It's that time of year again where you can now vote for your favourite games. Yes, this year's Game Awards have arrived. Once again, Nintendo releases dominate the family category along with Ubisoft's Starlink: Battle for Atlas and Team 17's Overcooked 2. Square Enix's Switch exclusive Octopath Traveler is also up for three awards including best role-playing game.
Celeste is the sole indie representative in the Game of the Year category, up against five industry heavy-hitters. Epic's Fortnite is in the running for best ongoing game, multiplayer and eSports title, and Capcom's Mega Man 11 is striving to be the best action release.
Apart from Celeste, there's plenty of other indie representation with Dead Cells, Into the Breach and The Messenger nominated across multiple categories. Yoku's Island Express could even be awarded the best debut indie title. On the fighting front, there's Dragon Ball FighterZ and BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle. And in terms of strategy, The Banner Saga 3 and Valkyria Chronicles 4 are up for nomination. Of course, FIFA 19 is hoping to be awarded the best sports game.
According to the official website, more than 100 games and individuals have been nominated this year. If you would like to vote, you'll need to login. You're permitted to vote once every 24 hours. Winners will be announced on 6th December, live at the 2018 Game Awards.

If only smash was here sooner, I'd pick that for GOAT.
Can someone explain how Xenoblade 2 didn't get nominated for either Best RPG or Best Score? I'm confused...
Man i might just pull the trigger on messenger now. Was waiting for a sale but I'm giving in
For Indies, I'm pulling for The Messenger, though I'm sure it'll be Celeste which I got bored with like a few levels in.
Overall, I want God of War to win, but it's probably gonna be RDR2 which is a fantastic game, don't get me wrong. It's just that the clunky controls alone disqualify it for me.
@Kalmaro It'll be eligible next year.
@chocolate_supra Because it's not mainstream enough. Octopath is only there because the Square Enix tag gets it on there.
But also probably because it game out at the tail end of 2017. I think the late in the year release of SSB will keep it out of both this year's and next year's awards too.
@Giygas_95 Not soon enough
@Kalmaro I agree. Like I said I think on Push Square, I feel that this show should happen in early January or tail end of December.
No Hollow Knight?? Rigged!
I feel like it's going to be a battle between Spiderman and Red Dead for GOTY, although I've been seeing a lot of people mention God of War which certainly is up there as well. Red Dead is probably going to come out ahead though because of the "freshness" effect (although it is very good as well), everyone is hyped about Red Dead right now and is focusing on that, although God of War and Spiderman certainly have a chance still as well.
But we all know Super Mario Brothers 2 for the Nintendo Entertainment System is gonna swoop in and get the victory again babyyyy
@chocolate_supra in terms of music, probably for the atrocious timing of Drifting Soul won’t get into details because spoilers for others). 😂 great song, not the best place to play it (at least the first time).
They should really wait till January to do this. Smash being snubbed in multiple categories is a bunch of malarkey.
Nintendo dominated last year, rightfully so. This year is definitely for Sony.
@onex Hollow Knight came out in February 2017. It only came out on the Switch this year.
The complete absence of Xenoblade 2 is irritating, to say the least.
Mad props to Celeste for being nominated for Game of the Year, Matt Makes Games must be so proud of themselves and I'm happy for them.
Man I want Celeste to win GotY. It's one of the most impactful and innovative games I've ever played. It pushes the platformer genre forward like nothing I've seen before, while telling an incredibly important story for the issues of mental health that affect many of us today.
I know it's not likely that Celeste will win, especially against RDR2 and GoW. But I think that Celeste exemplifies the ability of videogames to be true art more than any other nominee, and I believe that that is something the Game Awards should recognize.
@onex Hey, uh, hollow knight came out last year so that's why it isn't here. Celeste is great and really deserving of the win though! Edit: shoot sorry, I didn't see that someone had already answered you.
@Giygas_95 ah, was it PC only back then? I thought Switch had timed exclusivity.
Best Open World Game: Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda Breath of the Wild. I hope it's a Game Award of the Year.
@onex Yeah, then in April, Mac and Linux versions came out. Switch next, then PS4/Xbox One in September of this year.
@Tingle_The_Great @onex @Giygas_95 Hollow Knight was nominated by The Game Awards for best indie debut game in 2017 and lost to Cuphead.

@NOELQUEZON neither of those are from the past year though, especially BotW.
Really happy to see Celeste on there, and generally, these nominations are pretty good. It's an awards show, so all the popularity vs. critical acclaim vs. community fans problems are going to be there, but this is a solid collection of games and I'm glad the recognition exists for the creatives at these hard working studios.
Another Great year for games. Still need to play 2 games in the GOTY list.
Glad to see Valkyria 4 up there.
Also, Overcooked 2 is really, really fun and even though I'm a little surprised it is on there, I have to admit that the play balance is so much improved and most of the rough edges from the original are sanded down, and it is getting to be a bright spot in the library for my wife and I.
Only 2 games IN RED I've owned on this page are Yoku's Island Express and Labo.
If No Man's Sky wins for best ongoing game there's something very wrong. They might as well include FFXV as well, it's been just as ongoing.
I hope the best to Octopath Traveler and the Messenger. Also hopefully Dragon Ball FighterZ win best fighting game of the year.
@onex its a 2017 game
@chocolate_supra Xenoblade 2 seems to be a rather divisive game within the community. I’ve seen people who hate it people who love it in equal measure.
This whas release wise a weak years for the big N.
But hey next year is gonna be awesome
Celeste actually deserves to be mentioned in GOTY talks.
I was pleasantly surprised how good the game was from start to finish.
I know it won't win, but in my opinion, Celeste is by far the best game of 2018. No contest. One of the best games I've ever played.
The only parts of the VGA I care about are the game announcements, as I feel that the video game awards only serves to let these big AAA publishers stroke their own ego. It was great to see Breath of the Wild get game of the year last year (it deserved it), but there's no way a money grubbing soulless game like Black Ops 4 deserves any awards.
Also I agree that Celeste deserves GOTY, and I don't care if it gets it at these awards. It's GOTY in my book.
@brandonbwii I'm very much in the love it camp for Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Xenoblade Chronicles X is the one I hate with a passion myself.
Haven’t played enough Red Dead 2 to accurately rate it. So until I’ve devoted some time to it, I want God of War to win everything it can. I had a lot of fun with Fortnite this summer and so I wouldn’t mind if it won some awards and Celeste was a greater indie than The Messenger. Messenger had funnier writing, but both had great music.
I think it's pathetic how playing games is considered 'creating content'. So naff.
God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Spider-Man are going to duke it out against one another. I haven't played the later (I intend to) but choosing between the first two is difficult for me. Both games are simply incredible in so many ways.
I can't take the VGA's seriously for the same reason I can't take oscars or emmys seriously. It's usually decided by who campaigns the hardest towards the end, so that some AAA company can put that GOTY label on their game's cover.
The only reason to keep a tab or screen up is for the game reveals/trailers for next years games. I'll probably be playing my Switch in handheld while this is on my tv waiting for just this reason. Bonus points if something rediculous and funny happens because some of these marketing reps forget how to human.
Shows how slow this year has been for Nintendo as a developer/ publisher when the only exclusive game to be nominated is Octopath Treveller, and then a handful of games in the Family category which does nothing but cement peoples preconception of Nintendo being just for kids and families.
It's been a great year for nindies but other than that what have we had that's nomination worthy other than XC2?
Hopefully Forza Horizon 4 doesn't lose to Mario Tennis Aces in the Sports/Racing category. Though I don't have Forza yet, I could tell from the demo alone that it's a lot better than Mario Tennis Aces.
Yeh, I think last year was a little better for Nintendo. Hopefully next year we get top tier games, like Bayonetta 3, Pokemon Water/Earth(Just invented the name, not real at all), and perhaps Metroid as well..
A lot of Celeste love, if it doesn’t go on sale by Christmas I think I’ll finally get it anyway
Go Yoku! Love that game, and can't wait for the sequel (as it was kind of hinted when you 100% it)
Celeste is definitely one of the best games released all year. I'd place it above GoW and Assassin's Creed at the very least.
All this list serves to do is remind me how many great games are out there I haven’t played at all, or enough.
Curse you adult life!
@Kalmaro smash & lets go would make it any any category due to sheer numbers
Celeste running for GOTY alongside RDR2 and Sony's hits. Speaks volumes... of nothing that the defendants of "AAA master race" would like to hear.
@chocolate_supra THANK YOU
For ongoing game I am gonna be leaning towards no mans sky considering how Hello Games has persisted upon improving the game and fixing it's flaws even in the face of all the negative reviews and press
Ooh~
Return o the Obra Dinn is nominated.
Really hope for Mr. Pope to bring that one out on Switch some day.
I could tell right away RDR2 was already decided for pretty much everything. My problem with awards like this is that the most recently released hyped thing almost always wins. In 2015, GameFAQs's "Best game of all time" poll went to Undertale, which was only out for maybe a month at that point. (As much as I like Undertale, no way is it the best game ever made, in my opinion).
The other major problem I have is that we're deciding the "Game of the Year" with over a month left in said year. I know December isn't normally a time when "major" releases usually happen, but last I checked, those games are exempt from the next year's nominations, so even if a really awesome game is released in December, they'll never even acknowledged.
I know I'm far from an authority on what the kids like these days, but if I ran this sort of shindig, I would at least wait until the end of the year so that an entire actual year's worth of releases can be considered, and possibly even wait until the hype dies down so we don't just hand every award to a game that was released two weeks ago.
Damn...looks like no hope for Nintendo to win best family game...
@nintendobynature The Messenger is one of my favourite games of 2018. I would definitely recommend it!
@Liam_Doolan I know you love it! I've seen you post/write many great things about it. Picked it up 2 nights ago and I can't put it down. It really is phenomenal
@nintendobynature Glad to hear. It's great to see it on this awards list as I can't help but feel it has been overlooked. It's one of the most enjoyable indies I've played since Shovel Knight.
@Liam_Doolan I'll agree with you there, it's definitely up there with shovel knight. August and September were big months for releases, both 3rd party and indie so I think thats why it got overlooked. Maybe if they so a sale more people will bite.
Yeah, hopefully, the upcoming update/patch will get the attention of anyone who missed it the first time around.
