Fans of Japanese culture, including games and TV, are sure to be familiar with Dragon Ball Z, a franchise that's been relatively common on Nintendo hardware since the days of the original Famicom. Though not all modern entries make it to Nintendo systems there's still decent support, particularly in the handheld space.
Fans of the brand and 2D fighting games may have another title for their wishlist, then, with Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Budoten heading to the 3DS in Japan this Summer. Announced in V Jump magazine, it's said to feature over 100 characters in individual and team battles, with drama set to be delivered in "Ultimate Arts" finishing moves and "Z Assist" moves through some characters.
You can see a scan below.
In concept it seems in line with DS title Dragon Ball Kai: Ultimate Butoden; unfortunately that brawler never made it out of Japan.
Are you a Dragon Ball Z fan hoping to see this in the West?

@marnelljm well, the butoden series was a decent series back in the snes days. At least that's what I've heard about on YouTube. If anything, the handheld fighters, while not as superb as the budokai series, was always runner up as best dba fighters
I'm how this works but the title says "budoten" instead of "butoden"
I'm just impressed they are still making fighting games. They haven't tried to make an actual DB game with some form of adventure elements in years
I wonder if we will actualy get this one this time
I wonder if we will actualy get this one this time
I want this
Haven't seen a 2D DBZ fighter in quite a while....
The last Japanese-only game for Nintendo DS was superb, it was Dragon Ball Kai Ultimate Butouden. Lots of characters and great graphics! It had amazing gameplay, too, really challenging and fun at hard stages.
Good thing the DS was region-free, so I was able to wrap my hands on one copy. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about the 3DS. Come on, Nintendo, publish this in the west.
Edit: Oh, and Dragon Ball Kai Ultimate Butouden was a 2D fighter. You may see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HL35Dyjc40s
Localize this
...Where's my Sailormoon game? I may give this a shot for the fact that it is a fighter...and I can't resist fighters.
I just want another Budokai game. I don't care what system. I'd even buy a Vita for it. Hopefully with Dimps back in the DBZ saddle, one won't be too far off.
I've only played the SNES and the PlayStation DB games. I remember putting 100+ hours on the SNES 2D one while the PS 3D transition sucked.
Anyway, after playing with Smash Bros on my 1 day old N3DS, I don't think I'll ever buy another fighting game on N3DS let alone without DPad support for movement.
Might want to mention that Arc System Works are the guys behind this Butouden revival. It's sure to make the fighting game enthusiasts around here pay attention.
@CrimsonMoonMist Heck yeah that grabbed my attention! I haven't been able to put down Guilty Gear Xrd for a while now (well, I was able to for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and Majora's Mask..), so hearing that has my interest!
@DatFunkySmell
I dunno, Xenoverse looks to be shaping up well. Dimps is the one behind that. But yeah, +1 for Budokai series.
This sounds like the spiritual successor to the SuperSonic Warriors series. Also 3DS first to get a DB fighting game.
Hope this one makes it west, i was looking for a 3ds dragonball game, I'll definitely grab this one
Yes! I have been wanting a DBZ fighting game on the 3DS for years! I'm pretty sure it will come over, its a fighting game and Dragonball is still pretty popular in the US and other parts of the world.
Plus, depending on the timing, the game might come out around the time the Buu Saga of Kai starts on TV in the US and maybe Revival of F arrives here as well.
Although, I really hope some fighters from the first Dragonball like Demon King Piccolo make the cut this times.
Does anyone know, would this likely have online multiplayer? I'm looking for another online fighter for the 3DS besides Smash and Dead or Alive.
Hmm... I'm not a huge fan of the DBZ fighting games (I would prefer they made more games based on the pre-Z era), but this looks like they're at least making a decent effort with the team battles and assists. To to mention that Arc System Works is not only skiller in the art of the 2D fighter (BlazBlue, Guilty Gear, Persona 4 Arena, etc) but also were the folks behind the Supersonic Warriors games back in 2004 and 2005, which were a mark above the typical GBA/DS fighters.
I might get this if reception is decent and the character roster is to my liking. I already like the universe and many of the characters of DBZ, so all they need to do is convince me that there is enough content of a decent quality to warrant a purchase.
If I get this, I will likely play as Yamcha whenever possible. I like Yamcha.
Please I want too a Budokai Tenkaichi 4 with wiimote/nunchuk controllers. It is the best way to play them.
The Super Sonic Warriors DS game was excellent. If this is anything like that, bring it westward please. Insta-buy for me.
Looks like a decent DBZ fighter, hopefully it plays as good as Budokai or the classic Butoden or Hyper Dimension games. If it plays anything like Taiketsu and Ultimate Battle 22 then it's an automatic failure in my book, screenshots could be deceiving too so I hope it's doesn't.
@Salnax Nice to see a Yamcha fan! For my part, I would probally make Tien one of the main characters that I use in this game. I played as Tien alot in Budokai 3, and he's always been one of my favorite characters in the overall series.
Granted, he never gets the cool transformations or the ability to really fight the stronger opponents, but he did get a chance to do some cool stuff against Cell and even Super Buu, which is more then most of the non-Sayians ever got.
Oh please ! Let it be localised !!!
Havent actually played any DBZ games, but were there even 100 people that fought over the course of the manga? I mean, excluding those random people from original DB, I don't think there were more than like 10 new characters per arc.
Nintendo, you really need to remove that region lock.
Pretty awesome. It looks something like MUGEN, only thing this looks better in terms of 2D character art. I’ll honestly admit when I heard the 3DS got a few PS2 remakes, I started thinking about how awesome it would be if a 3D game like Dragonballz Budokai Tenkaichi was created for the 3DS. Most likely won’t happen, but I keep wondering how a game like that would perform on the 3DS hardware or even the New 3DS hardware. I've heard the 3DS has better graphically performance so I assume it wouldn't be too difficult.
@Caryslan Tien is pretty awesome, especially in his debut at Goku's second Tournament. His "Antagonist becomes Good Guy" arc was probably the best in the series (I lost count of these by the Cell Saga), and he had a really great dynamic with Roshi at that point and in the King Piccolo arc. I really liked how Roshi was think forward even at this comedic point in the series, helping Tien reform himself and become part of a larger legacy.
I guess I like Yamcha because I started with Dragon Ball, so I was introduced to Yamcha as a Badass Bandit who rivaled Goku as a fighter but could still be the butt of jokes. By the time Yamcha started becoming less impressive (that bit with the Fortune Teller), I was already fond of his style and personality. Not to mention that despite being way out of his league, Yamcha kept on helping however he could, even directly helping to beat Super Cell.
I would have liked it if Dragon Ball split into two series at some point, with DBZ having larger scale fights starring Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, etc, while another smaller series could tell smaller stories about less powerful characters in the early Dragon Ball style. That would have given the great characters who can't quite destroy worlds a place to shine. This probably would have killed Toriyama though, and I do like his artwork in Dragon Quest, so maybe this is for the best.
USA! USA! USA! Hoooooooo
>tfw when a Dragon Ball Z game doesn't get localize
Well, there are currently only two 3DS games I'm looking forward to at the moment, so I'd be pleased if this game were to come out worldwide. I do tend to enjoy my Dragon Ball games, I had a good time with Supersonic Warriors, and it's been a while since I've played one (I believe the last one I played was Revenge of King Piccolo for the Wii).
@Salnax I'd love to see more pre-Z era Dragon Ball games made as well. Dragon Ball: Advance Adventures happens to be my favourite GBA game, and certainly one of my top 20 favourite games of all time.
Thinking about it, there have been plenty of DBZ fighting games, but I don't know of any pre-Z Dragon Ball fighting games. That's kind of odd given that the original series had more of a focus on CQC martial arts techniques and the World Martial Arts Tournament.
@DarkEdi Agreed. Although I've only played small samples and demo's of the DBZ fighting games following Budokai Tenkaichi 3, I do feel they did not play as well as BT 2 and 3. Using the Wii controls were pretty awesome in those games, was always my go to method of playing those games.
Hope this makes it over.
@marnelljm Don't agree Legacy of Goku games were quality plus the GBA and ds DB games were good to.
With Arc System Works working on this km very excited. I was just arguing with someone that the SNES games of this series were great and he said the series was accepted as awful since it never got an entry again. HAH! TAKE THAT!
This HAS to get localized. I need it so bad.
Ooh! I'd love for this to come Stateside.
@Kasplat That 100 will include all transformations and fusions as seperate characters, so reaching the number isn't that hard.
This sounds promising, at least more than any of the recent console DB titles.
i see, beerus, yamu, devil man & chilled. The roster will be good at least
@CrimsonMoonMist awesome! Great to hear arc system works is doing this!
This will definitely be a play asia preorder! the more new fighting games for my 3ds the better!! I've been playing a ton of the one piece fighting game, but this game seems to be more my speed, especially with arc system works behind the wheel!
I could really use a DBZ game. They are one of those franchises I love to get at least one per console for.
It reminds me of Hyper Dimension, so that definitely makes me want it to come to the West. Though I'm already pleased we've got Xenoverse coming our way soon.
EDIT: "Higher-res" scan (or at least a bigger image + translated )

Will wait for reviews if it comes to the west.
@Salnax I love me some original Dragon Ball. While Z definitely had its moments, it was mostly one-sided battles until someone transformed and then it flipped. Dragon Ball was about a fun adventure. Also every character seemed to matter.
@SuperWiiU Aww man. If that's true then Goku will take up half the character slots.
The SNES 2D ones are among my favourites in the series, especially Hyper Dimension which I still own and Super Butouden 3. Lots of hours of my life went into both and from what I tried of the DS one it was excellent as well, very high production values but it's too bad it didn't come out of Japan. I hope this one will.
Another Budoten game we won't get... :/
@CrimsonMoonMist Oh I wish you hadn't mentioned that...now I have to buy it.
@Samuel-Flutter He already does in several other DB fighting games.
@Ryu_Niiyama Is there a fighting game that you hate?
@SuperWiiU Frieza might have like 6 or 7? :/ I hate frieza so much.
@polivar4 Hmm Hate is a strong word for me and fighting games. To be honest I'll play any franchise once and I buy most that I can get my hands on (it is the only genre I do this for) mainly because my FG tastes are different from my friends and I'd rather have something they want to play rather than getting stuck playing a shooter. I'm not a fan of MK (too slow!), and I don't like most of the anime games UNLESS they are 2d (Like I loved the ps2 Hokuto no Ken game) and the most recent Samsho and Soul Calibur games were disappointing. I didn't used to like Tekken but TTT2 is helping with that (I still own many Tekken games though) and I'm starting to get into DoA though I still feel that VF is supreme overlord. But I also tend to like games that some people don't; for instance I still like to play Battle Fantasia. So no, I don't really hate any fighting games as I'll play any game that somebody shoves my way. I just have preferences over what I'll play alone and train in.
I think part of it stems from the fact that as a child I used to have to almost beg to get someone to play against me in the arcades because I'm female. However once most folks realized I knew what I was doing that stopped the cold shoulders and eye rolls. Going to the arcade was like heaven for me. Likely why I build sticks in my spare time (such that it is).
@marnelljm Dragon Ball Xenoverse is a great title and favorite DBZ game c:
be cool if we could get this in america and have miis playable fighters but if not thats fine too
@CrimsonMoonMist Wicked.
