Valentine's Day is now less than a week away, which means that a sudden inflation of prices for cards, chocolates and flowers is well underway. If you do have a special somebody to share the day with it can be pricey, but if you're a youngster - or simply young at heart - then Nintendo is offering some alternatives.
The Play Nintendo website - which is targeted at young children - now has a Valentine's Day page that, unsurprisingly considering the target audience, is all about friendship. No need for expensive gifts here, as you can show a special friend how much you care by printing out a card yourself, showing both friendship and frugality.
Naturally this hub page is going for the super-cute approach, which is fair enough, though Nintendo does get into the spirit of this commercially-driven holiday by using its Valentine's Day video as one long advert for games.
Naturally the absence of a Choo-Choo-Choose You card is a fairly shocking oversight, as surely The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks art could have been dragged out for that - the internet is happy to oblige with its own versions, regardless. Maybe next year, Nintendo.

Whole thing seems like a McDonalds marketing campaign.
Some of those are cute - I'll never leaf you - some are odd. Nice that Nitneod is making the effort though, I can easily see these things passed around in elementary schools.
Edit - That video was so punny. Glad to see Nintnedo hasn't forgotten about Yoshi after they left him out of the ND. Maybe summer?
Staying in the friends zone
Lol, I just lost it with Ganondorf's line: "Give me your Triforce of Friendship!"
Friendship is Magic...I'll go in the corner, now.
Tingle?!! Gross, no!
@NintendoFan64 Friendship is magic?Yes it is
I love that Ganondorf one!
it's so hilariously out of character while still being phrased in a way that makes me imagine it coming from him.
The Tingle one is the best.
@rjejr I'd hope Yoshi comes out before E3 but given the release lineup it looks like that would only happen if in April.
That green Yoshi is disturbing. It says "You're a good egg!" and shows Yoshi squeezing out an egg. Talk about a backfired compliment...
Some of these are great (you're my power-up, you make my heart flutter jump) but some of them are...yeah.
That video was amazing though.
'welcome to my kingdom of friendship'.
You don't know how many girls have tried to use that line on me.
@MrGawain Then give me your Triforce of Friendship. NOW!
I'm spending my Valentines day with my new 3ds xl, MM3D, and MH4U
"You're the only treasure I need!"
Well uh, at this rate, I'll be out of money for a while, so uh...
MUST. PRINT OUT. CARDS!
yay
This is my sort of thing, broes before hoes, but i dont have any friends either :/ well sh*t
Peach: Welcome to my kingdom of friendship!
Poor Mario, always getting friendzoned... Anyway, I wouldn't want to receive a card like that from a girl I like on valentines day. That'd actually make me sad, even if I still was a kid >_< They shouldn't mix days
I like the Tetra and Whispy Woods. I think it's a bit weird for friendship to accompany a heart, but perhaps kids think differently.
Full on friendship!
I'm giving away my Triforce of friendship. Anyone want it?
Cringe-inducing. But cute. XD
"Give me your Triforce of Friendship!" is hilarious.
The Donkey Kong one should say "I'D SHOWER YOU WITH COCONUT CREAM PIES".
Aw, some of the cards are very cute, I should print some. And that video was great, advertising while being adorable
If you want to friend zone your valentine, here you go
Why didn't the Dedede card say 'I need a valentine to clobber that there Kirby!'?
Some of them are cute. I don't like the "friendship" ones, except for Luigi. That one could only be more perfect if it showed Luigi shrugging or looking disappointed.
@Grumblevolcano - Splatoon is May, which is probably their big before E3 game. Mario vs Donkey Kong and it's level editor mechanic is out March 5th on both 3DS and Wii U I think messes up when Mario Maker comes out. Kirby and it's 2D platforming is Feb 20 so Yoshi won't be too soon after that. So either Yoshi or Mario in April. Probably Yoshi, and then MM in June.
Feb - Kirby
Mar - Mario vs DK
Apr - Yoshi
May - Splatoon
June - MM
That would be a pretty good 5 months for Wii U. W/ Starfox and Zelda after that if they are to be believed.
"You make my heart flutter-jump!"
10/10 cuteness.
Ganons. 10/10
Like the way luigi = let's be friends and mario = you're my power up.
Either you get luigi fail or mario win this valentines.
I'm going to send Vinny that Tingle card for the sake of it.
Yup, looks like Peach never plans to put out.
Dang. Even Nintendo is friend zoning me.
@Zobocop
Lol. Well after 20 years, Mario should have given up hope by now.
Give me your triforce of friendship!
@Kirby_Fan_DL3 LOL!! XD
@rjejr
Not sure if it is because you dont care about it, but you are missing Mario Party 10 on March.
@Nicolai Me too. It's completely hilarious.
I love the Mario one.
Friendship? Ponies would be proud.
I'm totally gonna print out that Tingle card one of these days. You know, for reasons...
That Tingle card is the best
Welcome to my Kingdom of Friendship? These are some creative and fun ways to friend zone some poor sap. I think if I was still single and got that Ganondorf card it may make me feel almost ok with it.
@sinalefa - Thanks. You're right, I don't care about it, but that's no excuse for me being sloppy w/ my calendar. That's a pretty big Wii U title as well, w/ it's own separate amiibo line. Mario Party 10 is probably a bigger reason for Mario Maker being left out of the ND than Maro vs Donkey Kong. Thanks for setting me straight.
@Mega719 "Staying in the friends zone"
I was just about to say the same thing.
Better than the old Valentines day cards.
In response to Peach's:
"Okaaaaay...this is the part where I get taken to the "friendship dungeon," isn't it?"
These are disturbing...
@AshFoxX At least it doesn't say "You want me inside you".
Here in my country Valentine's Day is called "Day of Love and Friendship". So basically we have to spend more money on, not just valentines, but also friends...
Thankfully I have no friends hahaha...ha.... [sob]
Not their best slew of puns, but they have to drive the point of having many quality software titles available, so lately the humorous surplus hasn't been as apparent.
