Re: Nintendo Teases How The ‘Gacha’ Mechanic Works In Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

ArcticEcho

@Nintendo-or-Noth Trend setter in what way? Every mechanic in this game is from a different game. Weapon durability from Far Cry 2 and some others, crafting from Minecraft, climbing and gliding from Assassin's Creed, building goofy vehicles out of big chunky parts in Banjo Nuts & Bolts. Now there's this vending machine from every smartphone game ever. The only really new mechanic is you can stick a mushroom to a shield, or stick a rock on a stick, lol... And they want $70.

I just cannot get excited for this game. Every detail they put out is a major eyeroll to me. I just don't get this new direction for Zelda. It's like this goofy combination of Assassin's Creed, Minecraft, Far Cry 2, and Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts. They really need a 2D Zelda, or some kind of spin-off, because this mainline Zelda is just getting too far into youtube clickbait territory.

Re: Hands On: Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp - Slicker, Shinier, Sassier Strategy

@Anti-Matter It's like Fire Emblem but completely amazing. It's probably one of the best game series in existence. Sadly this is only a remake of 1 & 2, when 3 & 4 are way better. For the gameplay, you capture cities/factories/ports/airports, and get money from them on a per turn basis. You spend the money on units and repairs/fuel/ammo for units, and use those units to capture more places to give you more money. With the goal of capturing the enemy HQ.

Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online N64 Library With Another Game Next Week

ArcticEcho

@Porky People don't look at their options, they're just like give me Charizard, when Charmeleon probably has better type coverage or Charmander has better moves. They also get salty that they're not as good at Pokemon as they think they are. I want more Pokemon games like Stadium, because I love battling, but don't have the drive to screw around with EVs/IVs and breeding for hundreds of hours. EVs are nonsense, they should just give you points to assign to stats.

Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online N64 Library With Another Game Next Week

ArcticEcho

I love how the major complaint with people is that Pokemon Stadium is hard without the transfer pak. Oh no, it's a Pokemon game that actually requires thought and strategy. The Pokemon are actually pretty balanced. Weak Pokemon have the best moves, and strong Pokemon have the worst moves, so you have to actually like weigh your options. They should have just went for Stadium 2 though.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The New Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Trailer?

ArcticEcho

@Sonicka You got the opposite impression of what I said. The Zelda is what's been derailed. Zelda is underwhelming because Monolithsoft is busy working on stuff that they want to make. I think the Xenoblade games are way higher quality than BoTW and BoTW:2 copy and pasted. I played BotW for 70 hours waiting for it to get good. I played XC2 & Torna for over 400 hours. I had not played any Xenoblade before that, and played nearly every Zelda. Zelda has become Youtube content creator fodder just like Metal Gear Solid(5). They couldn't be bothered to write an adventure, so they outsourced it to the player. They gave us a game engine, and told us to to make our own scenarios. That's fine for a new IP, but not Zelda. And if they want to go that heavy sandbox route, make it for PC so it can have a proper modding community like Cities Skylines or something.

Re: Warside Blasts Onto Kickstarter With Advance Wars-Inspired Turn-Based Tactics

ArcticEcho

@Solomon_Rambling I love Advance Wars, but I was upset that the new release is just Advance Wars 1+2, instead of 3 or 4, or just a new one. The reason is the first two only have the boring units and mechanics. I love Dual Strike and Days Of Ruins, because they have the more specialized units and more interesting mechanics like units getting more experienced as they gain kills. The unnecessary additions look fun to me. They have less obvious units here, and I appreciate that immensely. What I see here looks more interesting than Advance Wars 1+2 Bootcamp. They didn't need a remake, they needed a new entry.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Atelier Game On Switch?

ArcticEcho

@Andee They're actually pretty short, around 30 hours. The first two trilogies are like Persona or Fire Emblem: Three Houses, in that they have heavy time-management mechanics though. You have to like that sort of thing. The difficulty is all over the place too.

Re: Game Boy And GBA Coming To Switch Online Today

ArcticEcho

@Chapapa Sometimes we don't want to have to drag all of our stuff out when we want to play something, and sometimes it's not worth $90 to buy a semi-rare game I don't have. I'm already paying $20 a month for online, why not pay $50 to be able to play all my favorite N64 games without having to go into basement and drag out an N64. I have four consoles hooked up already.

Re: It's Official, Total Switch Sales Have Now Surpassed The Game Boy And PS4

ArcticEcho

@Anti-Matter It took Gamefreak several entries to get the most out of the DS and 3DS. They won't be making proper PS3 level games until 2026, imo. The game after the game after Scarlet/Violet will probably look good enough for most of us. I'm not defending them, I'm just realistic about what Gamefreak is. I didn't even buy Scarlet/Violet because it looked worse than Arceus and SW/SH. A Pokemon game that's beautiful would need to be outsourced to good developers, kinda like Pokemon Stadium or Colosseum was.

Re: Review: Fire Emblem Engage - Relationships Get Sidelined By A Thrilling Combat-First Focus

ArcticEcho

@Bret Well, the fact that Fire Emblem Heroes exists, kind of proves my point that it's very much just a gacha game about collecting attractive characters. It doesn't necessarily have to be super pandering, but it's clear with all the petting and what not, in the recent entries. The deal is I wouldn't care about any of this, if I thought the main gameplay was engaging. Permadeath is a drag, all the units aren't that unique from each other, and the AI is predictable. You could turn off permadeath, but then it's just super easy. I think Fire Emblem could be great, but it needs a lot of work. Giving any of these games a 9 is extremely generous, the very best of this series is only worth a 7. It's like Pokemon, every time they improve one aspect, they ruin two to three others.

Re: Review: Fire Emblem Engage - Relationships Get Sidelined By A Thrilling Combat-First Focus

ArcticEcho

@Not_Soos I'm an otaku weeb, and I honestly don't recommend Fire Emblem at all. I have played every entry starting from Sacred Stones on GBA, and they are without hyperbole, all exactly the same game. Fire Emblem cannot and will never hold a candle to Advance Wars. Because of permadeath, every unit, though they have their own personality, are not important to the story in the least. If you don't like the main gameplay there is nothing to get invested in at all, because the characters don't matter, and the story is usually terrible, especially the newer ones. I'd get Three Houses cheap, and see if you can tolerate it. The AI aren't even interesting. You just throw a unit into their range, and they bum rush it. Fire Emblem exists only because anime boobs sell, not because it's a good strategy game. It's basically Disgaea, but easier to get into.
