Re: Review: LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy (GameCube)

It's disappointing to see a review that doesn't even touch upon the collect-a-thon aspect of the game considering it IS the main gameplay feature and the game's strongest point. Strip that aspect away, and you're left with a really barebones experience.

I honestly don't get where the reviewer is coming from by comparing freeplay mode with a Shoot 'em up. It's simply a mode where you can use every character freely.

More stuff to choose from is never a bad thing.
Though I don't get why Nintendo won't just update the VC library more actively.
Those games are pretty much already made, you just need to add save-and-restore point support and the like. Plus they also have existing fanbases thanks to being as old as they are. Then again, maybe I'm just bitter that I can't play GBA titles on my 3DS.

The song of double time now skips ahead on a per-hour basis rather than from day to night? Seems my one gripe with the game has now been fixed!

As for the game in general, Majora's Mask has the honor of having the best realized world of any Zelda game.
The way NPCs go about their varied daily routines and actually change dialogue depending on the time you talk to them was mindblowing for the era the game was made in (no doubt made possible with the extra RAM cart). Using this feature as an opportunity to change the focus away from dungeon-raiding and putting it on helping people with their daily problems was pretty much the best thing Nintendo could've done with the game. I really applaud Nintendo for doing something radically different from the extremely well-received OOT when simply building upon that game seemed like the much safer alternative.

@Frank90
I see. That's good. I was really getting worried that you guys were really left with barely any way to play the games you want to enjoy.
This eye-opener certainly makes me see Europe's somewhat sluggish games market compared to the US's in a very different light. Gotta be thankful for what we do have I suppose. Plus at least we Europeans can freely import stuff so long as shipping options are a bit leenient.

The only real problems I have with the game are the rather drab color-palette (which is understandable considering the fanbase backlash Wind Waker got) that I think really undersells how good the game actually looks and that it can sometimes feel a bit empty.
Aside from that, the game has top-notch dungeon designs,
the best combat in the entire series,
an above average storyline with plenty of intrigue
and an awesome musical score.

Personally, I find that the game got MUCH better later on thanks to the many fun and practical upgrades. Playing the game on hard from beginning to end also gave me a much more positive impression compared to my first playthrough years ago, as weaving and dodging around your enemies is exciting and works very well. As a character-action enthusiast,
I was very much pleased with this game.
