The DS and 3DS have benefitted for a number of fantastic titles in the Shin Megami Tensei series, while the Wii U also got the rather quirky Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. Now that we're into a new generation of hardware, however, the good news is that Atlus is continuing to back Nintendo systems with the franchise.
During a livestream to celebrate the series a trailer revealed that Shin Megami Tensei V is coming to the Switch, seemingly - at this stage - as an exclusive. Check it out below.
An upcoming issue of Famitsu is expected to have more details, so that'll be well worth a look. In the meantime it's pleasing to see another notable IP on the way to Nintendo's latest system.
Are you excited about this announcement? Tell us all about it in the comments below.

It's a breath of fresh air to finally know something (Other than Wolfenstein) is planned past this year for the system from a major publisher. It was getting a little worrisome given most games like this tend to get announced way out.
Wow, wondering when you guys were going to post about this.
Also wondering when that live will air.
Huh. Interested enough that this might be my first SMT game!
Day one for me, I might even have to get a special edition if they make one.
I can‘t breathe! I can‘t breathe! I can‘t breathe!
@Darkhound1999 If you have a 3DS, buy SMT IV. It starts out a little difficult, but is an amazing entry to the series.
Need release date!! 😳
@Sanicranfast I'd always had a vague interest in the game, but the different iterations/sequels? of it made it feel like it'd be hard to get into. If it's not, then I might try to play it before this comes out then!
Out of curiosity, does each each separate numbered entry generally have its own distinct plot or all of them interconnected through a continuous story?
Good to have confirmation. I might give it a go, but I have to admit I'm not the greatest Atlus fan. I can't stand Etrian Odyssey, and Tokyo Mirage Sessions, while an okay game, was much less than I hoped for. I didn't even get Persona 5 because I had been burned by Atlus games before, and I certainly wouldn't want to dedicate 100 plus hours to a game in that vein.
Either way, here's hoping this goes well. Who knows, maybe this will be the one to make me a believer.
@Darkhound1999 Each game has a different story and characters but share similar themes and setting.
The only related games are IV and Apocalypse, but they still have big differences in story and characters.
Agh! I'm too hyped to type. My favorite RPG series... Yup.
YEAH!
I'm so excited!!!
@Darkhound1999 The plot is very stand alone in SMT IV. Honestly, IV's early game twist works better when you have no prior knowledge of the franchise.
The series kinda works like final fantasy in each game being stand alone, though I'm no expert on the franchise. IV certainly is stand alone at least.
There are multiple spin offs with their own stories, the most famous being Persona. But for Nintendo consoles, IV is a fantastic experience.
My only warning is that the game uses real religious symbology and themes/characters so can be uncomfortable at times for practicing Christians. It uses Mary, Angels and God the same way it uses Hindu gods/monsters and mythical creatures.
I'll definitely look into this as I've never played a mainline game in the series (or really any other game), and I'm aware it's got a big following.
There were a few things that irked be about the aesthetic and general vibe of Tokyo Mirage Sessions (not that I sat down and came to an informed opinion), but this game clearly has a different setting; one that isn't a haunted music industry filled with a strange mix of knights from distant realms and budding popstars.
I imagine it'll have quite a different vibe to it (though... modern day Tokyo makes a return in a seemingly bleaker form).
Mega hype! The Switch games just keep comin'.
I'm pretty sure they announced it for Switch long time ago.
Awesome!
That moment when you forget SMT isn't Persona, and think Switch is getting a port of P5.
God news just keeps coming...
@Spike6958
This will likely be every bit as good as Persona 5, maybe even better. It looks like it's pushing new boundaries on current gen HD hardware just like Persona 5 did. And as much as I love Persona there are quite a few irritating things about the game, specifically pertaining to the whole high school setting. Granted, SMT also has a few irritating things about it too (namely its high difficulty early on for newcomers, although it's not that much more difficult than Persona), but I think they equal out in the end.
Yes!!!!! What wonderful news! I was hoping it would be a main entry in the series, and not a spinoff!
Very much looking forward to this, Octopath Traveler and of course Xenoblade. I hope this is jus the start of a strong jRPG resurgence
Announcements like this never hurt!
I didn't like SMT IV. Tried it a few times but just couldn't get into it at all. I'm open to potentially giving the series another go though so I'll keep an eye on this one.
Might get this. Glad it’s coming to the Switch
SMT V looks great. The footage is giving me Nocturne vibes!
@Maxz TMS is pretty much nothing like mainline SMT. The spell names are similar, and I think Jack Frost shows up in advertising... that's about it. Otherwise the two properies are about as night and day as you can get.
@Kimyonaakuma @Sanicranfast Thanks! I already had an idea of what I'd be getting into in terms of theming, but now I'm excited to get into it!
Nitpicking here, and I get that this is just early teaser footage, but the animation looks terrible in the segment between 00:13 and 00:25! Why don't they use motion capture or something... I guess it's a question of budget?
Yes!!!!
I just want snowboard kids 3
Saw it early this morning! This is great! Now that I know it is in fact SMT V, it's time for me to preorder it asap and then block off all new news about the game. I want to be as surprised as possible.
@Darkhound1999 No problem, enjoy it!
And as @Sanicranfast said, SMT IV is probably a good start as the plot twist has a bigger effect for newcomers. It was also made to be more accessible for new players. After that you'll still have Apocalypse and Strange Journey Redux is coming out next year.
-you might even have enough SMT to last until V comes out, I'm slightly jealous now...
It won't come close to Persona 5, but I'll be looking forward to this.
@Menchi187 It's a main game so it'll definitely be better than anything Persona.
This is fantastic news since it confirms that the mainline SMT series is still doing well and supporting Nintendo. It's also worth noting that this is the first time we'll be able to play a main entry in the series on home console since SMT Nocturne on PS2 all the way back in 2003! If this is indeed exclusive for Switch, I'm worried that they'll be missing an opportunity to intrigue the Persona fan base that they've grown after Persona 5.
Speaking of which, if anyone is interested in getting into the series, there are other options besides the obvious SMT IV. Apocalypse, although a direct sequel, has a bit more of a Persona tone to it and fixes a lot of problems with the original and does a good enough job filling in first time players of the original's story.
Devil Survivor Overclocked on 3DS, although technically a SRPG, does a great job introducing the main series mechanics like Demon Fusion, moral choices, and multiple routes based on your alignment, while blending the darker and more urgent tone of SMT with a group of friends you will get to know and trust (or not trust)
And finally, if you have a PS3 lying around, there's always the Digital Devil Saga on PSN. This forgoes Demon Fusion for a more traditional JRPG take on the series with a great story, cast of characters, and one of the strongest versions of the combat system to date! If anyone is interested in getting into this series and has any questions, please let me know. I'd be happy to help.
@Menchi187 I dunno man, as several others have said, this trailer is rockin some huge Nocturne vibes. This game could be a big deal.
@retro_player_22 Considering that almost all Persona games are better than main series SMT, no, it won't be.
@retro_player_22 @Menchi187 Guy's let's play the wait and see game on this one. Persona and SMT have different things to offer to different people. It's all personal taste. That being said, Apocalypse shows that they're definitely experimenting with making the main series appeal a bit more towards Persona fans so this should be interesting to see what they do with V. Just enjoy it
Animations look like garbage, but I'm very excited to see a mainline SMT game as a switch exclusive. Here's to hoping they put a lot of effort and work into making this a REALLY good game.
Is this not the SMT game unveiled at the Switch reveal event?
@ottospooky It is but at the time we didn't know what that was going to be. It's nice to get confirmation that it's the next entry in the series and not a remake or side game.
@Darkhound1999 same here.
Didn't they confirm SMT V for Switch at that Nintendo Switch event at the start of this year already?
@Luffymcduck It wasn't officially announced as SMT V then so we didn't actually know what it was going to be other than a part of SMT. It could have been a remake or side game.
woot!... 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim + SMT V... good times from Atlus!
Y'know...just when you think you can't love the Switch anymore...
Considering I thought Shin Megami Tensei IV was pretty darn good, it is safe to say I am stoked for the next entry. The dated hardware of the Nintendo 3DS held back the game a fair bit, so I am very interested in seeing how they handle the Nintendo Switch!
@Darkhound1999 SMT 4A is also amazing, I highly recommend it, although it will spoil a bit of SMT 4.
my favourite rpg series. this will be godly
Hoping that this is the beginning of a beautiful trend of lots of quality RPGs to experience on this system. Can’t wait to play this.
Yay, Atlus is finally starting to develop for the Switch!
I'm pretty sure this was announced in the Switch event at the beginning of the year...
Wasn't this announced at the Switch reveal presentation?
I hope this is just the start of Atlus games on the Switch. In my opinion, they were the unsung heroes of both the DS and 3DS. So many quality JRPG's.
Thouhht this was confirmed during the reveal of the switch games in March
@joealejos They didn't confirm it was V. Just said a SMT was switch bound. (honestly I'd thought they were going to port 4 and 4:A until I got the switch in hand and saw its power first hand)
@BenAV Same here.
Absolutely day one
@Menchi187 according to whom? Yourself? Please ...
@Equinox I agree completely.
Hell to the yeah. This is going to be in my collection for sure. A physical purchase for sure. I hope to get a collectors edition if available.
Another good entry to start with is the upcoming SMT: Strange Journey Redux. The original was amazing. My favorite SMT title along with SMT: Digital Devil Saga on PS2.
A series that has been on my radar for a while but I have never played. Would I have had to play the first 4 to understand this? Or is it like Final Fantasy where every one is it's own story?
Love Persona games cause they are character driven, got social and dating elements and got other cool features. Not a SMT fan per se.
Yes, this is one of the games I would want an NS for... This probably won't release with full localization for at least another couple of years. I'll hold off on getting an NS at least until then. Hopefully the next SKU will be on it's way by then, as well! Definitely looking forward to it! Until then, it's all retro and PC for me.
@Boopero ...How about that Sector E? Strange Journey is pretty damn rough for a total newcomer, it's not easy at all, especially compared to the more popular Persona series. I would say Digital Devil Saga 1/2, SMT4/A or even Soul Hackers are better entry points for complete newcomers.
You're right. Strange Journey is pretty brutal. Guess I've played too many SMT games and didn't really think about it.
@Menchi187 The Persona series from 3 onwards is so different from mainline SMT (and even other spinoff series) that it's very difficult to draw direct comparisons, at least beyond shared demons/personae. They're both RPG series, and... that's where the similarities end. One isn't necessarily better than the other, they have different merits.
However, there is one significant comparison: the Persona series is a lot simpler and easier than mainline. I really enjoyed watching a Youtuber named NicoB play through Persona 5... But I don't think I would actually want to play it for myself. To be honest, the Persona series is something I think is more fun to watch someone else play who's really excited and animated about how the characters interact with each other, while mainline is more fun to play for yourself, since it's more complex and requires more thought.
Will definitely purchase. Hopefully it is a bit more engaging than SMTIV though. I will endeavour to finish IV at some point, because I know it will get better, but I feel more obligated to playing it than actively enjoying it. I think the early game difficulty put me off, especially since I was too stubborn to downgrade to easy mode.
Day one for me! It'll be my first game in the series. Never played it before and I can't wait!
@RailX Welcome to NL! If you follow certain builds, SMT4 actually gets easier as it progresses, with a few scattered difficulty spikes on certain fights. (3Dex/1Agi/1Luk for Melee (replace Dex with Str in Apocalypse), 1Dex/1Agi/3Luk for Gunner (max crit rate for smirking is better than higher raw damage for multishots), or 3Mag/1Agi/1Luk for Mage (most everything except certain bosses become a joke once you know weaknesses and go over 100 Mag right before lvl 30)
Excellent news! It's likely still over a year until it actually comes out in answhere, but that's ok. In the meantime, i'll play Xenoblade 2, Project Octpath Traveler and probably Dragon Quest XI on my Switch.
@PlywoodStick Thanks mate. Been lurking here for a while but avoided commenting after being put off by Kotaku's toxic comments section.
Most people here seem pretty good.
I enjoyed P4G a few years ago, only put about 60hrs in, which is not much compared to most, but I do love the setting of SMT, just need to get used to the different mechanics.
I love the SMT series, SMT IV and Apocalypse were amazing too. Day one buy for me!
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!
This is the #1 reason why I want a Switch and I can't wait to see more.
And, the pale-skinned characters, the snazzy suit on our likely new MC; could this possibly be Kaneko's glorious return to the helm of the art team?
Wasn't SMT3 the only main SMT that WASN'T on a Nintendo console?
(okay the ENGLISH version of SMT1 wasn't, sadly)
SHIN SHIN ROGAN!
Yeah, I am beyond hyped for this.
Can't wait!! My First Shin Megami Tensei Game was Part 4 on the 3DS and it was a fun and Awesome JRPG 😁 Can't wait for More Info for Part 5 😄
Glad to see so much support for SMT5, I might even give it a whirl if I get the chance but the main games have always been too difficult and serious for me. I prefer the social aspects, lighthearted humor and 'day in the life' nature of the Persona games so I'm hoping for something that scratches that itch... On SWITCH!
I’ve been living in Japan for almost 14 years and I don’t even know what kind of game is this...
I might need to check some videos of previous entries to see what’s all about...
Theres no way this isnt coming to the West right?
Yassss!
Now we're talking! I am hoping for a Nocturne vibe.
Strange Journey got me into this franchise, loved it ever since, really looking forward to V!
This looks amazing. The new 3D demons look way more detailed than their Nocturne counterparts.
Guess its time to finally finish my last run of SMT4 and get to work on Apocalypse.
That looks really interesting.
@BensonUii I can second this I never got round to buying it for Wii U and am now regretting it
Yeees!
Not that we didn't already know this, but it was still considered "unconfirmed" that "Unannounced SMT Title" really meant SMTV even though it was pretty obvious it was.
We don't know for sure if it's being localized. The old NoA Switch page at Nintendo listed it as "TBD" for the release date under the "Unannounced SMT Title" heading, but since they revamped the page with all the recent/pending releases that "TBD" stuff has all been removed (or updated with release dates such as Skyrim.)
That said it was originally there, was part of the world premeire for Switch, and I can't recall an SMT or EO game that WASN'T localized in recent years. Combined with the huge sales of Persona 5 in the West, it's a fair certainty that if they're making the game, they're localizing the game. Atlus localization lags by some time since their games are so text heavy so I'd expect nothing sooner than Holiday here. But still this is HUUUGE.
Huger than it used to be post-P5. TMS#FE remains one of my all time favorite games.....but I still have P5 in shrink wrap due too it not being on Switch...haven't had the patience to pick up PS4 since March 3.
Is it better than that fire emblem crossover? The characters never grabbed me and I really hated the side character missions and relationship thing
Can i just sleep till this game has been released
@Juma009 Nocturne and Shin Megami Tensei IV made it so I don't see why this won't. Even the alternate darker story SMTIV: Apocalypse also made it as well as last year's Tokyo Mirage Sessions which is basically Shin Megami Tensei with a sprinkles of Fire Emblem add to the mix.
