Switch owners will be treated to not one, not two, but three games from D3 Publisher's third-person shooter series Earth Defense Force this year, it's been revealed.
As reported by Weekly Famitsu, both Earth Defense Force 2: Invaders from Planet Space and Earth Defense Force 2017 are headed to Switch in Japan, joining the already announced Earth Defense Force: World Brothers. The former is launching on 15th July, while the latter is planned for an autumn release (thanks, Gematsu).
Both of these newly-revealed titles will reportedly feature 'similar specifications' to the versions previously released on PS Vita; both games originally launched on home consoles in the 2000s before getting the remake treatment on Vita several years later. As fans of the series will know, each game has players taking on the role of an Earth Defence Force soldier during an alien invasion.
A western release for these new Switch versions is yet to be confirmed, but here's hoping for more on that soon. New title, Earth Defense Force: World Brothers, already has a May release date locked in for Europe and North America.

EDF! EDF!
I own both of these on Vita and they're great games. You can never have too many EDF games on a system.
More EDF can only be a good thing.
Looking forward to World Brothers next month.
EDF2 (despite the number, seemingly the first game from what I've read?🤔) will be another double-dip. A blast even on Vita, but if Switch port also decides to utilize the gyro capability the Vita one didn't... :3
@nhSnork No, EDF2 is the second game in the series, it was called Global Defence Force when it released on PS2 in Europe, while the first game was called Monster Attack. I don’t think the first two games were released in North America until the Vita version of the second game.
@nhSnork
It is the second game in the series.

The first and second games were originally localised as "Monster Attack" and "Global Defense Force", before eventually sticking to the "Earth Defense Force" name.
The EDF series started out as part of Simple 2000 Japanese series of budget releases for the PS2, 2000 referring to the 2000 yen pricing.
@JoakimZ @RupeeClock ah, thanks, now I remember reading as much. Guess my memory dismissed the first game due to never technically making it out of a different series's roster.😅
The vita versions were great, they had 4 player online co-op, where as the original releases only had like 2 player split screen.
It would be great to see these games come to the west. I'd buy them for sure.
Will these have online matchmaking?
Couldn't imagine playing an EDF game solo
Everytime I see some news about this, I think of that :
@RupeeClock Strictly speaking EDF (Earth Defense Force) was a SNES shooter/SHMUP. The name was just then stolen for this new franchise that is more popular.
This has always been a PlayStation title. Weird to see it finally come to Nintendo.
Shows that 3rd parties are really flocking to switch
One series I've never managed to get into properly.
E! D! EFFFFF!!
There can never be too much of these games.
The original 2 releases were just about my most-played PS2 games in Japan, and I imported EDF4 for the PS3 after returning to the States.
I considered getting World Brothers when it released in Japan last year, but those voxel graphics are so distracting. I'm glad we have more conventional entries to look forward to now. Will definitely stay tuned!
Kind of wish it were EDF 4.1 ... I've had my eyes on it for a while, but haven't picked it up because I'm concerned about player population.
@pepepopo Not weird at all when you consider that Nintendo has basically taken over Sony's former role in Japan as the hardware market leader.
At this point if you're a Japanese publisher and you dont put your games on Switch, you're just leaving tons of potential money on the table.
@smithyo Ok, that clears up a lot of confusion. I'd only ever heard of the old SHMUPS before seeing the occasional glance at the 3d games, and thought that it was a weird reboot of the SNES game. I'm glad to have that one cleared up.
Ah, easy recommendations for anyone who even remotely enjoys over the top third person shooters that don't take themselves too seriously, with many and massive nods to classic sci-fi and monster movies.
I love and own all the games on the Xbox 360, and if these new outings and re-releases are anything like the 360 games, then they're definitely going onto my list of things to keep an eye on...
I love EDF and welcome it on Switch but I sure hope EDF 2017 is the XB360 version instead of the Vita version as that one is enhanced and has great 2 player split screen co-op which would be perfect on Switch. I know it claims both are Vita but I hope that's not the case. Really hope it makes it stateside in physical as these are day 1 for me. Also, Gyro aiming would be a really nice option.
WHAT?! First I am hearing of a new EDF title on Switch. Why no coverage of World Brothers on here?
