Update - Tue 7th Jun, 2022 13:00 BST: Rendering Ranger: R2 has been announced for western release by Limited Run Games, officially ending its absurd scarcity since its initial Japan SNES launch in 1995. No release date has been set at the time of writing, however a physical edition of the game has been confirmed with pre-orders going live in the coming months.
Significantly, the game will also be getting a SNES physical release in addition to the Nintendo Switch, so if you missed out on Rendering Ranger: R2 the first time round (of course you did), then now might be the time to finally bag yourself a copy.
Original Article - The 13th Jan, 2022 16:45 GMT:
Ziggurat Interactive has just announced that it has inked a deal that gives it the rights to "more than 80 titles" originally owned by famed '80s and '90s developer and publisher Rainbow Arts.
Founded in Germany in 1984 by Marc Ullrich and Thomas Meiertoberens, Rainbow Arts produced several games for the Commodore 64 and Commodore Amiga, with Logical, Lollypop, X-Out and Mad TV being some of the most notable. Rainbow Arts also published the Turrican series, but those games are not believed to be part of this agreement.
Out of Rainbow Arts' catalogue, it's Rendering Ranger: R2, an insanely rare 1995 Super Famicom title, which is perhaps most well-known amongst Nintendo fans. Designed by the legendary Manfred Trenz (Great Giana Sisters, Katakis, Turrican), Rendering Ranger: R2 makes heavy use of CGI visuals and is best described as a mix of Contra and Turrican.
Only 10,000 copies were ever made, and the game was exclusive to Japan at the time of release. Rendering Ranger: R2 – also known as Targa – is one of the titles included in the Ziggurat deal, and the company has promised an update on its plans for the game "later this spring".
Michael Devine, SVP of Business Development at Ziggurat Interactive, had this to say about the deal:
We are incredibly pleased to add a number of significant games from Rainbow Arts to Ziggurat’s growing catalogue of historic games. Rainbow Arts was a premiere and iconic European video game publisher of the ‘80s and ‘90s. Each game released during that time frame – mainly made for the C64, Amiga, and PC – evokes memories of 16-bit wonders, colorful graphics, and playful challenges the moment you see the rainbow logo appear. We can’t wait to revitalise these games and share them with today's classic gaming fans.
We reviewed Rendering Ranger: R2 in 2016, giving it an impressive 9/10. We said:
Rendering Ranger: R2 is a labour of love from a small and dedicated team that spent nearly three years making the Super Famicom do things people assumed impossible. It's a lovely hybrid of a regular run and gun game and superb shmup. It looks absolutely incredible with detailed backgrounds and bosses up to three screens tall, the controls respond flawlessly and as previously stated, there is no perceivable slowdown anywhere to be found. A technical masterpiece that is much more than just eye candy and a great way to prove that the Super Famicom could indeed handle shmups as easily as the Mega Drive or PC Engine in the hands of the right developers.
Will you be getting Rendering Ranger: R2 when it finally launches in the west? Are you opting for a Switch copy or SNES? Or both?! Let us know!

Great news! Hopefully something which looks this good will be made readily available to all interested.
Nice. Though I doubt any of these games will be added to the NSO SNES collection. This sounds more like an Evercade type of deal. Either way, it's better these games are given a re-release than sitting in whatever vault they have been in since the turn of the millennium.
Ah I've got Rendering Ranger downloaded to my mini snes. It's tough, don't think I've actually beaten it.
Ziggurat Interactive should work with Limited Run Games to make a physical SNES version of Rendering Ranger.
Rainbow Arts? Is that an alternate name for LJN?
@HammerGalladeBro Ha! Good joke. 😄
A great win for games preservation!
Well, good news. Rendering Ranger looks a bit naff, mind.
@Hordak That's honesty what I was expecting to read, either Limited Run or Retrobit publishing carts would make sense.
Zigurrat also has the rights to BloodRayne which was recently published by Limited Run Games, so there might be a connection?
Give us the original c64 version of Giana sisters yes it’s a shameless copy of super Mario bros but the music on the c64 version is outstanding I would definitely buy that
Please be a digital release and not in some f**** dumb*** plug and play system or a handheld or NFTs or whatnot JUST PLEASE DIGITALLY RERELEASE IT
@HammerGalladeBro As a devout Turrican fan, I don't find that very funny
OG The Great Gianna Sisters, Katakis and Rendering Rangers = Do want I do.
@Gs69 God dang I love that SID chip.
@The-Nate Turrican is the alternate title for the Alien and X-Force crossover.
Turrican Collection 1 is already out on Switch at a greedy price as they did nothing with the games.
Due to the insane price tag, Turrican Collection 2 is probably cancelled as it were suppose to be released 1 year ago.
Epic bought Factor 5 which owns Turrican.
Yeah this has the Evercade written all over it.
@Ventilator true. The most Epic can do is to throw Turrican in the Fortnite dumpster
I hope we do get a release of Rendering Ranger, it's actually pretty fun and shows off a lot of clever SNES graphical tricks.
Wow, rainbow arts, now that brings back memories! Someone mentioned firebird and buying cassettes in the newsagents last week (like I did back in my paper round days). I was almost welling up
@Ventilator
Eh? There's the retail Turrican Flashback, which contains 1, 2, Mega and Super, hardly bad value at 20 quid?
Then there are the two Anthologies that have been held up for bug fixes, score attack modes, in-game maps etc. Probably not as good value unless you're a big fan, but still decent enough
There's nothing been cancelled.
I have Rendering rangers on repro cart, fantastic game on all counts !!
Surely if it gets ported to the Switch, it shouldn't be called Rendering Ranger: R2, it should be called Rendering Ranger: ZR? No? Sorry, I'll get my coat...
I've played it a few times before, it's a lot of fun, so yeah I'll buy it if they decide to release it for switch. As long as they just port it, then don't try to remake it or remaster it. Perhaps add a few new difficulty levels or something to make it easier for people younger than us who weren't alive during the 16 bit era and so aren't used to hard games like this. And add save states to it also, of course. Cos if they don't add those things, then people are just gonna much rather play it on an emulator anyway. It sucks when games like this get ported and are somehow much much worse than the free option.
But yeah I hope it'll help games like Turrican come back to popularity. Cos maybe then we'll get a new one. Manfred Trenz is apparently still alive. And still making games, supposedly. So that'd be cool if he made a new entry in the Turrican series, even if it couldn't actually be called Turrican (because he no longer owns the rights to the IP). There's a handful of retro-styled Turrican clones for the switch already, along with the turrican collection. But one made by the man(fred) himself would be great.
Like there's a game called Gunlord X for switch that is absolutely pure Turrican. It doesn't try to hide it, it's a loving homage (some would even say a ripoff) of the series. It's loads of fun.
And yeah Rendering Ranger R2 isn't technically a Turrican game, but come on, it absolutely is a turrican game. It's Turrican in everything but name.
These kinds of run and gun games are weirdly unique. Like they play very differently to something like Contra for example. Maybe they should be called Turricanlike games, like Roguelike games are games that are similar to the game "Rogue". Once you see a Turricanlike, you instantly know it, it's so clear that that's what it is. More Turricanlike games, please, indie developers. If I knew anything about game development then I'd try to make one myself
Rendering Ranger is a fantastic game, people need to experience it
@SpringDivorce Turrican digitally costs 30 Euro on Switch and 33 Euro on PS4.
There is so little new content that it only use 45.MB combined.
They could have added the Turrican CD OST as PCM, Turrican N64 concept stuff etc. to make it more attractive.
They showed Turrican 64 artwork sometime in 1990's.
This release here were released at the same time as Turrican last year.
Capcom Stadium.. 32 Arcade games for only 10 Euro more.
As for old Amiga games. Zool Remastered were released on PC in 2021. Still PC only.
They kept original gameplay, but zoomed camera out and remade gfx for Widescreen. If you have PC you should check it out on Steam.
Funded by SUMO Digital (Sackboy, Sonic Racing Transformed etc.)
This is good news, would love to see these hidden gems for the Switch, PC, and EverCade.
finally, something worth playing
@NatiaAdamo It's more about the exposure to me, I had no idea this game existed. Seems like a good hidden gem to try out on the MiSTer. The game itself won't hold very much value for most people I am guessing, that is a $5 game at best. I probably already have it in one of my rom archives.
@Funneefox don’t forget not be a freaking limited run bs release.
@Dirty0814 I swear to GOD if rendering Ranger r2 is only available via some strictly limited games release I’m gonna turn into the Joker.
I’ve been waiting on my turrican anthologies for 2 WHOLE YEARS now
@Funneefox right there with ya man, I got like 6 orders of about 15 games from Limited I’m still waiting on for over a year. I’ve done decided if I can get it from play Asia and it’s the Asian or I’m versions I’ll do that instead. Tired of this waiting crap it’s ridiculous.
@Ventilator No, Factor 5 is still its own thing (not exactly a proper company, just a name owned by three of the original employees that happen to also work at Epic now)
Also, check out this update from last month or so: https://mailchi.mp/strictlylimitedgames/turrican-533811?e=508fb27961
@The-Nate Cool, so #2 is coming soon.
Looks like they did some extra effort by adding the old CD Tracks with Turrican studio remakes etc. too.
Anyways. When they work for Epic, i guess they don't have time to make anything new anymore.
They were specialists at pushing Nintendo consoles several times. They even designed the sound chip in GameCube.
@Ventilator The CD thing was known when the listings were first put up in August 2020
@The-Nate Yeah. I already had the CD since it were released over 25 years ago.
@Ventilator Oh, I thought you were talking about the Anthology CDs from 2013
Altho I can wager a guess that the 1993 CD tracks will be bonus tracks
@The-Nate Yeah. They could be.
Would be even better if it were an option to replace in game music.
@Ventilator At least the anthology remixes (well, more specifically, new mixes based on the anthology album remixes) can be played in-game
@The-Nate That's cool.
R2 and Targa are technically different games - Targa had hand drawn sprites and were changed to pre rendered type sprites. I think theres a ROM of Targa you can get..
So before long with all these limites run games news, do we have to assume before long, they will be the only ones assuming physical copy duty of games? For a game like the one of this article, it's understandable but for games like DOOM Eternal, ... sad times
@The_BAAD_Man It's coming to switch, so yeh.
This is great news, but why the awful N/A carts only?
It's a good game but not a 9/10. The shmup levels are way too messy.
@YANDMAN probably because the game was NTSC only and their primary market is probably for them no point releasing a PAL version due to possible incompatibilities.
While this may make physical games less rare I don't think it will help with the scarcity of physical copies even after this as if these ones go up for sale later they will certainly be close to an original copy. It is essentially just the third Turrican game on the SNES and while it looks pretty the levels for me are a bit bland in terms of design.
Nice, there's nothing wrong with more Turrican like game on Switch.
@Hordak called it.
I love this. Even though I am highly unlikely to ever play it, ending its scarcity and giving more players from both the older and newer generation the opportunity to play it is critical, since games are made to be enjoyed by everyone.
Amazing game!! This shows what the Snes can do. Even though the haters will always hate. R2, Macross, Spriggan powered, check em out.
@Zenszulu
Such releases are helping at least People like me, that want a physical Copy, but don't want to spend insane Prices for it or a cheap chinese Knockoff.
But i am passing, can't justify the Price plus Shipping for a Game i am semi interested :>
Judging by the current copies on ebay, I believe it's already been reprinted. I can't remember if it has had a legitimate reprint (by a Japanese company such as Columbus Circle) or not.
But I can tell some of the copies are not the same print.
Really like when rare games get rereleased, Little Samson next?
So will there be a digital release or do I have to play the the Limited Cart prepay and wait game?
@Zenszulu So why not include a SFC version, seeing as it's prohibitively expensive?
