If you've been paying attention to the news, this week's Japanese charts from Famitsu will be pretty predictable. Splatoon 3 has inked all over the charts, and — in the week of 5th to 11th September — the third squid-based shooter has sold just under a staggering 2 million copies.
These are only physical copies, of course. We say 'only' with a mountain of salt and irony, of course, because in just three days, Splatoon 3 smashed Japanese launch sales records, selling nearly 3.5 million (digitally and physically). 1,934,680 boxed retail copies sold is unprecedented.

So, what's the next best-selling game of the week? Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. That game might be five years old, but 12,605 copies next to 1.9 million looks pretty tiny. And Mario Kart 8's (and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's) lifetime physical sales sit at nearly 5 million in Japan. Splatoon 3's sales will dip after this week, but it'll be interesting to see if it keeps consistent sales numbers for the rest of the year.
In brief, the Switch has once again dominated the charts, taking up nine of the top ten spots. Earth Defense Force 6 is the only PlayStation 4 game, and joining Splatoon 3 as this week's other new entry is MAGES.' action game Alice Gear Aigis CS: Concerto of Simulatrix.
Here are this week's charts in full:
- [NSW] Splatoon 3 (Nintendo, 09/09/22) – 1,934,680 (New)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04/28/17) – 12,605 (4,827,754)
- [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft, 06/21/18) – 9,331 (2,786,049)
- [NSW] Nintendo Switch Sports (Nintendo, 04/29/22) – 9,071 (724,712)
- [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure (Nintendo, 10/18/19) – 7,900 (3,271,715)
- [PS4] Earth Defense Force 6 (D3 Publisher, 08/26/22) – 7,806 (91,183)
- [NSW] Kirby and the Forgotten Land (Nintendo, 03/25/22) – 7,115 (883,907)
- [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo, 12/07/18) – 5,866 (4,971,812)
- [NSW] Alice Gear Aigis CS: Concerto of Simulatrix (MAGES., 09/08/22) – 5,538 (New)
- [NSW] Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak Set (Capcom, 06/30/22) – 4,927 (265,714)
As you'd expect from Splatoon 3's dominance, the Switch takes up the top three spots on the hardware sales charts, with the OLED more than doubling last week's sales numbers, selling nearly 150,000 units. That Splatoon 3 OLED has probably been helping a bunch, and it will probably continue to do so, as it's pretty darn nice. As a result, the PlayStation 5's impressive last few weeks have ended, but both the disc and Digital units sit comfortably under the Switch.
- Switch OLED Model – 148,377 (2,525,961)
- Switch – 27,859 (18,666,760)
- Switch Lite – 6,640 (4,886,242)
- PlayStation 5 – 2,227 (1,649,691)
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 637 (264,810)
- Xbox Series S – 284 (165,246)
- Xbox Series X – 175 (158,925)
- New 2DS LL (including 2DS) – 74 (1,188,680)
- PlayStation 4 – 11 (7,819,860)

Impressive! One of the greatest games this year. And that OLED version is a thing of beauty.
It's Splatoon! I know people said that it did not "differentiate itself enough from Splatoon 2" before the first Splatfest (and that observation aged like milk) so it would probably have a hard time selling itself to returning players. However, in a world where COD still sells millions as a yearly release despite not changing major mechanics and only adding new maps and maybe a new time period as set dressing, is underestimating the desire for a new Splatoon that much of a stretch?
Splatoon 3 will probably not outsell Splatoon 2 (it is just very late in the Switch's lifecycle), but it will I'd say sell probably 9-10 million units.
Immense really, weird to think the biggest game launch in Japan ever, is only 7 years old and originated on the WiiU.
Also I think there's big irony as Splatoon, Splatoon 2 AND Splatoon 3 had all fell under scrutiny whether they'd succeed or not. But is now firmly up there with LoZ, Pokemon ,Mario.and Animal Crossing.
Holy Squid! Is that a record for first week sales? Absolutely inkredible performance, and a squirt in the eye for those saying that "Splatoon 2.5" wasn't wanted!
Splatoon has basically become Japan's national sport at this point lol.
@Wexter Late in it's life? How many times does Nintendo have to tell you it's half way!? Those OLED figures are launch day numbers!
Switch sold well last week and I'm pissed about that!
Completely, 100% deserved. I played a TON of Splatoon 2 and #3 improves upon it in every way- and that’s saying a lot. Turf War rules, Salmon Run almost feels like a roguelike, and Table Turf is crazy fun too. The single-player is brilliant and the lore stuff is outstanding. Buying & leveling up clothes is addictive as hell and the whole thing is gorgeous to look at. I was kinda “meh” on the September Direct but honestly? Doesn’t matter much to me, cause I think I’ve fully caught the Splatoon bug and with so much content at launch + in the pipeline I’ll be chillin’ in Splatsville for a nice long while. If you run into ERMATERD, that’s me.
NintenDOMINATION
Sure would LOVE that “connection issues” update sooner rather than later though, I have verified fantastic internet at my house and it’s kinda bad. Not usually on my end, but about half my matches end with someone getting disconnected. Fix it Nintendo, we WANT to play your game!
@Wexter wouldnt it being late in the switches life cycle do the opposite? More players to sell to, splatoon 3 will definitely sell more than splatoon 2
And this is why Nintendo wont bother and fix connection issues online.
@UltimateOtaku91 I think that really depends the most important factor is the number of active users rather than the system sales
The 3DS sold well but stuff late in its life span and especially after the Switch launched had limited level of success purely due to fewer people actively buying new games.
Though I think Splatoon 3 might outsell Splatoon 2. Usually the peak period for software sales for a system is after the peak for hardware sales so 2022/2023 games should do extremely well but 2024 onwards will probably see a decline. Though I'd suspect by the end of 2024 well be hearing about the Switch 2 or whatever the next Nintendo hardware will be.
@GrailUK I'm saying late as Splatoon 2 had 5 years to make the numbers it did. While Splatoon 3 might only have 2-3 years. Much less time to impact the charts the way the 2nd game did. But, it could also sell more like @Dr_Lugae said it all depends on how many people are actively buying games.
But still, 9-10 million units is nothing to sneeze over and would only be fewer units than Splatoon 2 by 3 million. That is unless you honestly believe Nintendo won't release a Switch successor till 2027 rather than 2024/2025.
@Wexter I'm pretty confident that Splatoon 3 will sell at least as much as Splatoon 2's 13 million.
Well it's back to Switch dominant once again in the Land of the Rising Sun. You tried Sony, you tried and failed.
@BTB20 I have my personal doubts. But, that would be rather amazing! Love Splatoon!
That's a big chunk of change for Nintendo
In just 3 days, Splatoon 3 physical sales reached 40% of lifetime sales of Mario Kart 8 deluxe physical sales in Japan, with that game released more than 5 years ago (if my maths are good) !!! The obsession for this series is crazy.
@Wexter I think your right about 2024 for the Switch successor to be released. I'm thinking the second half of the year as it stands.
However, Switch sales continue to be very strong, if sales don't slow down too much a 2025 release for Switch 2 might be on the cards instead...
Depends on Nintendos strategy and whether or by how much they decide to discount the hardware nearer the end of it's life..
Nintendo knows they have a "cash cow" with the Switch so might try to extend the life cycle even further... Time will tell.
I'd love to hear from someone who lives in Japan about why the Japanese love Splatoon so much. With other mega-successful series like Pokémon and Dragon Quest, you can kind of understand the games' popularity as they have been around for a long time and offer a sense of comforting familiarity to gamers of different ages and backgrounds. Splatoon, however, originated on the Wii U not very long ago and it's quite innovative in various ways, so it's a bit atypical compared to its peers.
What happen with PS5 sales in Japan ? 😟
There are some interesting kids games on PS5 too.
You misspelled Aegis in the #9 slot.
@TheRealKyleHyde Comforting familiarity doesn't really have anything to do with the success of Dragon Quest or Pokémon, seeing as how those franchises were popular since their first entries. In fact the opposite is true for Pokémon since the originals are still the highest selling games in the series.
@Wexter I don't know when Nintendo will launch a new console, but 150K OLEDs, 5 years after the original launched, in September? Games sell systems. To me, it's ludicrous to think Nintendo don't want to sell software to such a large install base and release a new console instead. The Switch as we know it isn't going anywhere till at least 2027. Maybe the Switch Pro will sit alongside the current models and not look to out and out replace it. I don't know, it hurts my brain thinking about it to be fair. Exclusives on a new system introduces the 'third pillar' type environment and the unifying of their teams to one console has served them so well. The Switch hasn't really had a price cut. So would a new console have to be artificially inflated? Do they price cut something that is still flying off shelves? I'm glad I'm not President. Any sort of new generation usually follows a decline in sales. Sure, we may be past the Switch's peak (and even that was skewed due to Covid years) but it's not dropping off a cliff or anything. It's really important they don't let it as they have their eggs all in one basket. I don't know if 2023 is premature. I would buy a Switch Pro tomorrow, but I'm struggling to see the logistics of releasing it currently besides 'moar powah!' or when to start thinking about a transition period. First to admit I'm not the sharpest tool in the box. Who knows. The lack of big first party announcements in the last Direct might suggest you are right about it being sooner than later.
(Really sorry for the long post and don't read anything I say as angry or anything.)
Great numbers!
Absolutely staggering launch numbers for Japan. This game is going to have no issue outselling Splatoon 2, from the looks of it.
@GrailUK The thing is the Switch could still hang around. The PS4 still gets regular releases in 2022 almost 9 full years on the market. The PS4 this year is getting Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (remake), God of War: Ragnarok and Hogwarts Legacy. So, Nintendo still supporting Switch releases to 2026 or 2027 is not impossible. Just it's going to start getting harder to get consistent 3rd party support as PS5s and XSX consoles start hitting their release & sales stride.
I think the Switch 2 would be a 2024 or 2025 release. The thing is by then the supply chain issues should be resolved. That and Switch sales will surely start to dip in 2023 as PS5 and Xbox Series X stock starts to stabilize and key exclusives start to role out or games like Elder Scrolls 6 arrive (which while I love the Switch would not be able to run). So, a Switch successor in 2024/2025 is not unreasonable as that also opens up companies like Capcom, Square Enix and others to consider re-releasing games the Switch missed out on like Devil May Cry 5, Final Fantasy XV and Resident Evil 4 (remake). I mean, mobile GPUs have come a LONG way since the Tegra x1 so getting these games on the go in 2/3 years would be a massive selling point.
I'm not saying the balancing act won't be tricky, but to assume the Switch won't have a successor out when the hardware is starting to really limit Nintendo's own geniuses like Monolith is something to be aware of. It is not unprecedented for Nintendo to support a console for a decade (Gameboy/Gameboy Color 1989-2001), but to remain competitive as Switch sales will start to stagnate after Tears of the Kingdom (I highly doubt Metroid Prime 4 will hit BotW numbers as Metroid has never been a big sales driver), Nintendo should consider some sort of hardware refresh within the next two years. If even announcing they have one to maintain interest.
Japan love Splatoon: there's not much more to say.
But it's too soon for a sequel! 🤣 That's why Nintendo shouldn't be listening to the naysayers. They don't have a clue.
@Wexter Well I hope you are right
Such is the Power of Nintendo, Squids and Octopi!
Be purchasing a copy today for the kids, school holidays starts!!
@Wexter I realize this was a small part of your post, but do you think ES VI is coming to anything other than PC and Xbox?
@IronMan30 I think it depends. Xbox really wants to push Gamepass as their main pillar rather than XSX/XSS consoles. So the game coming to PS5 (or a Switch successor) is not out of the question (Microsoft still releases games on Nintendo and Sony platforms). But, considering that Gamepass is only on Xbox and Windows platforms I would not count on it.
tl;dr I have no sweet clue. Depends on how Microsoft wants Bethesda to operate in the Xbox family. If they just want to use Bethesda IPs to generate Gamepass revenue then no. If they allow Bethesda the same autonomy as Mojang then maybe.
Beyond being the fastest-selling game ever in Japan, Splatoon 3 also had the biggest retail launch of any game in Japan since Pokemon X/Y, released back when digital sales were almost nonexistent.
Will be interesting to see Pokemon Scarlet/Violet compares as it is the only game remaining on Switch that can reach these kind of numbers.
@Anti-Matter
I remember hearing reports from the last two years that Sony really hasn't done a great job catering to Japanese audiences. Whatever magic they did with the PS4 marketing, it's just not there with the PS5. The jump from PS4 to PS5 feels nowhere near as substantial as previous generations.
The game is a masterpiece IMO. On the surface it might seem like more of the same("2.5" if you will), but when you dig deeper, you start to understand all that has been changed and refined.
OLED numbers were already high last week and it got even bigger lol. Also Splatoon making bank.
