We suspect that most know the story of Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan and the game the rest of the world received. To give a very short summary, the sequel we saw in the West was a reskin of Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, as Nintendo feared the true sequel would break players outside of Japan; that's why it's such an un-Mario-like Mario game. We all got the real sequel eventually as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, and it is indeed darn tricky.
In any case, a fun bit of social media that lit up the last weekend was this fan effort that blends Lost Levels stage design with the Doki Doki-style gameplay. You can see it in action below.
Once it blew up Sammu explained how the project came to be:
Oh my gosh! Looks like you all liked this a bit! Thank you! For a bit of information this is a GameMaker remake of Mario 1 & 2(TLL/J) that of course I don’t really plan to have a “proper release” because of the Nintendo Ninjas but it’s been more of a learning process for me lol
I had an idea a while back for a remake of SMB1/2/Special with extra features, extra graphics styles and new moves (optional) and widescreen (also optional) and maybe even an original level set, called it Super Mario Bros. Legacy
It does have widescreen and a modern mode that has graphics pretty much like Mario Maker’s! It also has a few HUDs to chose from and you can mix and match all 3 of these.
It's another cool fan project, and maybe in a parallel universe Nintendo released this version and Mario has greatly enhanced upper body strength.

I wanna play it.
Isn't this more of a video than a game?
That's really cool, but it's so disorienting watching Mario jump on top of goombas and koopa troopas without them being stomped immediately.
Its a remake over a remake or is it a remake over a remake over the remake, or the remake of a remake over the remake. woah thats a lot of remake's! (Just like everything nintendo does now days.) BTW This is a joke.
Nice now they could call it Super Mario Bros. 4: The Found Levels (since it's not lost anymore).
Loving this work!
So basically the SMB2 mushroom from Mario Maker 2.
Interesting idea, I'd love to see Nintendo test out a new 2d Mario in doki doki panic style, could be really unique! Especially with multiplayer! I now have a great idea for a game that will never exist, huh. I guess I can dream, at least.
@everynowandben As the article states... its playable, developed with gamemaker... just not released to the public.
That's actually very cool.
@Zequio Seems like vaporware to me
Already love it due to the better jumping and skidding mechanics.
@everynowandben What?
Its a work form an amateur developer, made as a hobby, haven't been finished, and never released to the public, and wont will ever probably.... The article is kind of clear. Is not vaporware if not meant to be released.
@Zequio I read the article before my first comment - I understand what it says. I just don't believe that this "game" actually exists. I could be wrong, but it looks fake - Like someone made a video, and not a game.
The high framerate looks so wrong on these old games. But cool stuff, I guess? Nothing anyone expected or asked for but if it helped him learn programming then that‘s a good thing.
