Re: SEGA Goes Big On Nostalgia For "Project Sonic '22"

87th

It's a homage to the "Project Sonic" branding that appeared during the Saturn era in Japan. It's speculated that it was reassure Saturn owners that they were working on a big Sonic game for the title (which later became Adventure on the Dreamcast), though the logo appeared on the Japanese discs for Sonic R, Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island and Sonic Jam.

Re: Poll: What's The Worst Legend Of Zelda Game?

87th

People really hate Tri-Force Heroes that much? I really loved A Link Between Worlds, and playing through Tri-Force Heroes with two friends felt like a fun way to explore those of those kinds of dungeons. It's really bad in single-player, and relying on random co-op partners can be a struggle, but I think it can be a lot of fun if you know who you're working with.

I don't think Zelda II is terrible, but it gets my vote. I think it's just a pretty mediocre NES action game, like Castlevania II, and it would be hard to find anyone who cared about it if it wasn't for the Zelda brand.

Re: Poll: Pikmin Is Now 20 Years Old - Which Is Your Favourite Game In The Series?

87th

Wii U 3's definitely my favourite. Some took issue with balancing the GamePad with the Wii Remote and nunchuck, but it made it feel like a much bigger experience for me, and the reliability of the Wii Remote's pointer was much more satisfying to work with. I did enjoy the additions to Deluxe, but I don't think it managed to fully replicate the core experience.

I really like the atmosphere of the original game. It feels the most alien of the series, and Olimar's diary entries at the end of each day really give the game a lot of heart. I think the design of 3 is the most exciting and satisfying to play though. The ability to reliably throw Pikmin at overhead targets really made the design come together for me, and the complexity of your squad's objectives each day was really fun to strategise around.

Re: Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy Gets A Meaty File Size, By Switch Standards

If you view the eShop listing, it seems each game can be downloaded individually, though it seems they have to be purchased as a bundle, so those without large SD cards should be okay, even if it means only having one GTA downloaded at a time.

You'd hope a company as rich as Rockstar with as safe a bet as GTA would be willing to invest in putting all the content on the Switch cartridge, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Re: Poll: What's A Fair Price For The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack?

87th

I think the current subscription is already really cheap. The idea that charging £1.60 a month for all these N64, Mega Drive, and possibly, Game Boy games would be unreasonable seems like an opinion born solely of principle to me. If they sold these in the forms of official retro compilations, I'd likely spend far more - and likely - end up playing the games less.

Re: Microids Signs "Historic" Agreement With Taito To Produce Two New Games

87th

@ecco6t9 I'm not sure the exact arrangement, but it seems Taito's relationship with Square Enix changed a few years ago when they started publishing games again. Square Enix mainly seems involved in Taito's toys and UFO catcher-style arcade machines these days, and I don't think they have a lot to do with their new console games.

Re: GPD Has Plans For Its Own Switch-Style Handheld Device Powered By Android

87th

I'd imagine that the Steam Deck would take out a lot of these gamer-focused mobiles and emulation handhelds. This still has the advantage of better portability and SIM support, but it just seems like a much more limited and less ergonomic device. Not the kind of thing that I see either hardcore gamers or regular mobile customers going for. Maybe it has some appeal with the younger crowd who are really dedicated to mobile battle royale games?

Re: Talking Point: Every Pre-BOTW 3D Zelda Now Has A Remake, But Which Is Best?

87th

While I'm totally happy playing the original, the little QoL improvements to Ocarina of Time make it much more comfortable to replay. The on-screen maps and touchscreen inventory are just great additions to a 3D Zelda. Majora's Mask 3D used all the same stuff, but its changes to the game elsewhere were much more controversial.

I like Wind Waker HD, but I don't think the soft lighting and bloom improve the look of the game. I think I'd rather play the Gamecube version if I was going to come back to it again, even if it does lack some modern conveniences.

Re: Soapbox: Zelda: Skyward Sword Is Good, Actually

87th

I like the game, and the high points are some of my favourite in the series, but this article doesn't touch upon my biggest issue with it - the pacing and structure. The disconnected set of explorable areas really hurt the sense of adventure, and the developers felt they needed to exploit each environment as much as they could to lengthen out the game. Between the dowsing, underwater fetch quest, and an atrocious late-game stealth section, not a lot of it was much fun or added anything valuable to the experience.

It's a massive contrast from all the things that the game did right. The intricacy of the combat is thrilling when you've learned how to work with it, and some of the dungeons are among the most masterfully and imaginatively realised in the series. Not always. The pirate ship section was so visually bland and repetitively designed, it reminded me of PS1 and N64 dreck like Duke Nukem: Time to Kill and South Park.

I think people who stick with the game will find a lot to love in it, but I totally understand that not everyone has that kind of patience when a game feels like it's aggressively wasting their time.

Re: Feature: Ten Arcade Games We'd Love To See On Switch

87th

I've not really seen much use for the PS4 and PS5's touchpad before, but Astro's Playroom has convinced me it works really well as a substitute for a trackball. I rarely buy arcade games on anything other than the Switch, but if SegaSonic's going to get a home version, I'd actually prefer to play it on PS5.

Re: Poll: Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit Is Out Today On Switch, Are You Getting It?

87th

Was on the fence about it, but I had the money and felt myself heading towards GAME to buy one, almost entirely on instinct. It's a nice little thing, and getting a toy's eye view of your home is really fun, but with all the technical issues, I don't think it has a lot of appeal for serious gamers. My connection's been spotty when both my Switch and the kart are near my other consoles, and there's almost always some AR glitching, but the novelty of the device is enough for me to enjoy it.

Re: Soapbox: 25 Years On, I Still Can't Get Into Yoshi's Island

87th

Yeah, I think age has a lot to do with it. I was really impressed when I first tried it, when I was about 12, but I didn't have much time to play it then. If I had, I think I'd still love it. Tried it again years later, and it does nothing for me. Really struggled to push through Woolly World too. Had a similar experience with the Wario Land games. It's Mario or nothing for me these days, it seems.

Re: Poll: No, Really, What Was Nintendo's Worst Year?

87th

2015 gave us Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Majora's Mask 3D and Fire Emblem Fates, Yoshi's Woolly World as well as the underrated Tri-Force Heroes and Code Name: STEAM. Anyone calling it Nintendo's worst year is just pinning their frustration on a few underwhelming sequels they likely haven't played for themselves.

Re: Poll: No, Really, What Was Nintendo's Worst Year?

87th

I think a lot of people don't realise how good they have it, these days. Even if years like 2015 produced a lot of disappointing sequels, some of the years in the 80s and late 2000s only produced one or two notable Nintendo games. I'll take Star Fox Zero over Star Fox Command any day.

Re: Fans And Analysts Ponder The Eternal Question: Can Nintendo Survive Without Shigeru Miyamoto?

87th

I love Miyamoto, but I think Nintendo have done a great job in allocating different franchises to directors and producers who work well with them. You only have to look at Zelda to see how richly one of Miyamoto's games can thrive without his direct guidance. And the company have recently done great work forming young teams, completely removed from the NES and SNES-era superstars. I think they're all very conscious of the desire to live up to the legacy of the great developers associated with Nintendo, especially after Iwata's passing, and I don't think it undermines Miyamoto's talent or unique vision to say I think they'll be able to do it. I think it's directly because of Miyamoto's influence that they will.

Re: Talking Point: Would You Like Miiverse To Return On Switch?

87th

I really loved Miiverse, but I don't think it would be as good a fit for the Switch. The GamePad was a great device to draw on, and even with a stylus, the Switch isn't. Miiverse was also launched when social media was a little different. You couldn't embed a game screenshot in a tweet back then. I don't think there would be much interest in a closed console-only platform today. I do miss privately sharing doodles with friends though. Maybe Swapnote/Nintendo Letter Box would be a better fit for the Switch.

Re: Poll: Vote For The Best Resident Evil Games

87th

I think the Gamecube Remake and Deadly Silence should be listed as separate games. They're purposefully different, and appeal in very different ways from each other. They'd both get votes from me, anyway.
