If you've been wanting to relive some of the half-genie hero's earlier adventures on your Nintendo Switch, we've got some exciting news to share. WayForward has announced it will be bringing Shantae and Shantae: Risky's Revenge to the system.
Pre-orders for the original game on Switch (both physically and digitally) will be available this September. On top of this, you'll no longer have to spend a fortune for a cartridge version, as it's getting a physical re-release on the Game Boy Color, courtesy of Limited Run.
Shantae: Risky's Revenge is the Director's Cut release, which was previously made available on the Wii U and multiple other platforms in 2016. This latest version for Nintendo Switch and Xbox One is expected to arrive this Fall, and will also be available in physical form. WayForward says it will share more details about both games soon.

This is one of the few GBC games that deserves a reprint solely due to its scarcity.
Incredible news for fans, the original cartridge is like gold dust.
I already have to many games to get as it is. But I'm soooo happy to see these are coming. Hopefully they'll put seven sirens on sale soon so I can pick it up
Man Limited Run Games will be on a roll this year with great new upcoming physical releases. We already got Streets of Rage 4, Shantae and the Seven Sirens, Panzer Dragoon, and recently Star Wars Episode 1: Racer. Can't wait for physical releases of Shantae 1 & 2, the Castlevania Anniversary Collection, Mighty Gunvolt Burst, Ys Origin, Samurai Shodown NeoGeo Collection, and Grandia I & II HD. There's even a physical Garou: Mark of the Wolve release for the PS Vita soon as well.
I already have the original on 3DS Virtual Console, but I'll gladly double dip because the Switch is easier to record footage for.
Plus I never had a chance to play Risky's Revenge; I missed the chance since I skipped the DSI and went straight to 3DS, and then they shut down the servers. Very lovely news.
Lowkey I wanted a remastered version of the original Shantae instead of a reprint but I guess it's fine.
@retro_player_77 : They're issuing a physical release of Castlevania Anniversary Collection?!
Awesome!!! Now I'm especially glad for resisting the digital editions. It would be even better if they include the Konami collection on the cartridge as well.
This put a smile on my face 😄
I'm curious as to whether the Shantae GBC cartridge will be the original ROM dumped on a cartridge (I believe Capcom was the publisher back in the day) or if they will modify the ROM to acknowledge Limited Run as the publisher of this particular edition.
Either way, it's a boon for collectors.
@Silly_G Yeap it's definitely coming, if you haven't bought the digital version yet, might as well wait for the physical one. I'm just waiting to double dip cause I need my games physical. I'm sure all the other collections will come later as well.

Here it comes!
You know what comment it's time for!

@Luigivaldo Oh, definitely would have preferred a remaster that takes care of some of the nagging issues and updates the graphics. But, then again, it would have been in the HGH-style sprites, likely.
@DrLockdown some DSiWare games are still available on the 3DS eShop, including Risky's Revenge!
Ah, perfect timing for when Shantae gets revealed in Smash as a playable fighter!
I'd care but I live in the U.K which apparently does not exist according to Limited Run.
I got Shantae for GBC a few years back from a friend for free, I hope he didn't learn about the price...
I hope Shantae 1 is more than just a straight port.
FINALLY! Waiting for Risky's Revenge to come to Switch is literally the reason I haven't pulled the trigger on any other Shantae games yet. I don't know why I insisted on playing them all in order, but at least now I can.
The only one I've played is Shantae 1 on the 3DS and I actually never beat it - I think I was up to the last dungeon. I may pick it up for Switch, especially if there are any nice tweaks or features, but Risky's Revenge is the real news for me.
A GBA port of Shantae, with added features, was in the works back in the day. Maybe there’re working with that for the switch version
This is great! I'll grab them digitally.
@Cevil I'd imagine it will go down somewhat, but a lot of collectors are purists so I imagine they will want the original still.
I've wanted a hard copy of this classic for so long.
Full in on both the physical GBC and Switch cartridges.
Dope. I think that's all of them, right? Will be cool to have the complete Shantae series on Switch.
@retro_player_77 : Phew. I've checked out the announcements, and fortunately there's nothing else that I'm interested in. I have far too many games as it is.
I never played the Shantae and the Seven Sirens for switch, but it got good reviews so maybe I’ll give it a go.
@Luigivaldo me too, but beggars can’t be choosers aye?
@DockEllisD looking WAYforward to it, you mean?
Awesome! Have all of them already on 3DS but this is cool! Wish it was a remake of the original. Also...I hate to be that guy, but this even further supports the idea of Shantae for Smash DLC.......
@DrLockdown you can still buy DSiWare games, but only on the 3DS eShop.
@SuperWeird Yup, Switch will be the only console to have all of them, unless the GBC game gets a release on other systems.
@Angelic_Lapras_King not in Australia. I think it was something to do with our classification system
@DrLockdown Ahh okay.
Think the problem I have with these 2 games were I always had no clue where to go next or how to get there, so hopefully the new version of the original will have something to fix that.
So now we got all the Shantae games on switch or are we missing the pirate curse?
The GBC release is a tad surprising but not Risky's Revenge DC.
@Thwomp_Stomper Same. Now she just needs to be added for Smash and I'll be happier.
Oooooh, A Re-release? Awesome Since I played Risky's Revenge, Pirate's Curse, and Half Genie Hero, I've wanted to get the original GBC game for a long time now. I've not played Seven Sirens yet.
I stupidly passed it up back in the early 2000s, and really wish i hadn't as i can't believe how much money this game now fetches.
I really hope Limited Run Games leave everything as it was from the original, and maybe it'll drive the original down.
Day one buy right here, I love Shantae!
When news pieces say "available in physical form too" they should warn that they will be limited, not normally released and available in stores for everyone interested to grab them. It's misleading as it is.
Darn, I bought and completed Risky's Revenge on PS4 just last month!
Got the original Shantae on my 3DS (made liberal use of the Restore function, wonder if that'll be an option on Switch?), Pirate's Curse on Wii U and 1/2 Genie Hero recently on sale on Switch. Haven't got Seven Sirens yet though, but I probably will at some point!
Might still keep an eye on this, depending on the price.
For some reason I've always assumed the Shantae games were like middle-of-the-road quality platformers.
But seeing all this buzz, are they really good and I'm missing out on great stuff? I mean, I love me some platformers, for sure.
@pinta_vodki They are really good platformers.
Good news, so now the entire series will be available on Switch? Perhaps it's time I give these games a go.
Always wanted to play the GBC original!
So excited for this! I have a stupid thing in my brain that stops me from playing games out of order and I’ve got both of the Shantae games (not bought the just released one yet) on switch but not played them as I was watching for at least a rerelease of the second one. Very excited!
@pinta_vodki very charming platformers/Metroidvanias with fantastic gameplay and stellar soundtracks
WOOHOOOOO! RET-2-GO!!! Just finished Seven Sirens and these are the only 2 I haven't played completely yet, so gimme gimme gimme!!!!
This is dope whould get them right away!
I still consider the original GBC game the best Shantae.
... and I consider Risky's Revenge the worst. :-/
@Moroboshi876
I wonder if the reprint going to have sufficient availability or will itself become a collector's item?
(hoping it's like the few LRG that were sold by like Best Buy so I could buy them easily)
I suppose this reprint will be in the slightest different, in that I'm guessing Capcom's name will be taken off it? (since I'm guessing WayForward has published the later games themselves?) So that still keeps a distinction for the original.
So were the rumors of them re-making the original false and really just they're re-releasing it?
There's my Shantae!
...
There's my crying wallet! XD
@Handsomistic15 I would be ecstatic if that happened! A great indie rep for the game. I can see her reveal video having a lot of the humor from the series. #shantaeforsmash
