If various rumours over the last year or so are to be believed, it seems Konami may well be on its way to a bit of a resurgence. After partially stepping away from the console market and leaving some of its key franchises lying dormant, the publisher is apparently looking to revive major IP like Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania, and Silent Hill.
Now, it looks like Konami may be gearing up to launch a brand new remastered collection for Metal Gear Solid, encompassing the original Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
The news comes from VGC and subsequently backed up by known leaker AestheticGamer. AestheticGamer states that the possibility of a new remastered collection is "100% true" and that the three games will be available separately or as a bundle. He also suggests that the collection is planned for "higher-res" consoles, which may rule out the Switch, but also states that the collection will come to "pretty much everything" when responding to a user question.
To play devil's advocate for a moment, however, we need to remember that the official Metal Gear Solid Twitter page recently stated that it's planning on resuming sales for MGS titles that were temporarily delisted; this includes the current remasters of MGS2 and MGS3, along with Snake Eater 3D on the 3DS. One ought to wonder why Konami would even bother if it's planning to release a brand new collection. Something to ponder, perhaps.
Regardless of whether this is true or not, we're certainly keen on seeing the original Metal Gear Solid trilogy on the Switch at some point (yeah, let's throw Guns of the Patriots in there too - why not). Hideo Kojima's stealth franchise is a bonafide masterpiece, and certainly a massive influence on many of the games we play today.
Do you think we'll see the Metal Gear Solid series on the Switch at some point? Let us know - our codec is 140.85. Good luck, Snake.

Beautiful image btw
I'd buy this immediately, even though I have access to 1 - 3 on my Vita. Would be great if we could rescue Metal Gear Solid 4 from the PS3 and Acid 1 & 2 from the PSP, too. This series is too awesome to not be available on modern systems in its entirety.
I'd love the chance to fission mail again.
Oh please Konami, let my dream come true and Bring MGS to Switch!!!!!
I'll believe when I see it. It feels like I've seen rumors relating to Konami remembering they own MGS for years now. If true though, then awesome!
Longer time goes on, the less reason I have to keep my Vita around...the original trilogy on a cartridge would be a Day 1 purchase for me. As would anything with SotN on it.
A remaster to surpass HD Collection? Let's hope so!
Never got around to playing them all, so this is rather welcome news.
No Konami, I want Goemon!
Kojima and Konami are on speaking terms. I wonder if they asked him to come back for these rumoured remasters.
Now this would be a pretty hype Direct announcement.
@hel105 The Vita collection with 2 and 3 plus the MSX originals is probably the best reason to own a Vita.
With my 3ds themes set on random and the Snake Eater one being among the options, I often get that urge to replay MGS3. It may be instrumental only, but when being greeted by the MGS3 theme song upon opening the 3ds, it's hard to NOT wish they'd make a Switch MGS collection already, with ALL of them in there, ALSO Twin Snakes in HD, and the later ones (after 4) I didn't play yet. But cut off just BEFORE Survive. I'm really quite sure I don't want that to take up space or raise the cost of the collection.
"put your joy cons on the floor..." (moves both separately)
"did you enjoy playing Eternal Darkness HD Remaster?"
(can't predict your moves when you switch from handheld to tv mode or vice versa)
Yes. I'm all set and ready for disappointment with these expectations.
Already have MGS 2 & 3 for XB1, but if a remastered MGS1 is available separately I'll definitely jump on it!
@Znake and all 3 ,4 5
Very cool if true. I have 2 and 3 on PS2, but have wanted to play the first one again for awhile now, and it's pretty hard to find these days.
So, Metal Gear Solid Collection when...?
Can't wait for the dumb Kojima fanboys to "boycott" this as the games sell very well and Kojima is ready to announce at the game awards he's now got a BOOK COMING, Please Subscribe!
😂
I believe the reason why they haven't released a new collection of the MGS games is because of the copyrighted material on them. Now, since that have renewed the licenses on the games, Konami must be prepping something. I wouldn't get my hopes up, but man, if they do, I'd buy it day one. He'll, I'd even buy V if it came to the Switch. Hopefully, if they really release a collection, it should include Guns of the Patriots.
Here's my idea for a multi-volume Metal Gear collection.
Metal Gear Solid: The Original Trilogy
Metal Gear Solid: The Future Collection
Metal Gear Solid V: The Ultimate Experience (basically The Definitive Experience but with Metal Gear Survive included for free)
The idea here is to include every single Metal Gear game, regardless of canonicity and actual involvement from Kojima, as he's out of the picture now. It may be nice if they could have an agreement with Kojima to use his name and company logo for promotion)
A single collection having everything would be impossible unless it was a box set containing multiple discs and cartridges, but it would be nice if they did have a box set.
@Arisu1983 I'm sure Komoney cares enough about everyone's nami. And I don't think a new project for PS5 is the best way to make that right now, when they can just update existing games to satisfy a much bigger market.
@ModdedInkling doubtful. Konami owns Metal Gear completely, so they wouldn’t need Kojima’s permission for anything they do with the franchise.
I've grown too cynical to believe Metal Gear will come to the Switch. Prove me wrong konami.
I thought Konami abandoned Metal Gear, Castlevania and Silent Hill to focus more on Yu-Gi-Oh games lol. I understand they want to release these games again with improve graphics and resolution but I doubt they would want to leave out Switch.
If the best that Konami can do in this day and age is port and remaster their old classics, I suppose it's better than nothing, but I wish they didn't burn so many bridges with the creators that made them, like Koji Igarashi and Hideo Kojima, so we could get new entries in their beloved series, and not have to worry that the next Metal Gear game will be another Survive.
@Hydra_Spectre only one that would be a giant problem is MGS4. It’s very tricky to emulate (like many other PS3 games) and is a monster on the coding end. It’s one of the few games that was built from the ground up to take advantage of the PS3. Most modern machines (PCs included) don’t have certain features of the Cell Broadband chipset. Yes, Cell is derived from the 970 (Xbox 360 and Apple’s G5), but Sony, IBM and Toshiba sought to build an exclusive entertainment platform with it. How the processor handles instructions between the CPU and GPU are unique to the system itself is still hard for emulating community to figure out effectively.
MGS4 could one day be played again outside of a PS3, but until then it’s stuck there. Rebuilding the game would be an option, but I don’t know how specific or what makes it specially coded to PS3’s hardware that would trip up the game on modern devices.
Still hoping for more Castlevania. Controversial, I know, but I love the first Castlevania LoS and Mirror of Fate.
@eltomo Yeah, I LOVE Goemon! Mystical Ninja 64 is one of my all-time favorites. Still, I'd like to see Konami come back with anything - all of their old franchises are good.
@Vriess Oh, I wouldn't say that's controversial; they're both pretty great in their own way. Not a patch on the likes of Symphony of the Night and Aria of Sorrow, mind, but still.
I'd probably be doing Twin Snakes instead of the original and trying to include 4 since it's probably the hardest one to get ahold of at this point.
Though what I really want are good ports of Silent Hill 2, 3, and Shattered Memories.
Whatever they do here I just hope the collection retain all the games the way they originally were while adding modern quality of life features to em with better graphical enhancements and performance option similar to the Cowabunga Collection.
MSG Collection, Cloud Edition confirmed!!! Where NFTs unlock different games so only one person can play them at a time.
Kidding (hopefully) just give us Goemon remake please
@SearchingS they could do one large Omega Collection of MG1/MG2/MGS1-V, or make one collection of MG1-2/MGS1-3 on one collection, and MGS4, Peace Walker and V. To make it more cohesive, I would makeMGS 3, Peace Walker, Ground Zeroes and V on one Story Collection and Snake Saga (MG1-2,MGS1-4). What do you guys think?
@Bunkerneath Even Goemon Mystical Ninja on N64 NSO would be great!
@Krysus Traded my vita in to get a Switch back in 2017. It had some good games and I loved the console itself, but sadly there wasn't much reason to keep it once I'd played through its handful of decent exclusives. Great little console, a real shame it didn't take off.
I played through 1 and 2 back in the day and loved them but for me they are a kind of one and done thing. Super big win for the Switch though if this is true!
@hel105 Don't forget Peacewalker. I was always dark that the Vita didn't get the HD version.
@Krysus I keep it around, because I regret every console that I've sold.
@Znake i will happy to see this collection coming
@progx Doh! I've played most of them, to some degree, except for mgs 4.
This is a series of games that I have never jumped in to. However, I was recently kind of wishing for them to come to the Switch so that I could give them a go. I'm really hoping this rumor is true.
I've really been hoping for an MGS collection on Switch after I saw Snake return for Smash Ultimate and it would be a crying shame if there were no MGS games to accompany him being on a console where he came back for a crossover game.
That being said, however, I'm kind of concerned if these remastered releases if they'll edit out Hideo Kojima's name out of the credits, because we know about Konami's long-standing grudge with him after he left.
@russell-marlow A valid concern, to be sure, but it's unlikely Konami would do that. It edited Kojima's name out of certain marketing materials for The Phantom Pain, but his name was all over the in-game credits, near enough after every single mission.
@Edu23XWiiU Neither MGSV nor Guns of the Patriots will ever be re-released on modern consoles because of how the online component of MGSV, that being the F.O.B. missions and Metal Gear Online multiplayer, is directly tied to story/gameplay progression in some ways and I doubt they will carry that over to modern consoles because that would also mean they would have to create new servers for already mentioned online components.
MGS4 being a PS3 exclusive would be very difficult to port over due to the architecture of the PS3 being really complicated, which wouldn't be worth it for them to spend that much time or money trying to port that game in the first place.
I would love a remake...
@Olliemar28 We never know, it's a Japanese business thing and I remember recently how Sonic creator Yuji Naka edited out Naoto Ohshima out of a photo of them in the Balan Wonderworld team for undisclosed reasons as too why and it really makes me question the attitudes business partners have over there and what's considered "normal" compared to here. Because it should be apparently obvious how different business culture is over there.
Man I am so tired of hearing Konami say 'Its impossible to ever port MGS4'. First off they could just build a new engine for it on modern hardware (or use the MGS5 engine), then they could update and re-use all the texture and audio assets. Would it be a project....yes....but this game never fully got the love it deserved being tethered to the PS3. I believe it sold around 6M units which was very good for an exclusive but if they ported it x86 then they could sell it to the ps4/ps5/xb1/xbs:x and PC market. Surely it would be worth the effort. Konami in general has just acted stupid in the last decade. The hold some of the most iconic franchises in gaming history and all they can do is put out emulated re-hashes like the Castlevania GBA collection. Apparently they hate money. Why not a new 3D CV game, or how about a full redo of the always beloved SOTN? Whatever they do I have a feeling it will be underwhelming because that's their track record in the last 10yrs.
@Vriess @Olliemar28 I agree, they are great games and they deserve some more love.
If these games come to Switch, then I think everyone in Smash Bros Ultimate finally will have their games on the system.
I’d be more interested in ports of MGS4 and whatever came after that (cuz 4 was better than 2 and 3, but I missed what came after that)
I’ve only played 4 and I loved it so much. The online was so good too. I loved the cinematics and was not prepared for the final one basically being a movie but luckily I was able to enjoy all of it without some family interruption at the time. That game and new Vegas were ps3 high points for me. Loved that console. Anyway would definitely buy a collection to experience more of the series
These great games need to be made available again. Hopefully we get a volume 2 with peace walker, 4, and 5. I actually really liked 5 a lot, and loved the buddy system and the whole Fulton recovering soldiers and war machines to fortify your base was really cool. There’s never been a game quite like metal gear, Sam fisher was a great effort tho.
@Ryan_Again Bold words right there! 4 was great, but I personally wouldn't put it above 2 or 3.
I get it. My opinion doesn’t invalidate yours. We can both be right. For me, 2 and 3 were fun but the story and presentation was mostly meaningless. 4 recaptured the magic of 1, for me. Transcendent, nearly.
...I didn't like MGS2 and haven't played 3. Am I still welcome? It's a Nintendo site, right? Should be okay I would have thought.
The metal gear solid games are one such series I will buy on every platform everytime...
@GrailUK I played 3 when I was in highschool probably a couple years after it came out and the story and feelings I had playing that game have stuck with me far longer and affected me deeply more than any game I can remember playing since, not sure how it will hold up depending on the remaster since the controls are a bit dated
@Znake unfortunately unless they rebuild mgs4 from the ground up its not gonna come to any other system other than the ps3
That would be just too much. This machine is getting close to having pretty much every great classic game ever made. What kind of hedonistic timeline is this!
It mgs 4 we need damn it! That's been trapped on the PS3 ever since it released!
Remastered 1-3 on one disc/cartridge would be VERY enticing!!
Finally Metal Gear on Switch, hopefully. I also want to state how great it feels, as someone who became a hardcore MGS fan through Smash Bros, that Metal Gear is being reported on Nintendolife and not just Push Square
Anybody else getting Mini/Partner Showcase vibes from all these rumors?
I sadly doubt they’ll hit the Switch with Konami being Konami, but I’ll be pleasantly surprised if they do.
What a thrill
It would be nice to get this potential collection on switch. It needs to include MGS 4 too at least. Will MGS 4 or even 5 run on switch?
@Truegamer79 The Switch is proven to be more powerful than the Wii U, which is more powerful than PS360, so MGSV can definitely run well on Switch.
As for MGS4, its code is extremely complex so it may be hard to be reconstructed for any modern platforms, not just the Switch.
Come on. Bring back the Twin Snakes.
@Deady Climb that ladder Snake, climb that ladder.
@HollowSpectre you can thank Sony’s choice in designing exclusive hardware, Cell and the PowerPC 970 in the Xbox 360 are not the same.
@hydra_spectre the Switch is more powerful and efficient, but due to the unique specs of the PS3, MGS4 is stuck. High end PCs struggle with emulating certain PS3 games. It had 128-bit data channels, 8-cores that had some funky operation between the CPU and GPU which had separate memory controllers. Kojima coded MGS4 to take FULL advantage of the PS3, it was one of the few exclusives completely built for it.
Someday, someone will figure it out and (hopefully) Konami will have it available everywhere.
@progx Yeah. But they won't be releasing a plain emulation of the game, they must do a remaster from the original source code (or reverse-engineering the original game).
Hell, if MGS4 cannot be on Switch, then it probably won't be on PS4 and Xbox One either.
MGSV can definitely run on the Switch. With better performance and graphics than the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, but not quite as good as the PS4 and Xbox One versions.
I was there when all thee first came out. I'd say 2 is the best.
@ParadoxFawkes I miss MgS4, they should just rebuild it. It’s still just a ps3 game and all their assets are in. Hope this game get rereleased.
MGS 1-4 and Peace Walker would be perfect for me. No Portable Ops.
"it can't be!", What a Solid selection of games. If Konami do, it would be welcome on Switch too.
I liked what they did with MGS 3D, adding in the crouch creep really changed the game, so an option to have that in 3 at least would be great.
Just port the twin snakes GameCube game to switch, up the res and I’d be happy
This is a sneaking mission. Procurement on site.
Why can't they just port the ps3 mgs collection for Switch? Or release this new one with lower (1080p) resolution (meaning lower compared to 4k where they must be aiming?)
Almost as of some people forgot Switch is a HD console. Despite not doing ultra 4k HD.
@russell-marlow Not long ago, came some news regarding MGS 4's supposed "exclusivity deal" with Sony, and one of the producers of the game mentioned that the only reason why the game was not ported to the Xbox 360 was for space on disc issues. Kojima contemplated doing the port, since there was no deal signed with Sony, or any issues regarding compatibilit between systems, but it was because the game would have to come out on 7 discs or something, and they didn't see that as feasable. The re-release IS possible.
@Edu23XWiiU Sure, but how many people actually want 4?
And I doubt Konami kept the source code for that game, so that really brings down the chances of that game getting ported.
@russell-marlow It's better than V, at least hahahaha.
@Edu23XWiiU You sure about that?
V has the best controls/gunplay while also having the worst boss fights.
@russell-marlow nah, gameplay was better and much more unique in 4. V was trying to emulate other games, and what came up was something not original. And besides, it's incomplete.
