Splatoon changes every week, but the most recent update was one of the biggest yet. It threw in much demanded private matches and the opportunity to team up with friends, while also adding a big batch of new gear, some extra music and boosted level caps.
When you add the latest Splatfest round into the mix, you have plenty of neat variety that continues to flesh out the year's biggest - so far - Wii U release. Now, as these updates are free it rather goes without saying that they're welcome arrivals, but having now had most of the week to tackle the changes, we're keen to know which parts of the update and Splatfest you're enjoying the most.

Tom has been involved in the games industry for over a decade, mostly writing about it or struggling to sell Indie games. Loves reading, writing, hunting Capcom’s fiercest monsters and watching baseball.
Was looking forward to some less laggy games like the last Splatfest but only managed to finish maybe 6 games out of 40ish without "connection unstable" screwing me over.
I wish you asked opinions regarding the revamped Urchin Underpass.
I prefer the earlier version since the sides of the stage were more easy to take control of and getting to the enemy base was much easier. Now the matches seem to be held withing the central part which I guess is a good thing. I just enjoyed dominating the opposing team's base.
LOL, that last question was totally unnecessary, but eh. I needed a laugh. I'd say the best part of the update is the music, even if I don't like some of them. I never asked for an increased level cap because they're only indicators of how much you've been playing Splatoon instead of skill. And since I don't have much Wii U friends, I can't really say anything about the new matchmaking modes. How could I forget the weapons? They're awesome, but I always tend to go back to my old favorites.
I love the new update, but this Splatfest for me has been a slog. I've barely managed to enter a match before I'm disconnected, or getting an "unstable" error. In fact I got disconnected just from matchmaking as I'm writing this!
Once it even disconnected me while the 10 second timer was ticking down, AND I WAS WINNING! Infuriating.
FIX this for the next one Nintendo of Europe! Splatfest are supposed to be FUN!
I love Splatfests enough to sacrifice some sleep before work just to reach "King" status in each one, but the team choices need to be less one-sided. Losing a Splatfest because I chose the less popular team is frustrating, especially when your team won more matches. Last night's Splatfest was a perfect example of what I mean, at least for us American Hot Dogs. Out of curiosity, how did the PAL Splatfest go?
@errantrazor Thanks for the heads up but I imagine most people having issues have already tried these fairly standard remedies and had them do nothing...
I know it didn't help me anyway. I've already tweaked and reset everything tweakable and resetable and still get told my connection is apparently unstable in the vast majority of matches.
Sigh.
Edit: To clarify, I'm using wired. Did try wifi as well but, unsurprisingly, it has the exact same unstable connection issues.
Oh i'd love the update if the game DIDN'T WANT TO D/C ME FROM EVERYTHING NOW! rant/rage
Constant d/cs, people that become invicible until either I die/They die, and more frequent lag. I'm not sure which is worse. Hopefully the usb ethernet fixes this issues or i'm not gonna be a happy camper.
I'm a bit confused about these connection issues people are experiencing. Are the players experiencing connection issues really using wired internet on the Wii U? Nintendo made quite a bit of changes to be more picky about stable internet connections in the 2.0 update, and I surely appreciate that. Turf War, and Ranked and especially the Splatfest are much more fluent and enjoyable now. I only encountered one player with lag during the whole Splatfest.
@errantrazor the new track with yeahs in it and chip tune bloops is awesome. The others are okay too, at least as good as the goth-rock style track IMO.
For the disconnects, put your Wii U in the DMZ in your router. This solved all my issues, except when my 2 kids decide to watch YouTube at the same time and eat all the bandwidth!!
The update overall is pretty good, but nothing groundbreakibg - which is unfortunate, since I was hoping to see some bigger changes/additions than two weapons. Though I gotta say, the adorable winning animation with the Heavy Splatling is part of the reason I'm relentlessly playing it instead of switching back to my .96 Gal.
I think the splatfest are great. Adds a lot of energy to the game. My wife and I even had a babysitter for the morning yesterday just to play it and some housework when the other was playing. My team lost this time, but she won! I hope they do these for a long time to come. Another plus is its the only.time we can.just play regional, which I'd.always prefer. Oh and Private Battles were much needed. Too many super advanced techy hardcore strangers at times. Nice to just play with friends.
For those having connection problems you should try changing your DNS to a faster open one,I've been disconnected far less frequently since I changed it.
Haven't touched Splatoon since before any updates at all. I wish it had off-TV then I'd have continued to play it after launch but I'm probably not going to play it again for a long while as I just don't game on TV's.
I'm suprised new gear or weapons didnt get chosen as favorites. One of the main reason I get addicted is because of the new gear that you can obtain/unlock. The leveling up is going to happen no matter what, so I don't look to much at this. Glad to see splatfest is popular! Though it would be cool one day if Nintendo let you vote or suggest what the next splatfest is going to be. Last note, got to be a Squid - you can travel so much faster that way!
@Nego I saw the same thing - there is a bottle neck that happens in the trees - it gets congested - but I guess they'll modify all of them - maybe revamp this one again - who knows?
@Deviant_Mugen I agree. I averaged about 800 - 1100 per match before the update. Played about 10 matches after the update and was averaging about 400 - 600 per match. I don't know if it was unfamiliarity of the maps or the new weapons were overpowered. I guess I'll have to relearn the game.
I haven't had many connection errors at all. The thing that bothers me is that there is no systematic matchmaking to keep high level player in one group and lower level players in another. I'm only level 12 so I get destroyed when I'm stuck with players who are all over level 20.
Surprised the results of the US Splatfest haven't been posted on Nintendolife yet. Marshmallows won. Marshmallows were more popular, but Hot Dogs had slightly more wins.
My first splat fest where I didn't cap my rank. Blast my busy Saturday! I'm now traveling for work, and don't even know who won in NA!
I too have noticed more connection problems since the patch. I'm wondering if they tried to alter something with matchmaking and it is somehow impacting stability in a negative way. I had maybe 10-15% disconnects which is a huge increase from normal.
@Robotron2084 I'd strongly advise the single player experience as well. it is short but quality stuff.
If anybody wants to spread the word, the Splatoon Wii U bundle at Best Buy is $275 this week. Considering I rarely see the WiiU on sale, and the game itself is $60 in the US, it's a pretty good deal.
Not sure I'm overly excited about "the August update" that Nintendo was making such a big deal about since before the game even launched. I am really happy to see the ranks raised to 50, playing w/ 8 20s all the time was lame, but I think they we're making to big of a deal about it. Should have added 3 maps in the rotation, rainmaker, all 3 rank modes at once, and the Stat leader board that is only currently available on a Japanese website.
Glad for the changes they did make, don't think it lived up to the "August update" hype. Points to Nintendo for actually getting it out in early August, that was unexpected.
Best part about splatfest, playing in the dark w/ the day glow ink. If splatfest were still daytime it would get old fast, but I really like the night time look, it's almost like playing on new levels. Camp Trigger fish plays like a different map in turf war from ranked modes, so that was a learning experience as I rarely play turf war anymore. Probably another reason I like Splatfest.
Wait can you play online more than one player now? The lack of multiplayer online is what held me back from buying it. Like as in two players on one console?
This update isn't free we paid for incomplete game when it launched 70 bucks it was dry bones when I scooped this game up. This should've been included on launched day. I mean honestly would you pay for these updates?
@dariusq: They already changed that, haven't you heard? The actual battle results now have way more weight than the polls.
@Mikau94: Then you're doing something wrong. I have played with all kinds of lvl players and sometimes you have like 7 players with doubledigits and one player with lvl 8 and that one player is better than everyone else. So if you get destroyed, maybe try a little harder? ^^ Also, it doesn't have to do with matchmaking. The game matches you with similar-levelled players, but when there aren't any available, it goes up and down to the nearest levels. It does this recursively until it finds eight players. That's the standard way of matchmaking, most of the online games work that way. And BTW, the update did change something about matchmaking: When your rank changes (like friday, I was playing with seven other C+ players and when I got B-, I found myself back in the main lobby), you get thrown out of the match lobby so that you get matched with more fitting players.
@DreamOn: really? Why is that? I don't get why gaming on the gamepad should be better than playing on a TV? Then maybe you should play on a monitor lol. ^^ I'm just saying, you're missing a whole lot of fun there. And there's a reason why you can't play it off-screen: It wouldn't work!
@TheAceofMystery: Why's that? It's not like they just raised the cap, they changed the whole algorithm for levelling. I found it very refreshing and it gives more of an incentive to play. But at the same time, all the other new things are equally an incentive (although I would've played anyway, just a bit less). I voted for the level cap but actually I would've wanted to vote for all changes equally (even hearing new music is exciting when you have played the game so much already).
@Robotron2084: Honestly, why the hell did you wait so long? I can absolutely recommend the single player mode, it's the best way to get used to the game's mechanics before entering into the real fight. When I had bougt the game, I actually wanted to start online right from the beginning but then I found me playing the singleplayer for a while, just because it's so much fun! It is heavily Mario-Galaxy-inspired and in my opinion it's not too short either. I hadn't played the SP mode for a while but now I am continueing it, still haven't beaten it.
@Nego: ?! Are you serious? The sides were less useful before, there was less ground to ink, they were way to narrow and you couldn't escape from there quickly to help your teammates in the middle. Before, the game was focussed on the central part, now it has widened. Can't understand how you could experience it the other way around since the update.
@Deviant_Mugen: Really? For me it was the opposite. Even when I lose I now get 800-900, that rarely happened before. I actually score more points than before.
@ningeek185: No, you should fix your broken internet. There are no servers, Splatoon works with P2P. So if there's something wrong it's your internet connection or the connection of the other players. Maybe try what @OorWullie wrote. @Varelius@Peanutosan@Deviant_Mugen@whodatninja@Rexx@shigulicious: Have you ever thought about the possibility that it's not Nintendo's fault? Maybe you guys have too much other stuff running over your internet line (Smartphones, PCs, maybe a botnet? who knows) or your connection is just too slow. Or the connection of the players that you play with is faulty. After all, Splatoon runs over P2P, there are no servers. So before pointing the finger on the devs, maybe you have yourself or someone else to blame. Maybe try what @OorWullie wrote or get a faster internet connection (which is a big requirement for online gaming, a 15Mbit line is not enough). @Mush123: Yeah I also don't understand what people are complaining about. Maybe it's mainly a US thing? I got a 200mb cable connection (Europe, Germany) and I very rarely experience lags or disconnects.
give me the ability to play with 2 people online on the same console. I don't care that player 2 couldn't launch to teammates. If that's really such a big deal for them make launching some sort of button combination on the controller.
Good luck w/ that. They should have been done by now. All day. Every day. I only saw them once, 8AM launch morning. Too many SSB amiibo being made I think. I'm guessing wooly Yoshi is a different factory line. But they better be making a TON of those after making us wait 3 months. No pre-order nonsense just a seemingly unlimited supply on store shelves.
I am torn on Splatoon in general. I like how the painting mechanic gives the game the same feel as hockey with control of the neutral zone and trap defense. On the other hand the actual weapon mechanics are incredibly broken. The poor snipers have to deal with lasers giving away their position and where they are aiming, not to mention they are worthless for targeting squid. The smg like guns have such a large spread and such a short distance. They aren't great for combat and their limited range is a big negative when trying to gain ground in neutral territory. There are a lot of weapons that are a waste of memory and make the game feel more like an rpg than a skill shooter. I have considered trading it a few times as I have completed the fantastic single player campaign and now all I have to do is grind through ranked, which is ok except I am getting really bored of having to use a splattershot to be competitive.
Once again, I get disconnected in about 8 out of 10 matches, similarly to the previous splatfest. The update was great however. Love the new weapons and extra gear.
@shani Umm, excuse me?! Do yourself a favor and look at half the comments on here. Obviously it's a server issue, not an Internet connection problem. I have a 25 Mbps download speed. Before you say that my internet is broken, maybe reconsider what you're saying.
I'm loving the Slosher, it's my favorite weapon now! I hope they come out with different types of Sloshers and Heavy Splatlings soon; too many inkstrikes!
As for the new music, I like most of the new tracks. However, some tracks are too quiet, and are hard to hear while playing the game.
I only wish that popularity in Splatfest didn't effect the final results. I don't think it's very fair to win by popularity.
This is how you nurture a community. By giving them buckets and ridiculous headgear.
No seriously, GOTY for me so far. This game has kept me interested since the end of May. Great content roll out, wasn't initially sold on the way they were planning it, but I'm eating humble pie now.
@rjejr I just want to play my daughter in the same room in an online team and maybe now I can do that. $275 Splatoon bundle Wii U at Best Buy would give me a second Wii U and a way to play local two player against the internet. Tempting.
@shani Before the revamp I could effortlessly go through the right-hand side "balcony" all the way to the opposing team's base and wreck havoc, keeping the enemy at bay while the rest of my team took care of the central part of the stage. The update made that more difficult thanks to the third opening and the non-inkable section right on top of the wall you can swim to get up there.
The update is all meh to me. There's only like two new pieces of music from what I can tell so far, and the older music almost never seems to play, did they remove some tracks?
I really like the new Urchin Underpass. As for Squad and Private Battles, I doubt I'll ever test them two out.
@darth2d2 not all of the weapons are designed for the same thing. Weapons that have a better spread but shorter distance are clearly designed to cover ground and not attack power. Weapons like the Splattershot Pro and .96 Gal are better at killing but leave covering ground as a secondary. Naturally, some weapon sets will be better than others in different modes. I prefer Splattershot Jr. for Turf Wars, Krak-on Splat Rollers for Splat Zones, and Slosher for Tower Control. And when you consider the secondary and special weapons, I actually find that all of the sets are pretty balanced and all useful in at least one mode.
I like Squad Battles, but honestly the implementation of 3's are VERY bad. 3's will often get paired up with 4's and the slight respawn decrease will not make up for that lost person. It's less damage and less territory covered. I really think they should have the 3 pick up a random solo player if they come up against a group of 4 like most other shooters do but since Splatoon requires the squad be in a separate queue than solo players, that will never work.
Last night, I was playing with 2 friends and for a while, we got a bunch of 3s and then they gave us nothing but 4s and we lost literally every match. The worst part is that we ended up facing the same team of 4s three times in a row before switching to the next group of 4 and being forced against them a couple in a row. Not once did we repeat any of the groups of 3 though. As it stands now, a 3 on 4 match is a free win for the group of 4 unless they rebalance it. I would honestly rather fight against a group of A-rank as a C-rank if it meant it were 3 on 3 the whole time.
@shani Because i'm actually IT. To prove a point, i've gone to competitions back when I was in high school. Trust me, I know what i'm doing. My line is jitter free, packet loss free, completely stable, and most certainly capable.
If it was working perfectly fine and then completely breaks after a patch, then you tell me how thats my fault. ALL of my friends have this issue. Theres no way its our fault, something was messed up in the recent patch. They changed how the netcode works, and i'm certainly hoping its just my wii u's wireless (even though literally everything else runs perfectly fine as is, smash included.)
It never hurts to try a wired connection, I don't like just giving up. Especially considering I already sunk 60 into the game.
@Robotron2084 Ok that I can totally understand. It can be frustrating when you're working so much that you can't even find time for something to balance/compensate.
MG is also one of my all-time favourites (actually, MG2 is even better and two-player coop works far better than in the first one), so have fun with that, too!
@ningeek185: No I'm not saying everyone having issues got a broken internet, that would be too much to be a coincidence. But just a few days ago there was someone here complaining in a similar way and he eventually found out that something with his internet connection was wrong. Anyway, Splatoon is a P2P game, so there are no servers.
@Nego: That's exactly why I like the revamp so much, it's not that easy anymore. Before it was way too easy and unbalanced.
@Varelius: As I mentioned before, it doesn't have to be your fault, it can just as well be the internet connection of the other players faulty. After all, it's a P2P game, so if someone got a bad internet connection that affects everyone. But It's funny that you experience more problems since v2.0. I was experiencing more lag (ink takes some time to cover the ground) before the recent update and that started with the first minor update (v1.3).
@shani It's only better for me. Gaming for me is tied to the handheld experience controls and screen have to be close to my face and positionable for my comfort. But that's fine because most of my friends tell me they could never play games on a small screen. There's also plenty of people who would not want to play a Wii U game that only plays on the gamepad. I'm just the opposite and the minority that has a strong preference for handheld only gaming when I can manage it
@aaronsullivan that is certainly a solution but it's definitely a shame someone would have to resort to buying a second Wii U and a second copy of the game just to play with someone in the same room, isn't it? The lack of local co-op online multiplayer is a glaring omission.
@Captain_Gonru - Based on the price of Ryu in SSB, I've been saying $4.99 gets you 1 amiibo, $12 for all 3. Which seems like a lot to me, but almost all DLC besides MK8 and HW seems like a lot to me. I can't believe SSB has hats and shirts listed separetly, they couldn't even package them. They should have made the hats 5c and the shirts 10c so we could officially say they were nickel and diming us. ba da bum bum
@aaronsullivan - You're a very good dad. When I bought my 2nd PS3 for Christmas I was looking into a Wii U but there really wasn't all that much it could do. PS3 had HBO go and cloud saves w/ PS+, and even w/o cloud saves I can easily move my saves back and forth on a thumb drive. And my kids are addicted to Minecart as you know, 2 on the basement tv and me upstairs, all for $20. A 2nd Wii U doesn't really offer much, and it was $130 more.
As little as I use the GMaepad screen, I'd be more than happy playing on the tv w/ the pro while my kid played on the GMAepad, I just wouldn't use inkstrike or jump. Or w/ alitle bit of programming know how th etv would overlay to the map every time we die and spawn, or when we hit the R3 instrike button. It really doesn't seem that hard when I say it. And after about 100 hours playing spaltoon I think I have jumped in a battle exactly once, b/c it was a 88% - 6% 4 vs 1 match so I was bored. But again, maybe L2 cold bring up an overlay map then move an X and jump? Sounds reasonable.
Would you have both Wii U in 1 room or 2 rooms? I'm not sure how good your daughter is at playing. My oldest obviously would be fine, but my 10 year old has sworn off spaltoon as of a couple of days ago, he can't handle the stress of losing, not even in turf war. Poor kid.
The new update seems great. I've enjoyed a bit of private battles so far, but haven't got round to squad battles yet. I'm loving most of the new music.
@DreamOn Ok, there's nothing wrong with that. I know how it feels to be a minority on that kind of things...
I sometimes play (mostly VC or indie) or read/watch something on the gamepad, but if I do that for several hours it gives me neck pain.
@rjejr The closest to a somewhat working way of 2 player local online mode that came to my mind would be both players sharing the Gamepad. Ideally - otherwise it would mean one player always interfering with the other's Gamepad - If you have two Pro Controllers and two Wiimote+ (for the gyro aim, must! ), you could even just put the Gamepad on the table as a shared map.
I actually use the Inkstrike a lot (before it was Bomb Rush), especially for Splatzones(must) and Tower Control. But I also see it used a lot in Turf War (where I usually use a different setup). I use jumping mostly after respawn. Besides - and this might even be the most important - I use the map in between to see which areas are inked in what colour or where my teammates are (and then only sometimes I jump). So I would miss a lot without the Gamepad.
@C-Threep yeah, in settings, internet, connect to the internet, click on [your internet connection], change settings, DNS, do not auto-obtain, then enter the two DNS numbers. And then hit save, of course.
@shani The amount I did play tells me how good of a game this. I typically only make exceptions to play for extended anounts of time on the TV for games like Zelda in the past. It's a brilliant game and if they ever made a potable sequel like Smash Bros got that'd be unbelievable and I'd play it to death
Why is Urchin Underpass the only map that's mentioned as being altered. Has no one noticed the changes made to Moray Towers? The area around the center and platforms at the top of the first ramp are totally different now and have more ground to cover. I haven't played all the maps since the update went live yet but I wouldn't be surprised if other maps have been tweaked as well.
For those having issues with Wi-Fi connections, there are two things you need to do. First, go into your internet settings and choose to manually set up a connection. You'll want to go here for instructions on how to do that: http://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1643/p/431. Play around with the ip address settings until you find a good set-up, you'll want to base your custom ip address off of a computer that doesn't get a lot of traffic, (you can access your computers ip address by opening the command prompt on windows systems and tying "ipconfig" and press enter. The number you want is your IPV4).
Once you've manually set up the connection, go into your router setting and enter your firewall settings, in there is a thing called the DMZ. What this is a small partition outside of your firewall that allows free access from any system. This is usually only something you do for consoles and NEVER (unless absolutely necessary) for your personal computer as it makes the system vulnerable to hacking. Just enter the IP Address that you used for the Wii U into the DMZ settings and save and quit. This should help fix any issues you're having with connectivity.
Thanks for the hot tips, here's one for you - perhaps practice a bit of assertiveness on comment threads. I interpreted your post as being pretty pointed and rude. My connection is just fine, but Australian internet is notoriously patchy and slow. It's never been a real issue in Splatoon until the August update though.
@shani Splatoon is a server based game, it is not P2P. When is says partner device it means sever, if it was P2P we would be getting Smash Bros level lag. And the internet issues are a US thing, internet sucks over here. Google Fiber can't get here fast enough.
@Mikau94 Level has no bearing on how good you are. Levels are the same thing that are in CoD, just bragging rights and proof that you play a lot.
@Skywalker There is a serious misconception about gaming. I hardly uses any bandwidth. Videos are what use the most, by far.
@JacketsNest101 Actually, theres only a matchmaking server. Any in game connection is fully P2P.
oh, and DMZ is to open all ports. It only affects actually connecting to a player, not staying connected to them. its port forwarding for dummies or its best used on consoles for people that play a wide array of games that use various different ports. It would just be a hassle opening each an every single one seperately. You'd run out of space to open ports in the modem/router.
TL:DR - Matchmaking server only. P2P in matches. DMZ only port forwards all ports, does not have any effect on stability.
@Varelius I had always heard it was server based, guess that would explain a few things. Where did you get the stability stuff in the DMZ from my post? I was just explaining it how I was told it works, with it essentially being an area outside of the firewall. I guess I could see how that is port forwarding.
@shani I've been that level 8 before who wrecked the other team. The teams are usually well matched (way better than CoD) and I completely agree that level doesn't equal skill but experience is a huge factor.
@JacketsNest101 because that would only help with actually getting into a match, not the d/c errors thats kicking people out of matches.
DMZ would set you to NAT type 1 which is no firewall and completely connected to the internet. This just means your NAT is in a perpetual state of Open. So thats all it'd fix: Increasing your chances of connecting with more players.
Just played for 4 straight hours. I had 1 disconnect error near the end of a match, and once a message came up saying connection issue but the match kept going. That's over about 50 matches.
It was also cool to not see a single level 20, almost everyone is mid 20s, I saw 1 or 2 30, I think 31 was the high, and several teens. W/ all those mid 20 numbers even the teens don't seem so out of place.
But most importantly, having new levels means even losing in tower control still means some thing as rank goes up, even a little. Out of about 20 losses only a few were by ko so the points add up. Currently sitting at 25, B-90. I started the night at 23 B-80 so 4 hours only got my rank up 10 points but at least I got to level up twice and earned a new piece of headgear.
I don't rate it because my internet connection lately hasn't let me go through a single match without disconnecting lol glad everyone else is enjoying it.
Don't know what they changed from the server/network coding side, but the game's basically broken now. I've talked with over 7 other people (in person) who have been having this issue as well.
I could play for several hours before the 2.0.0 update and get disconnected maybe 3 times, now all I ever get is <The Connection is Unstable> and <Cannot Connect to Partner's Device>. I've spent the last 2 days troubleshooting the router, ISP and Wii U system, and nothing I've done has fixed this thing.
Until Nintendo get's it's $#!+ together, I'm completely unable to play Splatoon. This isn't any individual person's system or ISP connection or router; this is on Nintendo's side. They need to fix what they broke.
I've had the game for nearly two weeks, and it's been played a LOT in my house. My son and daughter are both in to it and I'm playing in the evening. I've no idea how good or bad broadband is in my area, but we'd had no problems at all, seriously. I'm in Northern Ireland and with Sky Broadband, the game works perfectly for us. We've been having so much fun online we haven't even looked at the offline single player stuff yet, but I'm gonna get to that soon. Fantastic game, in our opinion
I usually have a look and see what friends are playing before I jump in so I probably joined you! I'm not great but I'm getting better, had a good run last night, that lazy cat even game me some cash because my... vibe was good or something lol
@Deviant_Mugen That happened to me too a few week ago before the update. I traded the game with the intention of buying it again once the terrible online was sorted. Seems thats still not the case...The troubling thing is (as you will no doubt see) is that it only happens to certain people. Most have enjoyed a super smooth connection. And nintendo are not saying squat on what the issue is. It cant be the speed as I am on fibre and I know people who are on 100+ mps speed with the same "sorry we lost the connection" issue. Its strange and I have mentioned several times nintendo life should do a peice on this, but never get a reply. Id love to play splatoon as for a while it was an incredible game. But with this weird issue there is no way I am repurchasing until it is acknowledged and fixed.
@jariw I promise you you are not half as confused as I am! Fibre optic broadband connection. No issues with my other consoles (or other wiiu games for that matter) and tried EVERY solution and nothing. Every single match brings up the "connection unstable" message. Ive even rang my isp and they were adamant that it wasnt a unstable connection on their side and I believe them (a rarity). I really want nintendo to address this. The big problem is it only seems to affect 1 in maybe 20 players. So most people, like yourself, declare that its fine for them.
@InterwebUser True, but splattershot Jr. doesn't compete in paint coverage with the rollers or even the dual squelcher. The limited range and reduced mobility while firing actual results in the user wasting paint on an already painted area. If your mobility increased like it does for rollers during use it might be reasonable, but because it does not it actually leaves the player at a disadvantage. Even in something like turf wars the limited combat ability reduces the effectiveness because it is easier for the competition to suppress you in the neutral zone and a win only requires majority, not all of the map. If Nintendo made it take 1.5 times the amount of paint to cover opposing paint than it does fresh ground then some weapons may have more value, but as it is A ranked players use splattershots, rollers, gals, and squelcher more than anything else.
@darth2d2 I actually cover way more ground with my Jr. than I can with my roller or a Squelcher. (I've gotten over 1500 pts in Turf Wars with it.) You just have to know how to splat and quickly squid up and continue to do that. It's actually incredibly efficient and I feel like the rollers kind of have a ceiling as to how efficient they can be at covering ground. I for sure think they're easier but not as good if you know how to handle the Jr. But yeah, I'm at A rank and I won't take my Jr. into ranked battles because it's not specialized for combat. Although it isn't as bad as you say. All you really have to do is get in close and turn on your bubbler once they start firing at you. Guaranteed kills unless your aiming is off or you didn't get in close enough.
But I can definitely understand it not being your thing if you're more into fighting over covering ground.
@InterwebUser I am into winning is all. If it were pure ground cover I might go with an Aerospray, but combat is the core of Splatoon. If you are splat, not only do you loose time waiting for respawn, you loose time travelling through your defensive zone before you can start painting. Once there you are at the front line and likely to be splat again if you don't have a bubble ready. I have tested every weapon in game and in the test yard. There are serious imbalances that become obvious if you put time in with every weapon. Rollers for example don't just cover ground well, but they have a one hit splat and they have longer range than aeros, splattershot, or blasters and while they don't have a bubbler they do have the kraken.
So I tried deleting and redownloading the update. If the update was what caused it maybe it was just a bad download. That may have been the case as i've been playing for two hours now with only one "connection unstable".
So i've you've tried everything else, delete an redownload the update. Still waiting on my usb ethernet cord to get here to hopefully get rid of the issue completely.
I knew there was some meme I was supposed to be referencing in that post but I couldn't remember what it was. i figured you would get my meaning though.

"I'm a kid and a squid, and can't choose" is at 100%
yes
This poll needs a "This update completely broke online play for me, so it sucks!" option. Because that's what happened to me.
@Deviant_Mugen Same here.
Was looking forward to some less laggy games like the last Splatfest but only managed to finish maybe 6 games out of 40ish without "connection unstable" screwing me over.
:/
@Deviant_Mugen
Uh huh, I only got into about 25% of the matches and gave up after a couple of hours. Sorry #teamsouthpole
@Deviant_Mugen

Should have asked about the new music.
The new songs, to me, are a bit bland. They don't have the energy of the old ones and are not as memorable.
For those with connectivity problems:
http://nintendoeverything.com/a-note-about-recent-connectivity-issues-with-splatoon/
@errantrazor Turning the Wii U off and on does not work. That's like the first thing I tried.
Haven't even tried it yet 😞 not enough time for all these awesome games and updates!
I still have to go home to try Splatoon v2.0 -_-
Otherwise I am a kid and a squid and can't choose
I actually haven't played the game for a couple of weeks so I'll be sure to come back and get addicted with it!
Primary - 208.67.222.222
Secondary - 208.67.220.220
I don't understand why people are complaining about getting disconnected all the time.
I can be in a Skype call and play Splatoon online without getting a single disconnect. Heck, I don't even use a wired connection.
I do have 100Mb broadband through fiber optic though.
I've lost faith if the most popular new feature is the level cap increase
@OorWullie Welp, I've had 3 games in a row without it crapping out so that seems to have helped a bit. So far anyway ;p
Cheers Wullie
Edit: Damn... spoke too soon. Game 4 pooped itself.
The Splatfest is the best thing evah!
I've had a few connection issues, but it hasn't been THAT detrimental.
@Whopper744 - completely agree, the Splatfests are fantastic.
Nintendo needs to fix their broken servers.
They should have a "I have no friends" for the Private Matches and Squad Battles poll. hahahahha...ha ....ha..h...ummm.. yeah.
I rarely have connection errors. I have uverse 18 mbps.

For future Splatfests I wish they'd make Popularity & Wins into separate categories instead of lumping them together.
@Captain_Gonru I want Inkling Boy restocked and Squid amiibo available on its own!
@Varelius @Peanutosan @Deviant_Mugen @whodatninja @Rexx @shigulicious: Have you ever thought about the possibility that it's not Nintendo's fault?
@Squiggle55 Playing Splatoon without using the Gamepad for motion controls is just....not a good idea.
@Captain_Gonru - amiibos restocked
The best part of this update is obviously the Squid Girl gear. x3
Yes, it's a server problem.
Haven't tried the Slosher yet but I really like the Heavy Splatling and I love Splatfests. Yesterday's was my first.
Oh what a game!!!
NX version better have easier coop play.
Don't know about you guys but not having two Wii u remotes kills it for me.
@Peanutosan I didn't have connectivity issues so maybe the problem is on your end... playing on WiFi or slow broadband maybe
@damc34 scrolled down and saw other post... sucks when troubleshooting doesn't work out like expected.
I hate the losing animation with the splatling...
My issue with Splatfest is its the same dang thing every time. But I still like it!
Had 3 nice battles then suffered from constant unstable connections and connection errors. Sucked all the fun out of it. Step it up Nintendo.
@OorWullie is that a setting I would change on my Wii U? Sorry, I ain't all that internet savvy.
@Mush123 I've got 25mb download and I can run a skype call (no video) and play Splatoon in Ranked and I rarely have a disconnect.
@shani
@shani
I've been that level 8 before who wrecked the other team. The teams are usually well matched (way better than CoD) and I completely agree that level doesn't equal skill but experience is a huge factor.
I really wish they would update the 1-on-1 offline battle mode to take advantage of the new maps.
Even if I don't use it all too often, I think it would be an easy fix which would make the game appear more well-rounded.
@Sakuraichu
Sounds like we have our next Splatfest question!
Who will win? The kids or the Squids?
@MJKOP I saw you appear in one of my games the other day,I think you were on my team.Did you actually join me or was it just some crazy coincidence?
I usually have a look and see what friends are playing before I jump in so I probably joined you! I'm not great but I'm getting better, had a good run last night, that lazy cat even game me some cash because my... vibe was good or something lol
Your a kid now, your a squid now,
oh wait. your an octoling. gets splatted thanks to mlg-ness
Connection unstable
Unable to comment on Splatoon update.
Squad battles and private battles are the best new option. To me they're basically the same feature - new ways of playing with friends.
@Captain_Gonru "horse armor"
I knew there was some meme I was supposed to be referencing in that post but I couldn't remember what it was. i figured you would get my meaning though.
