Re: Video: The 26 Best Game Boy Advance Games of All Time

DarkScythe13

Personally I feel that Megaman Battle Network 3 deserves an honourable mention. Same as DBZ Supersonic Warriors (it was legitimately really fun to play with arguably unique style).

I am glad to see both Metroid games come out on top though. Fusion was my first Metroid experience ever. For some reason the presentation helped draw me in while younger where i just didnt have the sense at the time for Metroidvania games like Super Metroid (i.e. the linearity helped as did playing Castlevania Circle of the Moon).

Re: Random: Pokémon Fans Are Losing Their Minds Over Pikachu Talking

DarkScythe13

@Benjamin i think it’s meant to be implied at that point that Marshadow might have already been influencing him. Ash has often been mopey and struggled with loss in the original Kanto anime. His pride was also on the line all the more and it was kind of a huge shake up for him since he was clashing with Cross of all people and losing a battle of ideals shook his beliefs (and then his belief in his own team)

That said, the Pikachu talking part isnt a big deal to me either. First off, there was a strong influence of ‘supernatural’ legendary forces at that moment. Secondly, i cant remember entirely, but I think Ash had already taken quite a beating and was already struggling to maintain consciousness; that coupled with his closer than ever bond (being in sync with his Pokemon), and him probably reading Pikachu’s mouth might have even filled some kind of gap (he has at least worked out relatively quickly what Pikachu has said in some episodes of the anime).

EDIT - Keep in mind that the anime also had an episode with Santa Claus, and in the same episode also had a telepathic Lapras (just because), and other episodes featuring a talking Gastly with insane pyschic abilities (Maidens Peak), and a ghostly psychic Ninetails that also had powers to create vivid illusions (and probably countless other examples) so a miracle moment like this to me feel like less of a big deal.

Re: Review: Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (3DS)

DarkScythe13

Sounds like somewhat of an improvement. That said I hope there is more post-game content. Sun and moon felt like the weakest games in a long time and the first batch of Pokemon games that i took a break from out of disinterest and boredom (due to a combination of elements). Having no National Dex upgrade was absurd.

Re: Movie Review: Pokémon The Movie: I Choose You!

DarkScythe13

There were a lot of (emotional) firsts in the movie I found, and props to many of the choices. As with others though, it was a bit disappointing that Misty and Brock weren’t involved. Felt like more of an excuse to feature Pokemon from other regions more than anything else.

Re: Soapbox: DOOM is the Most Important Switch Game Yet

DarkScythe13

I hope it succeeds for the fact that there is a lot of pressure on the Switch by third party devs, and it feels like one failure would be enough to shake their trust.

Personally though, im giving this a pass. I originally had it on Xbox One and have it on Steam. The game was okay, but I didnt love it enough to want to replay on Switch. But I honestly hope Ultimate Doom and Doom II (though not the BFG version) are released however. Those are games I’d love portable versions of.

Re: Review: The Jackbox Party Pack 4 (Switch eShop)

DarkScythe13

Bought a 15% eShop card for this. I presume it comes out around midnight as it still isn't in the Australian eShop yet...

Honestly though, I'm really anxious to try Survive the Internet. From what I saw in the trailers it sounded very entertaining and quite fun, so I'm a little surprised by what was said in the review about it. Then again I suppose some Jackbox games can be more appealing to some than others.

Re: Niantic CEO on the Near Future of Pokémon GO

DarkScythe13

Honestly Gen 3 is a few months overdue now (well like at least 4 months). I kind of want them to get to Gen 4 already, or at least have the extended evolutions (such as Electivire) in earlier.

Other thing is that I wish they'd just have a proper event (rather than being country or 'area' exclusive) for foreign Pokemon It was an okay idea at first, but without a GTS option, its become a little annoying now.

Re: Review: Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 (Switch)

DarkScythe13

The lower FPS bothered me at first, but i'm used to it now. I'm actually having a lot of fun revisiting this, and it is pretty addicting. Helps that we still have free online access for now, whereas with Xbox One, I had no Gold Membership and couldn't so much as interact passively in-game

Re: Review: Metroid: Samus Returns (3DS)

DarkScythe13

I'm going to voice an unpopular opinion (having completed this over the previous weekend); I would rate this 7/10 (or 7.5 perhaps).I feel there are some great new ideas, and certainly a lot of things are executed rather well. The music is fantastic, and length-wise the game is just right. However there are some important negatives that are glossed over also.

I'll start with the controls. This is one of those Nintendo games (similar to DKC Returns I think) where ONE set of (at times, inconvenient) controls is enforced. I get that the 360-directional aiming was an important feature, but there are times where the D-Pad would have been far more useful (including moments where morph ball is crucial for evasion), especially in some hectic battles were precise movement is more important than aiming. In theory, having so many options on the touch screen is a good idea, but when things become pretty hectic you're expected switch between equipment in a small time frame.

Another point here is the whole 'counter' move. Rather than being an optional technique, it feels like they built the game around it. Even basic enemies feel as though they've had their health increased (when attacked by regular beam shots) from other games, encouraging counter+one shot kill combos (as well as getting more energy back from counters). I actually see this as a negative since it puts too much emphasis on it.

Finally, I feel the enemy variety is a problem in this game. I don't want to spoil 'too much' (so I won't comment much on the bosses). What I will say though is that it feels like there is very little variation between regular enemies. In fact it feels like a lot of the time there are palette swaps of the same 3 or 4 enemies in most areas (a slight exaggeration perhaps though). This may be due to how the GB version was, but honestly it's really disappointing. I actually quite liked how other Metroid games could at times be more unique with certain enemies. Thinking back, there was repetition in other games like Super Metroid (both in functionality and appearance of enemies) but for some reason I noticed it a lot less. It really feels like the same enemies in pretty much every room.

Despite all that, it is still a pretty decent game, it's just that I disagree with it receiving the higher scored reviews that it has. I don't feel it was executed perfectly and the review didn't seem to acknowledge any short comings at all.

Re: Review: Pokkén Tournament DX (Switch)

DarkScythe13

I got it on Wii U but it ended up collecting dust and i traded it in without having used my version. I wanted to like it. It seems like a cool idea. But i just cant get into it and there's no sense forcing that i guess.

Re: Doom Will Bring Hell to Switch This Holiday Season

DarkScythe13

The frame rate will determine my decision on this one. I love the idea of Switch getting more titles, but the power thing means there is usually going to be more limits or compromises than other ports. Id want no less than stable 60fps, and fps>resolution IMO (as priorities go).

Re: Review: Metroid: Samus Returns (3DS)

DarkScythe13

GAH! If ONLY this were Switch! I'd be way more excited. I'm still getting it, but the way I'm feeling, I want to just rush through, utilise EBGames' 7 day return policy, then refund and use the money for something on Switch, and the praying for a "definitive" HD Switch version...

Re: Review: The Jackbox Party Pack (Switch eShop)

DarkScythe13

A great game, but IMO arguably the weakest of the 3 packs. YDKJ is good fun, but it doesnt seem to catch on with most friends. Drawful and Fibbage are good, though Fibbage has a sequel (and will soon have another sequel apparently). A bit of a shame they didnt release Drawful 2 as well on the Switch.

Re: Super Mario Maker Gets A Long-Overdue Update On Wii U

DarkScythe13

I don't see this being ported for the sole fact that the Wii U (with its stylus and touchscreen design) was far better suited to editing. That said, I STILL wish they would release this for Switch. I miss it so much, and it's the one reason that I half regret trading in my Wii U!

Re: Video: Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2's Live Action Trailer Features Fireballs, Enthusiastic Actors

DarkScythe13

@Turbo857 That link you posted mentioned exactly what i stated, though my negative framing of it might have caused some confusion. The game is 60fps for one on one battles, which i presume is strictly one character vs one character (pretty much rare given most battles involve more than one character). For battles involving multiple characters however, apparently it is capped at 30 fps.

I could be wrong in how i interpreted it, and if it so happens that its 30fps in multiplayer only (i.e. Playing the story mode with cpu is at smooth 60fps) then thatd be great...

Re: Video: Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2's Live Action Trailer Features Fireballs, Enthusiastic Actors

DarkScythe13

Considering I already finished the first (and traded it in) on Switch and own Xenoverse 2 + Season Pass, I was not really considering getting this. Hearing that it's not 60fps when not one-on-one also bothers me.

However I really want more games for Switch and while the games were pretty repetitive, I feel like i'll be bored enough to at least use EBGames' 7 day return policy.

Re: Nintendo Download: 24th August (Europe)

DarkScythe13

I'm incredibly lucky! Tonight I randomly decided to re-purchase all the Jackbox games on Switch. I figured i'd only get Packs 2 & 3, given that there was no special 'triple pack' unlike Steam. However, after I purchased Pack 3 and went to check Pack 2, turned out the 20% thing had come into effect in time for me to benefit. I actually ended up getting Pack 1 because of that.

Glad I didn't cave in earlier in the week. A shame Drawful 2 isn't released, but I guess the first Drawful is decent enough from Pack 1 anyway. I also grabbed that "Use Your Words" game, which looks similar enough in style and function to a few jackbox games, and the review on here seemed decent.

Re: Review: Sonic Mania (Switch eShop)

DarkScythe13

Loved the game. Finished it completely with Sonic + Tails, and with Knuckles with all Emeralds (currently about 7 stages in with Tails). Honestly, a few glitches aside, its a fantastic game which clearly had a lot of love invested into it. A couple of thoughts though:

*I recall some people used to complain about Sonic CD level design, particularly that of Stardust Speedway. I think they did a fantastic job of streamlining the gameplay in that level (especially Act 2 anyway).
*The Special Stages took some getting used to. I hated the 5th Emerald with a passion. Could never master that one where all the others didn't take too much to learn.
*While I like the inclusion of Bonus Stages, I almost wish they were a separate Blue Sphere's challenge mode to unlock stuff rather than being actual bonus stages. I feel the lack of proper bonus stages with any real bearing on the playthrough hurts it a bit.
*Kind of wish Super Peel out and Insta-shield were always avaiable. In comparison while the drop dash is useful, it feels awkward to pull off and might have been nice with a different control for it.

Re: Sonic Mania Runs Brilliantly on Switch, With One Tiny Drawback

DarkScythe13

I noticed a long delay on the Home Button, where it ended up responding finally after pressing '+' while in game. That doesn't bother me too much. I had a more annoying glitch in the very final boss though, where the last moment of the battle wasn't playing out (I was stuck with nothing to do), so I had to 'die' and redo the battle, which worked the second time.

@OorWullie - Yeah I noticed the Act 2 Green Hill weird spike thing also. Looks like the camera doesn't move where it's meant to, in order to hide that. It wouldn't so much if there was something underneath them (and maybe that's the solution in a future patch).

Re: Feature: Basking in Nostalgia and '16-Bit' Goodness in Sonic Mania

DarkScythe13

I had a day-in today, and finished both a Sonic+Tails, and a Knuckles playthrough (including all emeralds), as well as getting gold medallions for all Blue Sphere Bonus Stages. I had about 3 annoying glitches that prevented me from progressing (legit glitches, one of which appeared in the very final battle), but those aside, this really is a fantastic Sonic game.

Also I wish to comment on just how annoying the 5th Special stage is specifically (seriously, something about that one is just super frustrating, whereas the 6th and 7th emeralds are easy in comparison!)

A lot of love and care went into making this game, and thankfully the level designs are interesting and well-thought out, definitely surpassing any 2d Sonic game since 3K. Kinda hoping for a sequel or DLC already though, as these redesigns of old stages are just so well done!

Re: Nintendo Download: 10th August (Europe)

DarkScythe13

Well, I assume we'll still be getting Sonic Mania, and that would have been my only vote; nothing for me otherwise.

Very much looking forward to it though. I love the Switch, but it's still lacking in games, especially games that I can fire up again and again. I like Mario Kart 8 DX and Splatoon 2, but they feel predominately like multiplayer games. Classic Sonic games to me are the perfect games to fire up when bored. Their simple and fun nature means they never really get old or feel like any sort of chore to replay.

Re: The Jackbox Party Pack 1 & 2 Hit the Switch on 17th August

DarkScythe13

If I didn't already have them then I would get them all, but I have all 3 + Drawful 2 already on PS4. That said, if these go on sale at some point, then I would be more tempted...

@NintenNinja16 - Depends what you prefer. I prefer (and would therefore personally recommend) Packs 2 and 3. If they decide to release Drawful 2, then I feel Pack 1 is pretty redundant by comparison, as the only remaining worthwhile game IMO is You Don't Know Jack (a classic quirky quiz show game), and while I enjoy it, it tends to be less of a hit with my friends.

Re: Sonic Mania's Competition Mode Brings Back Splitscreen Memories

DarkScythe13

Mixed feelings about the stretched look. It certainly is nostalgia, but it'd be nice if we could choose perspective. Other thing is while I liked the chaos in Sonic 2 from random items, it'd be nice if they added more options...

Edit - Oh I didn't see the part where they mention choosing items. In that case sounds great

Re: Bask in Nostalgia With Sonic Mania Special and Bonus Stage Footage

DarkScythe13

The difference maker for the UFO special stage will be tight controls. Honestly it looks pretty difficult compared with blue spheres. Sure blue spheres gets pretty fast, but it's pretty linear and straight forward which makes the fast speed manageable. Those tight turns look a bit worrying, and the use precise controlling will make all the difference.

Nice to see the blue spheres special stage returning also. Felt the most balanced IMO. As for the last part of the video, I wonder if it automatically sends you back when too slow or if there is a retry button the player manually presses.

Re: Capcom Reveals Ultra Street Fighter II Sales Figures, Is Still "Evaluating" Switch Support

DarkScythe13

I returned USF2 within a week for a full refund at EBGames. IMO it's actually a pretty rubbish version when taking into account the price and the main features that are meant to warrant it. There are no classic bonus stages, way of the hadou or whatever it was called was not fun, and dramatic mode (?) or 2 vs 1 was only like 3 rounds. I'm sure the tightened mechanics are nice but if you strip away all the supposed bells and whistles, the price is absurd.

Honestly, I'd like to see the Switch continue to succeed despite Capcom. While I like many of their past games and like to see them at least support Virtual Console, I don't support their attitude regarding pricing or how half-hearted they're currently acting over the switch.

Re: Deals: Upcoming Nintendo Switch Games And Accessories For August And September

DarkScythe13

The only game on that list that I'm looking to get is Sonic Mania. The convenience and comfort of the switch wins me over, even in the face of achievements/trophies in other versions.

I have Xenoverse 2 on Xbox and already completed the first one. I don't see a point to repurchasing it on Switch. I'm more interested in the new Z fighting game anyway.

... Can't help but really wish for some kind of Mario Maker for Switch announcement.

Re: Sonic Mania's Special Stages Take Inspiration From Sonic CD

DarkScythe13

At least it's not the Sonic 1 special stage which is chaos (and the Sonic 4 one didnt help much). I liked Sonic Cd's though the perspective regarding the UFO's was a bit troublesome at times and their patterns and speed were insane.

That said, I think the Sonic 3K one is the most balanced. Hopefully they inprove it as the Sonic Cd rerelease didnt change things much.

Re: Pokémon GO Fest Endures Problematic Weekend But Legendaries Arrive Globally

DarkScythe13

Honestly the current model for the Legendaries kind of sucks. Should be free raid battles for the duration of the event (unrealistic) OR defeating one should be instant capture. I thought that was going to be the case based on the way the trailer portrayed it.

I'm saying that despite managing to comfortably catch both Legendaries. There are far too many glitches (balls go flying over their head without the utmost gentle throw and it's like that for all flyers it seems), lag wastes the few premier balls you earn, and in some places it's not that easy to join a raid. One friend of mine lives in a rural town where there isn't much opportunity within such an event.

Re: Nintendo Download: 20th July (Europe)

DarkScythe13

I never bought the original Splatoon and only played a small amount of it. I'll buy a physical copy today, though I am disappointed that it's not 2 people per console (no splitscreen).

Does anyone know if standard matches can be played offline with bots at all? Or is it just strictly a single player mode and thats it?

Re: Netflix Renews Castlevania Series For A Second, Longer Season

DarkScythe13

Okay I just watched this and thought it was great. I don't know what the complaints are regarding the swearing; it didn't feel overly forced, nor did it happen as often as what others made it out to be (in fact most of the swearing came from a pub scene with drunks).

The gore at times was a bit excessive. It seems like shows either unnecessarily censor things, or go all out. I suppose it could be worse, but that's the one part i'd probably tweak slightly - but I can live with it and it didn't really detract or affect my enjoyment of it. A shame it had to end when it was really getting good.

Re: The Jackbox Party Pack 1 & 2 Are Coming to Nintendo Switch

DarkScythe13

I own all these (+Drawful 2) on PS4. That said it would be tempting to buy Packs 2 and 3 (not 1), as it would be much easier to bring it to various friends places. The 'games' within are fantastic. and whenever I introduce various friends to it, it always ends up making for a great night.

The reason I would skip over Pack 1 however is that I feel YDKJ and Drawful are the only worthwhile games on it; in the case of Drawful, I'd prefer to buy a re-release of Drawful 2 instead, and YDKJ isn't worth it on its own (and the other games on Packs 2 and 3 are superior party games anyway).
