We're back with another review round up, and this week the focus is Nintendo's upcoming first-party release Splatoon 3.
Before we dive into it, we want to first take a moment to mention our own review here on Nintendo Life. We said it was "excellent" - awarding the game 9 out of 10 stars and acknowledging it as the "pinnacle of the series":
Right, with that out of the way, here are what various other outlets thoughts:
The team over at My Nintendo News also gave the third game a solid 9 out of 10, noting how "inkredible" it is, even if it doesn't do much to differentiate itself from its predecessors:
"At its core, Splatoon 3 takes the “if it aint broke don’t fix it” mantra to the best of its abilities, offering an unforgettable experience that’s guaranteed to provide hundreds of hours of fresh, splatastic fun for all ages."
Nintendo Insider also awarded it 9 out of 10, stating how the series feels just as fresh now as it did back on the Wii U:
"There’s still no other game that delivers as refreshing a multiplayer experience quite like Splatoon effortlessly achieves. It feels just as fresh now as it first did back on Wii U, and, while more of the same isn’t necessarily bad when the series’ remains consistently brilliant, new weapons, stages and Boss Salmonid can only freshen up and re-energise the game’s multiplayer modes so far. However, what’s here has been tinkered with and refined to near perfection. Inkling and Octoling stalwarts will approach this threequel with a renewed sense of purpose in wanting to prove that they’re the freshest squid on the block, but it will be the content roadmap that inevitably determines whether Splatsville’s worth sticking around in."
Australian Nintendo website Vooks.net was even more impressed, awarding a perfect score of 5/5:
"Splatoon 3, while more of an evolution than a revolution, is the best the series has ever been. Between an utterly fantastic story mode, some great new weapon additions, and tweaks to the tried and trusted formula you've come to know and love, Splatoon 3 is everything you'd hope it would be and more. Some will say that it's "just more Splatoon", and that's true, but that's far from a bad thing in a series that has been, and continues to be, so consistently strong."
Game Informer was a little less taken with the third game but still glowing with praise - admitting it was the "best entry" and "most promising" delivering a score of 8.5 out of 10:
"Splatoon 3 doesn’t reinvent the wheel, nor does it need to. Instead, it improves nearly every franchise element in sometimes small but meaningful ways. With an already-robust set of content available at launch and at least two years of free and premium content on the horizon, Splatoon 3 is simultaneously the series’ best entry to date and its most promising."
Digital Trends gave it 4 out of 5 stars and enjoyed the fact it was a full experience "out of the gate":
"Splatoon 3 is a game that’s easy to take for granted. It’ll be tempting to write it off as another fun multiplayer game in a crowded sea — and one that costs $60 more than some perfectly playable alternatives. But what the Switch exclusive does here should be the norm, not the exception. It’s a fully formed and carefully constructed game out the gate, rather than a good proof of concept that’ll live and die by the developer’s ability to keep up. It doesn’t build out its world after the fact through supplementary YouTube videos and it doesn’t need to pepper in references to other beloved media to manufacture entertainment. Everything you need to enjoy the experience is there on day one, not hiding in a development roadmap."
And last of all, our friends over at VGC gave the game 3 out of 5 stars. Here's what they had to say:
"While it’s weird to see Nintendo deliver such a safe sequel, there’s no denying the continued pull of Splatoon’s splotchy skirmishes. Seasoned inklings can dive straight in; casual dabblers might find it a bit bare."
Splatoon 3 releases on 9th September. You can find out where to buy the game and amiibo from in our pre-order guide:

These reviews are fair enough. The gaming-focused websites seem to be reviewing the game well, not so much websites with other focuses - somehow we're on the third iteration of a competitive online shooter and there are still people basing their critiques entirely off the single-player content. Amazing.
If you forgot about the similarities to Splatoon 2 and just judged the game in isolation on its own merits, that'd probably add an extra point to most of its review scores. Not that I care about reviews in the first place when it comes to games that I already know I"m going to enjoy.
@Zebetite It's nice Nintendo decide to fix many of their bone headed design decisions but based on all reviews it feels like they didn't really bring anything new to the table. Lower scores probably reflect the sameness. Personally it looks too similar for me to even consider but that seems to be a problem with a lot of their content in recent years...
I just wonder how much VGC wanted the game to change. New graphics, more guns, new story mode, new characters, qol improvements, it sounds like, well, a sequel to me. But that’s there opinion.
@timschel If I can play without chargers shooting me through walls because the shot looked good on their end, that's good enough for me. Splatoon 2 was a mess.
Besides, samey content isn't something Nintendo is uniquely guilty of. If you want truly new ideas and content, you're not going to find it in the AAA space anymore.
The only way for Splatoon to get more critically acclaimed is if you can eat seafood in the game, because cannibalism is RAD!
Disclaimer: Cannibalism isn't rad. Law requires me to say that, I think.
@HotGoomba Actually in 49/50 states here in the U.S. (In Idaho it's illegal), it's technically legal to eat human flesh as long as you didn't kill anyone.
I saw your comment and thought it'd be funny to look up a law about it but I'm mostly just disgusted.
@FroZtedFlake that's not a fact I expected to learn in a splatoon article.
@BenAV The point of a review is to inform an audience on whether or not a game is worth their time, so if it's overly similar to a product they likely already own, that's an important consideration. There's nothing inherently wrong with iterative game series, but if you're not in love with the basic mechanics, it might only be worth picking up every second or third entry.
@Anachronism You can point out those similarities (which should probably go without saying for this sort of game anyway) without going as far as deducting points from the game's score for it though. Feels a bit weird to me to claim that it's an improvement on Splatoon 2 in most areas but at the same time score it lower. Not much point nitpicking over it though I suppose given how little review scores mean to begin with.
It's good that the game is getting good reviews but Splatoon is not my cup of tea. I'll not be picking this one up unfortunately.
@BenAV Mario 64 is one of the most influential games ever made, and is probably still a lot of people's favorite game, but if it released as is for the first time today, it'd rightfully average around a 5 or 6. Context is important, and an essential part of a game's value is how unique and innovative it is compared to other recent games.
Easy skip for now. SPLATOON 2 is still fun and still live af online.
Digital Foundry also just gave a very positive "tech review" of Splatoon 3 and how it's evolved technically since the first one. This one is easily the best looking/running. This will be my first Splatoon full game. Something tells me it's going to be big. Lol 😎
@Zebetite Isn't it funny how Nintendo used to get criticism for only releasing Mario and Zelda but Splatoon is now a Big Dog Nintendo franchise! Phenomenal success and this game is going to sprint on the sales charts. Just you watch folks... 😂
Since I don't have Splatoon 2 and I really loved the Splatfest demo, this is an easy decision for me.
“If it ain’t broke”
I don’t know, a game that doesn’t really offer much we haven’t seen in the previous titles, seems pretty broke to me. The single player part is definitely ‘broke’
Yup, gonna preorder it now 😃
Was definitely expecting it to be a bit more divisive among reviewers (especially with all the 'Splatoon 2.5' rants that have circulated over the past year) so this is a pleasant surprise. This game can't come soon enough.
Missed out Gamespots 7/10
@Fizza this 2.5Gate thing is only doing the rounds with a very small crowd who make a lot of noise. They barely make up 0.01% of the buying public. The vast majority of the buying public had no idea it ever happened, much like any of the other storms in a teacup that happen on these sites.
The best shooter on the switch just got better, thats good enough for me. I will see ya'll in Splatsville at midnight when the preload unlocks
I seriously wonder why people complain about this game's freshness when COD, FIFA, and Pokemon (mostly) annual releases of the same games exist.
This is more than worthy of existing as a sequel, especially considering it's been over 5 years since the last entry's release.
@Mattock1987 Gamespot's review doesn't seem to be complete, the reviewer seems to have played the single-player but only dipped in to the multiplayer so far! I guess that 7 could change?
Such an overrated series for what it is. This is the easiest skip I've ever made. I enjoyed Splatoon 1 and 2 but I've had my fill of shooting paint at people and being truthful the sort of Players I met in Splatoon especially Spawn Campers drove me nuts and just killed it for me.
@Axecon COD existing is exactly why I find the Splatoon situation so weird. For years we have had people complaining about new COD games (much of the mock coming from Nintendo fans no doubt) but when it comes to Splatoon it is suddenly okay to release sequels that barely qualify as games that can stand on their own. I can't help but feel like there is a lot of Nintendo bias at play here.
Either way, I hope the people getting it will enjoy it but I have had my fill of Splatoon with the first two games. Nothing screams "I must play this over the other 2 games" from what I have seen apart from the fact that you are finally able to skip the annoying announcement section upon booting up the game (which is something that shouldn't have taken 3 games to implement to begin with ...)
@MajinSoul CoD sequels started really getting complaints when they cut the story mode entirely and gameplay iteration dropped. Which, thankfully has been reversed (somewhat). But they also release them literally yearly, and the three rotating developers mean that it's not a consistent iteration and improvement. I think people would be a lot kinder to CoD if we only got every fifth game a la Splatoon's release cycle.
At least Splatoon 3 feels significantly improved when playing (based on the demo anyways). Spawning is hugely improved, the netcode appears to be better (I didn't have any wtf deaths, and that seems to be the general consensus), the specials are better than 2s imo, you can practice while waiting for games, etc.
Based on what we've seen and heard, it looks like that improvement will carry over to all modes. It might not be a must play game, but it's still going to easily be at the best option to play Splatoon if you want to play Splatoon.
Sounds like more of the same, but with Splatoon, the same is great! I didn't play Splatoon 2 as much as I did the first one - just too many other things going on, but I still think this will be worthwhile, though I may clear my deck a little before buying it.
Undecided….no doubt this is a great game. I love the franchise/universe, but this game is generally not for me. Just not into the concept. How is the solo campaign? Any idea how long it is?
@RubyCarbuncle We'll miss you ;-;

@Zebetite I love these reviews where people go in, clearly not finding the game’s genre their cup of tea, with the idea that somehow they’ll be blown away by some new feature or something. Only to leave a mixed review simply because they know it’s not a bad game, just not one they’d enjoy playing. That said, single player falling short has forever been a focal point of criticism for splatoon series and sounds like they went for mediocre on this release too. I’m sure a DLC will up the ante like last time.
@FroZtedFlake well what’s eating human flesh? Think of all manner of things humans eat off their body bleck due various fixations. Then there’s things like people cooking and eating the placenta post birth which is considered highly nutritious. Okay I’m going to go throw up now.
@rockodoodle don’t get this game for single player campaign. Def not worth $60.
