We're rather looking forward to Sonic Colors: Ultimate, an anniversary release of a title previously only found on Wii. Just recently SEGA unveiled a new trailer that showcased a variety of new features in the remaster, with visual enhancements and 'rival rush' standing out as intriguing additions.
Nintendo has now uploaded its own version of the trailer, albeit one that appears to use the same footage as the multi-platform SEGA upload. However, one change did catch our eye - the HD Visual Improvements pitch at the start just says 'revamped lighting and improved graphics', deliberately removing a reference to 60fps from the original SEGA version (and 4K resolution, but that was a given). You can see them both below, the original and then the Nintendo upload.
It certainly seems like a very deliberate edit, suggesting it may be a 30fps experience for us on Switch - we'll keep an eye out for any suggestion otherwise.
Not a deal breaker, necessarily, albeit perhaps disappointing for a HD re-work of a Wii game; after all, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD will deliver 60fps. Perhaps the cross-platform development and visual enhancements in Sonic Colors: Ultimate made a stable 60fps too much to ask of Nintendo's hardware.

I play games fine at 30 fps. Sorry, everyone. I've let you down.
@GrailUK it's fine. My favorite game of all time is capped lower than that.
Maybe SEGA was expecting Nintendo to announce the rumoured Switch Pro which turned out to not be the case.
Eh. Can't say I am too surprised. Bit of a bummer though.
30 fps isn't a deal breaker but will say this does highlight even more how a true enhanced model Switch would benefit multi-platform releases like this.
I wish more games especially on Switch would embrace the option of a quality mode or performance mode! I wouldn't mind losing some graphical fidelity or playing at a lower resolution if it means I can get a 60 fps experience!
Hmm, I mean Sonic Forces was 30 FPS too, but also had noticeable visual downgrades compared to the other consoles.
As long as this trailer does faithfully represent the final product on Switch, and isn't simply captured on PC with the frame rate artificially reduced through editing...
I still cannot believe Nintendo can't sell the Skyward Sword remake under 60 usd, seeing how Sega does this for 40. Nintendo might have won the battle back then, and I've been a die-hard fan all this time, but they are slowly becoming something I hate with all their over-priced products and anti-fan practices.
I hope 60 but not a deal breaker. If they can get locked 30 or even steady 40-50 I would be happy.
Woo yeah! 30 Gang rise up!
What was the framerate in the original Wii version?
Interesting how both this and Skyward Sword are updated ports of Wii games, yet one is 60fps on Switch while the other is 30. Then again Sega is developing this for multiple systems, so it's possible they just don't have the time to optimise it for Switch.
This is incredibly lazy to have a freaking Wii game run at 30 fps when the Switch could do 60 fps. There doesn't need to be a Switch Pro to make a Wii game run at 60 fps. The Switcg can do that by itself as seen in Skyward Sword Hd.
"Not a deal breaker, necessarily, albeit perhaps disappointing for a HD re-work of a Wii game; after all, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD will deliver 60fps."
Wow. And Sonic Colors isn't even that graphically demanding right?
@PSoneboi It was a freak of nature that a nintendo console had a gravy train of 3rd party for a while. Nintendo doesn't really care about 3rd party since they own more valuable IPs than anyone.
@Fantasia It was 30fps on Wii.
30fps for Colors Ultimate on Switch is not unexpected, really. Plus it was inferred by product descriptions a while ago that mentioned 60fps specifically on PlayStation and Xbox system. It'll be fine, but also preferable to play it on any other system where it'll be 60fps.
@inenai Agreed, Nintendo gets a free pass on everything solely because people are so okay with nintendo abusing their consumers. It's stunning to me personally.
@Entrr_username @HammerKirby @Abeedo Skyward Sword is running at 60fps but it's also visually the exact same game as the Wii version. Sonic is getting a whole bunch of visual upgrades. It's not laziness, it's just different priorities in design.
Guess this will be a playstation buy for me. Not surprised, I think the switch is harder to port to than most realize.
I also guess I was only planning on playing this docked anyway. Idk handheld might be a bit much to follow on a small screen.
Who needs extra processing power when we're getting a.very slightly larger screen???
@Fantasia 30 FPS on the Wii
I don't care, I'm getting this game no matter what, I have waited over five years to play it and I think that is long enough.
@Grumblevolcano Or, instead of it being "Switch Pro", it was just them showing off the other version on another console? The game's releasing on PS4 and Xbox I'm pretty sure.
The switch pro rumors really need to die. Nintendo already confirmed it doesn't exist with the OLED... but yet youtubers and people still persist that it's coming, despite it not.
Edit: Not to mention, Monster Hunter Stories 2 is another example of this. Instead of showing the version of the game that released on the switch, all the trailers take from the PC version.
probably runs at 30 fps, might get it still but its a Wii game everyone. This game should easily run at 60 fps on the switch.
Heck as much as I hate to admit it, even EA manages their FIFA legacy editions at 60 fps
@inenai
Going in a dollar per frame basis, Sonic is a lesser deal than Zelda 😅
@Indielink Well Skywards been boosted to 1080p. Also the textures for Sonic still look like they came from the wii game, so I'd say they haven't done as much work on it as you think. I did say though that Sonic is multiplatform which means the team has to get the game working on a number of platforms. Likely due to time constraints they didn't have the time to optimise the game to 60fps.
That is interesting. If the switch version is going to run at 30fps then I rather get it on another system that has the 60fps options. Yes I am a fps snob. The only exception where fps doesn't matter to me are games that don't require on the spot reaction times (like turn based games or visual novels).
disappointing if it is 30fps and the other platforms will get 60fps and possibly 120fps
Will just get the PS4 version, was expecting something like this to happen anyway.
@Yomerodes Per frames per second? Not if you buy this on PS4!
I can handle some games at 30fps, but... it really is a little disappointing... especially when a fair number of Switch games DO actually hit 50-60fps. Oh well, I don’t have to buy the ones that don’t really cut it for me.
I already told you guys... It had already been confirmed that the Switch version is 30fps.
Very underwhelming for such an old game. Sonic games play much better at 60fps. Generations was gross on consoles and magnificent on PC. Was going to buy Sonic Colors Ultimate for Switch but nevermind now. Definitely going PC.
@inenai
One is Zelda and most can agree that even bad Zelda games at least okay. Not my opinion just what I have observed. The other is sonic which people seem to like forty percent of the games
@inenai i agree, but recently an unopened mario 64 game was sold for over a million dollars so nintendo knows the value of their ips better than anyone
Some 3ds games could run at 60 FPS. This is very disappointing. That being said I barely noticed the frame rate in age of calamity after five minutes so it will be fine
The blue blur with extra blur in motion. It's fitting.
Pretty ridiculous for a Wii port. 😐 Poor show from SEGA... Even the GameCube's 3D Sonic games ran at 60fps.
@blindsquarel Even some N64 games did like F-Zero X! It even ran in 60fps in multiplayer.
@PSoneboi You know what is even worse? I have a modded switch that I can run overclocked. ( I also modded the cooling and it runs cooler overclocked than it did stock.)
This game (MHS2) and quite a few others that have huge slow downs on switch including first parties do not on my launch day overclocked switch...
They could just optimize the hardware and fix a lot of issues but they don't.
For a Wii remake I really expected 60 fps.
Well, that's s shame.
Not a deal breaker, but disappointing for sure. Might as well play it on other consoles or PC then.
@Dpishere It's not even a remake from what I can see, just a port with some new lighting.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Very true, which makes this even more baffling if it is 30fps. I can't imagine it being the Switch hardware that is the problem.
@WhoaManWtF Interesting. May I ask what kind cooling mod you are referring to? Did you just repaste the thermal paste on the chip or more than that? I was already considering modding my Switch for Smash mods but now I might actually do it if you're saying overclocking is actually viable outside of just benchmarking the difference for fun.
@Merry_Blind I just replaced the stock fan and repasted with some Kryonaut nothing crazy my fan was being a little loud anyways so if your fan is fine you should be good with just the Kryonaut. I have honestly not bothered with the Android mod or running synthetic benchmarks but I have watched the unit temperatures and compared stock to non. The performance claims unfortunately I only have my eyes and word to back that up but there is a huge different and it does not seem to trigger any throttling so it is maintained performance gains.
Be aware though with mods you do lose your online gameplay, a lot of people well tell you that you can do this and that and stay online and not risk a ban. I tell everyone that you will get banned eventually being on a modded console, if you play online don't do it. (At least not with your only and main console.)
They can certainly get it to 60fps on Switch if they try. Skyward sword's gonna be 60fps, Mario 3D World and Odyssey are 60fps. Come on Sega!
No Colors Ultimate at 60fps, no dice. I was gonna give it a shot, but it'll be a hard pass
@Merry_Blind @Dpishere
Agreed. Sonic games need to be 60 fps
@WhoaManWtF Awesome, thanks for the info! I'll look into it in details next time I play a game with performance issues or aggressive dynamic resolution.
@inenai I too am trying to process that price point for Skyward Sword, compared to Colors. Both remasters will have quality of life additions. Nintendo just has a thing for full price titles. With Sega offering a title at a lower cost, but still has promise. Wild to know both titles were released within the same time frame back on the Wii
I'll still be picking this up for my Nintendo Switch, as that's my main console anyways.
This is what I was expecting and makes sense given it’s not a first-party title… also I’m sure the improved visuals, resolution, and lighting are the main culprit. I’ll be picking this up on my PS4 Pro or PC… not sure which yet. I usually sport for physical copies of games but the digital bonuses seem better than that lame Baby Sonic keychain lol.
Wah wah wahhhhh 👎 It seems like every second Switch game released is compromised and struggles to keep up.
I've just about had enough of it.
PC version it is then (plus I want 4k60fps)........oh that's right, I'll be waiting another year to play on the PC platform I prefer anyway.....
Pretty damn good, Sega.....
@Kadosho One's from Nintendo & came up with a whole new way to play it, so I'm sure there was more effort put into it. Also, Nintendo probably feels it would cheapen the brand to sell it for any less, knowing them.
@PSoneboi too bad they won't implement Bluetooth audio so i wouldn't have to buy some small external speakers for the monitor i have & could use (no PC anymore). Otherwise, i hooked it up to the monitor w an adapter to VGA, but there's no sound unless i run a wired headset 😔. I agree the smaller screen looks much better tho. I have a smaller 43" tv & it looks bad since i have my ps4 & x1 also hooked up there & it's hard not to compare them. I would leave it on the monitor i have it it had speakers, or Bluetooth audio.
Good thing I planned to get this on PS4 then. 30fps usually isn't much of an issue for me but for Sonic and racing games (and even Sonic racing games!) I much prefer the smoothness of 60fps. Might even get it on PC depending on how good my gpu can make the game look.
@The_New_Butler Yup, after watching PC game benchmarks for a while AVG FPS is kind of worthless now.
I saw a video where DMC5 on PS5 was supposedly on 120 fps mode (8.33 ms) and did get that on "AVG" ...but it often had dips to around 35 fps (28.6 ms). That's a lot more noticeable than say dropping from 30 to 20 fps. Any frame time consistency drop of more than 8 ms difference is noticeable to most players.
Then we have Switch with Hyrule Warrior AOC....where I heard it just runs poorly in general.
@Abeedo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgiS9xrbg6Q
It's not just a visual upgrade. Metal Sonic races in the levels, re-orchestrated music, upgrades/unlockable skins, new Wisp power (Jade Ghost), and a Tails save for new players if needed.
@FlameRunnerFast True average frame rate does not mean much. Frame times stability is way more important. That's why it's usually recommended to cap the frame rate at a lower but stable frame rate.
Well, this confirms that I'll be getting Sonic Colors on a non-Nintendo console. Oh well.
Yikes guess I can't play it on switch don't know how anyone can play at 30 looks like a ***** slideshow
Yes, it's been known the whole time that 60fps is only for Xbox and PS4. If you'd read the description of the game on literally any online shop, you'd see it mentioned.
@YoungLink64 Not half the load times though! We get double the load times, half the frame rate! oof! I love playing my Switch, and I'd love a Switch Pro that has SSD loadtimes like my laptop and higher frame rates like my laptop (although I know a Switch Pro won't perform like a mobile 3060.
@The_New_Butler Wow that threw me for a loop. I've met AOC, and donated to her campaign, so those initials immediately bring her to mind. I often forget about the other AOC cuz I skipped it due to the trashy frame rate(Fire Emblem Warriors is great docked, so they could've done it, oh well).
I play my Switch almost exclusively. I just like it better than any other platform. So when this kind of thing happens I often skip the game completely. Yeah, I'd like to play this at 60fps, but I probably won't bother since I'd have to get it for my PS4 Pro or laptop. Oh well, there's plenty of other games I want to play.
It may be able to do 40 fps on the Switch.
Bit of a shame, but at least they’re upfront about it. I’ll still buy it for the Switch though since it’s not a dealbreaker for me.
@HammerKirby The Zelda hd rerelease is much slower and has a much lower rendering budget. Sonic Colors is far more elaborate visually and is also more than just a quick update.
Perhaps if Sega simply updated the Wii graphics for Switch to 720/1080p we would be seeing 60fps.
It played at 30fps on the Wii, and that was fine, because it was consistent. It's nice to see a Wii game like Skyward Sword get boosted to 60fps—actually it's weird as heck, but I'll get used to it—but as long as the game doesn't skip frames or have hideous slowdown, I'll still enjoy it.
A stable 30fps is still fine to play, but seeing how a game like this isn't 60fps feels more insulting than disappointing. Why couldn't they prioritize development for the Switch's hardware capabilities, then make massive improvements for other platforms? It's just a remaster/remake, so the expectations should be high.
Dang. 60 fps would have made the game even more tempting for me. The chances aren't looking good though.
I'm worried that one day I'll be able to tell the difference between 60 and 30 frames or 1080 and 4k and then till ruin my experience of games.
Why is it that a game is always made to run at 30 fps or 60 fps? What's wrong with 40 or 50fps? Or any other number in between
@SaturnHero
Without Variable Refresh Rate a 40 or 50fps cap will look like a juddery mess on 60hz TVs because neither of those are multiples of 60, however even without VRR if you cap a game at 40fps on a 120hz TV it look very smooth compared if tried that on a 60hz one. The judder I’m describing is the reason why even slight dips before 60 are noticeable especially when you’re moving the camera around in a game.
@SalvorHardin
Gotcha, I figured there was a good reason.
emulation gang
Oh noes, 30 eff pee ess, I guess I will be skipping this and.......
No. I won't be skipping this at all. Jeebus, 30FPS is hardly a deal-breaker.
@GrailUK No, you didn't. Because I doubt anyone where cares if you are satisfied playing on 30 fps or not. Usually when we complain about it is because WE are not satisfied, not because someone else is not satisfied. So you can keep being happy playing your 30 fps, and we can keep wishing for 60 fps.
@SilentHunter382 Well... there is ONE visual novel franchise you might not want to get on Switch if it has the same fate as Sonic Colors Ultimate. And it's coming on the Holidays, December 2nd.
I thought this might be the case... Would much rather get this on Switch but might have to get the Xbox One version instead....
@Gus_Campos Phew. I'm glad you cleared that up. I can get back to worrying about OLED screens now.
@The_New_Butler i definitely agree with the framerate stability being priority.
to use a sonic game as an example i remember sonic adventure DX (gamecube) ran at 60fps with frequent drops while the dreamcast sonic adventure was 30 and was iirc a lot more stable. as a result the DX version felt noticeably choppier that the original game.
MHstories also recently looks noticeably rough as its framerate wasn't locked.
im just hoping its a stable 30 and doesn't drop below that since thats when i start to really notice issues (like with the town areas in Ys IX)
@PSoneboi yep that size monitor seems to be best way to play. I play on a 40ish tv while my gf plays on a 24inch monitor and it is way sharper on that. But if you sit back and dont have great eyesight the switch on a tv is better than playing on a small screen (Three Houses for example)
I think I will like the new OLED once my switch kicks the bucket
Let's analyze this for a moment. Sonic Colors was a Wii game that came out a full year before Skyward Sword. If Nintendo was capable of upgrading SS to HD without losing the framerate, it stands to reason that the Switch could have easily handled a 60FPS version of Colors.
So, I don't buy for a second the notion that the Switch is somehow incapable of handling it. If anything, this is living proof that SEGA programmers aren't competent enough to port the game across multiple platforms. We've seen this before, with SEGA producing very subpar PS2 versions of Sonic games like Heroes and Unleashed.
Seriously, this is Sonic Colors - a 2010 game way less demanding than something like Breath of the Wild.
@PSoneboi I get it if that is type of worlds you need but I still play board games, etc so even though I have a rtx gpu gaming rig that I love playing outer worlds and some metro, etc I still love the gameplay of switch games like mario kart, zelda, three houses, and other stuff
