan't feature/mode from play. I imagine it has to do with the painfully low online install base of pretty much any 3rd party Switch game, and the presumed small niche for Civ6 overall on console.
OTOH, Sid Meier games online.....no thanks. On any platform. It just doesn't lend to that. I'll take "suspend anywhere" over online for Civ any day.
Remember when Alpha Centauri had an email based online mode? You would point it to your email account and it would mail turns back and forth over email as attachments. It worked, too! Actually I recall it worked a heck of a lot better than the actual online mode.......Sid games are laggy messes online. Always have been.
Still, it makes me feel a little guilty looking at my preload icon.....
Wait... so local Coop only with multiple consoles?
The much bigger issue then missing online modes imho.
Civ isn't a great game for online, but omitting that option is still bad. It makes the package feel incomplete.
Civ 5 made online bearable due to simultaneous turns (as opposed to HoMM where I had a dull time waiting for one guy to finish his turns, because he fought everything). None of my friends have a Switch, so that's a missed opportunity.
Civ on the go is still tempting though. I've not played 6 yet.
No online no buy.
I'm disappointed but I'm still going to get the game because it looks so good.
@smithpa01
I dont think so. Its ported by the same company that portet Civ to Ipad.
