Got a bit confused at first since this game isn't from a Japanese studio. But I can understand that JRPG implies turn-based and not necessarily its literal definition.
Lol at some of the comments asking for ATLUS games from ghostlight. SMT V is already coming to the Switch and the possibility of any new ports being handled by ghostlight is incredibly low. But hey, I would love to be able to play Digital Devil Saga on the Switch (maybe this time with it's original story?).
Getting Goku in Smash wouldn't calm everyone down. His inclusion would open the flood gates and have even more people making ridiculous requests and complaining. I'm fine with Nintendo's rule of having the characters be classic and/big VIDEO-GAME characters first. We still have plenty of big Nintendo names and popular indie characters to go through from Golden Sun's Issac to Shantae.
@electrolite77 If you're talking about Valkyria Chronicles 1, it's been out for years. It's on Steam and even got a PS4 remaster (with a nice steelbook case).
I was about to raise a finger at the "best RPG on Switch" statement but then I realized it may be right. It's only "real" competition right now is what, Disgaea 5 and Xenoblade Chronicles 2? I really hope SMT V blows them all out of the water. For now I'll definitely be picking Octopath up.
@JaxonH You may be right but due to my personal experiences the idea of PC gaming being niche today is bewildering. I can understand the lack of PC exclusives in the last 5 years making more people just okay with gaming on a PS4. But in terms of having the biggest access to games, a Nintendo console and a PC is vital. Unlike consoles a PC can still run games from the 80s and with sites like GOG and Steam (and emulators) the gaming library is virtually unlimited and spans the entire history of videogames.
So there has been many times where I get the feeling from the comments here that many Nintendo people don't play games on Steam. I understand how much better it feels to play indie games on the Switch, but these kinds of sales cannot be people second dipping on the game. I'm surprised at the number of people who haven't play games like Hollow Knight yet is all. I hope Dead Cells does just as well on the Switch once it comes out.
@Eagle9 I've played almost every SMT game starting with SMT 1. My favorites are SMT 1, SMT IV Apocalypse and Nocturne. As far as spin offs go, Devil Survivor Overclocked is amazing as well as Digital Devil Saga and Persona 3 is pretty fun. (I also really liked Soul Hackers and Persona 1 but I don't believe that's a popular opinion.) The best place to start is with SMT IV or with a Persona game (either start with P3 and then move on to 4 or just play P5).
I'm surprised more than a quarter of people want a new Breath of the Wild. Personally I think it's the worst thing we could get. I love Breath of the Wild but the next Zelda entry shouldn't try to capture lightning in a bottle twice in a row. But who knows, maybe this Breath of the Wild 2 could be to the original game what Majora's Mask was to Ocarina of Time?
I really don't understand the "let's forget the 3DS" joke. Maybe it's since I also don't understand why everyone needs to upgrade to the newest iPhone everytime one comes out. I love my 3DS (there's still tons of games out there and in my backlog I've got to play) and will continue playing on it just like I'm still playing with all my older systems.
The Titan Atlas is localizing this while holding up the sky! Incredible! (I'm sorry) Anyways, I have been really excited for this game. I love Atlus games and I've tried about every SMT spin off except for DemiKids. HYPE! (In the mean time I've got to finish Persona 5 and SMT III)
Breath of the Wild and Nier:Automata coming out on the same year is unfair. BotW is amazing and I'm glad that it won Game of the Year but Best Audio/Music should have gone to Nier:A
Seems like a couple of people don't realize ATLUS is just the publisher on this one and a couple others in the past. I would suggest opting out on this one and going for 7th Dragon III Code (SEGA), Devil Survivor or Etrian Odyssey if you haven't given those games a chance yet.
I have always played with full 3D on and I'm still wowed time and time again. Games like Ocarina of Time, Metroid, Castlevania and Soul Hackers had some of the best immersive 3D. I am going to miss both dual-screen gaming and glasses-free 3D. It's at least nice to know I will always be able to replay my favorite 3D games.
Saw it early this morning! This is great! Now that I know it is in fact SMT V, it's time for me to preorder it asap and then block off all new news about the game. I want to be as surprised as possible.
Just finished it today after getting it a week ago. (I feel like I played it too fast honestly) I got really tired of backtracking every time I got a new upgrade. Still the difficulty, visuals and game-play is great. It's a new 2D Metroid that feels old but in the good way. Hopefully Nintendo and MercurySteam can keep this "fusion" going. Anyone know what the different endings/visuals are?
@Frank90 Yeah most the support characters are cool (back when they felt more solid as people instead optional waifus). I would like to know which one you would recommend for newcomers to play. FE7's long tutorial and story were kind of a bore for me and unless I'm mistaken I don't remember FE7 having an overworld you can move around it. I like recommending Sacred Stones since it's so accessible and I remember it being one of the easiest in the series (though I definitely haven't played all of them).
@Nego I usually recommend newcomers to start with Sacred Stones and even though you've already beat two games I still recommend it. The GBA fire emblems are classics and two or more of the characters will definitely stick with you.
I don't think this is a good idea. The next Zelda game shouldn't be in league with Breath of the Wild. It has been too successful to top, in my opinion. It should be something like Link Between Worlds (in purpose, not necessarily gameplay).
Hopefully I'm wrong about this but there is no way that the new Shin Megami Tensei game is going to come out this year. It won't come out til summer 2018 at best.
The gameplay in the demo didn't look well in 3D, does anyone know if the actual game has better 3D visuals? Or maybe I've gotten higher expectations after playing games like Majora's Mask and Yokai Watch?
@Churchy Awakening was great! Through it's improvements/changes it was still Fire Emblem. But I don't know if you heard about the changes Fire Emblem Fates is going to have, such as to the weapon triangle and weapons now having complete durability (don't break). I'm still interested in it, but it's definitely not a Fire Emblem people will recognize.
I'm interesting in learning more about designing buildings like schools and restaurants, are these special and do they have more functionality or purpose?
@HarryK It's not as random as you think, it's the new concept of the collaboration between Atlus (a very popular rpg developer) and Nintendo. This game is what was hyped up to be Fire Emblem and ShinMegamiTensei crossover announced a year ago. PS: Nintendo is a japanese company after all, although it's not as apparent as in this game, the colorful and carefree nature in most of their games can be said to be a japanese thing. Also like me, I'm sure there are others who have become interest in studying japanese thanks to nintendo. But yeah, it's odd that the trailer wasn't at least subtitled or voiced over, the treehouse video does give it some justice though.

I recommend starting with Atelier Ayesha or Atelier Rorona if you still want to get into this series

Luigi's Mansion 3 and Atelier Ryza PLEASE!
I would also totally buy A Hat in Time again if I had the cash.
Re: Feature: Best Nintendo 3DS Games
Popularity speaks the loudest. Persona Q but not an actual Etrian Odyssey title? Shin Megami Tensei 4: Apocalypse was a huge improvement on the 4.
