Beloved GameCube farming sim Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life is coming back to our consoles this year, and we can't wait. Even though it's now a Story of Seasons game instead of a Harvest Moon one... even though the characters are all redesigned... and even if [REDACTED] doesn't die in the remake (although we would be a little disappointed).
If you're looking for all the details on the game, including release dates, trailers, character redesigns, and more, then look no further, farmy friend — we've got all the info in one place for you.
Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life details, images, trailers, and MORE!
Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life Release Date
In Japan, SoS: AWL comes out on January 26th, 2023. In the west, it'll be out on June 27th, 2023.
Similar delays between Japan and everywhere else are not uncommon in the Story of Seasons franchise — the Friends of Mineral Town remake took an extra nine months, Trio of Towns on 3DS took seven months, and Pioneers of Olive Town had just one month between releases — so rest assured that it's nothing sinister or catastrophic.
Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life - the story so far
Unlike other long-awaited titles like Pikmin 4 and Metroid Prime 4, AWL has a much simpler timeline.
First announced in the September 2022 Nintendo Direct, we were able to see the return of many of the features of the original 2004 GameCube game, like marriage candidates, familiar sound effects, and the aging mechanic that A Wonderful Life introduced to the series.
Since then, it's been relatively quiet, although there have been a few extra announcements:
- The game is also coming to PS5, Xbox S|X, and Steam
- There will be a physical edition for all consoles, which comes with a goat plushie (NA only)
What is Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life?
Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life is a remake of the original 2004 GameCube game, Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life, one of the best-selling Harvest Moon games of all time (and many people's favourite even to this day).
In A Wonderful Life, you play as a young male farmer who takes over his father's farm with just a dog, a cow, and an empty field. What made the game remarkable was that it actually had an overarching plot that continued for 30 years, as your farmer married, had a child, grew old, and eventually died, with your son choosing a different career based on how you raised him.
Later, a remake called Another Wonderful Life let you play as a female farmer, with the chance to marry one of three bachelors and have a daughter instead of a son. There was also a PS2 game called Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life Special Edition which still forced you to play as a man, but added one extra bachelorette, Lumina, and let you have a daughter.
In terms of the actual game, you'll be raising animals, growing crops, and getting to know people in the town. Here's the blurb from the game page:
A Familiar Farm for a New Generation ‒ Revisit this iconic community with updated systems, character designs, and visuals that revitalize Forgotten Valley while maintaining the charm that made the original a classic.
Your Story, Your Way ‒ With the option to play as a male, female, or non-binary protagonist, as well as all eligible marriage candidates available for romance regardless of that choice, players can truly be who they want.
Farming Simulation Evolved ‒ The original farming features have been updated, bringing new excitement to the carefree life of growing crops and raising animals.
Living a Wonderful Life is More Than Just Farming ‒ While taking a break from your daily farm work, befriend memorable characters in the valley, help fellow residents with requests, and experience all-new events.
Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life Marriage Candidates
You can now marry any of the women or men that you could marry in A Wonderful Life, A Wonderful Life Special Edition, or Another Wonderful Life with no restrictions, as well as Gordy/Cody, who could not be married before.

Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life Screenshots
There are roughly a kazillion screenshots out there, so we've tried to pare it down to just the good ones:

Wait, what happened to Harvest Moon?
Story of Seasons is the continuation of the Harvest Moon series, but Natsume — the company that originally translated the games — currently has the rights to the Harvest Moon name (and nothing else). They like to release their Harvest Moon games around the same time as Story of Seasons, we suspect to capitalise on the confusion between the two — and their next offering, Winds of Anthos, will also be launching in Summer 2023.
Stay tuned for all the Story of Seasons news you could ever want, and let us know in the comments what features, new ideas, events, and returning characters you'd like to see in the finished game.

Really neat we get to marry anyone regardless of gender! =) I haven't kept up with this series or Harvest Moon since Another Wonderful Life on the GCN. I'm glad to see they have made that change.
The things I remembered from PS2 version was the emptiness of the world map.
There was not many interesting places to visit so I really hope the remake version have a lot of things to do.
The changes I like so far was the gay marriage option so I wanna get married with the dudes, having boy kids and watching my kid grow up with two daddies. That will be epic. 😁
It looks worse than the original game in a lot of shots.
Me, Nami and a daughter. I’m ready. I’m not cheating Laura I swear!
I had this for my gamecube. Still have it somewhere. Not really into farming games, but this was sweet. So I'll happily grab this one for old times sake.
Want to get this playing pioneer of olive town at mo. Amazing game nice chill out game. Something is keep and replay
Also, judging from the screenshots, looks like Marvelous using their Japanese names without changes into English version.
I saw Cecilia instead of Celia, Molly instead of Muffy (Mumu in actual Japanese pronounce), Pasaran & Kesaran instead of Patrick & Kasey, Matthew instead of Marlin, etc.
Celia is best girl!
I enjoyed the original at the time, though I haven’t played it in ages. What I remember was really getting into my own little section of the world and living a life with my character. You start to form a bond that’s hard to explain, and the “ending” just wasn’t something you often saw at that time.
Having said all that, part of me wonders if there’s only so many times I can explore the whole “start a new life as a farmer and build a family” plot device in gaming. We’ve now reached the point where we’ve tackled it a bunch of different ways.
Still, for all the memories I have with the original, I probably won’t be able to help but give it one more go.
Depending on price I might pick it up. There are just always so many good games coming out! I loved It's a Wonderful Life on the GameCube even though you couldn't make a penny on farming.
i might picked this up looks interesting.
I played this during a sleepy summer on GCN back in my teens.
It was so freaking whimsical. The towns folk had an air of mystery behind them.
Never beat it, but loved it.
The copy I had on GCN would always corrupt the data after the 1 year mark, so I never truly got to play it. That being said, I'm looking forward to it working.
Having to marry and have a kid was the biggest mistake of the original.
Too bad you can't buy the original games (BTN, FOMT, etc) with superior character portraits. I'm still missing more friends of mineral town.
@ComfyAko just let people have an adoption option
@ComfyAko
I agree.
I mean why do we have to get married in A Wonderful Life ?
The game forces you to find a lover to be your spouse or it will be GAME OVER.
Even you can get GAME OVER quickly by answering NO from Takakura for taking care of the farm or not.
So basically A Wonderful Life was a linear farming sim game which you have to get into family life or else.
And also the marriage itself looked like a non formal way of wedding. You walked with your lover then introduced to other villagers that you were getting married, without any attributes that tell you you were already getting married.
Well, there was No Mayor, No church and No Town square to celebrate that important moment, one of the biggest mistake in A Wonderful Life.
I loved the original but it got boring fast. With no festivals it was a slough after a while. I'm excited to see what was all added in this
I've said it before, but I'll say it again. I hope they bring the sprinkler system from Pioneers of Olive Town to this remake.
My latest playthrough in the original version has me spending almost all day watering my crops, leaving me with no time to do anything else.
So having that sprinkler system would really help me out, especially when I'm trying to woo some of the more difficult bachelorettes, like Nami and Lumina.
@EaglyTheKawaiiShika Adoption with the "return upon dissatifaction" option
That would be one thing, but the compulsion to have a family is a bad choice in the first place.
@Anti-Matter I remember this too, the world felt kinda lifeless and boring, which is definitely not what you want in a game called "A Wonderful Life". I played quite a few Harvest Moon games, but this one always struck me as a little "lonely" feeling.
@aozgolo
Check this first look video from YouTube.
I didn’t like this game at all, tried so hard to like it on the game cube but it was just plain boring to me.
I'm hoping it uses the PS2 timescale. Always wanted to finish the game, and put significant headway into it as a kid, but there's just far too much time of nothing happening but you just passing time waiting to reach the next chapter. And of course the PS2 version has its own problems, mostly in that it chugs quite badly and really just feels like you're continually moving in sludge, so if this can carry over its quality of life improvements while feeling more like the Gamecube version I'm considering that a win.
@ComfyAko If I may get on a high horse for a second your nor wrong. I just think we could benefit from focusing on adoption.
I really hate movies or TV shows where a character thinks thier adopted and then realizes thier not and it’s a huge relief. Sure most stuff is pro adoption but I think more people should be trying to put it in a positive ligh
@EaglyTheKawaiiShika well that was a poor joke on my side. Yeah, I think adoption should be considered as something normal. It's just that there is a set paradigim of a family which puts huge emphasis on blood bonds. It's not wrong, of course, but in that case a child will feel terrible if someone tells them that they are adopted. Like, the person who gave birth to them, who is supposed to love them unconditionally, didn't want them. Adoption should be viewed as positively as possible, but I understand that receiving the news would still be a nightmare to many children
@ComfyAko I was talking more about the family compulsion thing. You don’t need to get married and have kids to be happy. I’ve never been a bif believer in blood bonds. The family I am most close too are family members by title only. People I refer to as aunts and uncles when in reality they are close friend of my parents. However they have done more as my family than most of my blood one. I’d say adoption is the best thing someone can do
I just assume this game will have nothing to do in it after buying the milking room like the original. Still loved it for a long time as a kid, but I was pretty annoyed with how there was nothing left to do after buying the farm upgrades.
On Gamecube it was the first game ever that made me stay up all night and literally not sleep for like 48 hours straight. The cycle is so addicting in this one.
@ComfyAko At the time I hated it because it forced the social aspects of the game series which I had ignored onto the player (I got the "bad end" 4 times before playing the way the game intended) but it did open up the game for players that normally ignore that aspect of the series. I like the social aspects now that they make more sense to me, but if it wasn't for this game I might not have changed my playstyle. I do wish they had given you a no marriage option.
If they let us turn off ageing then I'm in. I still don't know why The Sims hasn't come to the Switch, it seems perfect. I'd be happy with Urbz or another Sim spinoff tbh
