The usual trained seals are explaining why the direct wasn't that bad (when you're explaining, you're losing) and the biggest headline was an internet rumour about two more rehashed Zelda games coming to Switch this year (probably for 80$ each, not collectively). Let's not kid ourselves. The only upside is that maybe they're keeping their powder dry until they reveal something amazing at E3 (the next Zelda game or something of a similar scale) for release later this year. Still on track for the Switch to have the weakest first-party library of any recent Nintendo generation.
Possible they're holding their cards until E3. One E ticket game for 2022 (Splatoon 3), but nothing for Christmas 2021. Something has to fill that gap. E3 is about winning, and a surefire way to do that would be to shock the world by revealing the most anticipated title far sooner than anyone expects it. Are they smart (or stupid) enough to do something like that?
@Sabruka What? This is the biggest news day in a long time. We have a direct coming tomorrow. So much news that they haven't even gotten to the Mario Kart story.
@Dringo Not all first-party games are the same scope as Mario Odyssey. That one took four years if we assume for the sake of the argument that they didn't finish long before October 2017 and then delay the game until the next console came out instead of releasing on Wii U (as they did with Breath of the Wild). Smash Ultimate, by contrast, took three years (putting it right on par with other Smash games). And Mario Kart 9 is nowhere in sight.
@Dringo Nonsense. The figures include ports that would be very easy to make, along with less-graphically demanding games that could've easily released on 3DS (ie Link's Awakening). You cannot say with a straight face that Super Mario 3D World on Switch was harder to make than Super Mario 3D World on Wii U.
The analysis doesn't include ports vs. new releases, but it's pretty hard to imagine the Switch argument would fare better if that were accounted for. "Better" is highly subjective and it's not at all obvious the Switch wins that contest (Breath of the Wild is exactly the same on both consoles).
You got me on Youtube. The rest of the post still stands.
Not sure where you're going with the Gamecube. Any Gamecube owner that bought a Wii absolutely got their money's worth. Namedropping the worst game on the system doesn't change that.
It is not unreasonable to be upset that Nintendo is releasing fewer games this console cycle than they ever had (this is a fact supported by objective data, it’s not an opinion) and the few games they do release are $80 rehashes that contain just enough content that you’re missing out if you don’t buy them, but not worth paying full price for (~ 5 hours worth). The Wii U also had better amenities (YouTube, netflix, etc), a better virtual console and free online. Nintendo seems to be going in the wrong direction as far as consumers and user experience are concerned.
Buried lede: they haven’t cast him yet, therefore the movie isn’t very far along in development, therefore it might not come out at all. Probably the best news we’ve had all week.
Surely this will put all the pro-begging to rest for a while at least? Well, probably not, but they clearly have no real incentive to release a new system or a hardware revision.
@nhSnork Not sure about the four characters. But more vertically-oriented levels and being able to pick up and throw characters was part of the original plan.
@nhSnork Actually, Doki Doki Panic was originally meant to be a sequel to Super Mario Bros. before they got the promotion. They turned it back into a Mario game when it was released internationally. During that period, it was quite common for the second game to be radically different from the first (see: Zelda 2, Castlevania 2).
@Tempestryke 3. It was originally meant to be a Mario game, but they changed it after they got the Doki Doki Panic promotion. It wasn’t uncommon during that period for sequels to be very different from the first game (see: Zelda 2, Castlevania 2).
"although ageing visuals and the irritation of being kicked back to the world map after every death stand out as things that could have been finessed in this Deluxe version."
Pretty silly complaint. That happens in every game on the list that has a world map, including the two at the top. The solution is to become better at the game so you don't get sent back to the world map in the first place. Next you'll be complaining about having to replay half the level every time you die.
Nah. Breath of the Wild 2 and Prime 4 (lol) are confirmed for the basic Switch, so you'll need a different launch title. I recommend Star Fox Grand Prix.
@OorWullie Nope. GBA games will be exclusive to the online service for the New Super Switch Pro model. The current system doesn’t have the CPU or horsepower or something.
@BongoBongo123 Wouldn’t a reboot start with trimming down the Pokédex, removing backwards compatibility, and focusing on winning new/lapsed fans over diehards? Careful what you wish for, though you may well end up with the bestselling Pokémon game since the first Dexit (2003).
@Bahimiron Super Mario Bros. 2 was originally planned to be a sequel to Super Mario Bros before they got the Doki Doki Panic promotion. After that, it was turned back into a Mario game when it was brought to North America. It plays quite differently from the first game, but that was par for the course for sequels in that period (see: Zelda 1 and Zelda 2). Unlike Yoshi’s Island, it’s always included in Nintendo’s official history of the series while the latter usually isn’t (as it doesn’t star Mario as the main character).
Lost Levels. Puts your skills to the test, and the only people that don’t like it simply aren’t good enough to handle a real challenge. Then 3, Maker, and World.
The Beetle from Skyward Sword would be incredibly useful, particularly for exploring shrines. It was hyped up as the future of Zelda dungeons back in 2011, yet we haven't seen it since (except in Smash). Would be a good new Sheikah Slate module.
It looks exactly the same as it usually does. The graphics evidently aren't going to get any better, and Nintendo should stick with the Switch forever instead of making a new console.
You have to understand, there's very little Real News to report these days (no directs in sight, only one upcoming first party release) so Nintendo Life has to get creative. Besides, Brie Larson is guaranteed hateclicks.
Eh. Only Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong are essential, the rest are mostly filler. Cranky Kong is good for nostalgia, and Funky/Candy Kong serve their purpose.
@FlaviusFire If there aren’t enough Wii U players to actually matter, they should just release the game without any new content. Cheaper on their end and they can get it out faster. Adding just enough new content so that there’s an incentive to double dip but not nearly $80 worth (the asking price) is predatory and anti-consumer. Ideally they would release Bowser’s Fury as reasonably priced DLC for the Wii U or as a Switch eshop standalone title. It would take a few lines of code at most to do the latter, but forcibly bundling it as they’ve done is consistent with their recent behaviour (getting rid of directs and making fewer games than at any point in their history).
@HotGoomba___Rebrand That's because they stopped producing the Wii U in early 2017. Normally, they continue selling the old console (and even making new games for it, occasionally) for a few years afterward (most recently with the 3DS).

I feel bad for Mr. Aonuma that they trotted him out just for that.

Link can put up his heart containers to get a mortgage in Breath of the Wild. Borderline usury (10% interest), but it beats being homeless.
