If you're a long-standing Xenoblade series fan, then you're probably used to hearing the same lines of dialogue over and over again, whether it's post-battle, or when opening a chest or gathering items.
Xenoblade Chronicles has a few of these — who can forget "I'm really feeling it?" from Shulk, something we abuse constantly here at Nintendo Life when we're covering Xenoblade news. And "Now it's Reyn time" has also entered the pantheon of video game memes. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 had even more, including a couple of lines — "Think you can take me?" and "Don't forget me" — that were edited in a patch.
So what does Xenoblade Chronicles 3, the latest entry in the series, add to the hall of Xenoblade quotes? Well, here's one you'll be hearing a lot of.
Eunie, a Keves soldier and the team's Medic Gunner, has one post-battle quip that we've certainly heard a fair amount of — especially this writer. Ina lovely, think British accent, Eunie — after ally Lanz says "That was over way too soon!" — declares "Hear that, Noah? Lanz wants something a bit meatier." It's like poetry. Except this is a JRPG where you fight a lot of battles, so you're going to be hearing it pretty much constantly throughout your playtime.
The frequency of Eunie's little quote has got fans reminiscing about their favourite Xenoblade quotes, even blending them together to create some memes for the ages.
Of course, Eunie isn't the only character who has something to say. Sena, Agnus's tiny little hammer-wielder, is a cheery, pleasant little kid who's determined to let you know something about herself:
This one's quite cute, honestly. Sena's pretty small and she's usually carrying around a huge weapon. She loves training and sparring. So she's just trying to amp herself up a bit!
Going back to Lanz, if you keep him as one of the Defender classes, he'll be trying to keep aggro off of the other party members. So you'll be hearing plenty of this from him:
He's also the MVP, but you were probably already thinking that.
The frequency of some of these quotes has been drawing a lot of attention from people playing the game, with some — including Xenoblade YouTuber Enel — thinking there should be more dialogue just to drown out some of the more-common quotes. Perhaps we'll see a Xenoblade Chronicles 2-style patch in the future?
For now, we'll have to bask in the frequency, glory, joy — whatever you want to call it — of JRPG battle and field quotes in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. You won't be forgetting these any time soon.
In fact, for Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii, the developers had to cut out some battle dialogue. Did You Know Gaming? revealed this in a video published this weekend, where the channel also brought up changes to one particular cutscene involving protagonist Shulk.
If we were to pick our own Nintendo Life quote, it's got to be "Hello there lovely people" hasn't it? Anyway, if you're a Xenoblade fan, share your favourite Xenoblade field and battle quotes with us in the comments!

Hasn’t this always be the same with post combat sound effects? I mean, with FFVII the sound effect after a fight is always ‘tu tu tu tuuuu du nu tununuuuuuu’
(You heard that in your head, didn’t you?)
Yeah... Can't really argue with this at all. It was alright at first, but 20+ hours in and I just wanna slam my head against a wall. I can literally hear most of the battle dialogue even when not playing.
THINK YOU CAN TAKE ME DON’T FORGET MEH
I’ve heard all of the above examples multiple times already (the meaty one is particularly annoying that even Noah doesn’t bother responding to Eunie).
They’re memeable and hammy. But not quite as endearing as Reyn and pals.
Apart from a bit of Rada school graduate, Eastenders wannabe, hammy cases (yes, you, Eunie) the voice acting is great. But for the cutscenes only. I would love to turn off the inane battle chatter. It's so grating.
'Ere that No-uh? Lanz wants sumthing a bit quieter! Cor luv-a-duck. Sparks yer Uncle!
I had "hear that, Noah? Lanz wants something a bit meatier" three times in a row in my first play session. Which would've been fine had I not been one-shotting mooks who couldn't just let me walk by.
You want something meatier Lanz? Then tell those caterpillar things to chill and mind their own business!
"Yes! Eunie's da boss!"
What? You're not really feeling it?
I've been playing mostly on my LG C1 OLED tv, in bed with split Joy Con in each hand and the volume up high to fully enjoy that amazing soundtrack! And yeah it does get old hearing the same lines over and over again after each battle, but other then that I'm enjoying my experience!
“Eat it”
“Have it”
… what the hell is it?
I love how the game has fictional swear words and idioms, because I enjoy seeing non-brits online trying to work out which are made up and which are just British.
Have I missed the UK sales chart? I'm interested to see how well (or not) it has done.
@PtM true
One of the dumbest most annoying traditions in this medium, spamming the same repetitive voice lines originated from arcade games where they needed to attract people in a loud environment but they got cargo culted into console games and became fetishized around the PS2 era leading to it never going away or being addressed in any meaningful way like simply recording more unique lines and variants.
It wouldn't be Xenoblade without cheesy voice lines.
"CHECK OUT THIS SICK NEW SKILL"
"CHECK OUT THIS SICK NEW SKILL"
"CHECK OUT THIS SICK NEW SKILL"
"CHECK OUT THIS SICK NEW SKILL"
"CHECK OUT THIS SICK NEW SKILL"
And this is why adding voice acting doesn't always improve the game.
Also this is really common on most JRPGs.
@GrailUK apparently the stats are delayed this week for some reason, @AlanaHagues any update at all?
One of the benefits of playing with Japanese voice over, I have no idea what they're saying at the end of every battle haha.
There should be an option to only turn off the battle dialogues and it’s inexcusable.
At least it’s not as bad as the “rapper” in X. “Not to sound cliché, but this world sucks” has to be the worst lyric I ever heard.
@sevex They sure seem to be talking about saké a lot 🤔
@Friendly
Yes.... Yes I did
@Mr_Fox Hah really? I'll have to pay closer attention.
@Mr_Fox This yet another time that I am eternally grateful for my ability to ignore music. I vaguely remember the music from Xenoblade Chronicles X, but the only thing that ever stood out to me was the girl vocalizing that sounded like nails on a chalkboard after the second time through the loop.
I'm enjoying X3 so far, but I feel like every game is memeable.
The BRITISH accents do make me chuckle though!
HAHA, YOU'RE A LIFESAVER, LANZ!
I get the complaints, but I gotta say I love Sena's voice actress specially when Sena is getting ether hahaha "Yesss give me some of that SWEET ETHER"
@Otoemetry Nothing yet, unfortunately!
@AlanaHagues 💔
"If you're a long-standing Xenoblade series fan, then you're probably used to hearing the same lines of dialogue over and over again..."
...and it's one of the bigger reasons that the series has never "clicked" with me so far (in spite of the fact I've purchased every installment). Yes, I figured out that you can mute the battle voices, but the battle mechanics (mash buttons, rinse, repeat) and hubs that are overly sprawling just for the sake of scale have proven a deterrent from bothering to finish either of the first two installments. Oh, and the Nopons; I get that practically every JRPG series has its obligatory "cute" race/critter, but they're hands down the most irritating that I've come across. I loved X on the Wii U and played more than 200 hours of it, probably because it reminded me of what a GOOD modern Phantasy Star Online would look like, but for me personally, even though I eventually come back to the mainline games to play through them some more, they feel like a chore in a lot of ways. I admit that I was surprised to see XC3...a THIRD installment...announced for the Switch, let alone only half a year or so before its release and certainly the glowing reviews it's gotten. I'll give it a chance as I have the others, but I'm keeping my expectations tempered.
I know a lot of folks are excited for the Switch's first-party offerings for this half of 2022, but a third game in the Xenoblade series, a second release for Splatoon!, and yet another Pokemon release leave me wanting more when there are still some great IPs that haven't gotten a new installment this console generation (and some far longer than that). I still think Advance Wars: Reboot Camp got the shaft unnecessarily, too. I hope Nintendo has more games to announce between now and Christmas, in any case.
It’s good to keep a record.

@AtlanteanMan my friend, it's nice that you're giving XC3 a chance, but given your comments it seems unlikely that you'll enjoy it. That's more true if you didn't beat the first two installments.
@maulinks I think the biggest reason why I've tried to support the mainline series and given them all a chance is because of the great impression that X left me with; I don't play many non-turn-based (meaning button-mashing, combo-attack, "action", control one party member at a time) RPGs to begin with, but having played PSO 1 and 2 on the Dreamcast and GameCube, X really just immediately clicked and won me over; even the side quests kind of had that same feel to them. I'd actually jump on a Switch port if it was announced. I wish I could find that same magic in the mainline games, but so far it just hasn't happened.
I feel this isn't only game with such issue...
I have about 23h played, not quite annoyed yet.
With the first Xenoblade it did get to me, maybe it was voice actors? Anyways, for me it was resolved by changing langauge to japanese which was MUCH less annoying (idk why, maybe because I do'n't understand the language so I won't pay attention)
"I'm the girl with DeGaulle!"- Charles DeGaulle's girlfriend
@maulinks
I enjoyed first XC and I actually enjoyed X as well. And so far I am enjoying XC3 as well. I don't think I ever finished X, got quite far tho. I'd love see remake.
XC2 the other hand.. I think I've played 10h or so. I found it extremely confusing system and there was something that didn't catch my attention right away like other three..I was just bored from the start. And confused. And didn't like voices, but usually switching voices to japanese help with that issue
Maybe I give it another go when I finish this one.
Yep, just like the first game. Although 2 did have some. Really feels like XC3 will be a big seller for the series because of reception. Hell, it may even mainstream Xenoblade Chronicles!
My most hated phrase is after each easy battle, you hear "When's the real battle happening, then?" in that Cockney accent. **shudders**
@GrailUK Yeah I didn't see it either this week. Kinda curious but I'm sure it topped the charts
@Finntendo XC2 takes a while to really click, for me it was the end of chapter 3. I did abandon it on chapter 2 and only revisited months later - after I got to chapter 4 I went forward until beating it
It has in my opinion the most satifying battle system considering XC1 and XC2, but it is horribly explained... so I totally understand you. I had to read online tutorials at some point to understand
On XC3 it seems they're overcorrecting that a bit with a lot of explanation about every tiny detail on the combat...
I've only played a handful of hours but already the voices repeat a LOT. Surprised they didn't just add more lines of dialogue, there aren't that many characters and it wouldn't have been much effort. Doesn't bother me much though, really feeling it so far.
@Friendly Didn't hear anyone complaining every time Ryu went "Hadouken" or "Shoryuken" every 2 seconds. lol
Removed - off-topic
It seems like tradition to have the repeated post battle lines that you hear a million times. Not sure I could accept anything else.
I can't wait to get it and find out for myself. The accents help as well in their memorability as there aren't too many games with an assortment of European or Australian accents. Hopefully battle dialogue is more coherent then as characters tend to talk over each other a lot in 2 and DE to a lesser extent.
@Friendly
Yeah, but that's a short instrumental chime. (And it's awesome.) A line of dialogue sticks out more.
There’s a gay sex innuendo after virtually every battle. I love it.
WE'LL HEAR NEW LINES, WITH THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP
@sevex This is one of the main reasons I play with Japanese voice acting whenever it's an option. These inane quips get intensely annoying after about an hour of play. When they're in Japanese it doesn't bother me nearly as much.
Japanese voice over is the only way I can play the XC games. The repetitive phrases in English drive me up the wall. I don't know how people put up with it for an hour let alone hundreds.
I wish there was an option to turn off field and battle dialogue, but keep the story dialogue too. It's all or nothing unfortunately.
It's actually surprising how much it annoys me. It must tap into something for me personally that doesn't seem to be an issue for others.
The key to a long life, is knowing when to leggit.
Both Xenoblade 1 and 2 had the same issue of lacking variety with the voices during battles and it’s mainly the same ones that get used often before and after a battle starts/ends.
At least with XB2 with the immense party customization you can change things up for the variety quite easily.
It's not voice acting but- Press A to send off.
I was just thinking earlier what quotes would be ‘the’ ones this time round. And unsurprisingly I guessed right. I’m wondering if the variety gets better as you go through or something because it is a little uncharacteristic of Xenoblade to have the post battle quotes them be this level of repetitive.
@GrailUK I just saw the UK charts on Nintendo Everything. Xeno 3 is #1.
@mauhlin12 Man, that's amazing! Y'know, sometimes, I don't feel like I'm in the wrong country. Sometimes.
Yeah, very noticeable. Wasn't there a way to incorporate a RNG into their retorts?
@themightyant or link’s jah, jah, hajaa. And mario’s hoe, hoe, hoehuuuu uuummmmppff
This is why Eunie is my favourite lol. Her language is pretty normal for my lot in the Midlands- aside from the hilarious substitutes for swearing (spark, snuff etc)
