The latest LEGO Ideas review has arrived, where talented fans can submit their own designs with the potential for their ideas to be transformed into real LEGO sets, and a number of gaming-inspired ideas made it to the final reckoning. Sadly, this time, none have them managed to get the final approval they needed.
Designs based on The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Animal Crossing and Among Us all managed to earn enough fan votes to qualify for the review, but ultimately came up short. Of course, it's always worth remembering that licensing issues for projects based on already existing IP would cause difficulities, and with Nintendo already working with LEGO on its own Mario products, the company might want to steer clear of fan-made designs in favour of its own.
Here are the designs that could have been:
As for the designs that did make it through? Those honours go to Hsinwei Chi for his Jazz Quartet, and Jaijai Lewis for his effort inspired by The Office.
Congratulations to the winning designs, and as for the Nintendo crowd – there's always next time!

Just pretend the Jazz Quartet is the band from Super Mario Odyssey and it all works out.
That Jazz Quartet set is really impressive though.
To be fair, that jazz quartet is a step above the others in terms of creativity. And then The Office clearly has cheaper rights.
Jazz Quartet is pretty darn nice, but that Office one… meh
Inspiring me to make my own Metroid set though!
On one hand I'm disappointed, but on the other those winners still deserve it. As simple as it is, that Office set would tempt me...
A shame, I would have actually bought a lego Ridley to place on my desk at work...
That jazz quartet is fantastic though!
Also, they might actually be in discussion with Nintendo about officially designed products for Zelda and such already which might be why they didn't pick the fan ones?
That is a shame.
I'm guessing the Office is the inferior American version, no thanks it could be anyone
That sucks, but that office set is tempting...
Does that mean we are getting an office lego set? If so I’m in. I have to say I like Metroid but the design of the jazz is pretty cool.
Is it just me, or does Ganondorf have a Cheshire Cat grin?
Also, it'd be awesome to have a LEGO Ridley.
I'd really been hoping for that Metroid set! Oh well it was not to be.
That Zelda set is a bit of a snore. The Office set even more so. I'm sure an Animal Crossing set would sell like gangbusters however.
Office only one cause they can regurgitate City parts.
I enjoyed The Office, but man is it ever overrated
Welp, there goes that. Thought it would be cool to see an official LEGO Samus, would've probably made a lot of money too along with the LoZ and the Animal Crossing sets
Considering how well the Mario Lego is selling I'm surprised at this. It might be they already have other official Nintendo stuff in the works.
This isn't surprising. Franchise sets have a plan they aren't used for the ideas. I'm sure there are more Nintendo Legos in the works given how successful they've been, But those plans are coming from Lego, Not user submissions.
Another TV show set...yay....
Noooo! I really wanted that Metroid set and the Zelda one. But, at least the winner wasn't another NASA set.
I hate to say I told you... ah, who am I kidding, I LOVE saying I told you so. So, yeah, I told you so. It doesn't matter how many times people submit Nintendo-themed sets to Lego Ideas, they WILL NOT be picked. Nintendo Lego sets will be designed by TLG's own people or not at all. That's how it works.
Wow, that jazz quartet is super cool. Really impressed by it.
it's always worth remembering that licensing issues for projects based on already existing IP would cause difficulties
This is the legal crush that Nintendo did to LEGO. I think someone did their creativity and Nintendo Lawyer did their duties to kill any votes for it. I think later on we will find someone cheated those number to prevent AC, Zelda Castle, Samus Sets from coming to production. Doesn't anyone think that is odd 3 best selling games for some odd reason comes up short during Nintendo games best selling. I do think someone called LEGO and said downgrade those numbers or ELSE.
To be honest, I think given Lego's working relationship with Lego, the only way I could see any of these franchises being touched is if they were co-designed by Nintendo themselves
Metroid and Animal Crossing both look great. The Zelda one doesn’t really scream Zelda to me outside the Link character. Could be any generic castle.
Think it’d be better to pick a more iconic boss battle or something. I’d actually love a mini scale map of Link to the Past, which I believe some fans have done.
I would have bought the Metroid one instantly. Awesome helmets ans cool ship.
Strange that these contestants while submitted a fantastic build but choose the base on an older game version. I think it would be more logic to base on Zelda/Link of Breath of the Wild instead of an earlier game version, same with Metroid since the last game (not Dread) was released more then a decade ago. Because I think both lego and nintendo would like to capture the younger fans instead of their parents.
@Bunkerneath Honestly I can't get mad at you for thinking that Office UK is better than Office US since we're open to our own opinions (unless you only watched the first season of The Office US, but I'ma get to that). However, I feel like The Office US shouldn't have followed the path of The Office UK, since the UK version was a lot less happy, and couldn't have lasted for longer than two seasons with that format.
The Office US initially started the same way as The Office UK, but they had to change up the show for the second season so it didn't get an early cancellation. So they had to change it up so the boss, Michael Scott, wasn't a complete jerk anymore. It worked, and it lasted for nine seasons.
Of course The Office US isn't perfect, seasons 8 and 9 are awful other than the finale, but I still think that it's a good series.
Then again I had a laugh with The Office UK, so both of them kinda stand on their own as good shows.
Those two have zero relations in terms of visual connection to Nintendo or LEGO icons for younger gamers. They are making a serious mistake and neither of those will sell like they expect.
My inner 10 year old wants Lego to bring back the classic castle themes. You know, Black Falcons, Wolf Pack, Dragon Knights, etc. That stuff was always my favourite.
That jazz quartet looks great. I may have to get that one. Starting to get into lego after finding out they do space related and architecture builds.
How are these build for this presentation? Those are made from actual bricks?
And of the internet will blame Nintendo, instead of LEGO, who are the ones reportedly rejecting these model ideas, right now.
@SwitchForce
Actually the wording in the article really confused me. So I went to the lego website and the designs did get enough votes for the review. The designs just did not make it pass that level. Probably because of legal issues.
I do feel inspired to make my own Animal Crossing, since it seems the easiest.
"And remember that THE OFFICE has cheaper rights"
Netflix: "Pfffffffft!... WAT?!?!?!"
@Saturn589
It's not just legal costs, but the cost of producing moulds for things like the master sword. It's not going to be cost effective if it only gets used for one set.
Good contest regardless. Like, I'm not a big Lego builder but I might have to check out that jazz set.
@SwitchForce lol. Lego is already working with Nintendo. They have plans for future sets, so they dont want to use any fan ideas proposal, no matter how many user votes they had, Lego has the ultimate saying.
@Zequio +1. For all we know, other Nintendo IPs are already in the works.
About time we saw a Ricky Gervais Lego minifig
Just imagine they one, it would have been cool.
Lego sadly rejects....no no it should be Nintendo sadly rejects Lego. No doubt Lego would want to get more Nintendo IPs to be turned into money making bricks.
What market demographic would The Office LEGO set aim for?
okay I accept that the jazz band is insanely good and detailed however the fact that means I can't have a little lego animal crossing house makes me wanna weeeppppppp
