Original Story [Fri 19th Mar, 2021 15:30 GMT]: Bitmap Books, a UK-based publisher known for its stunning retro gaming books, has announced a new project which tackles the entire history of Japanese role-playing games.
Fittingly titled 'A Guide to Japanese Role-Playing Games', this new book is a 652-page monster created in collaboration with author Kurt Kalata – who we're happy to have worked with right here on Nintendo Life. It features reviews of more than 600 games in its attempt to cover the entire history of the genre, even tackling a wide range of sub-genres like strategy RPGs, roguelikes, and dungeon crawlers.
Video role-playing games, adapted for computers from their pen-and-paper forebears, have been around since the earliest days of digital gaming. Despite initial similarities to Western games, Japan’s output began diverging in dramatic ways, inspired by its own culture and art, producing a style of game that’s often wildly different from its Western counterpart. From Dragon Quest to Final Fantasy, from Megami Tensei to Pokémon, A Guide to Japanese Role-Playing Games explores the expansive history of Japanese role-playing games, beginning on 8-bit microcomputers, and following them all the way up to the heavy hitters of the modern era.
It's set to launch this June if you're interested in picking up a copy (the book's product page is live on Bitmap's site right now, although orders haven't yet opened). You'll also spot a special Collectors Edition that'll be available alongside the standard release, adding a special slipcase cover and extra goodies.
Previous Bitmap Books' titles that are worth a look include Game Boy: The Box Art Collection and its NES and SNES compendiums. You'll find even more on the publisher's official site.

Okay... OKAY that's awesome.
Dangggg That's pretty freaking awesome, have to say I'm tempted
That looks gorgeous. Getting one for sure.
If the 'Is The Legend of Zelda an RPG?' debate wasn't enough, here we have Castlevania listed as one. Let the floodgates open!
In all seriousness, this looks like a lovely coffee-table tome.
Castlevania? That's a s t r e t c h.
Oooo, this is very much my sort of thing
@Marchop I think as it covers the series, the later entries on the DS had a lot of stat building / levelling up which has RPG elements. I'm surprised by Monster World though.
For that small amount of money I will 100% buy it.
@sikthvash Thanks for the info - as I am old I haven't played those ones and was therefore ignorant. Still ... it's fun to find fault!
I'll be ordering a copy. I got their CRPG book, and it's pretty amazing!
Aaaand I'm totally ordering this!
600! So, it covers just Switch Kemco games? =)
Heavily considering picking this up. This sounds like a herculean effort.
@ryancraddock Are the "reviews of more than 600 games" reprints of existing reviews, or brand new reviews? Hard to understand how that would work either way. If they're reprints, then where did they come from, and if they're "brand new", then was it like a huge team of people coming together to write reviews?
I'm scratching my phone's screen with my credit card but nothing is happening. Does anybody have a similar problem?
Love Bitmap Books and will pre-order this as it looks fabulous. I love the CRPG book.
@nimnio 99% of them are brand new, written by either myself or one of the other 20 or so contributors.
Welp, I definitely need this!
If Kurt is behind this it's going to be great.
Okay, I'm very interested.
This book includes the Zelda series. The great debate has been settled.
Wow, what an undertaking, there’s probably more than 652 pages of dialogue in an average JRPG. Looks like it will cover sub genres as well, which is why it can include series like Castlevania and LOZ.
Dangit. I want this.
Is it possible to get this in Canada or is it a UK only thing? Because if so, then I'll definitely keep an eye on it
@Purgatorium my rationale is that early Japanese magazines categorized it as an RPG, since it's basically a descendent of Hydlide, it's just that the definition shifted over the years so that Zelda games didn't much quality anymore (except Zelda II). Plus it inspired a whole bunch of other action-RPGs and it felt weird to mention those (Quintet stuff, etc.) and not include Zelda.
@TheRealKyleHyde Haha live your Kyle Hype picture. And your content sounds like something he would say.
This looks incredible, I'll definitely be picking this up!
I dont see a price for the collectors edition, i might be tempted depending on price
@invictus4000 "It's a coffee table. There's a thick book lying on top of it. The cover art is of some medieval punks with swords and bows and whatnot. Then there's a pair of kids sitting in front of a TV. No idea what that's all about. Maybe Bradley would know..."
hmm..looks good but I have no where to place this with all my other Nintendo Game collection books.......
@TheRealKyleHyde Comment of the year, ya dig?
Can't wait for this, extremely stoked.
Pre-ordering this one!
ugh this is so cool. But the shipping is a killer :/
@konbinilife what 'conservative comments' were removed?
Bitmap Books are superb, I recommend their books.
Just ordered a copy, thanks for the heads up!
@Marchop I think in hindsight Castlevania 2 and SOTN can be called Action RPGs if games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake are Horizon: Zero Dawn considered them today.
Already got the special edition. Had this book on my radar since y'all posted about it months ago.
Im a sucker for books like these. I got their SNES one and its amazing. Will probably have to pick up this one
Not shipping to Brazil... Sad day
@BionicDodo @Fighter_Hayabusa Same here, the cRPG book was worth every penny, just a boon for everyone who ever enjoyed one of these games back in the day - or even today. Some of the articles not only gave those warm and fuzzy nostalgia vibes, but also sent me straight to my GoG library and then playing 😍
Definitely going to get this jRPG one as well!
Is it all articles, are there (full) pages dedicated to artwork as well?
The logic people use to try and make Zelda an RPG can be used to make every single video game where you have a story and a character and you control that character, into an RPG game.
"You play the role of Link so its an RPG" - so by this logic, DOOM is an RPG, so is Metroid, Mario and every game where you play a character in a story.
Because taking the literal term Role Playing Game can be applied literally, to 90% of video games.
But Zelda is not an RPG by the industry definition of the term, because it uses literally NONE of the traditional RPG tropes that are needed to make it an RPG.
And Castlevania is definitely not an RPG.
I'll pick this up cheap on ebay one day, dont mind my books second hand.
I'm interested in this. But it looks like it's already sold out. 2nd print run is in October, maybe I'll get lucky then.
The game in the first image (Japanese PC RPGs) looks like it's drawing heavily on the graphical engine of Link's Awakening DX / Oracles of Seasons & Ages. Does anyone know what that game is? I can't seem to find a reference in the article...
@kkalata
This is mostly right. I'd say that Zelda's current releases (esp. Breath of the Wild) are as JRPGy as say, Xenoblade is. The turn-based combat D&Desque leveling with an overhead map screen and random encounters is just a subgenre of RPG that's particularly popular in Japan because of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy dominating the JRPG market.
@marandahir Hmmm... The experience-based levelling system, party of characters with vary stats, and combat relying heavily on decisions rather than pure action make Xenoblade a far more typical RPG than Breath of the Wild. Because Zelda is an action-adventure series! And that’s OK.
There are elements that blur the edges, like the exploration of a big open world - but you get those in action adventures too, like Assassins Creed, Red Dead Redemption. Really, only the equipment with varying stats in BotW is borrowed from RPGs. I’m not sure that’s enough for me. If you kill 100 octoroks you’re no stronger than when you started.
But if you, or anyone else, wants to call Zelda an RPG series, then obviously that’s fine. We all have our own classifications in our heads’
Supporting an Internet bully by buying his book? Yeah, I don't think so, especially after what happened to Near a few days ago. This site just posted an article about someone that committed suicide after being cyberbullied constantly, and now they are encouraging buying a book from someone who encouraged the cyberbullying of someone else just last year (and never even apologized for it)...?
I'd rather read that book than play through most of the games it covers.
I'm sold, if I can get the hard case. It's a big shame it's limited to the 2000 copy limited collector's edition.
Edit - Collector's Edition sold out. I quit.
@Krull MANY RPGs these days do not tie character progression to grinding but to story-based accomplishments or sidequests. Zelda does this too with the heart containers and stamina wheels and new abilities on top of the weapon progression.
In addition, the more dungeons you've completed, the better the drop rates you'll get on weapons, and the tougher the enemies will be on the field. It's very much an RPG; it's just an Action RPG.
Heck, the predominant progression mode in Dungeons & Dragons these days is story-based rather than xp grinding (rewarding xp for quest completion etc). And Xenoblade did that too, with the main way of growing in level from completing side quests, not from fighting enemies. BotW'ss "XP" are spirit orbs, and they can be obtained by clearing side dungeons, side quests, etc. Otherwise, it's all about equipment progression and exploration to find bigger and better loot. That's very much an RPG standard, as well.
@marandahir That’s a strong argument! I concede your points, definitely. BotW still doesn’t feel like an RPG to me, which is obviously a hopeless response, but I admit you put an excellent case.
The blurring of lines between action adventures and RPGs makes many distinctions purely a matter of semantics anyway. But it’s fun to argue!
@Ralek85 My copy arrived yesterday and it is indeed a beautiful book! Not sure it will top the CRPG one though as that had such a perfect combination of facts and personal stories and passion.
My copy just arrived- impeccably packaged! Absolutely pristine condition. It arrived a couple of days early as well. I can't wait to check it out!
@BionicDodo Glad to hear it! If it's anywhere near as filled with passion as the cRPG one, I think it's going to be a perfect companion piece! 👍 Where did you buy it from to already have a copy btw?
@Ralek85 I order all of their books directly from the Bitmap Books site.
@BionicDodo Oh okay, I only ever saw it as "Coming soon" over there so far 😅
