Headcannon, known for its work on Sonic Mania alongside the mobile versions of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, has confirmed its involvement with the upcoming Sonic Origins.
The compilation, due for release on June 23rd, will include the classic mainline games with various added bits and bobs, including a widescreen 'Anniversary Mode'. Headcannon has confirmed via Twitter that it has worked with SEGA to re-create Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles for the collection, thus completing the "remastering" of the mainline titles.
This will no doubt be good news for fans of the franchise, as Headcannon's involvement with the series has largely been met with positive reception. In our review for Sonic Mania, we called the game a "true return to form for the mascot", awarding it a 9/10.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 remains one of the most celebrated entries to the long-running series, so to see it being given the "remastered" treatment from Headcannon is a lovely surprise, to say the least.
Let us know what you make of Sonic Origins and Headcannon's involvement with the game, and whether you plan on picking up the compilation on June 23rd.

I guess this is good news
I wonder it Sonic 3 will use the PC music or if they've been able to use the Michael Jackson tracks
So it looks like the remastered genesis and CD line which has started back in the 360 days will finally be complete.
Thank you, Headcannon and Sega.
I'm happy to see it, Stealth had a rough time getting his Vertebreaker Kickstarter off the ground.
The dude's talented and his game engine could be used for so many wonderful projects.
I see this as good news. Especially since the trailer showed the version of Hidden Palace Zone from the mobile version of Sonic 2. I think it's in good hands given Head Cannon worked with Christian Whitehead on Sonic Mania.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Makes me wonder if both would be used as options, given the 2012 release of Sonic CD has both US and Japan soundtracks.
@Clyde_Radcliffe I assume that's what the bonus Mega Drive/Genesis music DLC is, and the base game will use the old PC tracks.
Much better hands than sega itself so now I'm interested
@87th Apparently that just adds some extra music to the sound test like Sonic Spinball and Sonic 3D Blast etc
Whitehead's not involved? Which is fine, I remember when Headcannon released a demo of their engine on Wii (then called EngineO2, or something) I had never seen a fan engine so accurate to the Genesis games, so Sonic 3's in good hands either way.
This is beyond great news. I can't wait to see what they've done with 3+K. No more lazy ports with bad emulation from Sega; this is truly going to be the definitive version of these games.
Well that gives me hope that we might see the Drop Dash return, but considering SEGA's not advertising it, there's not much hope... Just a fool's hope. Either way, this news is certainly welcome, especially after the announcement of DLC shenanigans courtesy of SEGA.
This lines up with the rumors that there was a falling out with Whitehead over pay. At least we know the remaster is in good hands.
This is great news! It gives me more hope the added levels through the museum mode will be awesome too. Looking forward to it!
I never really got the love for Sonic 3. Visually it's such a mess, with the backgrounds looking scrappy, dithered, and blocky. Compared to the beautiful Sonic 2, it just doesn't compare.
Then there's the music. Masato Nakamura defined the 16-bit Sonic sound, and whilst Sonic 3's music isn't awful, it's certainly a big, big step backwards.
At least it's better than Knuckle's Chaotix I guess.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Huh. Bizarre
Now we all could just wait in confident. Since Headcannon is handling the collection, all Sega need now is to focus on Sonic Frontiers.
This is just my 'wishful thinking' side talking but the fact that Headcannon have some involvement in this collection gives me a tiny bit of hope that Mania 2 might happen some day.
Hurray!
Ok, I'm in.
Hmm this is good news. I suppose then these versions of the games are better than the ones I have on Steam which changes everything. One thing I would really like though and I mentioned it on another Article, but I would really like an option to switch between the European music and the American music. I grew up with the slower European music so naturally I prefer that.
Nice, plus I see the trailer has Sonic 2's Hidden Palace from the mobile version.
And it's become a day one purchase...
Need to release the master system sonics now in a 8 bit collection. It won't happen tho
Sonic 3 and Knuckles is great, it has a great story arc, some standout levels, Robotnik steps up the iconography, the doomsday zone, the music. I will always prefer it to any 2D mario. Fight me.
But which music will be in Sonic 3?!
@Baker1000 hopefully the beta music. Can’t put up with the noise of Carnival Night Zone!
I can hear Johnny, Nick, Cooper, Alex and any other Sonic tuber rejoicing at that news.
And that bought for me.
@KayFiOS Drop Dash was added to the Sega Ages version of Sonic 1 & 2. I would say the chances are really high for this to be added. Would they add it as an unlockable? Will it be behind a hidden menu? (This was done on the mobile versions.) Will be there at the start?
@KayFiOS I too am really really hoping for the drop dash to be added to all the games
@NinChocolate I found out that it might be in the game. There's a shot in the trailer with Sonic jumping in Marble Garden Zone and right before he lands, you can see the Drop Dash wind up animation, and it's easier to see if you slow down the footage. Of course, the trailer doesn't show him landing and it cuts to the next shot before he takes off.
@KayFiOS Wow, great spotting!
Sonic CD is my most played Sega CD game.
Sonic CD and Eternal Champions 2: Challenge from the Dark Side.
100´s hours of gameplay here.
Maybe I´ll pick because the new Sega CD version. For me it is the best Sonic game ever made.
