More games will get announced as the year goes on if nothing tickles the Nintendo owner’s pickle. Personally, I don’t really know what some of you are expecting to ‘make’ your 2023 on Switch; that’s a solid lineup of games already. Meh, different strokes for different folks.
Never had issues with my launch unit, it still works absolutely fine and was used by my 4 year old for a good year before he got his own yesterday. Only has a hairline crack in the back casing which hasn't effected anything other than being able to force the Joycon out without un-clicking it. Solid machine and I'd only upgrade it for an OLED or successor at this point.
How much is the Steamdeck costing plus the USB GBA cart thing versus a GBA SP 101 these days? I'm not picking a fight or anything, just seems like an expensive and perhaps convoluted way of playing something that was already handheld....
Some interesting take aways in the last few weeks. Seems the Switch really doesn't need replacing at the moment, with such strong sale figures around the globe, I think Nintendo could easily slot in a more powerful revision at their own pace, one thing is clear though, they do probably need to stick to what the market is doing and make the Switch's successor an 'upgraded' device rather than a whole new concept as this model really is working for them and is similar to the PS5 and Series X where the older games are instantly playable on the newer machine with 'last gen versions' being available for those that have the older unit.
Moving on to the PS5 and XBSX/S, it's very interesting to see the Series S starting to make a move on the PS5 Digital console, I think if MS can continue to be competitive with deals and pricing, it stands a good chance at overtaking its rival in Japan which would be the first time they've ever done that. I think the price of the PS5 going up isn't going to help with gaining a larger foothold in Japan, we're a couple of years in at this point and whether the shortage of components is really hampering sales, the longer we go down the road, the less people are going to shell out such a premium price for (by that point) older specs, of course, a slim PS5 is probably under a year away so I'm sure that'll be a shot in the arm, but I can't see the PS5 getting to the heights that the PS4 and PS2 did so effortlessly, not taking anything away from it, that's just my thoughts.
At this point, I kind of think that putting the Dreamcast back into limited production maybe the way to go, if they could find a plant to reproduce the GD Rom drive so you could still play your old game and release compilation discs for newcomers, coupled with the new releases that come out each year , could be a go-er …. Well, as far as comparing costs to a retro mini console that would likely be the same ERP as the DC back in 1999 anyway! On a serious note, I should imagine the Dreamcast controller and perhaps VMU is what is causing a headache, in theory it’ll be bigger than the actual console unit and no doubt will have to lose the whole screen in the controller concept.
I believe so much was the rift that Capcom became a huge Sega supporter during the Saturn & Dreamcast era. They certainly bestowed both those machines with great games. Perhaps it was the design on the machines being close to Capcom’s arcade output but I’d say there was more to it than that, they really seemed to believe in Sega which would make sense if things weren’t so great with Nintendo around that time.
I read somewhere (I think IGN) where they pretty much assumed Kao was the Dreamcast's mascot... Imagine living in a world where the Sonic Adventure games are not the first thing you think of when it comes to mascot games. Damn. Anyway, I own a complete set of DC games with Kao present by default, it wasn't really the most common game to find so I can only assume it didn't sell that well there.
I played the Saturn version a couple of years ago after not playing it for many years, I got quite far and found my eyes and brain quickly adjusted to the dated visuals and clunkiness of the game, I mean, infinite health packs helped me tremendously too...
On another note, I would be very surprised if the Switch doesn't breeze past the Wii in sales soon, if it hasn't done so already, taking into account Christmas buyers.
One thing the Wii U always had as a secret weapon was having one player on the GamePad and one on the TV in co-op. I loved that feature and ironically was pretty much the one and done example of how to use that machine's feature.
@Vortexeo Yup I was the same, everyone rates it but I just found really long and quite boring. I would have preferred a continuation of the GBA art style over the Sonic CD type too.
@HaikuHiker I think the Wii U is perhaps going to show its true colours soon, I've already seen discs with data holes on them and machines not reading games. that top layer is super fragile.
@Ryu_Niiyama I remember them releasing Brain Training which I presume was emulated from the DS version, and it being hot garbage it was either the touch screen not keeping up with the on screen prompts or the microphone bits that really killed it from memory, I can only assume Nintendo (wisely) put that one to bed thereafter.
@Shadowthrone I'm glad you listed them, I've got this point of not watching videos that feature whoever is presenting in the thumbnail, seems overly narcissistic.
In my view, the Wii was one of those consoles that even with the redesigns of the PS3 and 360 mid-gen, the Wii just seemed to continue to look classy and actually a premium product.... Well, compared to the Wii Mini anyway.
I think the Pearl White Gamecube deserves a shoutout, that thing is beautiful.
@Heavyarms55 Totally agree, the Wii U was a terrible era for Nintendo and only served a purpose to incubate some decent games to be ported to the Switch, out of all Nintendo's previous machines, I really think the Wii U is one that you'd never need to return to as everything good was plundered and the rest can be played on another system anyway. What a waste, and that's coming from someone who still has 60-70% of all the PAL Wii U games, the 3DS really had to work hard not to sink the ship for that half a decade or so.
Those 12 months from Summer 2014 -15 seemed like Nintendo had lost focus in a big way, the 3DS was doing okay-ish , but the Wii U, man... Nobody is likely to forget the couple of Nintendo Directs that were infested with Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze extra character nonsense. I think I was half out the door at the point, just buying what were becoming late generation low print run Wii U games but not actually playing the thing. Good riddance to those days and that huge flop of a console.
I'm really surprised nobody remembers the fact that THQ were toying with the idea of No Mercy being released on the Wii with an updated roster, it had a small section in one of the Nintendo magazines around 2007/8 time...
I honestly don't understand why Nintendo are cutting off the Wii and Wii U (particularly) prematurely, there are companies that I'm sure would eventually release the back catalogue of eShop titles on physical media, with disc manufacturing now coming to a close, it seems a real shame not to keep those gates open for anyone wanting to make an unusual product.
£32.40... Why is this one more than other games SRG do? I gave up on buying each one when Knights of Pen and Paper came about being two games that carry the numbered system with no option to buy on their own. SRG I feel are clawing back that need for greed but it's creeping in their a little... Where is Untitled Goose? Instead World of Goo gets a physical and as good as it is, Little Inferno? Questionable choices in my view.
I used to love SRG in the early days, some of the stuff they came out with was brilliant. I can't help but feel now that a lot of these games aren't really worth parting £30 for... I love Little Inferno, don't get me wrong but I remember it being a cheap Wii U game when I played it.
Honestly some of these games like this, World of Goo, Toki Tori and such like just aren't worth the cash. Plus my dislike for Woodrowbeatemup Youtuber ponce who they do reveals with, put me off them in general.
@Protocol_Penguin they were in trouble when I worked for them in 2012. Also in 2008 they had to buy Gamestation to survive. Please, please, do not confuse 'Brexit' as a blanket to throw over mis-managed companies, I know it's easy to chuck around and apply to everything.
Both Gamecube and Wii PAL covers were brilliant, i liked the Wii one for its almost seamless blend from the Wii logo to actual cover, and in some respects the GC cover was the same type of thing, it just worked without any real clashes.
@Damo aren't you guys meant to be an embassador of a brand though ? In this case Nintendo? Surely reporting on underground stories like this only serves to harm that brand in the grand scheme of things. I must admit, like quite a few others here, I'm getting tired of the persistence to keep posting about hacking the console, will you carry on when we invariably get to the point where this testing the water type phase becomes an R4-like product for the Switch?
Why keep writing about it when clearly it's not Nintendo Life's finest hour, and going by the comments the last time, people that don't want to read about this, out weigh those that do. I get that for many it's interesting about what can be done here but what starts as an idea to better gaming lives fast becomes a slippery slope - either way it's exploiting and this sort of thing shouldn't be on a main stream website like this man.
If anyone else is feeling that this is a tad wrong to be posted on this kind of site, just Tweet Nintendo with a link, that's what I did since I expect better from NL.
It's only now I think about how much my early gaming days were influenced by Toys R Us, my Gamecube came from there which was the Zelda silver pak with 5 extra EA games - Tiger Woods 03 being a surprise hit in my group of friends, the bundle I remember being the cheapest in town at like £179.99 or something, also my second N64 came from them when they were selling them off for £49.99 with 4 (now rare) games, the console was blue and clear too.
I think their biggest part to play in my early teen years was seeing the Dreamcast demo console in the Plymouth branch, it was running Sonic Adventure and it was unlike anything I'd ever seen before - I knew I had to have one, and all those years later, I've got the full set of games for it! Cheers Toys 'R' Us - you were actually alright.

Yes I was under the assumption you had to play your cart rather than rip them.
Great comment, aside from ‘not rocket science really’ which made you come off somewhat condescending. Apologies if that wasn’t the case.
