I wish Nintendo didn't lean into the dollhouse-builder aspect of Animal Crossing for New Horizons. There's so many great new features in NH that make going back to New Leaf hard, but it feels like they sanded off all the quirky and idiosyncratic edges to appeal to those who play to make an Instagram aesthetic island. (which is totally cool, no hate on those people!) It's not like I didn't have fun, but it isn't something that I was really pulled into like NL.
Interesting way to play, just very much not for me. Nuzlockes are cool, though I've never done one myself, but imposing all these rules on a chill game like Animal Crossing seems like it'd just make everything a slog.
I don't doubt that CoD on Switch is possible, albeit with some maaaajor optimization work and visual downgrades. I just don't know who the target audience is. It's good to have options, but I don't know anyone who would say "Oh boy, I can't wait to play CoD on my Switch!"
Like whenever something like this happens, my biggest takeaway is that creatives need to be paid more for the huge amounts of effort they put into their work.
Not like this is unexpected, but come ON, Atlus. Persona 5's been out since 2016 and Royal's been out since 2020. Spoilers have been all around the internet for years, it's not like this is gonna stop em.
@Faruko I haven't seen an NFT game that's actually fun yet. A lot of these games are built as "play-to-earn", which turns out to mean "spend hours of grinding to get whatever crypto token this game has and sell it for a price that works out to below minimum wage". It's actually sorta depressing, because a lot of players of games like Axie Infinity are from lower-income countries and rent out the required Pokemon-equivalent NFTs from rich owners and give em a cut of the sales.
Yet again, Squenix is trend chasing, and I'm saying this as a fan of FFXIV and various other Squenix games. I get that you can't have all your eggs in one basket, but they've got a powerhouse with FFXIV, Dragon Quest, the HD-2D JRPGs, and FF7R. Especially with something as touchy as crypto and NFTs (I'm personally against them, not necessarily in concept but absolutely in practice), I don't think it's worth potentially burning all the goodwill they have after Endwalker, Live A Live, and 7R.
Gen 5 will always be my pick for story, but I actually like some of the characters from Gen 8. Hop, Marnie, and Bede all being different types of rivals that act as foils to each other, the real story behind Team Yell, the main villain's greater-scope goal being somewhat more justifiable than "I wanna take over the world" or "I wanna steal everyone's Pokémon then take over the world"... Maybe I read too much into characters but I found a lot of depth there that wasn't present in SwSh's general plot.
Oh man, sweet! This is a pretty good way to carry over some progress without just giving every returning player the same exact gear and weapons. I'm gonna miss my beloved Kensa Dualies, but there's gotta be a similar version in 3.
This guy makes fantastic stuff, he had a booth at a local Makerfaire where he showed off that same McDonalds touchscreen table and some of his cool prop work. He actually replaced the internals with a mini-PC to run Windows, Android, and emulators on it. I gotta say, playing Voez on a screen that size was hard, but the novelty was worth it.
So it's the Ouya, but with blockchain and NFTs because that'll obviously fix all the problems the Ouya had. If this is the "future" of gaming, I'll go pick up a new hobby.
Those are all SO beautiful, the art and LPs on the box set especially. I'd love to get the box set but it's a little pricey and I don't think I'd listen to the entire soundtrack that much, so I'll probably just get the Sounds of Picnic Province LP. That soundtrack's gotten me through some hard times.
I'm incredibly excited for Neon White, I played the demo a few months ago and everything was outstanding. I usually don't care about perfect runs or fast completion times, but something about this game had me replaying levels to find better shortcuts and shave seconds off my time. The music is absolutely bangin' too, Machine Girl was the perfect pick for it.
@ancientlii Gyro aiming has been confirmed by the devs, and I hope they release a demo on Switch since there was a PC demo released for the last Steam Next Fest. @EdwardElric Yep, that's Steve Blum as Neon White and ProZD as Mikey. They've really got a fantastic voice cast here.
I know I'm definitely gonna stop by the Summerfest date to pick up some swag. It's a smart move, Summerfest is pretty big music fest and has all sorts of people from families to punks to metalheads to country fans. I'm kinda amazed to see a stop in Milwaukee at all.
Back in 2016, my first year of middle school wasn't going great, and I'd lost my grandmother that October. Animal Crossing New Leaf helped me a lot, since it gave me a sense of community--both in-game with my villagers and out-of-game with the few friends I'd made through Nintendo games. No matter what, people cared about me, even if they were just some virtual cats and sheep on my 3DS. Like a lot of other people, ACNH helped me get through the start of the pandemic. It reminded me a lot of how NL helped me get through 2016, and I'd spend hours on it and talking with my now much bigger friend group since everyone was playing it. I'd also hacked my 3DS and played TWEWY, which was absolutely fantastic. The story really spoke to me, since while I've never been anti-social to the same level as Neku I certainly emphasized with him. Simply walking around a huge city and watching the crowds go by was like a little look into another world. Playing it at the same time as my brother was incredibly fun, and we both absolutely lost it when NEO:TWEWY was announced a while later. Final Fantasy XIV's helped me get through some of my current troubles. I'm graduating soon and while I'm starting college in the fall, I feel aimless and kinda stuck as not quite a kid but not really an adult. Adventuring through Eorzea and talking with my free company full of amazing amazing friends, roleplaying in player-run cafes, and watching bards put on impromptu concerts is a fantastic way to get my mind off of things.
Knowing Anamanaguchi, Porter Robinson, and 100 gecs fans (and being a fan of all three myself), it doesn't surprise me that this is happening at their shows lol
@russell-marlow Haven't played Ultra Deluxe yet, but I played the original a good bit. It's a mix of meta humor, slightly dark humor, and absurdist humor, and it's excellent.
Miis are fun, but at this point they’re kinda vestigal, unfortunately. It’s a cool little hit of nostalgia (at least for me, a Gen Z’er whose first console was a Wii), but almost every modern implementation I can think of has Miis as an afterthought. I played Warioware Gold the other day and was surprised when my Mii showed up in a game, I hadn’t seen it in so long!
Piracy. Is. Preservation. The entire games industry has a pretty bad problem with preservation, don't get me wrong, but Nintendo really is the worst. That bit about "Doesn’t Nintendo have an obligation to preserve its classic games?" in the announcement felt like a taunt.
I actually like Cafe Mix, it's a fun "turn your brain off" type puzzler, and it's just so freaking adorable. Grindstone's been scratching that itch for me recently, might come back and play Cafe Mix more if the remix thing turns out to be good.
That sums up my thoughts perfectly. The only way to actually own anything anymore is to buy a physical copy or pirate it, and with video games even a physical copy can be overwritten with update data. I really wanted to watch the movie Summer Wars after watching it with some friends, so I went looking for it. Apparently it used to be on Funimation, but it isn't anymore; all they have is trailers and bonus features now. The last place to watch it digitally, at least in the US, is Vudu, but when you buy something digitally you technically only buy a perpetual license to access it that can be revoked at any time. There was one Blu-Ray/DVD combo copy being sold on Amazon for 33 bucks, more than 3 times the price of a digital version, but I bought it anyway because the peace of mind is worth the extra cash (and I had a gift card anyway). Everywhere else was out of stock, and RightStuf Anime was the only retailer saying they expected more stock coming. Summer Wars isn't even particularly old, it's from 2009, and it's pretty well-known along with the other movies Mamoru Hosoda has directed.
@Anti-Matter Modifying something that you own is not illegal. You have your 3DSs from different regions; let us have our CFW and homebrew apps. You’re not converting anyone over to your side by yelling about how CFW is evil and how you have a massive game collection.
@Anti-Matter Alright, then don’t. Nobody’s forcing you to. I love the extra flexibility and customization that CFW allows for. I don’t know why you’re being rude and spreading misinformation.
@Anti-Matter You can mod hardware you own, and it doesn’t make people lesser for doing so. There’s no need to get rude about it.
This is also untrue; currently installed CFW works just fine, though apparently the update changed the method for installing CFW and the “main” guide will be updated shortly, according to the homebrew Discord.
I love Skate City on my phone, it's probably my most played Apple Arcade game, but I'm not sure I'd shell out for it on Switch. If you're looking for a good, chill skating game though, definitely check it out.
Ugh, more shovelware, this time a blatant ripoff. When will devs learn they can't shove a mobile game onto Switch, remove freemium BS, slap a 20 dollar price tag on it, and call it done? The one game I can think of that did that well was Voez, and that's because Voez is a really solid rhythm game in the first place.
Fun fact: every Activision studio is now associated with CoD, even Blizzard who distributes it with Battle.net. Yet another devteam being cannibalized because the executives and shareholders demand all the money. It’s almost like corporate greed and capitalism are detrimental to, or even incapable of coexisting with, art.
Ugh, I really hope that the upcoming updates aren’t all like this. NH isn’t even close to the amount of content and depth of NL, and I’ve been optimistic about it. Let’s hope that we get something substantial as a late spring/summer update.
I'm more of a collector of the consoles, less games, so I go the route of flash carts/homebrew. I homebrewed my N2DS at the start of this whole pandemic and I've been enjoying finally playing all the DS games I didn't buy as a kid like TWEWY and the first two Pokemon Ranger games.
Wow. The resolution part isn't too interesting to me — very few people have 4K TVs or monitors, much less 8K! — but that lighting is amazing. Could do without some of the outrageous god rays, though.
If they’re good quality masks, I don’t mind paying more for ‘em. The most comfortable mask I own is one I got for 20 USD from a small streetwear business, and after forgetting it and wearing a scratchy, stiff mask all day, I realize how much better the more expensive one is. 15 bucks for shipping though, that’s a little much.
Happy birthday, Nintendo Life! Y’all are the best. It may just be social media, but I see a lot of people taking the extreme ends of Nintendo fandom and hatedom, so NL’s perspective is incredibly refreshing. You’re honest in your reviews, you’re fair about both the positives and the negatives, and you’re willing to look back and dip into some nostalgia without letting rose-colored glasses override everything. Oof, those screenshots look rough. I'm not a "graphics come first" type of person, but I'd have a hard time playing through this on Switch.
