After a short delay, Splatoon's fabled Splatfest event is arriving in the West this weekend beginning on the 4th July. If you're in North America the theme is Cats vs. Dogs, and if you're in Europe the choices are more musically orientated: Rock vs. Pop.
We'll be taking part alongside our chosen teammates, but just in case you're not sure how to begin waving your flag of choice we've produced this short video that explains everything you'll need to know on how to sign up and get started ahead of the event.
Have you got an inkling which side you'll be splatting for? Lets us know by leaving a comment down below, and make sure you subscribe to the Nintendo Life YouTube channel to keep up to speed with all the daily videos.

Rock. Robot Rock.
Team Dogs!
(By which I really mean Team Marie.)
Let's go cats!
So this is the voting channel all over again?
@manu0 With gang fights.
Team Rock and Team Dog......death to the pop cat lovers!......ok maybe not death but at least a messy splattering of squid parts
Wasted on me, shoddy internet has meant I rarely get to finish an online match =(
I've been spacing out the 1 player to get my splatoon fix but nearly done that, then I'll move onto the squid amiibo challenges. After that if my internet is still terrible.......well , then I will cry!!
@Gerbwmu made me chuckle
I would pick "team no pets" if I had the choice, but since I own two cats, I guess I'll go that way.
Gee I'd love to participate, but, you know, Nintendo yhought it's be a great idea to make this happen on the 4th of July. Even if anyone happens to be home that day, it's only because there will be guests over.
The North American Splat Fest is going to be a flop, and then they' ll never have anothet because APPARENTLY NORTH AMERICANS AREN'T INTERESTED!
@BLPs No, I'll be going "team cat". But I have pets (cats) because my wife and sons likes them. I personally would rather have no pets.
What exactly do you do in Splattfest?
@BLPs I was made clear in my comment, I was specifically talking about the NA Splatfest. They could have easily made it the 5th or the 3rd, but nope! I will continue to complain until NoA stops having monkeys at the controls.
Can't wait to participate in the Splatfest, go Team Dogs!
@TeeJay Well the originally scheduled Splatfest was on Father's day weekend, so that wasn't much better.
....and some people are toooooo serious.
Team Pop ^o^
Cause... cause I care so much about music that I don't even know how to recognize a rock or pop music, so I went random >__>;;; (And a bit guided by the Sea Sirens commentary actually).
Why no Team Pop-Rock
@BLPs Hey, I get that you're having a bad day or whatever, but you seem to be taking some of these comments personal. I actually think you have a good point about the event's day too.
Oh, man, I have to cast aside my maxed-out Varsity Jacket for a new shirt with only 1 attribute? Small price I suppose. Looking forward to getting some shell so I can scramble the attributes of some of my other gear . . . .
@BLPs - You need to make a trip to Tennessee and see about an endorsement deal.
I actually think there are some positives to holding the event on a holiday weekend. Maybe it will convince some to show Splatoon off to house guests and help sell a few consoles.
Oh man, the European theme is much more interesting to me. Good luck, rockers of the Old World.
@Gerbwmu I agree with your comment about Splatfest intentionally being scheduled on a holiday for more exposure. It makes perfect sense.
@DreamOn Well it's the same as always really, except when you participate in the Turf Wars normal game mode people on your team are always people who voted for the same option as you, and the other team is made of players from the other option. At the end of the 24 hours you receive Super Sea Snails based on your performance and you can give these to Spyke to reroll/improve your gear.
@BLPs - Don't confuse personal views w/ rational or irrational views.
We'll be home playing for awhile, so the 4th is OK for us, but that still doesn't mean I don't think it isn't a really stupid decision by Nintendo to hold it that day, as any sane person can surely realize it's a bad choice. Are people over reacting? Well maybe, but that's what the internet is for, 80% porn, 18% primal scream, 2% other.
And it doesn't matter that the US only makes up 5% of the world's population, as this is primarily a US event, so the whole rest of your argument is spurious at best. It should be the people's job in Japan to know what day is best to have the splatfest, and what day is worst, and what day is indifferent. 52 Saturdays in the US every year and they picked possibly the absolute worst one. Parents do not what or need more things to fight about w/ their kids. Having a 1 day event on that day is total bullsh for the father's on here who kids like the game.
I'm half convinced Reggie did this on purpose. Maybe 3/4 convinced.
Similar argument but different result. I'm a NYer, 9/11 means something to me, and SMM is releasing that day. But SMM is a global release - unlike so many other games where Nintendo likes laughing at us - so the US isn't the only factor. I understand their 30 year anniversary arguement. I'd prefer they had chosen another day, but I understand why, it's logical, most people can easily grasp it. But you are right, big world, and the US is a small part of it.
Back to Splatfest - biggest problem which I haven't seen you mention - Splatfest was resscheduled from weeks earlier. If July 4 was such a good idea why not originally have it then? People were already upset about the night before cancelation, and people we're immediately afraid Nintendo would do something stupid like have it on the 4th. It would have taken hardly any effort on their part to figure out the 4th was a bad idea, people were already dreading it.
Can't defend stupid.
Was going to take pop but all my friends say rock, sadly
On a different note, was there really anyone who needed this guide to know how to join the Splatfest? Basically the game explains it all for you and points you exactly where you need to go, as the video also states.
Quick question: What time will the Splatfest begin on the Eastern side of North America...?
@BLPs
It is not inconsequential to note that The Americas is where the largest chunk of Nintendo's profits come from and that the USA is the single largest source of income for them by country. It does seem a bit silly to not take major American holidays into account for the Splatfest. One thing I am thinking is that maybe this was an intentional move to reduce the total number of participants to cut down on server load.
Already signed up for Europe: Team ROCK!!!
Team Ferrets for the win... I mean go team Dogs!
Everybody in America realizes Splatfest is still going during the Fifth! Sure you can't play it the first day, but it is not like you do not get to play at all, right?
Reggie wasn't at the scheduling meeting. He was out trying to learn how to up+B
@Calllack Oh that's cool. Thanks!
Team Cats! Definitely looking forward to squeezing in a few intense matches (and a July 4th feast on the side).
@pherret022 And yet you have a cat (albeit a very large one) as your Avatar...
Team cats for me- we had many cats when I was growing up and only one dog. Will attend the local parade in the morning, but after that it's Splat time (mostly me getting splatted, but hey). I long since stopped going to fireworks shows. I will just have to find the time to upgrade the t-shirt before Splatfest- I don't have much time this week.
As far as I'm aware Japan also has another splatfest on the 3rd/4th of July, so any Americans taking this as a personal thing from Nintendo has got to consider how many countries are being affected by this. When you take into account Europe / PAL region and Asia and then the America, America isn't that large a percentage of players. If it had been a USA only event on the 4th I would have agreed that Nintendo were being jerks but seeing as it looks like a much bigger Splatfest I really think its unfortunate timing. If you check the Japanese Splatoon Twitter I'm sure they have a Splatfest between Udon Noodles and something else.?!?
@TeeJay Pssst, the USA isn't "North America." A big market, sure. But not all there is.
@willobee Thanks for the technicality.
What about us Aussie Inklings? Do we follow EU on 5th July? Also...pop rock dogs!! I like them all but i'm allergic to cats.
Gameday J Reporting In ~
#TeamDog
RRrrrrock, of course. ... I kind miss those NA teams.. would have so been cats.
mumbles and goes away
@Raptor78 Splatfest between flavours of branded noodles! Yuck.That's the product placement it's been warning about. I hope we don't see that in Europe, but I guess we might.
Why must it be July 4th? That's a huge holiday for us Americans! Usually family is over, traveling places, eating out with family.. Seriously Nintendo? July 5th would be better.
@BLPs - "And why would Reggie have say in the date of an optional event in a video game? Doesn't he have other things to be doing? Where is the logic in that?"
I think choosing the US date IS Reggie's job. Well besides being a mouth piece. He's the President and Chief Operating Officer of NoA. If he isn't going to pick to the splatfest date, then who is? Pres and COO, he has to be doing some decision making, doesn't he? He certainly isn't spending any time at all playing SSB.
@Pigeon to show support for your team if you want. I guess.
Cats! You don't see Mario wearing no stinkin dog costume. Lol
(Bad grammar intended)
Cats are where it's at.
NOooooooo! I totally missed this! I had intentions of picking cats and participating in the first one but I forgot!
