Re: Razer's New Gaming Tablet Is One Of The Most Blatant Nintendo Switch Clones Yet

@Woomy_NNYes Putting buttons on things makes them toys, 'phones are status symbols. There is a stigma to playing games that you can overcome with touch-screens because it is their secondary purpose.

If you see someone at a train-station playing Candy Crush they are taking a quick break from executive calls and number crunching.

If they are playing a dedicated gaming device they are a nerd.

Re: Nintendo Tells Mobile Partners To Limit Microtransactions So That Players Don't Spend Too Much

BumpkinRich

@Trajan That the current business model is not sustainable. The rise of micro transactions over the last 5 years has seen massive profit growth which is expected to grow. This cannot happen. Games cannot continue to make more and more money.

Look at Activision, destroying any good will left for Call of Duty by hiding a full price game (+ full price season pass) behind FIVE different ways of buying micro transactions. Then announcing record profits , then laying off 8% of its staff because those profits aren't enough to keep the investors interested.

Nintendo are saying that short term gain is not worth the long term damage actions like that cause. Nintendos investors wanted staff cuts after the launch of the 3DS and Wii U - instead Satoru Iwata (and other management) took a pay cut to protect the staff because he knew that would not lead to great games. Nintendo didn't turn to micro-transactions - they made Breath of the Wild.

@Pod NIntendo seem to be one of the few game publishers who are thinking ahead. Currently both the AAA and mobile market are in free fall with ever increasing releases demanding more time and money. It's not sustainable.

While I'm often critical of Nintendo not following the crowd when it comes to online I am very grateful that they still consider that their number one priority is to make great games that will get people to come back again and again rather than the smash and grab approach being followed by other publishers.

Re: Rumour: Microsoft Plans To Bring Xbox App And Game Pass To Nintendo Switch

BumpkinRich

If there is anything to these rumours it suggests to me that Microsoft want their service on every device. That makes sense as their services are generally platform agnostic.

If streaming does become a thing, and everything suggests it will, then there is little point in owning a 3 streaming boxes. You dont have a netflix, amazon, hulu box as it would be a barrier to that all important monthy revenue.

Re: Trials Rising On Switch Doesn't Rise Up To The Challenge Of Its Rivals

BumpkinRich

@mattmayatt I tried a few levels and won't be getting it on Switch, which is a real shame as I was looking forward to it being my lunch time game. One level set on a spooky rollercoaster felt awfully choppy when lighting effects came in.

I also have real concerns about the lack of a analogue trigger with trials.

How is the Switch version going to contend with user generated content - which is always a fun part of trials. If it's created on a PS4 or XBone , requires slow acceleration and has a bunch of effects it will be unplayable on the switch.

Re: Random: Epic Games Sues After Unofficial Fortnite Event Sullies The Brand

BumpkinRich

@invictus4000 I'm with you. I'm part of a few groups and some of them really like to hate on Fortnite - to the point where people were getting bans for being so abusive about people posting questions about Fortnite.

I find it especially odd here in a Nintendo based site because I find that Nintendo games are often accused of being 'for kids'.

If you don't like a game and it's not harming anyone why comment?

Re: Nintendo Really Wants You To Use A Wired Connection For Smash Bros. Ultimate

BumpkinRich

@Varelius I know what the limitations are and I know it would be better wired. All my consoles are wired despite the router being in the same room for this reason.

However, Nintendo are running a 4 player fighting game peer to peer. So even if the 3 clients are wired they are not going to have an optimal experience. This is a problem that can be overcome.

I know dedicated servers are not the fix most think they are but Smash is going to come with all the same disconnection issues that all their games do. Again, something that Nintendo could address.

And that this is their first online game after starting to charge, asking people to plug LAN cables in is mad and embarrassing. Mention it on the FAQs maybe but as part of the direct. Most people havent plugged in a LAN cable in 10 years.

Re: Nintendo Really Wants You To Use A Wired Connection For Smash Bros. Ultimate

BumpkinRich

@Varelius I think @Arpie is correct that this is an issue that Nintendo should overcome.

I've not come across another game in the last 10 years that has recommended you connect via LAN.

I strongly suspect the reason for this is because they continue to use peer to peer hosting and now they are charging for the online service everyone being affected by the hosts connection will not be acceptable.

Re: Review: 7 Billion Humans - A Fine Programming-Puzzler, If You've Got The Head For It

BumpkinRich

@NintendoFan4Lyf Talking about the first one, I've been a developer for the last 20 years and really enjoyed it. There are so few operations and memory locations available that it really makes you think.

As @chardir says you'll have a head start because you'll know some abstract concepts like looping and subroutines but the game does not dwell on these.

As I say, I can't give an opinion on this one but I will say it'll be on my wish list.
