Apparently, a "certain super spy" could be making a return in the coming weeks. This is according to VGC editor and former Playtonic Games writer Andy Robinson, who shared a message over on Twitter.
While it's unclear who exactly this spy could be, one obvious guess is James Bond. Some have also referenced SNK's '90s release The Super Spy, Spy Fox (already locked in for a Switch release next week) and various other video game characters that work in the same field or a similar one.
We're talking about other characters like Snake (Metal Gear Solid), Sam Fisher (Splinter Cell), Cate Archer (No One Lives Forever) and Joanna Dark (Perfect Dark).
Robinson's mate (Christopher Dring - head of GamesIndustry.biz) was spotted wearing a GoldenEye 007 themed watch in one of the photos attached to this tweet, which has only fueled speculation about it being something to do with James Bond, and there's a new 007 game on the way, too. Graslu00, an individual associated with the leaked Xbox 360 remaster, even replied:
GoldenEye 007 resurfaced at the start of 2022 when achievements for an Xbox version of the game were discovered. It follows on from GoldenEye 007's ban being lifted in Germany late last year. As exciting as it is that Rare's 1997 first-person shooter could be returning, it's unclear right now if this rumoured release would go beyond Xbox. And once again, there are no guarantees anything will necessarily happen at all.
Nintendo most recently released Rare's Banjo-Kazooie on its Switch Online Expansion Pack service, so with any luck, it can perhaps work something out with Microsoft and get GoldenEye 007 on there - if it does end up making a return.
Apart from 007, what other super spy would you like to see again? Take a guess in the comments below.

I’d stake my life on it being an Xbox exclusive remaster. If I’m wrong, I’d clearly die happy though.
Here before people moan about rose tinted glasses. To that I say: shhh let people enjoy things.
Personally I'd be more hyped if Perfect Dark gets a release on the app as well.
@nessisonett comment made me laugh
Is the NeoGeo Super Spy not already on Switch?
Yeah right and I’m Miyamoto. 🙄
I already know. It's the Spy Fox dry cereal game. :/
I hope the 360 remaster hits XBOX and Switch. But I will take the N64 original any day.
So Nintendo Direct in a few weeks to announce a duel release then?
So we’re getting a direct and this is the shadow drop
@Angelic_Lapras_King lol you and I were typing the same thing at the same time. Jinx.
@nessisonett I'd expect the possibility of GamePass and maybe Nintendo Switch Online. Though I'd hope to have an option to purchase on Switch as well.
@Greatluigi Hi Miyamoto, when is Mother 3 coming to the West?
I want Perfect Dark even more though 😁
Superspy? JOHNNY ENGLISH?
@sixrings Here's hoping.. I've been waiting since the last direct so they could finally announce Alan Wake Remastered. It was rated by two ratings boards for the Switch last Fall. I'll put aside whatever visual novel I'm working on just to buy and play that.
@HotGoomba Miyamoto: Not my department. Please go see and enjoy the Mario movie when it come out.
@sixrings Great minds, etc.
SECRET SQUIRREL!
No there won’t
@Domino
@ModdedInkling
Licensing hell..
Spoiler alert: it's Remington Steele
I can’t look at golden eyes cover without seeing that dude with big lips.
@Domino …you don’t know that for sure.
Never left my house.
Launch day N64 still works fine and Goldeneye is never far from it.
Everyone knows it’s Gex
Please don’t be an Xbox remaster and a Switch Online emulation if it comes to Switch.
Pond. James Pond.
It’s James Bond jr for the snes
It's happening! Just need the details on what is going where, but my gut feeling is that we may see the remaster arriving on Xbox and the original joining NSO.
We'll learn the next NSO release in about 3 weeks, assuming Nintendo continue the announcement pattern. That would mean a release at the end of March.
@WhiteTrashGuy doesn't the Xbox 360 remaster's already work on series X/S via back compatibity?
As much as I want this to happen, it would take a miracle for this to come about. not raising my hopes too high.
Even if it re-releases on Switch, we still can’t buy a copy in 2022. NSO is a waste of time.
@gopher1369 it was leaked, it only runs on modded 360 systems and pc emulators
N64 Goldeneye for switch, Cloud edition, requiring Xbox Live account and Microsoft account :/
Me and my mate spent hours laughing at the Robbie Coltrane face, skinned onto his character on the n64
Could be Gex. That was a fun little game.
Even if it was Goldeneye 64 it’s best to lower your expectations, and I mean really lower them as once you get past the whiff of nostalgia and stop looking at things through rose tinted glasses you’ll realise that time hasn’t been very kind to the game…….stick with the memories.
@Macadamia My expectations of GoldenEye arriving on Switch this year are equal to my expectations of instantly blowing up when dropping out of the vent and into the toilet cubicle on Facility, Proximity Mines.
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who never really enjoyed the game that much even back in the day. As such I wouldn't really mind either way if James Bond returns or not. Not for myself anyway, but for his fans I hope he does, even if it may be unlikely!
Finally a new spy vs spy game with online support.
Before Goldeneye would come to NSO they'll first bring all the other announced games to it. If it comes, then it'll still take a while.
I think Xbox would get the cancelled 360 remaster for XB1/Series X|S meanwhile Switch gets the N64 original on NSO Expansion Pack.
I don't think that it will be released on Switch. Nintendo's publishing rights have expired and the game copyright belongs to Rare (Microsoft), the IP belongs to Danjaq and the movie to MGM/Eon. Unless Microsoft wants to make a multiplatform release, obviously. It has happened before with the remaster of Banjo-Kazooie on Xbox and the N64 version on Nintendo Online. I can see that Microsoft is the force behind this revival since Nintendo stopped the Xbox 360 remaster when they had the publishing rights. And yes, I think it's Goldeneye 007 because of all the hints, including the watch.

@Domino That licence is for making new games, not for allowing the use of the IP. It's known since 2020 that IO Interactive is working on a new James Bond game.
https://www.purexbox.com/news/2020/11/hitman_developer_io_interactive_is_working_on_a_james_bond_game
@CaptainCluck In reality, the distributors of the film don't hold any power in regard to the game. It's just the owner of the IP, Danjaq, who has to authorise the use of the James Bond IP. The game itself is owned by Rare (Microsoft) and Nintendo had the publishing rights until they expired.
https://gamerant.com/goldeneye-007-copyright-nintendo/
I like the old newspaper strips better, than both the movies and the games
Spy vs Spy and Secret Squirrel are excellent guesses, but it’s got to be Darkwing Duck!
@Bustacap not Goldeneye, I was replying to a post about hoping for a port of Perfect Dark
I'd love to see a remaster of No One Lives Forever 1 & 2 ♥️
Half of everything is luck.
By “Robinson’s mate” do you mean veteran UK games journalist Chris Dring? Since he responded to the tweet it wouldn’t really have taken long to do due diligence on that.
@CaptainCluck
I would like to think that would be the case. The main problem is that they probably never held any official talks to getting this sorted out; it wasn't of the highest interest, probably.
Wasn’t that guy with the watch, the same guy who said Wind Waker and Twilight Princess was 100% coming to Switch last year?
….I won’t hold my breath for Goldeneye
I really hope Nintendo and Microsoft makes the real deal here, and brings it to both Switch and Gamepass with onlineplay and united player pool. I really miss classic non-Call of Duty FPS multiplayer like Goldeneye...
@RasandeRose same. Loved Goldeneye and Perfect Darks gameplay, but the following gen when it was Halo and then Call of Duty... Something was lost for me and I still can't quite put my finger on it. Even now I'm more comfortable with the controls for GE/PD that folks complain about
@Jmjfrank
I actually have no problems at all with Goldeneye controls even today when I play it on my good ol' 64. I find them actually to be easier than modern console FPS, as by the shooting gallery-like game design, you don't really do much aiming.
If Nintendo could get Sora in Smash and do what they have done with impossible ports like Doom Eternal & Witcher 3, plus return Banjo & Kazooie home, they can definitely pull off getting any game they want on the Switch platform as long as they want it to happen. I see Goldeneye & Perfect Dark as eventualities.
@RadGravity Chris was referenced in the source article, but I'll add him to this story as well.
Calling it now, Xbox will get an awesome remaster with modernised control and smartened up visuals and sound, Switch will just get the N64 rom dumped onto the emulator...framerate issues, old style controls and all.
Dark days coming to NSO. NSO finally gets Gold status. Which might happen?
@gopher1369 goldeneye isn’t on the backwards compatibility list for xbox
It's probably referring to James Pond
the rumored James Bond game coming to Xbox Series X/S?
It's gonna be SPY CHAMELEON YEAAAAA BABY
How about a Super Smash Brothers-esque FPS with all the great spies from the games mentioned in the article in an old school format? A little bit of nostalgia mixed with some modern day multiplayer action?
As thin as the N64 library is without Rare's contributions, I'm thinking Nintendo is willing to dig deep in the pocket to add Goldeneye 007 to NSO, which increases NSO's "value" that Nintendo claims it's obsessed with doing. I don't think anyone would object... It'd be a win for everyone.
@Giancarlothomaz
I hope it’s not exclusive to Series X and S. No one can find these consoles.
@Banjo- @ModdedInkling
It’s not usual to get the rights renewed so that old games based on movie IPs can be sold again. Although Scott Pilgrim coming back happened, and Disney have been pretty relaxed with the Lucasart games in recent years.
If it's not Metal Gear, Splinter Cell or Goldeneye, I'm not interested
Please, be the cancelled xbox360 remaster, after pokemon I don't want more n64 graphics.(Also, it really looked good and was basically completed)
@Axecon Nintendo didn't port the witcher nor doom, give the credits to Panic button and Saber Interactive.
@Don
I feel like Xbox "exclusivity" also means Game Pass, which makes PC (and technically mobile) an option as well.
@fenlix They might have not done the actual porting work but they still were behind the negotiations. The Switch has done a fantastic job of bringing over more mature audiences and games from the historic family-friendly image Nintendo has preached in the 90s and early 2000s. Rarely before the Switch did we see third party AAA shooter/fantasy games come to Nintendo consoles if at all. I'm just saying, Nintendo's negotiating power this generation has brought unusual and unthinkable titles to the console and they could convince any game to land on their platform due to the success the Switch has had.
@gopher1369
Yeah, it should. I have gamepass, but only on my phone (cloud gaming). I hope it hits Switch. What I meant was I don't care if I get the remaster of Goldeneye or the N64 version.
It's so obviously going to be a remaster of Wii's Totally Spies! Totally Party.
Totally.
@HotGoomba this is the most comment ever
Pablo from backyardagains gets a AAA release?!?!?!
If it is Goldeneye 64, I hope it is for sale and not on NSO.
@CaptainCluck This is a very interesting case. It seems very complicated with many owners but, in reality, the owner of the IP is Danjaq and the film distribution rights are not needed for the video game so the rights that matter are the ownership of the IP (Danjaq) and the ownership of the video game (Microsoft). The film makers have rights to make films and IO has rights for making games but I assume that they have little power in regard to re-releasing old games because they have permission to make new games with an IP that it's not theirs.
According to the article published on Nintendo Life in 2021, the developers think that it was Nintendo that stopped the Xbox 360 remaster in 2008 but since Nintendo's publishing rights expired in 2017, Nintendo could no longer block Goldeneye 007 re-release.
If all these hints reported on Pure Xbox and Nintendo Life are true, the game will be released soon. Graslu00 supports the tweet and he is a person related to the Xbox 360 remaster leak last year. The first day of 2022 was the day a new achievement list for the game was leaked. It seems that an imminent release is likely. So many clues...
@Axecon I don't think that those ports exist because of Nintendo's negotiations. As long as Switch is popular and ports sell well, third-party developers will make ports for Switch. This has been explained by many developers. For Nintendo is very easy to do so because they're porting Wii U games that are technically at Switch's level while porting PS4 and Xbox One games to Switch has proved to be far more challenging, with many sacrifices (resolution, frame rate, textures, lighting, polygons, assets) made but, as long as they earn money doing so, that's what will happen. There is no other reason.
Could be James Pond..
Backyardigans 2.
My money is on Spy Hunter… 😆
Austin Powers isn't a video game character, so he can't be the first character in the 3rd smash ultimate season pass... Nope, I don't know any other super spy.
I get to jump out of restroom air vents again!
Honestly, I was hoping for Gex.
@Axecon Since the wii u their consoles has been receiving more mature games, even nintendo funded bayonetta 2 and devil's third.(Also it had some +18 exclusives such as Zombieu, Fatal frame and Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge).
The wii u only was underpowered and had low sales. The switch is only getting more mature games cuz the console is a massive success.
James Pond? Stirling Archer? Who knows
My Favorite Super Spy is coming back! /j
@Domino Io Interactive is not owned by Square for years, they soon off (like Bungie and Microsoft) they are now independent, working on three games, one of them supposedly being Project Dragon, a Xbox exclusive.
Also they dont own the rights, they have a license for ONE game so far, it is not a even a exclusive license.
