It's no secret that many of the amiibo figurines already revealed will work across a range of compatible software titles, and now a recently-discovered Wal-Mart promotional display has shed some light on which are set for use in Mario Kart 8.
Nintendo Force editor Lucas Thomas managed to grab a picture detailing a list of four amiibo that have been confirmed as compatible with the hugely popular title, including Mario, Yoshi, Princess Peach, and Donkey Kong. It's a fairly unsurprising line-up, but it's interesting to note that Link is currently absent from the selection, despite featuring as a playable racer in the upcoming DLC pack.
Three of the four, excluding Donkey Kong, will also work with the upcoming Mario Party 10, while the Yoshi amiibo will be able to carry over into Yoshi's Wooly World as well, meaning that the green dino is compatible with an impressive four titles in total so far.
Yet another image from the display even hints at possible amiibo representation from the Animal Crossing and Pikmin series in the future, with some shadowy versions of what could be Tom Nook and those lovable little veggies.

As not all of the initial Smash Bros. amiibo range has yet been revealed, it's likely that such displays are offering just a glimpse at some of the options available. We'd be surprised if our beloved Luigi figurine wasn't able to hop from the battlefield and into a kart as well, so let us know in a comment below what characters you'd like to see in amiibo form!
Thanks to Benson for the tip!

Animal Crossing features could work with New Leaf. No one said they are compatible with all games between the platforms
First of all I want to say that the Halloween theme you got going is pretty clever
I guess this practically confirms that the majority of the Smash amiibos will not be compatible with any other games...
Those gaps in the graphic are very suspicious, specially the one before Link for HW. Others like Luigi are not there for being part of the second batch.
So you're basically getting a better deal if you buy a figure from a series Nintendo cares about?
It's a shame those awesome Captain Falcon, Ness, Pit etc. figures will be left collecting dust down the line.
Edit: It's also interesting how Nintendo are still advertising the pre-production, high quality Amiibo figures. Because there's nothing misleading about that.
Villager and Link should really be MK8 compatible.
@sinalefa There is nothing suspicious, the characters have fixed positions, just compare the first row with the others.
Have we heard anything on how Amiibo is going to work on Hyrule Warriors? Was hoping it'll be similar to how Smash is handling them.
Was hoping Link would work with Mario kart for the dlc...
Quick question: Will individual amiibos be able to store data for different games? If I have a level 45 Mario on Smash, can I have a level 10 Mario on Kart?
Mario (Mario Kart), Link (Hyrule Warriors) and Samus (Smash Bros.) will be first. I don't know if I'll buy anyone else.
@thom1414 Wait Until you try it yourself. How in the world would anybody know if it is not even out yet? Think next time.
Depending on how amiibos work in MK8, this may change my decision of which one to buy.
That Twiiter screen seems to represent the games for this gen, whether it already out or coming. The Link one might be for Zelda U, Mario for... Idk, Bowser for Sticker Star, and I really feel a hinting of a future Animal Crossing.
Samus Zero amiibo = infinite moneys
Yeah I'm gonna buy Yoshi then just based on the number of compatible games he has. Feels kinda cheap that some figures such as Captain Falcon () will get much less use in comparison.
@LichiRichi I know it sounds a little dimb, but I would love to see the Wii Fit Trainer figure compatible with Wii Fit U
Even if it's just for minor details, i'd like to see more compatibility with all amiibo figures. Like, extra karts in MK8 or something.
I'd definitely get the pikmin one! I had only planned to get Samus for smash but now I may get Yoshi as well.
We're getting that Tom Nook for Animal Crossing Wii U, of course!
I'm going to be so addicted to that game. Oh my goodness.
Long-hair Peach as a costume in MK8 maybe?
Thats a pretty cool set up on walmart's part.
Well they can't be expecting to sell a lot of these if most of them only work in 1 game, guess that's why they haven't been pushing them all that hard. Saying that they are better than Skylanders and Disney Infinity figures b/c amiibo work across a whole range of games isn't very good when that only holds for several of the amiibo, and 1st gen Skylanders work across 4 games now.
Good to see them advertised though as the person above me said.
kudos on the Nintendo Death motif
If they learn from how you play in mario kart like they do in smash, I look forward to my Donkey Kong amiibo becoming the new shell sponge during races.
I wonder if Link isn't listed as compatible for MK8 because he is DLC. They might be avoiding advertising him for MK8 because you have to pay to get him
@whiffy5 Perhaps we could see different games affecting each other? On wii fit u you have an out of shape, overweight wii fit trainer, and the more you use your amiibo on different games the fitter it becomes. Reward could be fit cash I guess.
Hope to see a Palutena one in the third wave.
G&W, Shulk, & Duck Hunt amiibos plz
@Joruus_Cbaoth For all he knew, cross-compatability between games for single Amiibos could've been confirmed on a Nintendo Direct or otherwise.
No need to be so condescending towards a simple question.
Just Gimme my Link and Zelda amiibo's and we will be all good.
The Yoshi amiibo wins.
Surprised the Zelda one doesn't work on Hyrule Warriors
I don't care which ones are compatible with what games. I want to know what they do in these games. That will determine if they are even worth getting. With how crap they are in Smash I still don't see a reason to get one.
I think kirby and olimar would make good characters in Mario kart 8.
I need a Zero Suit Samus for Smash!
@thom1414
What I've understand from the E3 interview back on June: Smash amiibos will use its data/storage most on Smash. On other games, it will just read that it's an amiibo of a certain character and will just unlock some features in the game but it will not utilize much the data on the amiibo. There will be game-specific amiibos beside Smash amiibos. Like maybe: Captain Toad amiibo, or who knows Mario Kart 8 amiibos.
Ooo, where's my bowser amiibo? He's so awesome. I want a bowser amiibo.
Can't wait to have a custom Mario and Link amiibo fight along side my Mii fighter!
Lack of Link and Villager for Mario Kart 8 is odd though.
I think I'll get a yoshi.
Just give me Wario.
If the be all and end all of Amiibo is 'allows you to store what kart, wheels, and glider you use for Mario', my interest has dropped significantly.
Will now most likely pick a few as my favorite character statues, but that's all.
i want the pikmin one
@brandonbwii Lack of Link, yes but Villager isn't coming to Mario Kart 8 until May 2015. By then the game will have probably had at least 2-3 more patches.
@MrGawain I doubt it'll be like that for Mario Kart 8 support because the update back in August already does this.
@MrGawain
Data on Smash amiibos will be utilize most by Smash Bros. MK8 will just use a chunk of the data on Smash amiibos according to the interview last E3. It could be just to unlock some costumes in MK8. But It is possible for Nintendo to release MK8-centric amiibos if they are going to add more features into MK8. Who knows if they will make some changes on how it'll work .
I will get a link one, my main character in smash, can use him in HW, and im sure he will be usable in MK once the dlc comes out
There are gonna be more than enough games for Amiibo compatibility. Hyrule Warriors and Zelda U for example will probably both be compatible with Link and Zelda. There are a lot of Mario games (NSMBU, SM3DW, Mario Party 10, MK8), so the Mario characters are already accounted for.
Aww, no Smash characters in MK8. Expected of course, though. Would've loved to have my Kirby amiibo stretch across games though, hehe
I really wonder what the Amiibos will do on MK8 and Mario Party 10, though. Definitely considering the Yoshi amiibo even more now, as it seems it works with a whopping total of four games (and, with how high tier people are using Yoshi, he's pretty good to train against for the sake of online). I imagine Villager, Link, and Weeg (and Diddy? please Diddy...) should work with MK8 and Zelda with HW as it seems this screen only includes Wave 1.
Preordered all figures but please just give me a game like skylanders in a Nintendo world. That's what everyone wants really
Is this essentially confirmation that these amiibo characters will be getting a future game?
Looks like for now, just DK serves any purpose for me. Fox and Kirby may be worth it depending on if they work on their upcoming Wii U games. (Think about how awesome it would be to race as them in MK8, though! Such a missed opportunity.) I might just get Fox regardless of if I have any use for him or not, though!
I have a strange feeling that this whole Amiibo concept will end up being just a fad.
I guess my hopes for unlockable characters/outfits in MK8 (using amiibo) have been crushed.
The bowser one looks like it's from a paper mario game.
@Cooligan It's actually from a design on a shirt that's being sold on the online Nintendo UK store. I think the art itself originally comes from Yoshi's Island DS though, judging by the style...
Looking at this, I think I've decided on getting the Donkey Kong amiibo. If I had to get a second one, I'd probably go with Link.
Luigi not compatible with MK8? Say what?
I don't like the implication of a Tom Nook figure, since that means non-playable figures can get included in amiibo, as well. That could easily break the range of possibilities, considering how many NPC's exist in Animal Crossing alone.
@Inkling Unlockable Characters would go against Nintendo's intentions with amiibo: no content is linked to the possession of an amiibo. Though I'm not entirely sure if costumes and/or palette swaps should be acounted, since that's purely cosmetical...
@ReBirFh
I see you are right. I thought the Amiibo were put in order of importance according to their game, so who would be before Link in HW?
Cool, that's 2 games I'll have that are compatible with Mario figure. I'm going to get SSB4 amiibo edition, and I already have MK8.
Im sure my comment wont be read waaaay down here, but I think you guys are undermining the masters at work! this is the first wave of Amiibos, so many more to come and yes, I'm sure they are working on updates to all the games! If theirs a Pikmin Amiibo, im sure the reason it wasn't released at launch was because they haven't worked out the kinks in the Pikmin 3 Amiibo update yet!! I also think each wave of Amiibo Releases will give each game an Amiibo update! How could you not do this with titles like Mario kart and Mario party who contain tons of different Nintendo characters. With Nintendo all you need is a little patience and give some support and you'll be enjoying what they offer! I am sure Hyrule warriors will get Zelda at some point right?
Whoah, This is new for me, but i can't buy 1 amiibo and then just use that for all my games? My only interest in Amiibo's comes from the fact that they add some sort of extra gameplay. Not interested anymore.
What the heck!? Why is DK excluded from Mario Party 10? I loved using him as a playable character in the first 3 Mario Party games. Hated when they stopped including him as a playable character.
A second samus amiibo? Dark samus maybe? New metroid?
@BooJoh Yeah I was thinking the same thing with Link now being DLC
If only three are compatible with MK8, that would be a disaster for sales, they need to make all of them work with mk8 and make it where a new character and cart appear when linked with an amiibo ... Would rake in the $$$!
@LiqwidmuD Exactly. All you need is a little patience when it comes to Nintendo and they'll set things right for you.
Pikmin Amiibo? Genius... Surely that will mean an update for Pikmin 3 Amiibo support.
For me, these things are worth buying just for the collectors value on the shelf. The fact that each and every last one of them works in Smash Brothers is enough to sell me on them several times over. Any ADDITIONAL games they work in? Shoot... that's all just bonus right there.
Just saw the display put up in the Walmart I work at today. Didn't have time to watch the video though. But the five they did have in the display case (Yoshi, Peach, Mario, Pikachu, and Link) looked great!
So I guess my Pikachu and Fox Amiibo's I am getting will be more or less useless. Sure Pikachu might have a few more games, but Fox... Star Fox Wii U is coming, I know, but that will be it.
Everyone! Get a Mario amiibo. It should be worthy.
@Kaze_Memaryu
Sooo you don't think that Bowser Jr and Diddy Kong amiibo's are going to unlock the respective characters in MK8...
Seems painfully logical.
@AJWolfTill It sure does, since Nintendo explicitly wants to eliminate this possibility in conjunction with amiibo. No new content, just new features.
@BooJoh Link is compatible. It's been confirmed. http://www.zeldadungeon.net/2014/11/link-amiibo-compatible-with-mario-kart-8/
Villager should be MK8 and possibly New Leaf, seeing as Tom Nook will be an amiibo. Or maybe a new Wii U Animal Crossing game?
