Re: The Team Behind Earthworm Jim Would Like to Make a Sequel

DoctorWily

On a side note, why bring up the Sega Genesis on a Nintendo site when both EWJ 1 & 2 were on the SNES? I didn't even know it was on the Genesis until I read this article as I played them on my Nintendo system. There's nothing wrong with mentioning Sega, I guess I'm just wondering why he didn't mention both?

Re: The Team Behind Earthworm Jim Would Like to Make a Sequel

DoctorWily

@Ralizah I don't know about that. I'm not saying that Snake was a better fit than EWJ. I just think that Smash is a rare thing that allows all types of characters to fit in. I played as Snake in the original Metal Gear on the NES years before I played EWJ on my SNES. They're both classic characters who deserve a spot on the roster, in my opinion. Now we just need Simon Belmont, Ryu Hyabusa from Ninja Gaiden, and Toon Ganondorf with his dual swords and my life will be complete.

Re: Pokémon Brawler Pokkén Tournament Coming To Wii U Early Next Year

DoctorWily

@Grumblevolcano I don't know why you'd think that when they have said multiple times that they're not going to unveil NX until E3 2016. Nintendo has never launched a console 1 month after an E3 reveal. I expect them to follow their usual pattern by releasing it during Holiday of the following year, ie around November 2017.

Re: Poll: We Want Your Views on Splatoon Version 2.0

DoctorWily

Why is Urchin Underpass the only map that's mentioned as being altered. Has no one noticed the changes made to Moray Towers? The area around the center and platforms at the top of the first ramp are totally different now and have more ground to cover. I haven't played all the maps since the update went live yet but I wouldn't be surprised if other maps have been tweaked as well.

Re: Video: Xenoblade Chronicles Marches Onto The Wii U eShop

DoctorWily

My last name is Reynolds and my friends have been calling me "Reyn" for 20 years. Every game where I create a character, whether it's an MMO, rpg, or even if I just type a name in like in Zelda games, I've also used Reyn for as long as I can remember. I was shocked the first time I saw that there was a character named Reyn in this game. It makes me wonder what the developer's inspiration for the name was. I hope they release this on the North American eShop so I can play it.

Re: Nintendo NX Might Be The First Social VR Platform, Claims Analyst Firm Digi-Capital

DoctorWily

@bluedogrulez I'm with you 100% on this. I'm cool with people talking about their excitement for the NX but we literally have no idea what it is. I wish people would stop speculating and just wait for the official announcement at E3 next year. In my opinion, the problem with this is that the uneducated/uninformed read these sorts of things accept them as fact and then spread it all over the internet as such. The hybrid handheld/home console is the perfect example when the reality is that this idea is just as likely as that one to be true (i.e. not very). I saw an article somewhere for the QoL patents with the a headline along the lines of "Could these be the patents for the NX?" and I just facepalmed.

And for the record, Nintendo's historically shows an an official reveal one year and releases the console the following year. While I won't say it's IMPOSSIBLE for Nintendo to break tradition I think it highly unlikely that NX will release in 2016. Everyone who thinks it's coming right after E3 in the summer or even by holiday 2016 is blinded by wishful thinking.

Be patient people. Good thinks come to those who wait. A delayed console will eventually be good but a rushed console will be bad forever. (And by delayed I just mean not rushed, since we don't even have a release date.... you get the idea)

Re: Rumour: Nintendo NX Won't Be As Powerful As PlayStation 4

DoctorWily

@JoostinOnline

The context of that article was a conversation about the NX. If you want to turn a blind eye, so be it, but I think you are deluding yourself. I've provided evidence showing that it will be a home console and it fits with Nintendo's history of releasing a new home console every 5-6 years. I can't find a single shred of evidence that suggests it's a handheld, especially after they just released the New 3DS. Just more wishful thinking...

Re: Rumour: Nintendo NX Won't Be As Powerful As PlayStation 4

DoctorWily

@LoveSugoi @JoostinOnline

Reggie said it was a home console in a recent Wall Street Journal article: “From a Nintendo perspective, we clearly have strength here in the Americas, we have strength in Europe and we have strength in Japan,” Fils-Aime said. “That isn’t necessarily true of some of our more direct competitors. We’ve also said publicly that we are already hard at work on our next home console and that’s another element we’ll be talking about much later.”

I wish all of the NX talk would go away until Nintendo actually unveils it. All of these rumors about whether it's a handheld/home console hybrid, more/less powerful than the PS4, etc are nothing but speculation. I suspect that at this point Nintendo has an idea for a new concept but is still probably in the process of finalizing details like the specs, design, etc. Nintendo has a history of their consoles hitting the market 1+ years after being revealed at E3 so I think anyone expecting NX to hit before 2017 are fooling themselves.

Re: Nintendo Isn't Talking About NX Because It Doesn't Want Rivals To Steal Its Ideas

DoctorWily

Of course they're right. They're the innovators in this industry and they've been getting copied for decades: D-pad, rumble controllers, motion controls and even the 2nd screen (SmartGlass anyone?) all started with Nintendo and have all found their way to other consoles. The only thing I wish they'd copy from their competitors is their hardware specs and architecture. Not because I care about those things but because I'm tired of hearing about it on every message board. Bring the power and architecture and hopefully the 3rd parties will return and any innovation past that is just icing on the cake.

Re: Super Mario Maker is the Final Name for the Anniversary Title

DoctorWily

For those who wanted to know the games, it was double elimination with the winner of the loser's bracket coming back into the semifinals:

Round 1: 4v4 Splatoon. Top 12 advanced, 4 dropped to Loser's bracket
Round 1 Loser's Bracket: Original LoZ - start at the beginning and collect the first piece of triforce in fastest time. 1 winner advanced to Loser's Round 2
Round 2: 3v3 Blast Ball. Top 8 Advanced
Round 2 Loser's: Super Metroid. First person to beat Mother Brain and get back to the ship advances
Round 3: Mario Kart 8, 200 CC, 3 race cup - Baby Park, Animal Crossing, Big Blue. Top 3 advance to semis
Round 3 Loser's: Balloon Fight. Highest score goes back up to Winner's semifinal
Round 4: 4 player Smash. Top 2 after 2 rounds advance to finals
Final: 4 rounds of Mario Maker. First 3 rounds were played one at a time with a time bonus of 15 seconds given to the winner of each round. John Numbers won 2 out of 3 so was given a 15 second head-start in a simultaneous race to the finish of Round 4, which Numbers won by a landslide. Props to the Devs for those crazy levels!

Re: Super Mario Maker is the Final Name for the Anniversary Title

DoctorWily

@aaronsullivan

I agree with everything you said (Except the event started with Splatoon. Super Metroid was Round 2 of the Loser's Bracket). I wasn't that excited about Mario Maker but after seeing the creativity and complexity of the levels I was blown away. Every fan of platforming needs to have this game in their library.

I also agree with your comments about HungryBox. I'm all for a little bit of competitive trash talk, which is what I thought Reggie was doing, but this fluffy ordon goat didn't know when to quit and went completely overboard, in my opinion. Zero class, zero clue. I wanted to hear what Reggie's "job offer" was going to be and this guy just cut him off and told him to stuff it. And then his "For the President of NoA, you SUCK at Smash" comment... I couldn't be more embarrassed for a member of the gaming community. I don't know what kind of following this guys has, but I hope it goes away.

Reggie was pretty terrible though.... UP + B Reggie!!

Re: Feature: Nintendo Franchises We Want to See at E3 - Star Fox

DoctorWily

I'd like to see Star Fox in a truly open 3D environment, much like what we got with the multiplayer in Star Fox 64. I guessing I'm thinking Rogue Squadron set in the Star Fox universe. I wouldn't mind being able to land and hop out of the plane for some ground based missions or even flying between planets in a seamless universe as someone else suggested. Now that I think about it, I guess I'm asking for Star Fox RPG!

Re: The Splatoon Inkbrush Weapon is Set to Arrive Today

DoctorWily

Apparently, the paintbrush is named "Pablo". Translation of the tweet vis Google Translate:

"June 6 11:00 tomorrow, new weapon "Pablo" is added. Weapon shaped like a brush, power is fast weak proceeds coating speed. And sneak your opponent's blind spot, it will Abiseyo the ink in the barrage. Sub "sprinkler", Special's "Tornado"."

Re: Famitsu Unleashes Xenoblade Chronicles X Score

DoctorWily

"Unfortunately, the Western release date is still alluding us..."

Allude: suggest or call attention to indirectly; hint at

Elude: evade or escape from (a danger, enemy, or pursuer), typically in a skillful or cunning way; (of an achievement, or something desired or pursued) fail to be attained by (someone).

I think you meant the latter.

Re: Interview: Choice Provisions on the Nindie Scene, Future Plans and Why CommanderVideo Should Be in Smash Bros.

DoctorWily

@aaronsullivan I'm not going to say that Shovel Knight wouldn't fit in to the Smash roster, (or any other indie characters like Meat Boy, even though I've never played a Meat Boy game). In fact, I really enjoyed Shovel Knight, I can't wait for the DLC and I think he would be a great addition... but he's only existed for one year. There are other "legendary" characters who are far more deserving and I just feel like Shovel Knight needs to wait his turn. If Nintendo was going to throw in 10 more characters, sure, I'd put Shovel Knight in. But if it's only going to be 2 or 3, I want some classic characters who either are still in Nintendo games or who maybe started on Nintendo consoles and have since moved on. Simon Belmont, Ryu Hyabusa, Earthworm Jim, King K. Rool, the Battletoads, Conker, Banjo & kazooie, any Final Fantasy characters from FFI thru FFVI, etc. all should be considered for Smash before some brand new character that's only a year old.

Re: Feature: The Legend of Zelda on Wii U - What Do We Know So Far?

DoctorWily

@aaronsullivan As I'm sure you know, Link was historically always shown as being left handed until Skyward Sword. They made him right handed to match the motion controls and animations with the fact that most people would be swinging the wiimote with their right hand. If you look at the picture at the top, (and the gameplay video), Link is shown drawing the bow with his right hand, soooo... motion controls confirmed? Maybe multiple controller options so you can play with your preferred style, a la SSB4, while always having at least the gamepad as a map in front of you?

Re: Nintendo NX Will Be About Creating "Fun New Ways To Play"

DoctorWily

@Dipper723

Did you even read my post? I mentioned storage in cartridges. Your quote implied storage in the NES itself, not the cartridges. Your reply basically says exactly what I said. "Just make powerful hardware with sufficent media storage. That's why the NES & SNES were successful." was your quote, not mine.

Re: Nintendo NX Will Be About Creating "Fun New Ways To Play"

DoctorWily

@Dipper723

"Just make powerful hardware with sufficent media storage. That's why the NES & SNES were successful."

You're kidding right? The NES had literally ZERO storage capacity. Most game progress could not be saved, which is why you had passwords that would take you to a set point in the game, i.e. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out. Games that could be saved were contained within that game's cartridge and maintained by a battery within the cartridge itself. I'm pretty sure all of the cartridge based systems were that way (SNES, N64) as they didn't introduce a proper file management system until the GC. N64 had a memory expansion pack but I'm pretty sure that was only to increase processing power as games like Perfect Dark could not be played without it. It was not to increase storage capacity for save files.

NES and SNES were successful because they delivered innovative ways to play games (light zapper, R.O.B., super scope, power glove, track&field pad that you ran on, etc) and the games themselves were great. Even the D-pad on the standard controller was light years ahead of what the Atari (regular joystick) and Coleco (a telephone/remote control abomination) had.

Nintendo still innovates and still produces amazing software but consumers' expectations have risen in terms of what they want from their console and Nintendo has failed to meet the demands of today's standard gamer. I'm certain Nintendo will carry on their tradition of innovation and quality but they do need to acknowledge these demands (better processing specs, OS [for easy 3rd party developer programming], online network capabilities, unified consumer accounts) if the NX is going to be successful.
