Re: Poll: Did the Wii U and 3DS Nintendo Direct Kickstart 2016?

B238ben

I thought it was outstanding. I've already bought Super Mario World and F-Zero, will buy Paper Mario game and Star Fox on Wii U and nearly all the Super Nintendo games on 3DS. If the 3DS had GBA games, it would be nearly perfect. Great stuff announced yesterday (how often does Microsoft or Sony announce games like this randomly)?

Re: Nintendo Download: 18th February (North America)

B238ben

I usually hit nothing to buy but this week is very easy--Fire Emblem is a game I have been looking for since I saw it announced. I will probably pick up Ninja Gaiden and Double Dragon as well, with a few Fire Emblem themes to round out this week. I wish every week (or at least once a month) could be like this. Hopefully Intelligent Systems will get to work on a new Advance Wars game for the 3ds (or is it too much to hope for multiple versions of that game).

Re: Nintendo Outlines Future Plans for 3DS and Promises That "Several Strong Titles" are Planned

B238ben

I am thankful for the multiple Fire Emblem games coming out, but my favorite portable game from Nintendo has always been Advance Wars. If they produced a new Advance Wars (or a compilation of the old ones) I would instantly buy that. If they would be willing to use the power of the New 3ds to port Gameboy Advance Games/Super Nintendo games I would also buy a ton of those. I am very satisfied with my purchase of the 3ds but those games, perhaps a few new surprises would easily get my money. As for now, I will continue to enjoy Steam World Heist and look forward to the new Fire Emblem games.

Re: Feature: Our Staff's Hopes and Dreams for Nintendo's 2016

B238ben

Am I the only one that is still hoping for Advance Wars 3DS? That would make 2016 huge for me (or even an anthology title that has all the GBA and DS games on a single cartridge/download, or even better, just GBA/DS games available for digital download on the e-shop). I'm also looking forward to Fire Emblem Fates as well. The NX should be very cool and I'm looking forward to the E3 announcements (though it will be tough to top the World Championships from last year).

Re: Talking Point: Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS Set a Standard That'll Be Tough to Follow

B238ben

I think the true purpose behind the voting for favorite characters on the Smash ballot was to add people in the next entry in the series. This has let Nintendo know what the fans truly want, and given the time Nintendo can make the appropriate deals between other companies like Microsoft for King K. Rool and others. This takes the creative burden off of him while providing valuable insights into what the majority of fans want. Now he can just focus on perfecting the formula and balance of characters on a more powerful system. I will wager he will step down after the next iteration of Smash adding in the true winners of the Smash ballot and being hailed as a hero.

Re: Review: SteamWorld Heist (3DS eShop)

B238ben

I've been waiting for this game since I heard it was a strategy game (I bought the first one but haven't had a chance to play it quite yet). Glad to hear that it is a great game and I will buy this day one. Looking forward to playing this over Christmas break.

Re: Poll: Nintendo's Free-to-Play Experiments - Are You Still Playing?

B238ben

I like Strechmo and purchased that one in full. The ones listed above never interested me so I didn't purchase them. My approach is simply if the game is interesting I will purchase it, and am happy to support quality games I enjoy. The games I am not interested in price does not change my opinion. I hope Nintendo finds effective strategies to deal with a changing market, but at the core of it I only care about the quality of the games.

Re: Editorial: It's Not Fun to Criticise Nintendo Games, But It's Been Unavoidable in 2015

B238ben

Plenty of amazing games (Splatoon, Mario Maker, Yoshi's Wooly World on the Wii U), and Majora's Mask, Mario Tipping Stars, and to a lesser extent Tri-Force Heroes (even less than that Codename Steam which has its moments). With how busy I am these days it has been a decent amount, but I try to balance these thoughts with hopefully the NX will be amazing. A Splatoon sequel, a new 3D Mario Adventure (or 2D), some great mobile content (I'm holding out for Advance Wars 3DS---please Nintendo!). To be fair, I still enjoy Smash Brothers and Mario Kart, DCKF, and Captain Toad so it gives me all the time I need to fully enjoy those titles. While I wish there was a new Captain Toad (short announcement period, amazing game) I understand it is not possible. Hopefully, being patient will lead to something amazing on the next Nintendo system.

Re: Video: This is How Single Player Works in The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes

B238ben

This looks like playing the same level three times in a row... I was planning on buying a Zelda game regardless, but this video along with the poor preview posted earlier on this site is leading me to hesitate on this one. I'll be reading the review closely before purchasing it. I hope it brings the same Zelda charm as so many other games have, but there is not much hype right now for a new Zelda release (I wish they would've just released A Link to the Past or a new true 3DS Zelda game following A Link Between Worlds I would be beyond hyped).

Re: Mario History: Mario Kart 8 - 2014

B238ben

This game is nearly perfect---I will agree that the battle mode is a big disappointment. It is still my favorite Mario Kart game (and I've been playing since the original on the SNES), but the lack of a good battle mode is disappointing. Was hoping they would include it in DLC, but it doesn't look like it. With how great the controls/graphics and online abilities were made, I thought having a great online component to Battle Mode would have made this a perfect game.

Re: Nintendo Download: 3rd September (North America)

B238ben

I keep holding out hope that the drought of 3ds virtual console games combined with the announcement of the smaller New 3ds being made available in the US will somehow lead to Gameboy Advance and/or Super Nintendo games being made available on those systems (as Christmas nears it would definitely get interest in the New 3ds too). I hope I am correct that all the people who normally work on other games are working to emulate the Gameboy Advance classics right now. Is that too much to hope for?

Re: Review: Super Mario Maker (Wii U)

B238ben

I have been looking forward to this game for some time. My daughter and I both loved Tipping Stars and we've been waiting to do even more. I wish there was a cool app for the 3ds that you could export levels to as well, but other than that from what I've read this is the full package. Looking forward to playing on September 11th.

Re: Video: Classic N64 Stages Make a Triumphant Return in Super Smash Bros.

B238ben

The Nintendo 64 levels have always been my favorite. I like the new characters and stages (I don't play as the Mii fighters honestly) and hope this stream of downloads continues. Stages are definitely my favorite--can you imagine if we could buy many of the past levels? Having so much fun with this game, Mario Kart 8, Splatoon, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker right now. Thanks Nintendo!

Re: Rumour: Nintendo NX Won't Be As Powerful As PlayStation 4

B238ben

I seem to agree with the majority--I love Nintendo games but having a console come out 3 years after its competition and still not being on the same level? After reeling from an underselling Wii U (I love the Wii U, definitely gets more playtime than my Xbox One). If this is true then maybe Nintendo just can't compete with the other companies out there. Very sad. With all that said it is just a rumor so who really knows, and honestly I'll probably buy it anyways (but I'm clearly not the market Nintendo is trying to expand into--they are trying to get higher numbers than the Wii U...).

Re: Poll: Is Splatoon a Blockbuster That'll Help Revive the Wii U?

B238ben

I think voice chat should have been integrated, but I do think there is a lot of interest in the larger gaming community because whether people love/hate Nintendo they do know the company has created many timeless games that people love to play. With the general interest in shooters and a unique concept, I do think this will gain a lot of attention and awards, and definitely lead to some people picking up a Wii U that otherwise would not. However, I do no think it will be enough to turn the Wii U around into a huge success (especially with Zelda Wii U delayed), though I hope I'm wrong. Regardless of the larger gaming community my daughter and I are looking forward to playing this game together, and to be honest I feel bad for those who might ultimately miss out on another great game on the Wii U (so many amazing games!).

Re: New Fire Emblem on 3DS Takes Shape as Two Separate Releases in Japan

B238ben

From reading the comments above, everyone seems disappointed. I was disappointed with the last direct until I saw this article---from what I gather/hoping is that this is two different Fire Emblem games. I would love to have two different Fire Emblem games instead of just one, and I will be happy to pay to show my support and keep a great series going. In fact, I hope that Nintendo starts to double down on a lot of series like Advance Wars, etc. How often do we end up complaining about waiting for the sequel? This way we get two games, Nintendo can cut down on costs because the same people can easily design parts used by either, and everyone wins. I think this is a win, unless this DLC part is significantly watered down and essentially just a slight twist on what we already bought. I would argue this is essentially the same thing Nintendo did when they created Smash Bros (cut down on development time/costs by producing the 3ds and Wii U version together, except this time it is on the same system. Keep up the great work Nintendo.

Re: Talking Point: The Legend of Zelda on Wii U May Benefit From a Delay, But It Leaves a Blockbuster-Sized Gap

B238ben

I have a feeling that they have a few unannounced games, specifically the vaguely mentioned Metroid game they are working on (who knows, perhaps for both the 3DS and Wii U). I get the feeling that Nintendo has heard the message loud and clear that people want more games, which is why we have seen a shift to some (outstanding) $40 games like Captain Toad where they can have many smaller projects going on. This lets them launch many games which eases the "drought" everyone complains about and simultaneously gives them some breathing room from rushing their main games out (they can also see what people like and expand on the popular titles with DLC, which I suspect might be on its way for Captain Toad and others).
I predict that they will have a number of smaller games take the place of Zelda along the lines of a Captain Toad type $40 game, and that when Zelda does come out it will be heavily integrated into Amiibo and the hinted at Amiibo ability to unlock previous games in a series making it "the most complete Zelda experience" (like the original Zelda game and SNES version are included, etc).
My only fear is that they have spent so much money into this new Zelda that they don't write off the Wii U and delay this game until they can achieve a simultaneous release on it and the NX.
Just my thoughts.

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Confirms Playable Star Fox for E3, a Future for F-Zero and More

B238ben

Perhaps they could just produce a digital version of F-Zero (I like it quite a bit, though not more than Mario Kart) and cut some of their costs (shipping, disc production, etc) in that manner while still making it available to those that want it at an affordable price. A win-win perhaps, with DLC there to help generate more revenue and more people logging into the e-shop.

Re: Feature: The Biggest Wii U Games of 2015

B238ben

Amazing list of games coming out. I'm looking forward to Zelda, Star Fox, Mario Maker, as well as Yarn Yoshi, but Splatoon got my #1 vote as I'm pretty pumped for that game. I hope there will be a similar article for upcoming 3DS games, and if Nintendo were to work on a new Advance Wars, Fire Emblem (3DS and Wii U) game, it would be a perfect year. Nintendo makes the best games out there!

Re: Poll: Which is the Best Super Smash Bros. Game?

B238ben

I love the original levels on the N64 game and I've probably logged the most hours into that version. I like the others (I never played Brawl though) as well, though I found Melee moved just too fast for me (especially compared to the original!). I am enjoying playing the Wii U version, but I really enjoy the portability of the 3DS version too. Overall, with Amiibo functionality added to the Wii U I give it the edge slightly over the 3DS portability and the memories of the original, but once the New 3DS is released in America I would probably vote for the 3DS. I am really hoping for the older levels released as DLC (I don't have time to make the levels and professionals would do a better job anyways), I think I would buy them all. All of them seem like great games.

Re: Poll: Which is the Best Mario Kart Game?

B238ben

I think Mario Kart 8 is by far the best version, with HD graphics and amazing courses. I remember playing the original SNES version and was amazed by it, but with DLC courses and characters the time I've logged into Mario Kart 8 continues to grow. Love the game, looking forward to even more tracks! If they would just put in a battle mode it would be perfect.

Re: Feature: Time to Vote For Your Game of the Year Awards 2014

B238ben

I love Tropical Freeze (one of my favorite all time games) but if I'm honest and look at time spent in the games I have to lean towards Mario Kart 8 (both are still amazing games). I loved Shovel Knight for the 3DS as well. So many great games this year, looking forward to next year!

Re: Talking Point: The Time Is Right For A Nintendo Phone

B238ben

I agree with those that argue a Nintendo phone would not be successful. I don't think many people would ultimately give up their current phones in order to get one, and since Nintendo would have to make the games exclusive to the phone they would sell less of everything (hardware/software). If Nintendo were to explore this direction I think a more profitable route would be to release it on Android/iPhone with a special controller also sold by Nintendo. While I love the 3DS, I do wonder how much longer people will buy a separate gaming system. While I disagree with the following notion myself, ultimately I think most people are fine with the games available on iPhone/Android and don't really care too much about the caliber of games (which Nintendo excels at). I will continue to buy Nintendo systems, but ultimately I agree with those that see Nintendo abandoning the market and selling their software on the digital stores of Android and iPhone. As a teacher, I speak to many teens and this seems to be the direction many of them are heading in (not all by any means, but definitely a larger and larger chunk of them). I would be thrilled to see this turn out differently, but the hardware of a phone can cost upwards of $1,000 and gives the phones significantly more power than what Nintendo can produce for a few hundred dollars. People are already in the habit of upgrading their phones every few years, but expect a gaming system to last 5 years. There is no way for Nintendo to continue to profitably keep up technologically and simultaneously compete with the cheap games on tablets and phones. I see them retaining some control with a better controller and control of games.

Re: Preview: Going Retro On The Go With Ultimate NES Remix

B238ben

I got the first NES Remix on my Wii U with platinum rewards points and was pleasantly surprised. I was about to get the second one when I saw that they were coming out with the 3DS version and I think I will spend my money on this one instead (if they come out with a eshop version that is). I think the portability and the best of NES game challenges are perfect when I'm waiting while I'm on the go and I always enjoy having a bunch of digital games on my 3DS (reformatting a 64 gb card for my 3DS lets me have 20 3DS games on my machine right now without deleting anything or worrying about space). I think I'll pick this up on day 1.

Re: Video: Here Are Some Fun Facts About The Mighty GameCube

B238ben

The Gamecube is my favorite, but the Wii U is starting to change that, especially with the great virtual console games from the DS coming online. The only "popular" Nintendo console that was I really enjoyed was the SNES. I often think when Nintendo's sales are down it drives them to publish more top notch software themselves and therefore I like the system better, something I think we see the Wii U doing right now. My least favorite Nintendo console was the Wii and the sales on that system were incredible.

Re: Poll: Tell Us What You Think of the New Nintendo 3DS

B238ben

I think I will get the "New" Nintendo 3ds XL, but with the pattern of constant revisions to their handhelds to boost sales I think I will wait for some time when the next Nintendo portable comes around (at least waiting until the 2nd version comes out). Also, I still cannot fathom why they didn't just put another circle pad on the 3ds---unless of course that is the NEXT revision...
