Following the announcement of our staff and reader awards results, we decided that the release line-up of 2014 had given us an opportunity to re-assess some of Nintendo's biggest franchises and determine current-day favourites. In our first poll Mario Kart 8 boosted away with over 50% of the vote for that IP. The Wii U entry has clearly delighted a good number within the Nintendo Life community.
In the second of three polls we now direct our attention to Super Smash Bros., in which there are just five entries competing - the next poll will have a lengthy line-up, and you can likely guess what that'll be. Though low in number, we suspect there'll be fierce debate - the GameCube's entry is widely regarded as the best in the competitive scene, while the latest releases have their own merits; a Smash Bros. enthusiast in the Nintendo Life team even placed the 3DS entry above the Wii U release in their Game of the Year voting.
Which do you like the most?. Is it the classic balancing of Melee that you prefer? The portability on 3DS? The HD and amiibo support on Wii U? Perhaps you prefer Brawl, or want to honour the original on Nintendo 64? [And yes, we're only counting official Nintendo releases for this vote]
Here's an opportunity to declare your favourite, so by all means vote in the poll and debate the merits of each in the comments. May the best fighter win!
Which is the best Super Smash Bros. game? (1,019 votes)
- Super Smash Bros.
- Super Smash Bros. Melee
- Super Smash Bros. Brawl
- Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS
- Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
- I can't decide!

Where's Project M, though? lol
Wii U hands down. Though Brawl it also very high up there due to having such an extensive solo player experience.
@zerocielX Are you joking, or? Sorry, it's somewhat difficult to detect when people are being sarcastic on the internet.
Wii U by a long shot. I was even playing Melee before I got the Wii U version and I was still blown away. The new mods may not be great, but the tweaks to the basic gameplay and characters, as well as the stages make it completely worth it.
@Teenchampion Yes. That's why he said "lol".
@Teenchampion Yeah, I'm just joking c:
@zerocielX Okay, good to know, haha.
Wii U; no contest.
Melee is great, but my family is by far having more of a blast on the U version.
I got a soft spot for Melee so I'll be going with that. I do like both the Wii U and 3DS entries, but there just seems to be something missing. Like it's a little more generic for some reason. Though I will say the gameplay tweaks are top notch.
I'm no Melee elitest though. I just really liked and played that one a lot with my bros. and sisters.
Super Smash Bros. for WiiU.
It has loads more of everything that made previous games in the series amazing.
Right now without a doubt Wii U, Melee is still really great though. We'll just have to see how Wii U holds up for me in the long run.
Objectively, I'd say WiiU, but my memories with Smash 64 can't be matched. I voted "can't decide." WiiU would win for sure if it had BtT and BtP.
It was hard between Brawl and Wii U, because I had more memories from brawl, but overall I think Wii U is the best one.
I'm not too keen on the so-called 'Classic' mode, but other than that I'd say 'Wii U' for the sheer amount of content and possibly the best gameplay (faster than Brawl, but slow enough to feel more graceful than Melee).
That said Melee was the one that felt like the biggest leap over its predecessor, with amazing character models and so much more to do than 64. Melee must have been my most-played multiplayer game ever, and even though Brawl had even more crammed in, I guess it just didn't keep me coming back like Melee.
'Wii U' is looking good though, but the problem is these days it's a bit harder to get people in a room to actually play it.
P.S.
So judging from this and the Mario Kart poll it looks like the Wii U console itself is shaping up to be a fan favourite...just a shame it hasn't caught on with the other 90% of gamers
There is a handful of characters and stages from melee and brawl that I would like to return, but the 3DS and U games no doubt are the best, but I had a bit more fun with the 3DS version then the U...that's because I played so much of the 3DS version that I am a but tired of smash already, but I see myself playing more of that then the U.
Smash N64 was a classic
Melee was revolutionary
Brawl finally my man... Penguin Dedede
And 3ds/WiiU are just pretty and new and balanced to a T and Pac-man!!!
Wakka wakka wakka!!!!!
I had good times with all the Smash games. Hard for me to decide on this one.
Brawl is my favorite. It was such a step above Melee (which was already brilliant) and I've clocked in thousands of hours and still am not tired of it. Wii U is good, but the stages and music are a bit lackluster. Crazy Orders was a brilliant addition to the series, though.
3ds isnt the best, but it will get way more hours than my on my Wii U because of my travels. So happy they made it!
Nintendo keeps on getting better and better. Wii u is my choice.
It would've been even better with a Story mode. But hey, if they Listen to their fans lets all pray for a DLC.
Project M, no contest. But since it is not an option, Melee since the gameplay is actually fun.
Wii U easily. But it is disappointing to see Brawl with 7% and Melee with 17%. Melee's way too fast, IMO.
Wii U.It has the right amount of speed so it's not too fast or slow, plus the roster is my favorite in the series. Also, there's 8-player Smash and plenty of other fun stuff in it.
I went with Brawl as my favourite, but I haven't tried the Wii U version yet
My favorites in order
1. Smash Wii U - My 2014 GOTY
2. Brawl - played it everyday of second grade
3. Melee - very fun game i played at my cousins
4. 64 - old but gold
5. 3DS - most disappointing game ever but still pretty fun
@Sportsfan1712 i agree with you there but just wait till they get thier handheld synced with wii u in slight terms of power for cross play of thier games. Even though it will probably be after the current gen systems.
For me:
1. SSB Wii U. The vast roster and best gameplay mechanics in the series make this a top game for me; just too bad about the lack of an adventure mode and the way they handled some of the stages.
2. SSB Brawl - Such a great roster, and I personally loved the SubSpace Emissary.
3. SSB 3DS - First time Smashing on the go! Very impressive how they got this to work so well on the 3DS.
4. SSB Melee - Very fun entry in the series, but I certainly don't cling onto this whole wavedashing thing like many others do. The series has evolved to become BETTER games, not WORSE.
5. SSB 64 - The worst in the series, but STILL this is a game I absolutely love! Nostalgia probably plays a big part in it, but it's still amongst my favourite games and enjoy playing it to this day.
@zerocielX I think it isn't there because it isn't offical.
Smash 4 Wii U for the WIN!
@mariovslink62 i was clearly joking, dude.
Melee was and still is too good. Biggest leap the series has seen. Runs faster than any of the other games, which makes it great for competitive matches
Went with N64 for mostly nostalgia reasons. Gamecube was okay too, I missed Wii entirely, and 3DS/Wii U has way too many bugs for a game that came out that late,
Brawl has the best opening music of any game ever. Was kind of let down by the opening music on the new one
My list...
1. Melee: Loved dat Fox.
2. WiiU: Loved dat Zero Suit Samus.
3. Brawl: Loved dem levels.
4. 64: Loved everything about it the time.
5. 3DS: Meh. It's fun I guess.
Seriously though, some of the best video games ever made by human hands. Don't get mad at me for not enjoying the 3DS one that much!
Wii U version + 18 Amiibo = Mii happy
I love them all!But if i had to choose i would pick the new smash bros for the Wiiu, cause of all the content it has!
@icedude545 What do you mean by "empty"? I thought it had the most charm of the series and the amount of game modes was terrific, at least in the Wii U version.
WiiU has the most content and the best online. Much like MK8, this isn't really a debate.
Melee at the top
Smash Wii u second
Brawl at the bottom
That game was just too broken and imbalanced. Hoo boy don't get me started on tripping.
Of the ones I've played:
1)Wii U;
2)Brawl;
3)3ds;
4)64;
I'm the only smash bros fan who never played Melee. Fire at your will...
Wii U Smash hands down. Melee was only loved by the small competitive community who like exploits and glitches. The more balanced and fun game is easily Smash Wii U.
My ranking:
1) Smash Wii U
2) Brawl
3) Smash 3DS
4) Melee
5) Smash 64
I'm going to have to side with Super Smash Bros Wii U. I loved the 3DS version but the Wii U version added more onto that make me love it even more. As for rest, the original SSB was pretty cool in it's time and even though I only played a little of Brawl, I enjoyed it but not as much as the latest entries. Never played Melee, but never liked how "competitive" it was with it's techniques which hugely divided the competitive and casual players.
1. Melee
2. Wii U
3. 3DS
4. Brawl
5. 64
As I have played 3/5 of these games, I'll add my own thoughts:
SSB64: Was fun, for as long as it lasted. I kind of stopped playing once I unlocked everyone, though. Too short, but lots of fun! Also fun to watch at tournaments!
SSBM: Never played, so won't say anything. I'd love to play it someday, though.
SSBB: Oh man, this was my first Wii game, and I blindly asked for this without reading any reviews or anything. Regardless, I was absolutely blown away. During my whole childhood, I always loved to put characters from different TV shows into original stories I made together into one, and I even drew out some of these stories. So obviously, the story mode just completely blew my mind. I also loved the fighting system, though of course now, I'd say I'm in the majority of saying the other games were far superior in that respect, and I always played at 200% damage, even with my lack of knowledge about how the other games compared back then. I also loved collecting trophies!
SSB 3DS: Love it still play it, Megaman is awesome, along with Charizard being a separate character. Lack of story mode, for me at least (for obvious reasons) really hurts, though. :<
Project M also deserves a place here. I play with the Patt mod (look it up, crazy amounts of characters, while still staying stable is quite the feat.) for obvious reasons, and taking snapshots there is absolutely amazing, due to all the characters in it. It's said it's like Melee version, but I haven't played melee yet, but I have noticed it's slightly more technical, and DEFINITELY faster, which I've always liked.
@Lunapplebloom I agree, but ultimately I did vote for the Wii U. I think the latest incarnation is the best. But Melee was during the time when there was no online and I had a TON of friends to crowd around the TV claiming to be the king of Smash. Being a bit older, with friends more spread out and schedules even less likely to line up, those memories, along with that awesome dynamic, will forever belong to Melee...
@Wes880 I would imagine the 3ds one being better on the new 3ds, although the lack of levels on the 3ds version is a shame. Personally my favorite is Brawl. The 64 was fun but tended to mess up my thumb joints. And melee i didnt spend much time on.
1. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U- Feels like a hybrid of Melee and Brawl and has way more content than any SSB game for casual and hardcore players and awesome HD visuals.
2. Super Smash Bros. Melee- Fun, fast paced action. It was my first SSB game.Has an awesome adventure mode, classic mode, and more. Plus who doesn't love that opening intro
3.Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS- I think it is the same as the Wii U version put portable and it has less content. Still an amazing game.
4. Super Smash Bros. Brawl- Fun game for casuals. But not lots of options for hardcore players. Has a decent amount of modes but I don't like tripping in the regular fights. That one thing ruins the fights. But overall is still a fun game.
5. Super Smash Bros. for N64- The game that started it all is fun for a nostalgic look back but it doesn't have enough content to match the other versions. Every SSB game after this game blows it out of the water in content and graphics, but is still fun. I like the classic mode, and has fun muiltiplayer like any SSB game.
If I take Project M into account then i'd say it would be second because it has the best of Melee and Brawl. But it is a fan made game so I didn't consider it.
Even without nostalgia glasses on, I'd have to say Melee outclasses everything else purely in terms of gameplay. To be honest, I don't think this series has ever been as good as Melee. The newest games are better than Brawl in my opinion, but nothing has surpassed Melee.
1: Melee
2: Wii U
3: 3DS
4: Brawl
5: N64
Smash Bros Wii U is easily the best. A ton of features, new characters, 8 player smash, improved online play... Definitely my favorite game in the series! I feel like Melee's overrated. It's fun, but it feels kind of clunky to me.
My rankings:
1. Wii U
2. 3DS
3. Brawl
4. Melee
5. 64
So happy that people didn't jump to Melee like some fanbois would do.. For me it was Wii U hands down
The outcome is imposible to resolve. Everyone has a different story with what they think of smash. Who cares about percentages. It's just a number. Just leave it as a tie.
For competitive it's melee; no contest. Wii U is pretty much a straight upgrade from brawl in a casual standpoint though.
Smash 64 is just plain awful in every regard, but that stands to reason, since it's more of a prototype than anything. Still, it has very barebones features, a small roster, and the worst balancing in the series. But it was also the foundation for the series.
Melee wins by default, since it has the best balancing about everything. Great Single Player, Great Multiplayer, great character selection, great fighter balancing. The only possible downside was the amount of clones. They wanted to focus on the core audience, and did an awesome job delivering without causing too much difficulty for beginners.
Brawl was really messy. The multiplayer aspect was lacking, online was unberable, and Single Player was defined by Subspace Emissary, which is somewhat too long to be a good challenge, but still a nice addition. The game was, however, horribly imbalanced, to a point where Meta-Knight even got banned from online play.
Smash 4 is mediocrity at its best. The roster has balancing issues, the stages are overloaded with gimmicks or have stupid terrain layout, Single Player is a thorough insult, and the "customization" features haven't even been balanced in the slightest. In addition, the "rebalancing" patch only made everything worse.
If you're out for a fair game, Melee is the only option, but that doesn't mean the others aren't fun. They're just not as satisfying as King Melee.
@bobbypaycheque Wrong on every level. Which Smash is the "best" is up to opinion, but Melee still factually has the best balancing in the series.
1. Wii U
2. Melee
3. 64
4. Brawl
5. PSASBR
6. 3DS
Alert alert! Get ready to hear melee fanatics insult you for liking something not melee.
And for those that despise "casuals" and the 4th version because they can't adapt to changes like what happens in pokemon
3DS. More creative levels and portability are both huge for me.
@JasonAnArgoNOT64 Except these "melee fanatics" you speak of have not insulted anybody in these comments. No, all I see is fans of the new games bashing melee fans based on how they assume we act. Your profile says you're 17 which is way too old to act like a little instigator.
1. Wii U
2. Brawl - Worse physics than Melee but so much more to do and see.
3. Melee: Some of the best stages in the series. I placed it below Brawl because of clones and more limited options.
4. 3DS
5. N64
Wii U easily. Not because it's new, it just brings a little of everything I love about each past installment and blends it together perfectly!
To me, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is without question the best iteration of the widely-praised franchise. Not only there's quite a lot of content and features waiting to be unraveled, but the gameplay is so fined-tuned it's very fun to play in the long run. It definitely has everything to enjoy both newcomers and veterans of the series. The same can be said to the 3DS version, but to a lesser extent.
I would consider Super Smash Bros. Melee as the second best game of the franchise, mainly for its finest and speedy gameplay approach and a reasonable amount of content.
Coming in third place is, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The adventure mode is worth playing through once and there's quite a hefty amount of content to be found on a single disc. Gameplay isn't as refined as the games mentioned above, due of frequent tripping and floatier overall gameplay, but it's otherwise solid.
The N64 version of Super Smash Bros. simply doesn't age well compared to the later entries. It was a great game back in its heydays, but time has been cruel to it. The content is very slim, in which it's possible to unlock everything within a few hours on the game and the gameplay is as good as Brawl, albeit without tripping.
There are few games that have gripped me like Super Smash Bros. Melee. I love the Wii U version, but I can't get into it as much as when I was ten years old and at the peak of my Nintendo fanaticism.
Melee or Smash U, but I guess I'll go with Smash for Wii u.
Smash U- Nailed the physics and roster, Internet could be better but it's the best to date. Some fun single player modes but if it wasn't for the challenges I would not replay them as much. Smash Tour and a couple of the stage returns are terrible.
Melee- Incredible game, and the single player much better the Smash Wii U.
Brawl- The best Single player in the series and the roster was very exciting. Physics were holding it back and it's online
64- A classic to me but with its problems. Love the cartoony-ness of the game and loved the sound effects.
3DS- After the demo this game went downhill for it bad online, and limited Brawling. Single player also felt a little held back but Smash Run was enjoyable but not worth the hype.
1. Wii U, has the most of everything and BY FAR the best online.
2. 3DS, more limited than Wii U but it gets credit for being portable
3. Brawl, lots of content but non-functional online and looked ugly
4 (by far). Melee. I must be the only one who hates Melee's speed around here, never found it comfortable nor fun to play. Plus, the whole game always felt... unfinished for some reason. And before I get angry replies, I played Melee before Brawl.
Never played the original, so I can't speak for it.
I love the 3DS version but the Wii U version edges the top for me. These two games are the only ones in the series I can play for more than three or four matches before getting tired of it.
Plus, 8 player smash!
Melee and Smash Wii U are the best.
I didn't like the 3DS version at all. Brawl wasn't my cup of tea either. The N64 game is a classic, but it hasn't aged well.
I love Smash for Wii U, truly a top notch game. But the nostalgia glasses are on and that's why I have to give it to Melee. The game will always hold a special place in my heart because of all the good times with friends.
I love the original levels on the N64 game and I've probably logged the most hours into that version. I like the others (I never played Brawl though) as well, though I found Melee moved just too fast for me (especially compared to the original!). I am enjoying playing the Wii U version, but I really enjoy the portability of the 3DS version too. Overall, with Amiibo functionality added to the Wii U I give it the edge slightly over the 3DS portability and the memories of the original, but once the New 3DS is released in America I would probably vote for the 3DS. I am really hoping for the older levels released as DLC (I don't have time to make the levels and professionals would do a better job anyways), I think I would buy them all. All of them seem like great games.
It's impossible to choose between Melee and Smash U!
It gets easier to control each game. Kirby was such better from Melee to Brawl... then came Wii U. The only thing that I missed from Brawl was Kirby's Final Smash. Now I actually have to aim. /sigh/
Smash N64 - Awesome 10/10
Melee - Amazing 10/10
Brawl - Awesome 10/10
Smash 3DS - Blah 7/10
Smash Wii U - Awesome 10/10
I think Melee is the best in terms of gameplay. But I love them all equally, so I chose "I can't decide!"
@JasonAnArgoNOT64 Like @Storytime7 said i see no one here that's a so called melee fanatic hating on someone here for liking a smash bros game besides Melee.Don't know why you said that, you must really be looking for attention.
@Kaze_Memaryu I don't think you understand what the word 'Balance' means, since you described Melee with it. Melee has mostly clones in its roster and has some of the worst physics in the series. A laundry list of exploits and poor mechanics (the way Melee handles stage edges is atrocious and not even close to fair or even fun) make Melee the Smash that has aged the least well. Smash 64 is charming in its own way, especially at the time it was great. But Melee just doesn't hold up terribly well. Most people who dislike Smash Wii U tend to be the 'pro' players who enjoyed edge hogging and other exploits and didn't want the series to have anything that resembled common sense physics. Going back and playing Melee just this afternoon further emphasized how junk it is compared to Smash Wii U in every way: character selection, stage selection, single player experience, online play, stage creator, graphics, play speed etc. Smash Wii U is the new standard.
@Obito_Tennyson I know, right? In Brawl, you could just stay in place and then let the game do the rest. Now in Smash 3DS/Wii U you have to be precise. To make things worse, opponents can actually dodge it! But it's a powerful sword, anyway.
My best is.... ugh, I can't choose between Brawl and Smash U! I sunk in many hours in Brawl, but I just got Smash U and I'm loving it! I voted for Smash U in the end.
Hmm hard so I'll look at it from what I feel is the essence of smash the gameplay/technical side and in that regard:
1. Melee
2. Smash U
3. Smash 64
4. Smash 3DS
5. Brawl
@Kaze_Memaryu Melee the most balanced one ? what is this i dont even... The game is anything but balanced, not to mention its "pro scene" is based on glitches & exploits, it was a broken game
Smash 4 its million times more balanced and smoother, its not even close
Tough call. I want to say Melee, but the over the top competitive crowd has kind of got me away from it. At least PM isn't here. Not that it's bad it's just not an official game.
I think it's a bit unfair to divide Wii U/3DS into two options. Yeah they've got a few different modes but clearly the 3DS version is just a watered down edition of the Wii U game. I can only guess the 5% voting for it haven't played the Wii U version, so consider it the best.
Dang, that's a tough decision! Every Super Smash Bros. is very interesting and unique in their own ways. I really like each one and still play them to this day!
Small gripes aside, Smash Wii U has loads of content that I seriously appreciate more than ever before! The huge amount of music, the better online modes that are offered, balancing that seems to be the best so far (considering its huge roster), FE:Awakening characters, beautiful visuals, and there's still more to come! It's clear the team has been working hard to provide the best they could.
64 has the classic, simple style I love, Melee still never gets old with its fast game-play, and Brawl gave me character interactions that my kid-self would always dream of. My favorite Smash game is probably a question I'll never be able to answer, but in terms of quality in comparison, Smash Wii U is the winner!
Wii U... although I do miss playing Wolf & Snake.
I can't decide. I was so hyped for melee when it was coming out and unlocking everything in that game was challenging/fun. Brawl was only OK, but the 3ds/wii u versions are pretty excellent.
@Volke93 Don't worry. The only one I haven't played is Melee too.
People are still hyped for Smash Wii U, but if you look at the limitations, trends and oportunities at the time each one was released, its actually the worst... by far. The best would be Melee for competitive players and Brawl for lone wolves.
For me its: Brawl 9.5/10 > Melee 9 > N64 8 > 3DS 7 > WiiU 6
Wii U I guess...I just play the games for FUN. And the latest games are indeed fun, even better Mewtwo is returning, so...yeah. owo
Accidentally voted I can't decide, meant to go with Wii U. Looks like it'll win anyway.
@Yellowtails How is the Wii U reusing a bunch of things from Brawl? First of all there is the new 8 player Smash, then the new bigger stages, plus one with a background and foreground. Every stage also has a final destination version for competitive players. Then the classic, all star, and target smash mode have been revamped. Master Orders, Smash Tour(Which I'm not a big fan of), and Crazy Orders are all new modes. Stage Builder is also different but it still sucks. Random tripping during fights have been removed. That pretty much ruined Brawl when it came to competitive play. Also in the regular smash mode it plays like a Melee and Brawl hybrid. Every sequel recycles things from there past games in the series. Smash Melee from 64, Brawl from Melee, 3DS/ Wii U from Brawl. But for everything these games recycled they brought plenty of new things to the table.
I can't decide, they all have strengths and weaknesses that make it difficult to choose from.
Wii u, the only reason people don't realize how much of a progress it is is because of internet sceptics and sentiment. It really is a great game, much more well rounded and expressive at the same time.
I've only played the 3DS version, so. . .
Melee by an absolute, endless and bewilderingly long country mile. This site needs more older gamers!
There's just something magical about the 64 version. I loved the stages and the extra modes. It nowhere near compares in content to the one on the Wii U, which on a technical standpoint would have to be considered the best. But the original just has a charm that's hard to beat. I'm definitely nostalgic regarding that game.
Is this a joke? Wii U. PERIOD.
Melee is the most important, but Smash Wii U is the best.
8 Player mode alone just sets Wii U so far above the rest for me. I can actually play with all my friends without having to rotate off now, which is nice.
People talk about older games with this gleam or twinkle of nostalgia in their eyes, which is surprising that the Wii U is so preferred.
More so for myself, as I would rank them:
Melee
Smash 64
Brawl
3DS
Wii U
And at that, it's not even close.
As fighting games, they're dreadful.
As multiplayer games, they're all pretty equal.
But for single player, that's where they really seperate.
By that logic, the Wii U version is by far the least fun, the most congested and the least exciting of the bunch.
Nintendo basically removed everything that made any of the past single player modes fun and engaging and has really pigeonholed the series as multiplayer only.
Moving forward, Nintendo will have more difficulty selling systems with the next iteration, seeing as many non-Nintendo gamers are solo or enjoy storylines or cinematics. Keeping options open and not handcuffing themselves would have been smarter.
For what it does, Smash is great. For a full game, it's subpar.
Definitely have to go with Smash for Wii U seeing as it has the best roster, stages, and soundtrack of all the Smash games. For me there really is no contest.
I'd rank them as follows:
Wii U
Melee
3DS
Brawl
64
Shulk... I mean Smash for Wii U
Yay!!, Both in Maro Kart as Smash Bros polls, I can't decide, all showed things interestings (Music, Characters, Sceneries/Tracks, etc) and all are fun and enjoyible, really I can't decide which game is the best...
Before I say anything I just want to say that the order i played the games in is : brawl, melee, 64, 3DS, U
In my options, melee is the best for game play, even without the advanced techniques the game had the most solid fighting mechanics. Brawl was a mess, incredibly inbalanced and slow, I cant go back to it. 64 was fun to play on my phone, but it grew old quickly, the 3ds' controls clearly aren't made for a fighter like smash and the online was still fairly laggy. U was without a doubt the greatest game for casuals, and I am currently loving learning the new meta and matchups (my yoshi and my olimar are great atm ), although I wish the for glory more had other maps, platforms are used in competetive too, at least Battlefield and SmashVille shouldbe included. So sm4sh is great, but melee is still the king in my opinion.
Btw brawls singleplayer was not good! Smash is a fighting game not a platformer ;P
For me it is Melee. Brawl was just not for me and WiiU suffers from too much content
My list:
1. Wii U: Breath-taking graphics, amazing roster, fantastic modes, wonderful balance between characters, and best line between competitive and fun gameplay. Also, Mii's!!! Btw, can't forget, Mewtwo soon!
2.Brawl: Story mode that was just, WOW!
My main to be Sonic joined, Stage maker c: , and memorable hours of gameplay.
3.3ds: Suprisingly fantastic for a handheld, SMASH RUN!!! Master core on 3ds, yes! Smash on the go!!!
4. Melee: Amazing game, but new characters, features, and graphics overtook overtime also now that Mewtwo is coming, I don't have to worry about him only being in melee. I will remember moments with my first smash game though
5. 64: Well, I've never played 64 so, I can't say anything.
I think each Smash release is better than the previous so Smash Wii U wins for me.
Wii U. They have retained the gameplay of Melee and compiled it with the rich content that slow paced brawl had. Sakurai realized that u cant have a good fighting game without solid fighting physics...
My list. No explanations, because I just play whatever the games offer, whether fast paced or lacking content:
1) Smash Wii U
2) Brawl
3) Smash 3DS
4&5) Melee and 64. I've played these two games but I can't really judge them.
I chose Brawl over 3DS because IMO, Brawl had the better stages and better soundtrack. Also, I play Brawl with a controller that's easy to pull off Smashes - GameCube controller. Smash Wii U is faster than Brawl, and online is better. Playing with the GamePad is way way waaaay less scarier than I thought; in fact it's very comfy, although it's still a bit hard to Smash.
There's always so much bias for the most recent entries in the series, I hate when people just pick the most current one.
Smash Wii U is a really fun game, but I chose Melee. What Melee has over Smash 4 is that it can be played best casually and competitively. It's such a fun party game and easily accessible to anyone, but at the same time it's the best competitive game with a bunch of advanced techniques or as most people carelessly say 'exploits' involved. Don't get me wrong, Smash Wii U can be played competitively as well, but it's boring in that respect compared to it's older brother Melee. If I was just looking at the party/fun side of things, Smash 4 would win, but with both categories I'd say Melee wins overall.
Wow, I thought I was the only one who didn't think Melee was the best!
The Wii U version is shaping up to be my favorite (I haven't played 3DS yet). The online modes work well, everything is super polished and there are so many characters and stages to choose from. My few complaints are that there is no story mode and no Solid Snake or Roy.
While the Subspace Emissary was a little weird I wish they would have brought something like that back. It did a great job of helping you get better at using characters that you might not have normally chosen.
Melee is great and it was the one I spent the most time playing and I can see why people love it, but it isn't my favorite.
Super Smash Bros. on 3DS and Wii U are objectively the best games of the series. The poll is unnecessary, and there is no debate, period.
If something like wavedashing ever showed up in a game like Street Fighter, MK, etc, it would be a huge step backwards for those respective series, so it literally makes no sense why people would accept such an exploit like that in SSBM.
Wii U version for me, personally. It has literally all of my favorite video game characters in it, and the physics and speed just feel right.
Plus, it has better stages than the 3DS version, as well as more modes, features, and better online.
Smashbros Wii U is superior in content, online, characters, controls, etc. Melee just didn't age very well and Smashbros Wii U is just much newer and better.
P.S. -Wavedashing is incorporated into gameplay as an additional movement option. It's simply transferring your air dodge momentum diagonally into the ground to slide in a neutral position for a short distance. It's not a glitch as most people call it, it's just a creative use of Melee's physics. And for those out there who claim its an exploit, you've obviously never tried it. Just because you can wavedash doesn't mean you'll automatically start winning. Like I said, wavedashing is a form of movement and it's all about how you use it that counts. Also, the creators meant to put L-Canceling in Melee. And for @SCAR392, if Wavedashing was in Street Fighter and MK, it wouldn't change anything as those games aren't heavily focused on your movement around the stage as Smash is.
@Snivy102
Except that your movements in those games DO matter. WTF fighting games are you playing? I know it works, but it is more of a leeway for Melee having crappy physics. This is 100%; the truth.
@SCAR392 Have you never played a Smash game before? Do you realize how much more movement is involved in Smash than in games like Street Fighter and MK? In Smash, the player is constantly moving towards and away from their opponent to properly space attacks. I hear they often use the platforms to get around their opponents as well.... LOL. WTF kind of Smash games are you playing? Or should I say, how the heck do you play Smash? By standing in one spot most of the fight?
The Wii u one is the best to me. It just plays so awesome and has a crazy amount of characters to play with.
@2Sang
Same can be said about people having bias towards older ones because nostalgia..
Give me 64's characterization and modes with Melee's mechanics and Wii U's balance/roster.
@Snivy102
Ya. I've played a Smash Bros. game before. I agree that the movements can vary more in Smash Bros, but movement matters in the other games, too. Why do I even have to say that?
@SCAR392 I'm just saying there isn't enough movement in Street Fighter or MK that wavedashing would actually be useful.
Melee is probably my most played (although Brawl is going to be very close there) but picking my favorite it kind of impossible. I know my favorite is not the original even though I credit it as the game that got me into gaming in the first place. The only reason to consider the 3DS version is its exclusive modes and the portability, but it just plays differently than the Wii U version to me. Melee and Brawl both have a ton of nostalgia in their favor that makes it hard to count against them...
This is hard. I honestly can't decide.
1) Wii U
2) 3DS
3) Melee
4) Brawl
5) 64
3DS would be the best if not for its laggy online.
wii U by far.
The reason for brawl's lower vote count is because everyone either loves melee for competitive, speed or nostalgia and people who would choose brawl go for Wii U because it is much closer in terms of mechanics but beter overall in terms of roster and content (I am still sad about Snake not making it back, ah well).
Project M???
As only a casual observer looking in, original was okay, I played it a handful of times in store and that was enough. I picked up GC cheap when I got my Wii and had a bit of fun but was finished with it before too long. Wii version was not much fun and I regretted buying it. I played a bit of 3DS and my kids love the Wii U one and we have played my friends version and it's the most fun by a mile. If Smash Run could be on Wii U it would be even better.
We will buy Smash for Wii U soon.
@ZachBeacon I hadn't seen any bugs - what bugs did you get?
However at least you didn't get Xbox One, Hal Master Chief Collection and Assassin's Creed Unity level of bugs...
@Snivy102
Says the one who likes it in Smash Bros.
Smash Wii U. Best amount of content (though the lack of an Adventure Mode is unfortunate). Melee's great, but is not the best. 3DS is great for 1v1 matches and playing on the go. 64 started it all. Brawl was slower and more defensive, but had a great amount of content and introduced some much anticipated characters like King Dedede and Diddy Kong.
@hikingmudkip6 It's gone with the wind.
I love every game in the series, but Melee is probably my favorite and probably always will be, unless they make another game with similar gameplay to Melee
@2Sang I know god!What a bunch of idiots!Oh wait i picked smash Wiiu,damn.
I chose Melee, because it really build from there content-wise. The first one was small, while the second one was very big. It was also the biggest leap in the graphics-department (though Super smash Wii u also looks mighty fine). Super Smash Wii u probably feels better then Brawl, and almost no loading (while Brawl had huge loading times). But honestly all instalments are great fun.
Well this is a bit unfair. Of course the latest one is going to win! Other than Brawl, each new Smash Bros. is light-years better than the last
While I can't say which Smash is considered the "best" per say (again, no one can truly provide such an answer alone), I can say that my favorite thus far would have to be the Smash Bros. for 3DS. Even though the Wii U version has more content/features to it (I love the My Music feature in particular), I really enjoy having Smash Bros. on the go along with fact that I prefer the stage selection in that game overall (I enjoy damn near every stage they put into the 3DS one). And while other people may be over it, I still get a lot of enjoyment playing the Smash Run mode.
The Wii U version of course would take a very close 2nd place to it, while Brawl (for having Solid Snake and the Subspace Emissary) would fit in as 3rd favorite.
I'd say Wii U - especially because of how beautiful it looks and how smoothly it runs. While I'm a tad disappointed at no Subspace Emissary sequel, the other game modes more than make up for it - there's so much to do! That, and the roster is top-notch.
I honestly can't decide between Melee and SSB4 Wii U. While SSB4 Wii U definitely has the advantages of more a bigger roster, more stages, online mode, etc. (even if a lot of those newer stages and characters are questionable) there's a charm Melee has that I just can't get enough of.
1 wii U the best roster and the most jam packed game yet!2 melee great all around but has some bad stages..3SSB 3DS good game but some of the stages stink..4Brawl tripping and subspace emissary.....5SSB 64 ugh......this game sucks
My personal favorite out of them is Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. I have every single Smash Bros. game other than Melee, and I've always been wanting a portable Smash Bros. game, and for 3DS, it is the best 3DS game there is and I love playing it so much!!!
The general readership seems to have a tendency to simply vote for the newest instalment, so I would like to see a discussion and a vote between the Nintendo Life team.
I was tied between Wii U, 3DS, and Melee, so I chose I can't decide!
Never played one and I never plan to.
I voted for Wii U, but honestly the single player is lacking compared to the Melee/Brawl. However, when it comes to multiplayer, Wii U all the way.
Since Project M isn't here I'll have to go to the second choice Melee.
Come on Nintendo Life include Project M, it's a Smash game too .
I haven't played Smash 3DS (though I did play the Demo and the it felt horrible with the circle pad on a normal 3DS).
Between the rest of them: Objectively I'd have to go with Smash U since it has the best roster, music, stages, soundtrack and all around content. But I have so many fond memories of me playing Melee with a friend of mine on a daily basis. It was so much fun, I just have to go with Melee.
I went with the Wii U version, though I haven't played all of them and of course there's still the novelty of Smash U being new.
I chose Smash Bros. Wii U simply because it has the best character roster. I would put Brawl second because of all the memories of playing multiplayer with friends. I never owned Melee but I've played it a little with friends before. I bought Smash 64 on the virtual console but never played it much because I was more used to Brawl at the time.
@Franklin I've probably played more than 1500 hours of melee and I already know that I like SSB4 better. It's just like, really really awesome
U, even though it is little rough around the edges and feels little floaty. My gf and I have a blast playing. And roster is nice - it took them a long time to acknowledge Duck Hunt and Little Mac, which is kinda sad.
@Nimious FANgame, not a true Smash Bros. Game.
Melee: Best for competitive players
Wii U: Best for casual players
Wii U: The Best
I'm so glad that the Wii U version is winning over Melee, those fanboys get on my nerves.
I choose Brawl as it's the only Smash game to have a fantastic single player experience.
Smash Wii U. Not Melee.
Either way glad to see Melee pulling in a strong second place.
It's between SmashBros.64 for the massive amounts of great memories, or SmashBros.WiiU for the...for everything lol.
SmashBros.WiiU it is!
Who did the picture?
@Faruko Oh please, that's just nonsense. First off, the glitches in Melee are mostly not even remotely practical enough to be useful in competitive play. Secondly, any player who tries to abuse a glitch in a tournament will be disqualified instantly, so your entire argument is null.
@bobbypaycheque Physics have absolutely nothing to do with balancing. The physics in Melee were a bit weird at times, yeah, but nothing that makes the game unplayable unless you're just terrible at it. Also, Smash 4 isn't even consistent with its physics (Maryio Galaxy stage, Sonic: Lost World stage).
I agree on the ledge physics, those are better in Smash 4. And that's about it in favour of that rip-off of a game.
....character selection, stage selection, single player experience, online play, stage creator, graphics, play speed etc. Smash Wii U is the new standard...
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Oh, you're serious? Pffff... alright, here we go.
The character selection in Smash 4 is filled with characters, but barely any of them are properly balanced.
The new stages rely more on hazard gimmicks and terrible layout than ever before, which makes them more annoying than anything. The only good stages were the ones taken over from Melee and Brawl.
Now, seeing you say that the pathetic single player in Smash 4 is supposedly better than any other Smash, that's just the wrongest of the wrong. There's practically nothing challenging in Smash 4, from Classic (which forces 5-8 player matches onto you, which are terrible in every way) to Mission Mode (which is boring and uncreative), all the way to the lack of individual character challenges, make Smash 4 the most horrible Single Player game Nintendo made in a long time.
Online play didn't exist on the GameCube (except for PSO), and Smash 4 still has no proper matchmaking whatsoever, not to speak of the lag and input delay.
The Stage Creator is just as much of an argument as Minecraft: it depends on creativity, and has no saying about the actual game content or quality.
Graphics are a point where Melee can't win, but that stands to reason. The art direction of both games isn't really that much superior of one another, though.
Play Speed is another joke. It is CONFIRMED, even by Sakurai himself, that the game plays slower than Melee, so don't even try. And slower is never better, just lazier on the development side.
So, to conclude things: calling Smash 4 "the new standard" is hypocrisy at its finest. It's far too flawed to hold a candle in most regards, and even though it could change through patches, it's doubtful Nintendo or Sakurai realize just what is wrong eith this game.
First and foremost I love portable gaming. Particularly portable games that are full fledged and not a cheap knockoff. Smash 3DS is gorgeous and has to be my fav. I love Smash Run!
As someone who never played Melee (I know right?) I feel my vote is kind of false but out of the ones I have played For Wii U is certainly best. It brought so much to the table and is just what the Wii U needs.
@Kaze_Memaryu You know, it's this defensive behaviour that gives Melee-players a bad name. Please let people have their opinions on what counts as content or not, what play speed they prefer or whether or not they see some ATs as exploits or glitches or whatever. You'll only cause unnecessary negativity otherwise.
1. Wii U
2. Brawl
3. 3DS
4. 64
5. Melee
Gotta say Brawl for two reasons. Subspace Emissary, and the stage creator. I created dozens of stages with that, but the WiiU one just doesn't measure up.
I like all the Smash Bros games in some way or another, but at the end of the day Melee is the one I return to the most...well, technically that would be Project M, but Melee is a close second to that.
I do play Smash 4 a lot more these days mostly on account of it being new, and as long as it has online it definitely will have its place alongside Melee but...after I sat down and compared it side by side with Brawl, 3DS in one hand and controller in the other it's astoundingly similar to Brawl. The pace of the game isn't that much faster than Brawl and movement-wise it's identical, with the main difference being you don't have to worry about tripping. The ledge-mechanics are hit and miss, while I appreciate the removal of planking and balancing of certain recoveries it does contribute to the slower pace of the match. And disappointingly, a large amount of music was completely reused from Brawl, and a lot of the stages being basically not fun to play on because of the mechanics and hazards they employ.
Stage-wise 64 probably has my favorite set of stages, but Smash 4 has the edge with its character roster. I still enjoy the controlled chaos of Melee's gameplay the most though, especially as movement is very important in Smash Bros and it being as smooth and controlled as possible should be a priority. Not necessarily to the point of bringing back wave-dashing, but aerial momentum and the number of options you have out of dash contribute a lot to Melee's feel.
I'm still sticking with Smash 4 being superior in all ways. Saying Smash 4 is more casual is literally just a cop-out. We've seen competitive Melee players get their rear ends beat by people at Nintendo that merely had access to the game sooner. Their knowledge from Melee doesn't entirely apply to the new game, that's why people refuse moving on to the new game.
That one competitive Melee player complaining about the ledge mechanics in Smash 4 doesn't really know what he's talking about, if he really thinks that.
Wii U. OH MY ****ING GOD. THIS SMASH GAME...it's amazing. If you don't already have a Wii U, I'd get it just for this game. Seriously. (There are other games that make the U worthwhile but this is currently the best, no joke)
@SCAR392 That's a lot of generalization you're making there.
A few different pro players have given the new game a shot, including Hungrybox and Chillindude, and they do well because the fundamentals do transfer from game to game. If they choose to go back to Melee, it'll only because they prefer Melee's gameplay to the new game.
If the mechanical differences and knowledge required being different was truly a factor in competitive games, people wouldn't have moved on to newer iterations of Street Fighter or other fighters, or even within Smash they wouldn't play Project M or Smash 4.
It was hard to decide since my main, Lucas, was and probably will be only in Brawl. But, Wii U is the overall better game, so my vote goes to Wii U.
It's strange that Smash Run, is probably the most fun mode to play Solo or With friends on Smash Bros, yet, Smash Run is only on 3DS which it's probably the worst version of all.
@KeithTheGeek - The first part is 100% not a generalization. If any Melee player ever says Smash 4 is "for casuals", compared to Melee, they need to step the f*** outside.
I know most of the mechanics carry over, but there are improvements that you literally can't ignore from Melee to Smash 4. People should be able to play at any speed, and all fighting games have their balancing issues and supposed top tier lists. Get the f*** over it, and I'm not talking to you specifically about this; just the overall attitude I always see online about Smash Bros, or any game with a split fanbase.
@SCAR392 Nice, so rather than address the points I made you just keep going on this tangent.
What improvements did Smash 4 make to Melee/Brawl? How do the mechanical changes affect the flow of the match? What's the most viable method for performing well in the meta game?
You can argue for Smash 4 being a viable competitive game, and I would be inclined to agree. However, even with the fundamentals intact what styles of game play perform well in Smash 4 are different from what works well in Melee.
Personally, I prefer Melee- the defensive options presented are stronger than in Smash 64 where shielding can literally be the end of your stock, but they're not nearly as powerful as in Brawl or Smash 4. I also prefer the quicker pace the match takes on thanks to more/better movement options. In Brawl and Smash 4 (to an extent) a lot of the game is spent in neutral and poking at your opponent to make mistakes. This is also true to a point in 64/Melee, but once you push the game into your favor you can keep pressuring your opponent and keep the match at the pace you set. Edge-guarding is also a calculated risk you must make because you simply can't get back to the stage as easily as in the later games. I think this makes Melee simply more FUN at this level of play because it encourages smart offensive play rather than a focus on slower, more methodical gameplay. Neither way is "wrong" but saying that one game is a straight improvement over the other without offering any reasoning and telling people who like the older game to get over themselves is just being a bit close minded
Wii u beats them al for me.
@KeithTheGeek - The physics are improved, and the controls can vary more, with more precision. Timing also matters more in Smash 4, because of said improved physics and precision, with the controls obviously being left to the player.
Even something as simple as air dodging being limited to one per air time, in Melee, can be extremely limiting to people who can dodge multiple attacks in one assualt.
You can be just as defensive as you can offensive, and that goes for any of the Smash games, even Brawl. Smash 4 just has more stuff going on, and that can't even be represented by the type of speed Melee has, so you can either choose the speed of Melee, or enhanced mechanics at a slower speed. The same mechanics were in Brawl, but they were sped up for Smash 4, and Melee doesn't even have those mechanics at all. Characters like Zero Suit Samus or Olimar would have taken years to program for GCN, which is why we finally got them on new consoles like Wii and Wii U. People didn't know how to program as well, back then, so you are literally missing out on new stuff like mechanics, physics, content(characters, modes, etc), graphics, amiibo, etc. if you decide to stay back with Melee, because that stuff was impossible for GCN, at the time. This is all taking hardware, development time/effectiveness, and gaming concept into consideration that GCN just didn't have, period.
I have to go with Melee. It was one of the first, if not the first, video game I've ever played. I still play it.
Smash Wii U is second. I have some problems that if they weren't there, it'd top Melee:
Other than that, it is a wonderful game.
U
Definitely Smash U. The awesome roster (Miis! Mega Man! Sonic and Pac-Man too!), amazing visuals and soundtrack, omega forms for every stage (which are also awesome), great single player, and great balance and gameplay. Everything is just awesome about this game!
I've never played Melee, but honestly it doesn't look all that special. 64 is just ok but feels kind of clunky. I haven't played Smash 3DS all that much but it's very fun.
Brawl is also a lot of fun but the randomness really holds it back- loved the Subspace Emissary though. I wish they had left it in the Wii U version. Imagine a campaign with the new roster!
I'm going to go with Smash U. It's got the most diverse roster, the best control options and I think the amiibos are a great addition to the experience. Lv. 50 is like playing a competitive match with another player.
I knew the results of this and the Mario Kart one before even clicking on them. Like most polls of this nature, most people will just pick the most recent one without even giving it any thought. (though I'm sure many have picked them for legitimate reasons).
@MadAdam81 You haven't heard all the coverage where people get banned from online play for 100+ years or systems getting bricked?
@Kaze_Memaryu Typical Melee fan preaching their preference as gospel. Faster ISN'T always better. That presumption alone is ridiculous. Melee is an inconsistent mess, inconsistency makes for a poor gaming experience, especially in a fighting game. And again, especially in a fighting game, more speed doesn't = better. Smash 4 has a MUCH better range of characters that operate at different speeds, Fox is very fast in Smash 4. Smash 4 is a MUCH more polished experience that Melee ever was. The gameplay is much improved as would be expected from a game made now as opposed to many years ago. Improvements were made. Much needed improvements to balance, far superior ledge mechanics and play speed. If you can't move on from Melee that's fine, but that really is just your preference and does not represent the majority who embrace the improvements made in Smash 4.
@Jmaster Don't bother man, Melee fan. Melee fans believe that all the exploits and horrible edge mechanics were put there on purpose and that their opinion is the only one that matters. They also tend to think that Smash games should only be made for the few dozen people who compete at EVO. Why make a fun and balanced game right? Just make a Smash game with lots of exploits and horrible mechanics that 'pros' can master over a decade. Trying to reason with them is a pointless exercise, they are fanboys.
I went with Melee because I'm a purist and believe that Smash Bros. should not include non-Nintendo characters, so there! Also because it was such a big leap from the original. Plus its ideal controller (GameCube) was the default controller of the console. It's the perfect, pure Smash Bros.
@bobbypaycheque Friendo i think you rustled @Kaze_Memaryu jimmies. His jimmies are rustled beyond repair,it's all ogre now.
@midnafanboy LOL! A sense of humor makes all the difference!
Since I got a Wii U for Christmas, I went out and purchased Smash Wii U. I haven't played it enough to make a full decision, but so far it's fun, stunning, and brilliant. Although the bright colors tend to strain my eyes.
Then which Smash stole my heart? Brawl. So many fond memories make this game the best in the franchise for me.
@Kaze_Memaryu Wow. It's pretty sad that you wrote all that.
@ZachBeacon Oh yeah, I heard of the banning but that was the result of a couple of minor bugs the first being people using Peach's item in a no item battle, but I never heard of anyone's console getting bricked, and I am sure it wasn't reported here (unless I missed it).
Probably the only bugs but only for an online feature that the first two games never even had - even if those bans didn't get overturned, how is a buggy online mode that is fun to play until you accidentally get banned worse than no fun online mode?
@MadAdam81 1. Super Smash Bros. For Wii U. It has so much content, especially music. It introduced Amiibo. It features Robin and Lucina, who overtook Marth as my favorite fighter in Smash Bros. series. I got so immersed in the game. There's Special Orders mode. It has the most tough challenges. It capitalizes on multiplayer, and there's 8-player Smash. I love Target Blast. There's so much more you can do in the game.
2. Super Smash Bros. For Nintendo 3DS. It has the same roster as Super Smash Bros. For Wii U but less content, due to the limitations of the Nintendo 3DS, and fewer multiplayer options. However, I do love Smash Run.
3. Super Smash Bros. Melee. Melee was revolutionary. It helped bring my favorite Nintendo franchise Fire Emblem to North America. It introduced trophies and Stadium modes like Multi-Man Smash and Home Run Contest. It was releases shortly after 9/11.
4. Super Smash Bros. The Nintendo 64 original started it all. It was limited and developed on a low budget. I had so much memory of the game. I played it extensively when I was in college.
5. Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It's just another Smash Bros. game. IMO, it's the black sheep of the series. I was so disappointed about the roster and the Fire Emblem representation. However, I enjoy the soundtrack. What's best the game is Subspace Emissary.
Wii U because we (my family of six) can all play at the same time now. + Amiibo's which are fun to train and train against.
I went with the N64 version. Perhaps it's nostalgia, perhaps I'm just old and crappy at smash...
Some people consider the N64 version "limited" or "barebones." I find it to be clean. I can actually see where my character is on the screen, because the stages aren't bigger than the TV with a million different things going on. The roster was small, but the important core characters were there. The only issue was it was a lot easier to resort to "cheap" moves.
@Yellowtails Not to be rude but the fighting doesn't feel much like Brawl. It is more fast paced than Brawl, but slower than Melee. Besides, I didn't find Brawl to be that bad. The only thing I hated was the random tripping. As for the music they do have some recycled theme songs but for every recycled song there is a new one. Brawl also recycled a hell of a lot of music from 64 and Melee. Melee also recycled music from 64. Not everything in a game is going to be new. Is recycling bad? No, as long as it isn't all recycled and features plenty of new content. Examples of games that are copy and paste are the New Super Mario Bros. games. All of them are pretty much the same except with different power-ups.You also didn't even mention what SSB for Wii U recycled from Brawl in your previous comment so how was I supposed to know you were referring to the game's music. All you said was the Wii U version recycled too much from Brawl.
@Ninty4thewin 1v1 on the wii u is the only way I play and its really good.
Wii U and 3DS obviously go above the others because of their rosters, and Wii U obviously is better than 3DS because of all its exclusive features. Melee and Brawl I'd have to tie for third place. I've played a lot of the both of them, and I just can't place on over the other. Brawl had a ton of content, but Melee had some of my favorite characters and better balance. Also for some reason I feel that Melee just "felt" right. Maybe that's just because of nostalgia, seeing as it was the first video game I hadd ever played. Smash 64 was ugly and didn't have a lot of what made later entries special. Perhaps it's because it's the only one I didn't play when it came out, but I just don't like it.
Far too many Japanese no name characters in the new installment to garner my vote. I mean.. cmon where is big diapy (k rool) or a variety of other well known characters? Heck i'd even take Ravio over another animed out character.
@Jmaster I don't see why. I'm explaining why Melee is better on a technical end, nothing else. The actual issue is that fans of Brawl/Smash 4 try to force the newer title as an improvement when it really isn't - it's comparable to the CoD fanbase, where every new entry gets praised at first, and it takes a good amount of time until they see the actual qualities and shortcomings.
Technically, you could argue that Melee fans do the same I'm accusing Brawl/Smash 4 fans of, but that's only partially true. People like me are actually waiting for a new Smash that is simply better, because Melee blew me away. But it's very bitter when you realize that the things that made (and still make) Melee great are being abandoned for no good reason. And I, for one, have a hard time accepting a game thst simply lacks a good number of intricate choices which hold back its true potential.
@bobbypaycheque Which Smash you prefer is your thing, but don't try to label me as a Melee fanboy just because I state flaws in Smash 4 that make it an underwhelming experience that should've been much better than it ended up being.
That said, I told you that the ledge mechanics in Smash 4 are better, so you still pointing at that is pretty cheap when pretty much nobody prefers the old ledge mechanics to the ones in ProjectM/Smash 4.
Also, you can state that the balancing was better all day, it's still not true. Greninja nerfs (no more air-cancels and overly high smash recovery), Diddy Kong's air game (overpowered air-juggling) and Little Mac in general (no air/anti-air game = no chance) are the most blatant examples, and while the veterans retained their balancing to a point, many new characters still aren't. There are certain standards surrounding proper balancing, and Smash 4 is evidently further away from these standards than Melee, like it or not.
And just to add it: lower game speed is lazier from a development standpoint, not in terms of gameplay. But characters like Marth, which barely changed since Melee at all, gain too many attack frames from the lower game speed (Brawl was ridiculous in that regard), making Counter and Smash attacks too powerful.
Really, you don't seem to get what I'm saying. I present facts that show that Smash 4 simply lacks in aspects Nintendo got right many years ago. I'm not telling you not to have fun, and I'm also not saying that Smash 4 isn't fun at all, but it still has flaws that are hardly excusable when they got it down before, and now don't.
I don't mind you preferring Smash 4 over the rest, but you're so stuck on false accusations that you seemingly can't accept that the appeal of Melee is based on what it does right, not what it does wrong, just like it is with Smash 4. I can accept people liking it, since that's what matters to them.
Smash 4 offers things that make it fun (online, multiplayer, huge roster, individualizations, and so on...), there's no denying that, but you trying to undermine Melee by stating false accusations against both the game and its fans is the entire issue here.
@midnafanboy I... still don't get what that means. Oh well.
@Kaze_Memaryu Jimmies have been rustled means that you got mad and lost your cool friendo.
@midnafanboy I guess I did, then. Thanks!
@Kaze_Memaryu First of all let me say that I appreciate you staying mature, unlike some other people here. But my original comment still holds true, you're still forcing your opinions on others. The things that made Melee so great for you might not be so enjoyable for others, conversely what you dismiss as 'lost potential' or 'bad choices' might actually be an improvement for others. Again, it's this my-opinion-equals-fact attitude that gives people who prefer Melee a bad rep.
@Jmaster Hm, I see now what you mean.
I admit that I can be very aggressive in my argumentation (I showed that maybe a few times too often), but be assured that I'm not forcing opinions. It might seem forceful, but I'm simply counter-argumenting. After all, I'm not refuting anyone's opinion.
But follow the start of the discussion: I was viewing the entire game series by objective standards, and got a reply that stated false information as genuine. In return, I went into greater detail about the objective technical flaws. Of course, everything can be an opinion, but by extending that thought, some opinions would simply be wrong.
For example, I could state that Final Fantasy VII has better graphics than Final Fantasy X, and while it could be my opinion (though it definitely isn't), it would be just plain wrong.
Now, don't take it the wrong way, I'm not saying others are wrong in liking certain things, but there are certain things people cannot have an opinion about, where clear standards have been established that simply have no choices, only right and wrong. I don't even have a problem with people preferring something "wrong" (like using glitches to beat certain games), but I was speaking out aginst lies. which is an entirely different matter.
@Kaze_Memaryu I see. Thank you for explaining, and again thanks for staying mature (you won't believe what kinds of childish dip[nope]s are on other forums).
@Jmaster Haha, yeah. I couldn't really deal with Melee-ists, either.
And thanks for the patience, mate! ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ
Kinda sad to see why many people tend to pick the most modern stuff these days. I do believe that brawl was pretty much the most satisfying thing to happen in my life, i still remember those days when I would make up some stories about Nintendo characters and was excited to see my dream come true in brawl. However, with this new game and amiibo, it just doesn't seem to meet my standards that brawl gave me. Say what you all want, Super smash brawl was the best hands down.
