The big rumour doing the rounds this week is about Nintendo potentially bringing Game Boy and Game Boy Color games to the Switch Online service very soon. Following on from a podcast about this, we confirmed with our own sources Nintendo's most famous handheld was making a return and this was yesterday corroborated by Eurogamer.
If Game Boy games are just around the corner, what would this particular library actually look like on the Nintendo Switch? The same Nintendo fan who made a "mock-up" of a Game Boy Advance NSO service earlier this year in May has now returned with the Game Boy equivalent. Take it away @TheNCSmaster...
Can you imagine being able to boot up games like Pokémon and Super Mario Land from your Nintendo Switch? As amazing as it sounds, some fans aren't quite as optimistic:
It's also worth noting that even if Nintendo does announce a Game Boy and Game Boy Color service, it might not necessarily look the same as the NES and SNES apps for Switch Online.
What do you think of these mock-ups? What games from the GB and GBC era would you like to see return? Tell us below.

I really hope the rumors are true, but I'm not holding my breath for Tetris. Nintendo couldn't even mention the name in the Panel de Pon description for SNES, they just say something like "you may know this game by a different name...."
Not interested with GB, GBC games but for GBA games, I can always get the legit cartridge from online shopping website such as Tokopedia.
I don't think i need NSO to play GameBoy games digitally as I can always play GBA games in cartridge on my NDS lite.
I still don't believe anything about it. It just gets milked more and more and more and more. And in the end it won't happen and people will complain about it.
LIKE ALWAYS!
Nintendo will probably release these at a really slow pace too.
I think you guys and girls at nintendolife know already if the service will release and probably have a couple of reviews already. Haven’t you?
My smartphone from 10 years ago can emulate more Nintendo systems than the Switch is right now. Hard to muster excitement for another round of drip feed releases
Pokemon would be a surprise, if they enable linking, it would most certainly be sold separately at a premium price and whatever extra bells & whistles. Like FE1.
But who knows? Maybe they might just consider having the base game is enough.
Almost sexual isn't it Smithers?
I can already play GB/GBC games on my DS "via other means", but I would cough up the goods for new physical releases for the Switch. I've already bought Collection of Mana, Shantae, Castlevania Collection, and The Lion King/Aladdin due to my irrational love of Game Boy games.
@sleepinglion
Your smartphone from 10 years ago doesn't have buttons, or a 6" screen, or a HDMI output that allows you to connect it to your TV. Also your smartphone technically doesn't have any legitimate means to obtain ROMs for NES/SNES/GB releases......
Honestly I don't understand the whine about the classic games services on NSO. I mean I pay $55AU/year for a family account which is shared between four people including myself. I use those game vouchers for major releases which goes a fair way to covering the cost. But even without that it's what, $4.50/mo? It's not a lot
@sleepinglion Maybe the Switch isn't made for emulators. But for new games? And maybe these emulators that we have now just exist because Nintendo wants you to buy Switch online?
Just maybe?
I wish they would just put everything within a single NSO app. NES, SNES, Splatnet, save cloud, Tetris 99.... everything! Instead we've got seperate apps for everything, there's even apps that can only be accessed by opening another app. It's a ridiculous way to go about it.
That new icon that was added to the bottom row should be the place to go for everything NSO. Instead it's just there being mostly pointless. The only reason I ever open it is to get rid of that damn notifications dot that seems to appear daily, to inform me that nothing's changed.
I don't believe in rumors, but if it did happen I'd hope they'd add Super Gameboy 2 borders to make it a little bit better looking on the TV. And I doubt we'll see any Mega Man, Castlevania, Tetris, Pokemon or Final Fantasy because of all the collections 3rd parties release, Tetris probably has copyright issues, and with Pokemon it's such a big game they probably don't want it overshadowing the newest entry.
@OorWullie there is an app for savecloud? Why should Tetris 99 be in an app with nes and snes online? You can play Tetris 99 without a subscription.
If we get GB/GBC I think we don’t get the games shown in the picture. They are too good to get them at the start.
If it even is true, it most likely won't have anything we actually want anyway. Why release them when you can "remake" them and then plop a 60 dollar price tag on it?
Pokemon Red & Blue please !!!!!!
@Don
To be more accurate, Nintendo will have a good Day 1 lineup for GB/GBC games on NSO, after which the new additions will slow to a crawl.
@TKundNobody you can only play Tetris 99 without a subscription if you buy the offline modes
People talking about there not being may games on NSO. You realise at the NES app launched with 20 games which included Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3, Zelda, Excite Bike, Dr Mario. And the SNES app launched a year later again with 20 titles including Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Yoshi's Island, Star Fox, StuntRace FX, FZero, Super Mario Kart....
Would I expect Pokemon on this thing? Not really. But I wouldn't be at all suprised if we get games like Metroid, Super Mario Land, Kirby, Zelda, Wario on Day 1.
The weirdest thing about GB/GBC games being added is that the NES and SNES apps have Online in their name and they marketed them as a way to play multiplayer games over the internet. About half of the games have some kind of multiplayer component.
How many great multiplayer games are there for Game Boy? Games that aren't ports of NES and SNES games. Pokémon is obviously the first thing that comes to mind when you think about GB in general but I somehow still have doubts they'd add any main series games. I'd love to be wrong.
I don't know how many actually use the online component of these apps but it's the direction Nintendo has taken with its old catalog so I think they're going to keep it that way. N64 would've made more sense in that regard.
@CodyMKW I know. so why should anybody who bought it for offline should have a nso app with NES/SNES which they can't use to open Tetris?
there are only 7 games I want to play on that list. add more GBA games
@sanderev My point is that old tech could run more consoles and Nintendo is purposefully drip feeding both emulated consoles and the games on them. The Virtual Console service from the Wii likely represents the most effort Nintendo will put into emulation, whereas the rest of the time they'll just sue rom sites and shake their fists at people who resort to emulation over a $200 Chrono Trigger SNES cart
@Anti-Matter Yeah but not everyone has access or had the opportunity to buy a gameboy back in the day, or wants to go through the hassle of throwing hundreds of dolars on rare cartridges.
Many people like me haven't bought a Nintendo console in ages and the Switch (at least for me) is my first real console (Wii was too casual and didn't have many of the big games in its lifetime).
I would enjoy playing those few worthy GB/GBC games on Switch, and hopefully GBA would follow suit sometime later
Nothing against the GameBoy and would fight for it's inclusion once all the other systems were added, but at this point not so sure we need this console on the online service, surely the Gameboy advance would be a better fit, or even the N64 or GameCube, as Nintendo seem to be going forward with their system choices.
@Flashlink99
The reason i will not playing Gameboy games from NSO because I only interested by a few specific GBA titles (niche games, not the popular games) that mostly will never be included in NSO.
The only way to play those specific GBA games by purchasing the cartridge from my local online shopping website Tokopedia, find the games with cheaper prices and play the games on my NDS Lite.
@sleepinglion,
A lot will depend on how popular the virtual console was on the Wii, and did it's sales continue on the Wii U or was it in fact all that big of a seller in the first place, my guess is it's sales had got to a point where Nintendo decided to retire it then offer their retro games in different ways. And at the time I remember many on here and other gaming sites complaining about the service, price of games etc.
As for Nintendo clamping down on emulation and ROM sites it's simply a question of copyright and legality, and all the arguments and justification in the world can't excuse this, for example I could try the cost rationale to many arguments, for example if I feel an I Pad is too expensive, could I justify stealing one.
Retro items in any field can be expensive, this is usually down to the fact they are not produced anymore and are limited, this is before the auction sites and graders do their bit to inflate certain prices etc, you can't blame Nintendo for not making things available forever.
@Anti-Matter Your point is valid and it's great you have easy access to great GBA games this way. I am sad that the retro scene barely exists in my country (Romania). Not only that, a good friend of mine got a GBA in 2004 and still works to this day, but even back then he couldn't get a hold of the first party games, only crappy movie-licensed games and such
I hope they put some cool third party games in like ninja gaiden shadow or ninja spirit
@Anti-Matter I think next to some big hits there are more niche games than games most people wanted. so maybe you get lucky
The way things have been handled so far, I’m not even looking forward to this. It’s gonna be a slow drip and a bunch stupid games no one wants. As a long time nintendo fan, I’ve lost trust.
Forget the games, that icon doesn't look right. The game boy needs to face forward to match the NES and SNES controllers.
Why not Gameboy Advance? Why not N64? And where the hell are Gamecube games??
4K SWITCH. Didnt happen. But another came...
@Zach realistically I think the chances of Tetris appearing on a Game Boy NSO service are between zero and minus figures. Would be a shame that a service representing the Game Boy would lack the system’s most iconic game, but that’s rights issues related nightmares for you.
If only we’d get that ECW game…..
All I see is people setting themselves up to be disappointed and getting angry at Nintendo for not delivering on rumours. The cycle continues
@NinChocolate Given how much Koei Tecmo have got behind the NES app, I think there's a good chance of more Ninja Gaiden
GB games will be a nice addition to NSO. I'm looking forward to the Mario Land games especially. But somehow I feel that Nintendo would be cheapening the deal by omitting GBA games. That may sound entitled, but it just seems logical to me to reintroduce all Gameboy versions at the same time.
Let’s be honest, the way Nintendo release games on this service we’ll probably be lucky to get Mario Land 2 this year. It will probably launch with Mario Land 1, Alleyway, Tennis and Qix.
I don't think we will get GB Zelda, because they still want to sell the Links Awakening Remake.
@Late
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_multiplayer_Game_Boy_games
Pokemon will not be included Game Freak would never allow their games to be on the Switch Online they would rather sell them all separately for $20 on the E-Shop
@dojmin because Nintendo are stingy
These articles surely have to be a spoof. These mock-ups are dreadful, the shade of red isn’t even right and the size of the icon isn’t correct.
@skywake I mean, I Googled the same list myself before posting but... thanks? Bunch of the games are ports, in which case they're better off releasing the console versions. I was also asking which ones are great and the Wikipedia article doesn't provide an answer to that question.
I'm just curious since I didn't own a Game Boy as a kid (although I wanted one) and I've never heard of anyone saying how good GB was for multiplayer games.
@Late i stilll own mine the only multiplayer we did was poke omen trad/fight and Pokemon TCG. All via cable. But I can't image to do it online or With other games.
I love Game Boy but I can’t see myself booting this up more than once for the novelty of playing some of these on the TV. Tbh I’ve got the original carts for most big games from back in the day, plus a Game Boy player on GameCube, PLUS. I bought a lot in 3DS (save states yay!).
It’s going to be great for youngsters to experience these games themselves without tracking down expensive carts, but not really much reason to keep my subscription to the online. With Wii Virtual Console, Wii U eshop ,NES and SNES minis I got a lot of that out of my system years ago.
Now add GBA and GameCube (Thousand Year Door anyone?) and I’d stick around…
Sad truth is we’ll get mostly garbage
Thank you Rebecca, now you made me think Totally Angelica would come to NSO... probably not, since that's a licensed game, but still. That thought, I really don't like...
@Gamecuber I hope I can at least play Metroid II. I didn't play the whole series when they were released. unfortunately no GBA. I would love to play Metroid II and Fusion before Dread arrives.
N64, GBA, GCN. Won't care until I start seeing these.
@Wavey84 nonsense
I'd be a day one buyer for a GBA mini classic handheld, but no, not interested in NSO. Much better ways to play these games.
Somebody photoshopped a fantastical wishlist of Gameboy games and their box art? Now that’s newsworthy.
Well yes, it's a mock-up that looks exactly like the current ones, where's the genius in this? or what are we meant to be judging? This is 99% likely how it will look. Well done.
Now why would you mock it up with the GameBoy at an angle when all the controllers are front-on? You’d also make the logo white to match too.
Honestly it’s a 10 min photoshop job to put these together.
@sleepinglion Ahhh I had a Sony Xperia Play which was fantastic for emulation because of the retractable gamepad. Literally was a Pokémon machine
Some random guy puts a bunch of quickly slapped together game boy thumbnails over the NSO interface.
Nintendo life - "Give that man another story!"
@Ogbert Exactly. I'm shocked this guy was featured not once, but twice on these low-effort, copy paste jobs. You see people make this stuff all the time on Reddit.
The "Gameboy" icon isn't even consistent with the real NSO icons, showing the Gameboy at a 2/3rds angle instead of a front-facing one like the NES/SNES icons. The red used in the bg is totally different. the font is different and incorrectly sized and spaced. Looks like it was made in 3 minutes by memory. Sloppy as hell.
Is it bad that I think the lack of GBA support actually makes the rumor more believable?
I'm not convinced but it does fit with their modern snail pace release of legacy content.
I'd be very surprised if it had Pokemon. Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee is gen 1 on Switch. I'm sure they'd rather make big boy money on that than sell some online subscriptions.
Gimmie N64 and Gamecube then we will talk XD
@sleepinglion Exactly perfect comment
@Wavey84 I recently upgraded to a widescreen 28 inch crt tv. I’m thinking of running the mini consoles into it with an HDMI to SCART converter I’ve got. Should look pretty authentic!
If Pokémon doesn’t come to NSO can we at least get original Gen 1-3 as a separate download on eShop.
The prob with GB and GBA games is that a lot of them were ports from NES/SNES. It doesn't make sense to have inferior "duplicate" entries in NSO so I wonder what the list will look like when a lot of great games were licensed.
I also hope the GBC versions of games are prioritized over the GB variants
Why do these mock-ups always include games guaranteed NOT to come to the service?
Donkey Kong ‘94 will be the star!
@chipia I think enough time has passed with the Link’s Awakening remake that they probably will include it. Anyone who doesn’t have it yet is waiting for it to be a Selects discount title or just recently got their Switch.
It has about 5.5 million copies sold at this time. Very respectable, but not as high as many other Switch titles (including Wii U ports). Without a discount, they aren’t going to keep selling a lot of new copies of this title.
Plus, they never took down the 3DS eShop option.
@TKundNobody Yeah, we are probably getting a little too close to the Dread release date. Releasing Fusion and Zero Mission in mid August would have been a great marketing move.
@Anti-Matter You can say the same for any other console.
Hoping for GBA on the service released at the same time as GB games is not very probable. Is like hoping the NES games whwre released at the same time as SNES ones
Give it to meee. I really just want GBA games above the others though…
@Zequio
"Hoping for GBA on the service released at the same time as GB games is not very probable."
I wasn't hoping GBA games from NSO.
I have a few title of GBA games I want to get physically from my local website Tokopedia to be played on my NDS Lite so I don't need NSO to play GBA games.
@Tandy255 you are right. every company would have done this. throw in 2 old games for "free" to get more sales on the new title.
It would be funny if GB/GBC wasn't coming to NSO and instead a "Gameboy Classic" system dropped to everyone's surprise for this holiday season. I don't put anything past Nintendo.
@MeloMan even worse: GB Game son NSO and a GBA Classic, which can only be ordered by NSO subs. Don't underestimate Nintendo XD
I hope they add the Super Gameboy capability to it. I can see Mario, Kirby, and Donkey Kong on the service but I don’t think they will add Pokémon main games. They are too busy remastering them and may fear it will cut into sales. Also would they add a way to transfer Pokémon from it? If so that would be cool to send them to Pokémon Home. But feeling doubtful.
All I know is I need at least 4 different ways to play Tetris on Switch.
That mockup by Rebecca Stone is clearly fake.
Because they would never pay the license to ECW again, it was bought by WWE and games based on a license never come back unless the copyright owner to the game also owns the license.
I'd like to see some unexpected offerings, like Zapper or Super Scope 6 games and maybe the sell a Labo gun holder for the JoyCons.
@victordamazio Continuing, one of the biggest problems people ignore, not only in this service, but across the whole videogame industry, is expired licenses.
If you paid to use a license for a movie, show, cartoon, comic, sports league or celebrity to adapt into a videogame, once the license expired, you should still be allowed to sell the game just fine, you just can't use the license to make another game, that way, many classics based on a license like many classic Mickey, TMNT and Batman games, could come back to digital services.
And this isn't really problem with laws, because all that they had to do, is pay for a more expensive license like Hollywood movies have, Sony doesn't have the rights to Ghost Rider anymore, they can't make more Ghost Rider movies, but they can still sell and distribute the Nicolas Cage movies.
The drip feed strategy for new releases on NSO is a problem, still looking forward to this however.
@Silly_G There's no such thing as a "irrational love for Game Boy games". It's simply natural.
Why is it that these fan mockups so often can't even get the basics right? The formatting of that is totally wrong.
The background red is a different shade. The GB itself would be straight on, not angled. Look at how bad the blue of the GB logo is bleeding into the red...hideous.
I don't expect everyone to be a photoshop wiz, but if you're gonna do this kind of thing, at least follow the same design ethos of the UI.
What controller will be released along with this? I’d go for a full size DMG with Bluetooth
@victordamazio It is a joke about how slow the games come out and usually how obscure they are.
I would love a Game Boy section just for the Mario Land games, anything else added beyond that would be a bonus.
@Wavey84 I’ve been playing a few on the old Wii Virtual Console recently (Super Mario Bros.3, Paper Mario, Streets of Rage 2) on a crt through RGB SCART and it looks great, even set to widescreen. My son has started Paper Mario on Wii U (save states make it a bit easier for him) and the picture is so dark next to the Wii version!
People will hype this up and then get mad when Nintendo confirm it isn't true.
Those games are too top tier. We need the jellyboy equivalents then it would be more realistic.
@Tandy255 I know, the NES and SNES games are really lackluster.
However, the other problem is that they don't have games based on a license, like TMNT and Batman, because the rights expired, it would be so good if Nintendo helped with that, but the problem is not with Nintendo, it's the whole videogame industry.
@Zach The only reason Nintendo released it as Panel de Pon is because the only part of the game that didn't belong to them was the English name. Of course they'll release the version that they didn't have to pay anyone else for. They have no issue with licensing with the Tetris Company. They already have Tetris 99, Puyo Puyo Tetris 1&2, and Tetris Effect is coming in October.
@sleepinglion
You’re right, the Virtual Console on Wii was great, though even then there were plenty of complaints about the slow pace of releases and the prices. What we may have to accept is that, despite the love for such a service on here, it didn’t make enough money to be worth that effort.
@electrolite77 I loved how ambitious it was. NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, TG16, Arcade... I seem to remember there were even more emulated consoles at the time, which the Wii was more than capable of handling
I actually like that NSO has been releasing a bunch of no name games...I love finding SNES and NES stuff that I've never heard of, its why I have such a big collection!
These mock-ups are dreaming if they think Pokemon, Final Fantasy or Mega Man will find their way onto the service in any capacity. Nintendo is more than willing to join in on the piecemeal retro rerelease, just like they did with Crystal/Gold/Silver on the 3DS eShop.
As a wrestling fan I'd mark tf out if the ECW GBC showed up on the Switch.
I hope they add Gameboy advance.
Gotta love that tweet ready to complain about something that they wouldn't complain about at all, if Nintendo simply continued to not add any other systems to the online service. Such people really annoy me lol.
Nintendo needs to add Earthbound, Earthbound Beginnings, Startropics 2, Lolo 2, and Lolo 3 to finish the NES and SNES online for me. ( There is other third party games I want but they aren't going to happen.)(I know Lolo is third party but they already have the first one.)
Not really interested gameboy games I hoped nintendo would do ones like n64 because it has huge number of games like banjo kazooie that could be on there. Or even have gamecube games.
Still waiting until day they add super mario rpg to the switch.
Only Poseurs put up Pokémon while forgetting to represent Solar Striker, Penguin Wars, Boxxle and Alleyway.
Are you insinuating that you don’t still bring your 3ds everywhere you go? Shame.
Nope.
I'm graphic designer (Amazon) and I say that this Gameboy thumb goes completely against the visual identity proposed by nintendo. The typography should be white, not blue...other than that it is irritating when reading. The size of the "nintendo switch online" is also BIGGER than those of Nes and Snes... The controls of nes and snes are fully frontal and this Gameboy is in a different perspective. it seems silly, but if you analyze it, you will agree with me...
It seems people are excited for this prospect, so I guess I'll be too...
The only thing that comes into my mind is the fact that Game Boy games are usually shorter and easier to complete than their home console counterparts. That's the part where zero tolerance will be permitted when it comes to how many games will arrive on the service. I mean at least add the Harvest Moon and Pokémon games there!
