Re: Diablo II: Resurrected Is Coming To The Nintendo Switch This Year

BoilerBroJoe

@BloodNinja I think I may not have explained properly - I didn't mean cross-saving with the old releases themselves. I'm talking about including the original as an option (a la Metroid Zero) and then having your save data work in both versions. But it would all still be within the new release.
Lets take a simple game like Link's Awakening on Switch, for example. If they had the option in the main menu to play either the remake or a ROM of the Gameboy/Gameboy Color version, the only info that would need to be transferable would be your items, the number of rupees/hearts you currently have, and your coordinates on the game map (not sure if puzzles reset or not - it's been a while since I've played, but you get the idea) My point is, even if you're not trying to seamlessly toggle between two versions of the game instantaneously, it should be possible to "link" save data and then have your save file for one update each time the other is changed (if you so choose). For more complex RPGs it might get tougher, especially since lots of remakes involve re-balanced stats and whatnot. But even in some of those cases, it may be more a matter of how "fair" the developer wants you to play; ie. going into a simpler version of a game and scoring items that were redesigned to be less accessible.

Anyway, I'm no game design genius, but I can't imagine it's impossible in every instance, and I'd love to see it tried. But toggling, which almost certainly requires a ground-up redesign like you say - is arguably better, and I'm glad Diablo II is doing it.

Re: Diablo II: Resurrected Is Coming To The Nintendo Switch This Year

BoilerBroJoe

I was waiting for the magic word: toggle. For someone who missed a lot of these classic games, having the option to experience the original visuals and sound is a must for me. I know it's not possible for all remakes since there's a lot going on under the hood that needs to be synchronized, but I still wish more companies would include the originals in these remasters, even if it's just dropping a ROM into the game menu. If you can have cross progression across consoles and PC, why not cross progression between your remake and an original release version?

Re: Random: Brie Larson Doesn't Want To Be The Clown Villager From Animal Crossing

BoilerBroJoe

The hate here is as predictable as clockwork. Here's the thing guys: she's a celebrity who mentions Nintendo considerably more than your average celebrity. She will be mentioned here routinely. Get over it.

Just acknowledge you're pissed that she said "I don’t need a 40-year-old white dude to tell me what didn’t work about A Wrinkle in Time" three years ago, and that if this article were about any other celebrity, you wouldn't have thought twice about it. The "anti-PC" crowd seems to be just as intent on having safe spaces where they don't need to hear the name of that person that upset them in 2018.

Re: Bowser Explains Why Mario's Games Will Be Removed On 31st March 2021

BoilerBroJoe

Still haven't bought Super Mario 3D All Stars and probably won't at this point. I don't want to support the practice of artificial scarcity in a digital market. And quite frankly, I don't feel like that collection is worth $60. I want Sunshine and Galaxy quite a bit, and I hope they appear in some more stable form this generation. If not, it'll hurt, but that's the choice I've made.

Re: Video: 16 Brutal Minutes Of DOOM Eternal Switch Gameplay

BoilerBroJoe

Wow, the full-throated defense of mega-corporations here is quite mind-boggling. Companies are not your friends. You don't have to buy their stuff and you don't need to love the value you're getting even if you do. Capitalism is supposed to be about competition - part of that is criticizing business decisions you don't like, not just saying "yes, please and thank you, oh great owners of production!"

For the record, I raised an eyebrow myself when I saw Doom 64 thrown in as an incentive, since so many people had bought it specifically to tide themselves over. Granted, Doom 64 was extremely cheap, so I don't particularly care, but I certainly won't jump down the throat of someone who does.

Re: Minecraft's Steve Revealed As Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Next DLC Fighter

BoilerBroJoe

Four years ago I might have been annoyed by Minecraft Steve as a character in Smash, but now that I've played the game, I can appreciate it's brilliance even if I'm not a huge fan. You can't ignore the fact that this is the most successful video game of all time, and in just eleven years I think Minecraft Steve can be said to be iconic in the same way that Mario, Sonic and Pac-Man are. I also happen to think that Minecraft's music is stunning, and its worlds lend themselves to a unique looking and functioning stage for Smash. So long story short, I think this is a great addition.

Also, Minecraft Steve and Claire Redfield/Leon Kennedy were the two character additions that I thought were near-certain, so that's one half down. I'm still holding a sliver of hope for my beloved Goemon!

Re: Poll: How Do You Feel About 'Limited-Time' Games From Nintendo?

BoilerBroJoe

Limited availability isn't slimy. What's slimy is the deliberate lack of information being given to consumers. If they said "Look, these will all be available individually down the line, but if you want them bundled for a better price, you have until ____", that'd be fine. But instead it's "Will they come back? Will they be gone until the next system? Guess you're gonna just have to risk it! Teehee!"

Re: WayForward Is Releasing Two Classic Shantae Games On The Nintendo Switch

BoilerBroJoe

FINALLY! Waiting for Risky's Revenge to come to Switch is literally the reason I haven't pulled the trigger on any other Shantae games yet. I don't know why I insisted on playing them all in order, but at least now I can.

The only one I've played is Shantae 1 on the 3DS and I actually never beat it - I think I was up to the last dungeon. I may pick it up for Switch, especially if there are any nice tweaks or features, but Risky's Revenge is the real news for me.

Re: Demon-Slaying RPG Ys Origin Announced For Nintendo Switch, Physical Editions Confirmed

BoilerBroJoe

It's funny that this comes up today; I've been doing a deep dive on the Ys series for the last two days. I always like to try out classic franchises in order if possible (although I've just started Ys VIII myself), so I'd like to see Ys Chronicles come to Switch. Even better if they could add some of the graphics/music options from the pre-1997 releases. I know it already includes the PC-88 soundtrack, so that's cool.

Re: LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Will Feature Almost 500 Characters, Key Art And Screenshots Revealed

BoilerBroJoe

@Krambo42 Not sure if you're trolling since it's such as unpopular opinion, but I actually agree with you. Maybe not better than Return, since that movie was pretty much perfect for the age when I saw it, and I think it was great for what it was. But Last Jedi was the first movie since Empire to actually try something different with the characters and the themes, and in a way, I thought, that still respected the universe. Some parts definitely fell flat, but I think history will be much kinder to The Last Jedi than to The Force Awakens.

Rise of Skywalker was garbage though.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Switch Ports We'd Love To See In 2020

BoilerBroJoe

I know it's a bit obscure now, but I REALLY want a Sleeping Dogs port on Switch.

After that, I'd also like to see a BioShock collection, an Arkham collection, Assassin's Creed Ezio Collection, Bully and (as you mentioned) Shenmue 1 and 2 HD. Those are almost all PS3-era games, so I can't see any huge problems with porting any of them.

Re: Animation Effect From No More Heroes 3 Extended Cut Trailer Surprises Studio

BoilerBroJoe

I don't know... At first I thought it was totally the Envato animation, but after looking closely, NMH looks WAY more like the original Studio Plumeau animation than it does the Envato one. Either it was straight up stolen, or someone saw both assets and thought it was fair to use either variation. Either way, Grasshopper needs to find the individual responsible, or face the music.

And for those saying to "chill out" about IP theft: I'm no fan of IP law myself. But I am totally on the side of a small company having work stolen by a big one. Copyrights are a matter of survival for them and those are exactly the people IP laws SHOULD be protecting.

Re: Top Nintendo Switch Games Are Now Up To 50% Off To Celebrate The Game Awards (North America)

BoilerBroJoe

@AJ81 @Giygas_95. Yep, it was the Black Friday sale. I had been waiting for it to drop to $200 or less and jumped at the opportunity. I know it may very likely go lower in the not too distant future (I was burned on my previous 400GB sd card purchase) but after comparing the cents-per-GB of other cards - courtesy of an article here at Nintendolife - I figured it was unlikely to go any lower than $130 any time soon, and that extra $70 was worth it to get all of my games in one place spooner rather than later.

Re: Review: Star Ocean: First Departure R - An RPG Nostalgia Trip That's Showing Its Age

BoilerBroJoe

Am I the only one that gets disappointed when remakes/remasters of games come out without their original versions to accompany them? You could say it's just a pet peeve, but most movie studios would never release heavily edited special editions without the original being available (George Lucas excluded, of course). It just seems to be a given in the world of cinema that movies are worth preserving and distributing in their original forms, along with their director's cuts and whatnot. I just wish more games offered you a way to toggle original graphics/original sounds etc., or at least stick a ROM in the menu screen.

Re: Sword And Shield's Wild Area Is About The Size Of Two Regions In Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, Says Pokémon Rep

BoilerBroJoe

I'm pretty sure by "region" they mean each area of the BotW map to get filled in when you activate a Sheikah tower. Obviously it's a very rough estimate, since those areas can vary considerably.

Also, I've been hearing people say that the Wild Area is only going to be the section with the lakes, but based on trailers I've seen, it seems like it stretches north, under the multiple train bridges, and to include that small desert area. It may even go as far north as the icy bay, but I could be wrong about that. Anyway, the more the better - I would have loved it to completely surround the cities and other self-contained zones, but this is a very good start. In all honesty, this free-roaming exploration is the main reason I'm considering my first Pokemon since Red/Blue.
