Splatoon 2 has been serving up weekly updates and/or events so far, and that's set to continue this week. The coming weekend will bring us one of the quirkiest new items in the Switch sequel - the Splat Brella.
It's the first of its type in the game, and the Japanese account's tweet has a few nice shots of the weapon(?) in action.
Going by when new items are typically unlocked, we expect this one to go live early/late evening today (11th August) in North America, and in the early hours of the morning (12th August) in Europe.
We're looking forward to a weekend of Splatoon 2 x Singin' in the Rain.

@Dev
In anticipation for precipitation stack chips for the rainy day.
Been wondering when we'd get it. Hope we'll see a 9th stage added by August's end.
Sweet ive been waiting for this
I just got to the single player level with this the other day. It seemed pretty fun to play as, and it's described as a shotgun, so I think I'll give it a proper try in regular battle.
This gonna be popular with the cosplayers
The Dualie will easily counter the 'brella. I know because I use the Dualies a lot.
To ask a basic question, can it be opened to deflect incoming fire from the Zapper, Aerosprayer, Dualies, etc.?
So, the subweapon is the Sprinkler. Does that mean the Special will be Ink Storm?
How about some new stages and upping the tickrate Nintendo?
Damn that new weapon is Kingsman Secret Service all over!
@chewytapeworm
Hahaha, I was about to say something similar, but you beat me to it.
@MetaRyan Yeah, the special is an Ink Storm.
I'm surprised this weapon is being released so early. I thought they may save it for a big 2.0 update. I'm pretty happy about this simply because it's a new weapon and not a re-skin like I thought it would be.
@Yasaal By the design of the brella - it's not looking to be easily counterable by the Dualies. I should know - I use the Dualies too. I'd say the best counter for this weapon is the Blaster group as they'd be able to hit the inkling behind the shield. The range of which Blaster would effect how good of a counter each will be, but the longest ranged one's look like they'll have an inevitable advantage.
The dodge rolls on Dualies are nulled by how easily the shield can be moved around.
@bluedogrulez Yes, it can. You can try it out on Hero Mode campaign as one of the many weapons to use. The Shield itself didn't seem to have any actual exploitable weaknesses - save for how long it stays open (forcing you to shoot it and thus lose the defence aspect).
Also - Rain Drops Keep Falling on My Head~ ;D
and Umbrella- ella-ella-eh-eh-eh~
Still no match for my slosher!
@ThatNyteDaez and the buckets! They'll toss right over the brella
@Dev me to!
I really need to play the single player mode! I have yet to play the single player mode even once.
@dkxcalibur dude it's the first thing I do lol
@dkxcalibur
Same, I played it once for an hour or so. Salmon Run and the other modes are just so darn addicting.
I made the mistake of beating the entire single player campaign with this thinking it would unlock it. Nope. Nothing. I guesd this weekend will change that.
I thought it might come this weekend. Definitely going to give it a spin, I've wanted it since they first unveiled it.
I really need this coming into work this morning, because I'm soaked!
I'm almost done with the splat brella in story mode, so I'll be ready to show it off when this actually drops!
@ThatNyteDaez I don't know, I think the dualies (and any rapid shooter but not as much) will handle the brella just fine but definitely not counter. As long as you keep shooting(in bursts depending on ink consumption) and strafing they'll have to drop the shield to shoot eventually or the shield will just pop off and they'll be wide open. You can't turn super fast so the dualies can just jump behind your defenses if done correctly. That all being easier said than done.
I think sloshers will have an advantage over the brella, but not to the extent of blasters.
I think the brella will be best for approaching chargers that can be reached.
@Dev me too buddy
I wonder with the sp is going to be... I swear if it's the splashdown or the tera missiles again!?
@Whopper744 I did the same thing.
Less weapons, more maps please.
From some people's comments, the Brella sounds like an indestructible shield. Just saying, if it takes too much damage, it disappears, and takes a while to come back.
@Gen0neD More weapons as well. I am sick of soo many people using the Aerospray MG.
@Dev Is this the only way your get to use it? I haven't even finished level 2......straight to multiplayer.
I keep looking at this and thinking of Kingsmen. "Manners maketh man..." locks door
I forsee this being a pain in Rainmaker on certain stages like Humpback Pumptrack.
@JarJarBlacks Currently it is the only way to be able to try one, but unlike the other weapons in single player (where completing every stage with one unlocks the hero variant) you do not receive the hero variant yet. Presumably that will be rectified once the normal version comes out.
I've put in 60 hours already and I just started playing the single player mode. If I would have known the splat brella was a usable weapon I would have played a lot more. I've been really looking forward to this weapon since they first revealed it in the direct I believe. This was the first night since it's release that I wasn't planning on playing since football is back finally and my 49ers are taking the field for the first time under a new regime....but I'm just gonna have to play a little now this just looks incredibly fun and I can't wait to try it.
I also beat 1p with the Brella. Can't wait to unlock the Hero Brella finally!
Next week we really need a stage. 80 hours of playing and it's growing stale.
@ThatNyteDaez Crap. 'Nuff said XD
So you only unlock it by leveling and then purchasing it right? Darn, I just hit level 17 last night and now have a whole level to go before I can purchase it. I guess I'll be doing some turf war tonight...
Cleared all of the hero brella stages for this. Kind of dissapointing completionists couldn't get an early brella for multiplayer but I suppose it makes sense.
I didn't like the way he got things done.
These weapons get crazier by the second! I came up with a weapon called the Splasso. It's like a tube full of ink you whirl around and it inks circles around you.
@Nico07 No, I am Level 9 and I could buy it right away.
Does anyone know if using Amiibo in Splatoon 2 gives you more experience points after battling?
@wazlon: I haven't heard anything about Amiibo giving more experience. Crusty Sean has tickets that do, however. They can be gotten from the 1p mode or Salmon Run.
@Whopper744 Wait...I just did that. So then what did it do?
