Re: Nintendo's Upcoming Release Schedule For 2021 Looks Positive, With Room For More

Euler

@NGNYS Nintendo released more games per year during the Wii U-3DS era than the Switch era, even before the pandemic. And that includes the many rehashed games, which are rampant on the Switch. I think people that constantly suck up to Nintendo are more likely to be paid trolls than people that want their money’s worth when they buy a new console.

Re: Soapbox: Is It Time For Game Rental Stores To Return?

Euler

I think there's a niche market, and certainly demand. The cities I've lived in have all had local businesses that offer game rental (as well as games for sale), and any opportunity to support small business rather than the corrupt big tech oligarchs should be taken up. Going to the video store to browse and pick out a game or movie on a Friday or Saturday night is an essential part of the experience, and scrolling through a menu on the screen just doesn't compare. Besides the lack of selection offered by NSO and services like it.

Re: Talking Point: Why Did Nintendo Give Up On Its 'Classic Edition' Concept So Soon?

Euler

Problems with N64 Classic Edition:

1. The controller would be too expensive, and the system would have to come with more than one (as the N64 has many great multiplayer games). They would also need to make the control stick more sturdy without compromising the authenticity.

2. The N64 was never nearly as popular as the NES or Super NES (it lost very badly to the PS1), and conventional wisdom says that the library didn’t age as well (though still better than the PS1’s, obviously).

3. Getting the Rare licences would be complicated, and the system wouldn’t be complete without them.

None of these are insurmountable, but taken together they make the N64 mini pretty unlikely.

Re: Talking Point: Is "Cheesing" A Legitimate Strategy?

Euler

Generally it's acceptable. If you can beat the final boss by standing at the side of the screen and spamming the stab button, get infinite 1-ups with the Koopa shell trick, or fly over the level with the cape feather that's more an issue of flawed design on the developers' part (though Nintendo has deliberately implemented the Koopa shell trick into most subsequent 2D Mario games). It isn't the players' fault that they discovered a new way to win.

Re: Feature: Best NES Games

Euler

I must disagree. If anything, 50 is too low of a bar. Otherwise you can get wildly skewed results (like 3D World + Bowser’s Fury being the top Mario game because it has only 75 user reviews rather than thousands like the other games in the franchise).

Re: Feature: Best NES Games

Euler

Quite interesting. It really says a lot about how the library has aged when a 5/10 game can still make the top 50.

Also, everyone should purchase a permanent version of Punch Out on some platform (ie not NSO) before the outrage Karens at ResetEra get it cancelled. You know it's coming.

Re: Feature: Zelda: Four Swords Was Probably Great, But Finding Pals To Play With? Talk About A Master Quest

Euler

The GBA Four Swords is great, but pretty boring without friends. The new A Link to the Past dungeon is fun, but locked behind beating Four Swords and A Link to the Past (not sure if there’s a hack that lets you get in without Four Swords).

Four Swords Adventures is still fun with only one player, though obviously better with at least 2 (never done it with four). It would be a great candidate to be put on Wii U (probably the only console where it would work) with online multiplayer.

Re: Feature: Zelda: The Wind Waker Proved We Don't Always Know What We Want

Euler

@nimnio It's not an opinion, it's simple facts and data. Every first home console Zelda sold better than Wind Waker, the experts (including Aonuma and Miyamoto themselves - the people with the most on the line) agree that it didn't do what it needed to, and the Gamecube era very nearly led to the end of the series. That was why they decided to completely change gears for the next game rather than make Wind Waker 2.

Re: Talking Point: Is Zelda An RPG, Or Not?

Euler

Sort of a "Paradox of the Heap" scenario. I think Zelda 2 is obviously an RPG (or an RPG-Metroidvania hybrid, more precisely). Otherwise it's a question of how many standard RPG features can be removed before a game becomes not an RPG anymore (or how many need to be added before a non-RPG becomes an RPG). I think Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga is an RPG (even though it's more about being good than about being smart or level-grinding). What about Secret of Mana, which seems more Zelda-like than most RPGs but more RPG-like than most Zelda games? Is Zelda also a 3D platformer, since it can involve jumping and Ocarina of Time was originally meant as a sequel to Mario 64? Is it a collectathon, as all Zeldas contain many collectibles (heart pieces, Korok seeds, spirit orbs, gold Skulltullas, Poes, gold bugs, sword moves, photographs and figurines, and more)?

Re: Nintendo Reportedly Gearing Up For Record Switch Sales This Year

Euler

@patbacknitro18 That's not a good sign, but they said before the direct that they'd be focussing on the first half of the year and we don't yet have a holiday title named. And a game we actually know about is always a better bet than one we don't. With E3 coming up, it's still too early to count it out.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Switch Pro "Will Have Exclusives", Says Insider

Euler

@foobarbaz The Switch has been around for 4 years, not 5, they claimed that it would last longer than previous Nintendo consoles (last year they said it was about halfway through its life cycle), and it has the weakest first-party lineup of any Nintendo generation in recent history. Yes, they should make sure people who bought the console get their money’s worth by releasing more Switch games rather than a completely unnecessary upgrade (video game graphics are about as good as they’re ever going to be, with the improvement between generations getting smaller every time but with production budgets increasing exponentially). The phone analogy doesn’t work because not everyone does that, phones tend to be heavily subsidized by one’s provider (most aren’t paying $1000 out of pocket), and nobody is buying a new gaming PC every year (a more relevant analogy).

Re: Feature: We Worked Out The Best Zelda Game Once And For All, Using Maths

Euler

A listicle of listicles? Quite the concept, I must say. Unfortunately I made the mistake of clicking and reading through all of the links. But this puts too much weight on the so-called experts' opinions; I would be interested in seeing how normal people would make the list. Time for another user score-based ranking I think.
