It's fair to say that Sonic Mania has been really well received so far, attracting positive reviews all over the shop. Our own review will be with you shortly (spoilers: we like it too!). For many Sonic fans this is the game they've always wanted Sega to make -- a spiritual successor to the original Mega Drive trilogy. With the help of enthusiast Christian Whitehead, Sega seem to have a hit on their hands.
Since it's launch on the Switch eShop yesterday, Sonic Mania has jumped to the top spot on the Best Sellers chart in most regions. In the UK and the US it has even managed to overthrow the mighty Overcooked: Special Edition and Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition which have been dominating the charts for a while now.

It's out? How did I miss that?
Still waiting for mine to be shipped from US, but oh look you can get the collectors edition from amazon.co.uk now that its out:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sonic-Mania-Collectors-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B072PZPG9G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1502878010&sr=8-1&keywords=sonic+mania+switch
(If anyone missed out)
Damn i'm annoyed now, why didn't they let you pre-order it on the UK site? I can't even cancel my order as they have now shipped it, probably bobbing along across the atlantic right now
inb4 some smartarse reminds us Sonic '06 was a platinum seller.
Only played Green Hill Zone so far but it was a blast. I listened to the Chemical Plant Zone music for a while and it is just as I remember it. I will probably complete my first play through by tomorrow and get cracking on a Knuckles playthrough.
It's a good Sonic game, do you have any idea how many people have been waiting for that for so long? Sonic fans are rivaled by almost no one in their brand loyalty, especially when you consider how many failures and so-so titles Sonic has had over the last 10-15 years.
Top of the UK and US charts but fairly low down in the Japanese for some reason.
First Persona 5 and now Sonic Mania? Can Sega do no wrong this year?
Sonic Forces coming soon
...oh right. Wait and see I guess...
Good for Sonic but where does Troll and I feature on the chart?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Stop trolling! 😉
Deserving. Great game.
Awesome!
Will download just as soon as I have an Internet connection. I just moved to college and currently have no idea how to connect my Switch to the campus Wi-fi. If course, I've been pretty busy with classes, so I haven't had much of a window to get it done.
Just had the game crash on me during Press Garden Act 2.I found a secret bit then a message popped up saying the "software is not responding and will close now". Now I have to start from Act 1 again. That;s not good.
That's dope! I was gonna pick this up for PC actually, shame it releases a whole 15 days after its release for the consoles. ☹️
@OorWullie had a similar issue happen with me too.
Found secret bit that had a fire shield, smashed through some ice and then got that message.
@tyepye That's the same part I was at.Can't be coincidence.
By the time I get it( in a couple of weeks ), all the bugs will be gone, but it's getting harder to wait lol
It's a great game, really hope Sega gives Christian Whitehead the reigns for a sequel at some point.
@OorWullie yeah can't be coincidence, hopefully it will get patched. In the meantime guess I'll try and avoid that area/the fire shield/something else about that bit of the game!
@Cartune I had this preordered on Steam but when it got delayed, I cancelled that purchase and bought it on Switch instead.
Cool
I played through the first zone last night after work. The graphics, sounds and animations are brilliantly done. I've encountered both special zones. It's a great tribute to the Megadrive games.
Loving the game so far, and the statue is gorgeous. I couldn't stop chuckling out loud with satisfaction as I kept playing. It really is a home run.
Very pleased.
@Not_Soos If your university uses eduroam I don't think you can connect, but you should be able to connect to guest wifi. May also be a good idea to invest in an Ethernet adaptor that plugs into the dock's USB port. I got one on Amazon for pretty cheap, works great.
Loving it. On stardust speedway right. Love the throwbacks to the series. Like the bean machine boss was pretty cool
Am I the only one messing up the sphere bonus stages by hitting easily avoidable red spheres cause of twitchy fingers and changing spheres into rings at the wrong time?
I'm waiting for your review of the game because I'm quite wary of anything Sonic games. You can guess why. I'll definitely get the game if you review it well though.
@OorWullie Thats where it happened for me as well...
Last night I beat the toughest boss yet, the Oil Ocean boss. Very hard compared to the original Robotnic boss. Took me quite a few tries but eventually found a decent strategy to win.
I've always been sure it was going to reach first place since the very first day!
@OorWullie I had the same message just after killing the first act boss on chemical plant zone. I hope these little bugs get patched soon.
The only Sonic game I've ever played was the original (or second one?) on the Megadrive a thousand years ago, and I don't remember it leaving a lasting impression... I might need to give it a try again.
Happy to see a Sonic title reaching success both in sales and in ratings. Hopefully they release a physical copy in some form. It would be awesome if Sonic Forces turned out to be really good too, but early impressions seem disappointing.
@liljmoore I'm sure you aren't. Hey, even I mess up sometimes when the speed gets kicked up high, and I have 23 years' experience playing Blue Spheres.
@Bunkerneath you were able to pre-order the collectors edition via Amazon UK a few months back, mine arrived yesterday. Guessing that you had to be quick off the mark as they only had so many for the initial shipment and maybe some got cancelled/they made more in the meantime.
@dorkeybubblehead I kept on looking out but must of missed it, thats why i ordered it from the US site, but even though it's delayed, i've actually saved £ 10 even with delivery charge
It's an easy buy at $20, I couldn't be happier. Boy is it dragging me through the ringer though
I'm trying to finish Sonic 3 & Knuckles before I play Mania since I'm new to this series (finished 1 and 2 already). I did boot it up for a moment to try it, and I was having a ton of fun. The drop dash is really satisfying to use.
Awesome, go Sonic!
Will there be a physical retail copy available in the United States?
@Blue_Blur: You're a chart-topper!
Best 2D platform I played in ages and I play a lot of them.
Loving it!
A friend of mine wants a physical copy, but I don't know if one will come soon (if at all). He may be biting the bullet and downloading this. Anyone heard any word of a physical release?
I was just thinking...could this be the first year where Mario, Sonic, AND Zelda are Game of the Year contenders???!
@Biff_ARMStrong I'm currently a little stuck at that boss. The worst is that when you die you have to replay both acts again, and they are quite long. Still, I know it's just a matter of trying again, and that's kinda the fun part to figure out, so I'll keep at it.
@nab1 Good luck! just try and keep your distance from it. Being reckless will get you killed quickly since it's hard to gather your coins after you get hit
That's good. I'm sure this game will sell well on PC and all current gen consoles. Everybody wins with this game.
Yep! I saw that last night and I'm pretty pleased to see fellow Ninty players buying Mania cause it deserves it.
Last night I also realize that you can order the games by sales data on the search filter on eshop. Unsurprisinly the last game on the list sales wise is Vroom in the Night sky. Lol!
"Third party games never sell well on Nintendo consoles."
Good to see. I want to see this style be a success, to show that you can still have classic games, with modern advancements, and that there is a demand and appreciation for them.
Meh. Vroom in the night sky and Troll and I were way better than Sonic Mania.
Jk.
No seriously I was just joking...
@Not_Soos I see someone posted sort of a solution but I know something that doesn't cost money (and what I did myself)
For some reason my Switch can't connect to my WiFi in my bedroom but my laptop with Windows 10 does. So what I did, and what you could do if you have a laptop/pc that supports it, is make the W10 device a Hotspot.
So the Switch connected to the laptop, the laptop connected to the Internet and it works. For downloading a game that's less than 200mb that's totally fine.
With this one and the SFII remake, it looks like Switch is primed to be the pinnacle of 16-bit retro glory. Makes sense, since Switch has always been pretty well positioned to target the nostalgia demographic. I do wonder how long before the system gets a real virtual console though. Seems like a lot of money left on the table.
I strongly suspect they are sitting on a virtual console until they think it's necessary to gin up renewed interest in the system. Since it's still really tough to find one in the wild, I suspect their main focus is getting stock on the shelves.
