Yooka-Laylee arrived back in April across PC and various systems, but it's had a longer route to Nintendo hardware. The Wii U version somewhat predictably bit the dust, and since then it's been a wait for the title to make its way to the Switch.
Playtonic has given various updates, and its latest includes a new GIF of gameplay and assurances that progress is being made. A transition to an updated version of Unity is cited as causing some hiccups, with the goal still being to clear outstanding issues and get the game submitted to Nintendo.
The Playtonic team has been working tirelessly to bring Yooka-Laylee to Nintendo Switch and we’re very nearly there (we promise!) However, we’ve encountered some final technical hurdles and had been waiting for the arrival of Unity 5.6 in order to fix them. Although this has now been released, it has unfortunately introduced other issues which we are working with Unity to resolve before we can submit to Nintendo and lock in our release timeline.
We understand the frustration that it’s taken so long to get the game in your hands but we hope that you understand that we’re working as fast as we can and want the game to perform as well as it possibly can on Switch. Once these remaining issues are resolved we hope to finally be able to commit to and share a launch date. Thanks as ever for your patience and please bear with us – we are getting there!
Here's hoping that the final steps go smoothly for the Playtonic team.

You'd better step on it, Playtonic. This is all going to be irrelevant when Mario Odyssey releases.
Ah lawd...
ETA: @thesilverbrick You literally posted 1 second before me, which I find... amusing. That is all. xD
"Please understand..."
@Lalivero Haha, I noticed that. I hit submit and both our comments popped up simultaneously.
It's been so long, I honestly forgot about this game. BUT I STILL WANNA PLAY IT!
"Please Understand if this thread will have a lot of comments and debates. "
There's a good and bad side to Indies. Shovel Knight is on one side and Yooka-Laylee is on another.
Although I do appreciate them taking the time and effort to make sure the switch version performs well, it's kinda been tiring waiting for so long. Honestly my hype for this has kinda died out. Mario Odyssey doesn't help things either XD
On the one hand I feel sorry for Playtonic and the other I feel let down.
I think we all wanted this game to be the next Banjo Kazooie and wanted the best for Playtonic, but some of their decisions have really soured things for me at least and they have not been able to catch things back up.
Let it release in 2018, releasing too close to Mario Odyssey will bury it.
They don't want to make the same mistake twice, clearly. The Xbox/PS version received cruel reviews because of technical and camera issues that were fixed later.
Obviously they don't want the game to be buggy, especially considering the glitchy launch versions on PS4/Xbone/PC, and because it's going to be on the hardware of the one videogame company who is notorious for polishing their own games to the nth degree. Releasing a buggy port after such a long time would make them look very bad indeed. Good of them to take their time!
@Grumblevolcano Yeah, since it was not ready for summer as most people expected then I would release it one or more months after Super Mario Odyssey. December would be perfect.
This is a Switch game, not an Xbox or PS4 game. I hope they improve it and I will support them.
"We understand the frustration that it’s taken so long"
Do they understand the frustration and anger of Wii U owners who were promised this game and backed it more than anyone else? I'm one of them, I switched my backing to Switch. I thought the game would be long out by the time I bought a Switch, but at this rate I'll have a Switch before they release it.
@Alex0714 Me too. I didn't realize it wasn't out on the Switch yet.
Meh
@Lalivero He seems to have replaced @Sligeach_eire as new comments section camper.
EDIT: This has a laughter at the end but it doesn't show up, apparently.
@BlueOcean I'm not a camper and that's terrible spelling of my name.
@BlueOcean I'm thinking more like February.
It's been so long just get it right. Make it the definitive review version.
I was so excited for this game when it was announced. Then, slowly over the months, my excitement faded. Now it's virtually gone.
I'd say take all the time you need if Odyssey wouldn't take all the thunder this game ever had on Switch.
@Banjos_Backpack I still hold Rare in high regard and there are still some original staffers there. What Duncan means is that he doesn't want the team to make a new version of the same thing again just with better visuals and sound. However, he doesn't rule out making a new game in an old franchise: "Do something new with it [old IP] from a gameplay paradigm or scenario or something that could actually be genuinely different and innovative".
I am a big Rare fan as well!
Yooka-Laylee is not as great as Banjo-Kazooie, anyway.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Never thought this day would arrive, but I wholeheartedly agree with you!
As someone who backed the Wii U version I feel cheated, especially as it was Nintendo fans that predominantly backed this, there’s no physical Switch version and nothing offered (such as a Steam download) to compensate for the lengthy delay.
It better be the best version when released, with significant improvements made to the heavily criticised casino level.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Playtonic announce a 2018 release date at this point so they don’t have to compete against Mario and become a distant second-best platformer choice.
I think the game will receive cruel reviews regardless. I just don't think it's that good of a game.
I am still looking forward to this. Just because Mario Odyssey is releasing doesn't mean there isn't room for other 3D platformers.
Oof, engine version updates.
I get that it's a necessay evil when you're using a 3rd-party engine and hit an intractable issue, but pushing a significant version update of the core framework on any mostly-complete project is just asking for trouble.
Good luck, Playtonic, and may Banjo have mercy on your souls if this pushes you into a head-to-head launch with Odyssey.
@Grumblevolcano I think that they should not only fix the game but even add a few things that could be added to the other versions as well via update. Do you remember Rayman Legends? All versions got retro levels and extra bosses because of the infamous delayed release.
If they are releasing the Switch version of Yooka-Laylee between December and February they have enough time for making the game better.
It's good to know that backers will still get their game eventually. I just doubt anyone else is interested in this by now. They had a few quiet months where it could have filled a void. Missed their window.
Of course, after they have twitted asking for us to vote on Yooka-Laylee for a competition and 100% of the replies were „where is the Switch version". I would also give an statement about.
The only thing that would make me care for this very late and probably going to be worst port is if there's anything new added to the final version, if not then there's no reason to wait for this any longer. Fix what was wrong with the original early versions and add something exciting for those who had to endure the wait for this very late port.
I want this game. I want to support UK developers. I want to support people that make the sort of games I played as a kid. I am going to buy it...
...but I must admit I'm amazed they've had so many problems getting it on the Switch.
I was really excited for this when it was first announced but the Switch has been having an amazing year (that just keeps getting stronger with Odyssey, Xenoblade 2 and some great indies on the horizon) that I feel like at best I'd be waiting for this to go on sale considering it seems like it'll release in the craziness of everything else.
Have a feeling this wont come out for Switch, at least for a while...... :/
No physical release = no purchase
I will probably buy it on Switch instead of my PC when it comes out. Hopefully, the camera issues are fixed then too.
December would be a nice release date, as people who bought Mario Odyssey may be craving for another 3D platformer at that point. Or maybe that's too soon? There are benefits for pushing it into early 2018, especially as January is typically a very slow month.
Either way, I'm a backer, and I can't wait to finally get it. Not that bothered by the middling reviews, as most reviewers seem to want entirely different things from me when it comes to 3D platformers (as the positive reception to Ratchet and Clank / Crash Bandicoot has shown). Hopefully it's released in a much better technical state than the original versions, which I'm optimistic about after the last few months' worth of patches.
I'm still on board. I'll have plenty to do while I wait.
@Thierry "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad" Miyamoto
Is this a new game? I don't think I've heard of it...
They need to skip 2017 at this point. I didn't get it yet, hoping they also fix the camera for the Switch.
Will it use hd rumble
Why no physical copy for Switch version?
Theyre ruined
Playtonic I love you and all... but it's just taking too long! I will be waiting til the game goes on sale for 10-20 bucks.
I still wonder why they used Unity, if it's known to be difficult to work with.
I'll get it, but they better avoid 2017 because it will be compared to Odyssey, and we all know which game is coming on top of that comparisons.
Proof that Unity, irrespective of its popularity, is garbage.
@thesilverbrick Yeah, I was originally planning to buy this to tide me over between finishing BoTW and the release of Mario Odyssey, but it seems unlikely that it'll even come out before Mario Odyssey at this point and therefore I'll probably never get it (unless maybe there's another big Switch game dry spell after I've played Mario Odyssey to death).
Apparently Unity only introduced any kind of multi-threading on consoles a few updates back.
No wonder they're struggling.
@DanElectrode I feel exactly the same way. Odyssey just looks better and better every time I see it, and if I have to play Yooka-Laylee after Mario, it's going to feel incredibly hollow, if the reviews are any indication. The ship has sailed, unfortunately.
Unity: Gamebryo for the modern age.
@thesilverbrick It's a shame, because it would have fit perfectly into that dry spell and I would up buying a couple things that I regret now and probably would've enjoyed this more than (mainly ARMS... it's not bad, I'm just not a fighting game guy and $60 was a lot for a game that I lost interest in after about an hour).
@Luna_110
People use Unity because it's incredibly easy to develop things with.
It's the porting to non-PC platforms that's the problem. Those are 2 separate issues.
Sucks that the potential fans on the Nintendo Switch are missing out on this gem of a game, but I can say it is worth the wait. (For the most part.)
At least this game is nearing some kind of a finished product. Three other KS projects I pledged for WiiU, back in 2013, are in complete production limbo. Reven ( the dev took 3 years making a different game and now is trickling out updates), Lobodestroyo ( no updates for 1.5 years), and Knite and the Ghost Lights (dev studio shut down so one guy tends to make a mobile version of the game from what I understood).
Luckily shovel knight and shantae both delivered. And Might No 9 well, we all know how that turned out. My WiiU says I've played a total of 11 minutes. Utter garbage.
@Dezzy That's all fine and good if you start your project not intending a console port. If you intend a console port and then choose Unity, that's just kind of an awkward choice.
Though it's not really good on PC either. It just foists the bottleneck on your customer needing better hardware to run your optimized trash and burn like a space heater running wasteful cycles.
@DanElectrode @thesilverbrick This attitude towards games that are a few months old or don't seem to have perfect timing, I don't really understand, it's like listening to the hit of the week only.
You can buy and play a certain game before or after another game that appeals more to you, why is so important the release date then? For the publisher it might be, for the casual buyer too, but why does it matter to real gamers? I mean, aren't people asking for GameCube games on Switch?
@BlueOcean It's not that it's the "hit of the week," it's that based on the middling critical reaction that Yooka-Laylee got, it would've been passable as a hold-over until the AAA titles started coming out, but it kind of missed that window and now there's going to be a steady stream of higher-rated games coming out, and I only have a certain amount of dollars to spend on video games.
It's more just the combination of these factors — if Yooka-Laylee had received better reviews, I'd probably get it anyway. If it had come out at a time when there were less options, I would have gotten it. But now that it's going to come out after Mario Odyssey, the highly-anticipated first-party game in the same genre that is receiving nothing but glowing early press, it makes it harder to justify the purchase of Yooka-Laylee as well.
@Banjos_Backpack Well, I can't wait for Sea of Thieves and on multiplatform websites it is one of the most hyped games.
Yes, there is a place for 3D platformers in the 21st century and I hope that Rare realises. The problem with Nuts and Bolts is that it's a sandbox game and not a platformer. Let's see what they do after Sea of Thieves. Banjo-Kazooie is easily my favourite franchise.
This Craig Duncan guy, I just checked, he is a Digital Sumo man that joined Rare in 2011, not the best man to be the head of Rare! I think he doesn't even get what fans love about Rare and I'm getting angry. LOL I hope somebody else takes his place. But hey, Gregg Mayles, Robin Beanland and others still work in there.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Dude we're do you live? Nintendo Switches are finally starting to pop in store around me in Southern California.
When this game eventually comes out, I hope we can get a physical release.
@Nintendoforlife I would argue Yooka-Laylee is on the good side, even with the delays. At least Playtonic is committed to delivering a polished product (on Switch anyway). Now Meme Run, on the other hand, THAT'S the bad side! Unless you're referring to crowdfunded indies, but still, this can't compare to the Mighty No. 9 fiasco, can it?
@DanElectrode Okay, but you might enjoy it after Super Mario Odyssey, just saying. I know what you mean about money and time and it makes sense but not all Nintendo's games are more worthy of your time (Arms) even though all Nintendo games are going to be reviewed positively on here.
I don't understand why people (not just you) rule out a game that they are interested in just because it's not out six months after or before Zelda or Mario.
@BlueOcean Yeah — I mean, that was my point originally, I would've rather spent the money I spent on Arms on Yooka-Laylee instead, but it wasn't out.
If there's another prolonged dead space between Mario Odyssey and when Nintendo's other platformers (Yoshi and Kirby) start coming out in 2018, I might wind up picking it up anyway.
Delay it to next year and add content otherwise it's gonna flop hard as hell
There are so many games on Switch to keep me busy until then, I can wait! I'm just glad that we'll get a more polished version on day one than other users did.
@DanElectrode Fair enough and thanks. I respect every opinion and I'm the first one not buying every game, but yours and his comments sounded like many others that justify that they're not getting a game because of its release date which is kind of weird because we are gamers.
@Banjos_Backpack I wanted to love Banjo Tooie so much but just couldn't because of the levels being too big. Haven't played Yooka Laylee but heard some levels are like Banjo Kazooie and others like Banjo Tooie.
I agree with you levels should be much more like Banjo Kazooie.
I'm not really hyped after several reviews of this game. Might get it eventually but not overly bothered.
@wazlon @Banjos_Backpack I believe that the size of the worlds in Banjo-Tooie is fine but the problem is that this sequel is too complicated. Banjo-Kazooie is better because you are controlling the duo the whole time with occasional transformations. I love Banjo-Kazooie so much because it's like playing the Rare version of a classic European tale and the characters are excellent: Banjo, Kazooie, Gruntilda... If you have read these tales and played Banjo-Kazooie when you were a kid they become part of your life.
@BlueOcean I think you're misinterpreting what I'm getting at. The market was due for a 3-D open world sandbox platformer. There really hasn't been a noteworthy one since Mario Sunshine. I, and many others, are dying to play a game like that, and Yooka-Laylee could have easily scratch that itch. However, after a series of lukewarm reviews and a muted response, it's clear the game isn't everything it set out to be. Were that the case in a vacuum, like a few months ago, I would have jumped on the game regardless, desperate to play a platformer of that kind. But now that the ultimately and undoubtedly superior Mario Odyssey will likely be on the market by the time Yooka Laylee finally releases on Switch, my 3D playforming itch will have been very satisfyingly scratched, so to speak, and I don't think I will be in the mood to play a clearly inferior game. It would be like trying to eat a dull appetizer after a satisfying meal. It would work the other way around when you are hungry, but once you're full, you have no desire to eat the inferior item. Ultimately, curiosity will cause me to pick up Yooka-Laylee sometime in the future and I'm sure I will find things to like about it, but the enthusiasm I had for months ago is just about completely gone, especially considering that a far better game in the exact same genre is right around the corner.
Is this game actually worth getting?
What do you guys think: Does it miss out on a 2017 release on Switch? Its all pretty pathetic basically, the situation around this game coming to Switch. Step to it, Playtonic!
@thesilverbrick Well, you seem absolutely sure about the perfection of Super Mario Odyssey. I'm not so sure to be honest even though as you can see in my profile picture I'm a Super Mario Sunshine fan. All 3D Mario games since Sunshine have disappointed me even though I liked parts of them and all 2D Mario games since Super Mario World have disappointed me even more.
Will Super Mario Odyssey be better than Yooka-Laylee? I don't know, probably, but they are also quite different games for what I've seen.
I understand that you only want to play Mario now, I don't buy all games either, but perhaps you will enjoy more two 3D platformers than, let's say, only one of them plus Arms or Splatoon or whatever other game that might not be so enjoyable for you or for another person.
What I'm trying to say is that release dates shouldn't make people discard games that they are interested in, I'm not talking about Yooka-Laylee but I mean in general. Probably I misunderstood something, these are just my thoughts.
@Banjos_Backpack Xbox One is worth getting for Rare Replay alone. I hope that Sea of Thieves sells well because at least it looks nice and fun and not a Wii Sports clone.
Yeah, what is that Craig Duncan doing? And why is his Twitter account @Gamerboss? He is just a big ignorant arrogant man. He doesn't have a clue about what Rare is. We as long-time fans have something to say, right?
Robin Beanland is a great guy and I love his music. So is Gregg Mayles. The other remaining people I don't know as much.
The writing in Donkey Kong Country and Banjo-Kazooie is awesome. Cranky, Banjo, Kazooie... Three of the best video games characters ever.
I have a love-hatred relationship with Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolts, same as you. LOL I think it's a lot of fun building vehicles when you have learnt the basics and using them but it's not a platformer and Banjo and Kazooie's dialogues and appearance are toned-down. No Banjo-Kazooie moves either.
If only Cranky was here to bring order...
Unity engine is the main problem look at battle chasers having similar issues. Yes overcooked had no problems but if you look at overcooked graphics isnt too intensive and simpler game comparing the two and yet its running only in 30fps where if in another engine it could have easily gone to 60 fps. Shame that these two games are delayed as there is so many option now compared to four or so months ago. Best for yooka to be released maybe dec or next year add extra polish and fix/new content to entice to buy.
Took them long enough that I no longer care.
@Banjos_Backpack Rare Replay is brilliant! The N64 games look awesome with higher resolution and better frame rate. It has all the important games except Goldeneye 007 and Donkey Kong Country trilogy for copyright reasons.
I'm excited about Kroko Bongo too!
"we’ve encountered some final technical hurdles and had been waiting for the arrival of Unity 5.6 in order to fix them. Although this has now been released, it has unfortunately introduced other issues."
Talk about wasting time.
@Banjos_Backpack I want a true Banjo-Kazooie game too. We have to do something about Craig Duncan @Gamerboss. LOL
Going back to Yooka-Laylee, I don't think that the new technologies are to blame but the developers. I mean, they could have done something like Banjo-Kazooie with modern visuals and different ideas but they focused on bigger worlds and dispersed items. The new characters compared to Banjo and Kazooie... well, I don't want to be cruel here.
For instance, Ocarina of Time looks awesome on 3DS (ancient technology at the moment) with just more colours and detail. They could have done something really pretty with Yooka-Laylee. Some developers need to focus on the core idea and not the scale.
I have lost interest.
@Not_Soos I suppose you could, but it would be a very tough sell. Whether it be the frame rate issues on the other consoles, or multiple delays. There's just something that reeks of incompetence on their part, and they single handedly killed all hype even remotely associated with their game. When you're an Indie you HAVE to be efficient, if I want inefficiency I can go to any other major game company. The problem is the major companies aren't begging for us to fund their games are they.
@Pupito Funny, I just wrote how beautiful Grezzo's Ocarina of Time and also Majora's Mask are. Agreeing with @Banjos_Backpack 's perception of how a game world should be, those are the best Zelda games and I think your idea, Pupito, would be much better than the ridiculously overrated -in my opinion- Breath of the Wild which is a watered-down mix of Assassin's Creed and Monster Hunter with an almost empty world and cheap shrines. I hope in a decade or so people realises that Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are much better.
@BlueOcean Wow, you're the only other person I've seen who wasn't blown away by BOTW or Mario Odyssey. I feel like you really get me.
Anyway, I don't have to care about Mario or Yooka-Laylee because my eye is on A Hat in Time. Might still get Yooka Laylee over Mario, though.
@LArachelDisciple I didn't say anything negative about Super Mario Odyssey, I have no opinion about games I haven't played.
Breath of the Wild, sorry, this is my true opinion, I can send you screenshots proving I have played it more than 100 hours, many more I think, and map screenshots with everything except some Koroks. I bought the game, I've played it to death. I'm a huge Zelda fan.
I'm not the only person though, there are tons of articles, videos and users opinions saying much more negative things about it. Check them out.
Seems to me they really messed up using Unity...if they had used Unreal it probably would have went smoother.
At this point just take your time.... no rush anymore and a polished game is all that matters. Even Q1 or 2 2018 would be totally fine as my backlog will keep me busy until then!
@Pupito I was worried when Nintendo said that Breath of the Wild is the way that the series is going onwards. It has a big dull world with only four dungeons and they are bad, really bad. Plus one hundred-something clone shrines some of them are mini-boss battles, some of them are a chest in a room. The story is poor. The climbing is annoying.
I hope that you are right and the next Zelda game goes back to a better written story and true dungeons. At least, they finally admitted that they didn't make dungeons because they are hard to make. That's true and also sad.
@BlueOcean I meant that yu didn't let Mario steamroll your interest in anything else.
@LArachelDisciple I still don't get you, sorry. I already have Yooka-Laylee and I'm always interested in Mario (and Zelda), even though I consider some Mario (and Zelda) games to be better than others. I can't have an opinion about Super Mario Odyssey before playing it.
If you don't include Virtual Boy and CDi-Philips or whatever the name is I have all Zelda and Mario games (original and/or Virtual Console).
I grant them the effort in trying to make as good a game as possible, but with such a long wait, the game has already become irrelevant even before its release...
That's what happens when you use Unity for console development... Poor choice of tools. It might be an easy to learn/use tool but it's only relatively good for PC. They should've gone with Unreal from the start.
@BlueOcean I can't say I believe that Mario Odyssey will be flawless, but based on what I've seen and the hands-on impressions I've read, I have year to hear of any major flaws. I wish I could say the same about Yooka-Laylee. The game is riddled with issues, and not just from a glitchy technical standpoint. I haven't simply discarded Yooka-Laylee because of the existence of Mario Odyssey (I do plan on playing it someday), but the fact that it's releasing after a game that is poised to be far better has put it on the back burner for me. I'll get around to it someday, and it feels odd to say that, since I was tremendously excited for it earlier this year. Had it released sooner I'd have eagerly bought and played it. Release dates may not change a game's actual quality and merits, but they do play a factor in one's overall perception and enjoyment of a game, especially in relation to other, more compelling software. Case in point, if Ocarina of Time released for the first time today identically to how it appeared in 1998, it wouldn't be venerated to the same degree.
@BlueOcean Didn't you just say that it was weird for people to stop being interested in Yooka-Laylee because its release date is close to Mario's now? I wasn't trying to assume what you thought about Odyssey or question you interest in the series.
@LArachelDisciple Well, I said that it is weird for Yooka-Laylee or any other game if you are interested in it. Why would you rule it out if some other game you are more interested in is out at the same time? You can have them both and play them both. Why can't one of the two just wait? That's my point. Some of my favourite games ever were released almost at the same time. Besides, Team17/Playtonic is not crazy enough to release Yooka-Laylee near Super Mario Odyssey's release date.
What happened to these developers?
Banjo-Kazooie worked flawflessly and perfect from launchday onwards!
It's not the release date that factors in, it's that we now know that it's not as great as Banjo-Kazooie. Plenty people have played it on PC, PS4, Xbox. It had some issues. It surely can not be the 10/10 game anymore we hoped to get.
But with expectations in check, and not caring about the release date, I just want to get a polished Switch version on retail, and if it's 29,99€ I'd pre-order right now.
I have refrained from watching anything about the final game, because I don't wanna be spoiled. I just wanna explore and jump and run through beautiful worlds and do adventures and puzzles for fun characters with weird problems to collect more and more golden rotating things that unlock more beautiful levels. On my way I also expect bits of the old nostalgi-magic and new ingeniousity, basically the same reasons I want Mario Odyssey. Man, I can't wait to play both games.
@thesilverbrick spoke for all of us.
Not everyone has stopped caring yet, Playtonic. Better release the game before they do.
@thesilverbrick I know what you mean but I don't really agree with your perspective because I believe that some old games are much better than modern games, even considering the aged visuals.
I agree about postponing games to play others, but what you said was "The ship has sailed", I thought you meant that Yooka-Laylee missed its chance of being considered? In that case, you would be missing something that you'd probably like.
@SKTTR Banjo-Kazooie is still the best 3D platformer ever made.
Than means I should change my profile picture, perhaps.
@Banjos_Backpack Playing Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask on 3DS is amazing. The artstyle, the music, the dungeons, the story... Those games are timeless. Even the controls are perfect, it's so easy to move, jump and do all the stuff. The 3D effect suits these games incredibly well. Super Mario 64 uses a previous version of the same engine, it should be remastered for 3DS as well.
@BlueOcean I see what you're getting at. When I said "the ship has sailed", I was moreso referring to the game's chances of recognition on the Switch. Had it released a bit earlier, people would have overlooked the flaws and given it a chance more readily, but unfortunately at this point it's going to be completely buried by Mario Odyssey.
@BlueOcean BotW is full to the brim with things to find, do and explore. Yes, I concede that the dungeons weren't great, but dull and empty world? Are you sure you're not talking about every other 3D Zelda world? They're basically a huge, empty hub world that only exists to connect dungeons. Hyrule field in OoT is completely devoid of life. TP is emptiness with random enemies standing around waiting for link to walk by.
Who gives a crap anymore?!
With the Switch titles now dropping thick and fast, you kinda blew your moment guys......
Working tirelessly != waiting for the arrival of Unity 5.6 in order to fix problems.
@SharkAttackU No, honestly, I feel that the worlds in Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess are much more beautiful and with much more meaning and soul. I've always liked Hyrule Field in Ocarina of Time as a more open area with Death Mountain and the Castle as the main reference points or Hyrule Castle Town in Twilight Princess. The areas in Majora's Mask are amazing. The world in Breath of the Wild is of course bigger and seamless, that was its selling point when they showed the first artwork but it doesn't make it better, in my honest opinion. Cloned stables, shrines, bunches of enemies and washed-out visuals.
@thesilverbrick Unfortunately, any game that is not Mario or Zelda will have a hard time on Switch, the best-selling third-party game is Mario + Rabbids.
I've always felt bad about smaller developers with awesome games that didn't get any attention (Cursed Mountain) or went bankruptcy on Nintendo's consoles and I bought most of those games when I had the money and, most of all, the time. I think I bought everything that wasn't crap for GameCube and Wii.
@Mykcir From what I played the game is "forever bad" anyway. It doesn't even reach the quality of the fun but flawed Donkey Kong 64 let alone the standards of Banjo-Kazooie and the like. After renting it on PS4 I have no desire to own it on Switch.
@BlueOcean Same here. I bought games like Zack and Wiki, Little King's Story and just about every indie that reviewed well on Wii U to show my support. In some respects, Nintendo is their own worst enemy when it comes to third-party support. Like it or not, people buy Nintendo consoles primarily for Nintendo games, so much so that even critically acclaimed third-party titles can't get any traction unless they feature Mario and company.
@thesilverbrick Zack and Wiki is one of my favourite Wii games and I played it at a very special time in my life, after having recovered from a serious accident. Little King's Story is another favourite.
@Pupito @Banjos_Backpack Absolutely right about N64 remakes. About Zelda, I know they wanted to make that chronology but to me it's like each game is the same legend in a different time, that would explain ancestors/descendants of some characters appearing in some games in spite of Link always being a child or a young man. I might be missing something, though. What I know is that I'd like the next Zelda game to be like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess.
Good night and thank you guys for the nice conversation. I'll read you tomorrow.
Banjo says hi!
I'm sure someone will growl at me over this, but all this garbage sounds like one excuse after another to me. I'm not sorry, but it does. They were late as WiiU rolled over and played dead so they had to start over, then they had problem after problem which we don't see others having using Unity too. Given the less than nice comments and reviews due specifically due to some funky design and persistent bug problems I almost want to lean towards some grade of incompetence.
As it stands now, I don't know if buying it at this rate makes any financial sense at all. The latest sales out right now via Steam/GoG(too I think) have it at 40% off. What reward is there for waiting other than being potentially portable? There's plenty enough third party support to go around now at lower (and higher) prices from far more notable and appreciated game studios old and new.
@Banjos_Backpack Whats wrong with Tooie's levels? I loved how expansive they were and used to love exploring them as a kid.
I kick backed this and still waiting for my Wii-U, er Switch code. Good things come to those who wait I guess...
@thesilverbrick trust me, this game is already irrelevant.
I lost interest in this game a long time ago.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE You kind of are and that terrible spelling of your name is the correct way...
Yeah, everyone will be playing Mario Odyssey by the time this comes out and won't be interested.
I have lost interest in this game completely
I know firsthand that Unity can be a real pain at times so I can fully give them the slack on this.
Sure people have waited a long time for the Nintendo platform version of this but I'd rather have a game that technically works in the end.
@thesilverbrick
I don't think Y-L can hit the eshop (long enough) before Mario Odyssey is released. A december release might be the way to go, especially if they do a physical release (as eshop games don't fit well under the Xmas tree).
@gatorboi352 You are very likely correct, but the game could've taken advantage of the 3D platformer vacuum months ago on Switch and at least sold some respectable numbers. Now it has next to nothing in its favor.
@Tibob At this point it's too late. They might be able to squeeze it out in a few weeks but even then, everyone is already too hyped for Odyssey to care.
Either come out in December 2017 or Spring 2018 & call it the 'definitive edition' XD
But in all seriousness, just dont come out during Super Mario Odyssey! Please dont! That's suicide! @_@
I like developers that release games that work on day 1. I'm buying it whenever it comes out, so I'd rather wait for them to properly finish it.
I'm still buying it.
I'm still going to buy this again after already owning the xbox version. I honestly did not see much wrong with it. The camera was an issue for a lot of people but they already released the update for that and it is confirmed to be in the switch version on day 1. The genre always received the same criticism so the reviewers are still using that to give them a bad score. Don't listen to reviews but listen to people who are fans of the genre and recognize the talent in playtonic.
Better hurry up with that Playtonic. If this comes out after Mario Odyssey I really won't care about this game any more.
@Banjos_Backpack "Zelda was a fantastic idea with a Link from a different era effectively in each game. It's like both a traditional sequel and a spiritual successor in one and it works so well. I'd love if something like an N64 mini allowed new games to be developed for it. Perfect platform"
I've had a few busy days. Yes, that's how I see The Legend of Zelda.
I think that that kind of games can still be developed for modern hardware. Yooka-Laylee was a missed opportunity in that sense. A new Zelda with a more meaningful world and more focused gameplay like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask or Twilight Princess could be possible on modern hardware, too.
As I said the other day, I believe that some developers waste resources and time trying to make something bigger while neglecting the thing as a whole.
@Pupito "Yeah I believe in the idea that there really isn't an exact timeline - just a legend with many different iterations. I think that's the best way to view it, but some titles are intrinsically linked like OOT and MM, WW and PH. I just think you could add one more to the Ocarina universe since it's the most celebrated and the 3DS engine is gorgeous.
One of my fav things about ALBW actually is when you zoom into the cut scenes it really looks like an N64 game with the Grezzo graphics. That entry ties all the legends together quite beautifully and is still my fave Zelda".
I've had some busy days.
Yes, that's what The Legend of Zelda is to me even though I've realised how some games make specific connections to other games. Not just the obvious ones but if I remember correctly one of the fishing areas in Twilight Princess has pictures of ancestors of living characters and you only get that information if you inspect them. In spite of that, The Legend of Zelda makes more sense as the same legend.
Grezzo did a fantastic job remastering the N64 games and even the 3D effect, that so many developers messed with, was brilliantly made by Grezzo. A Link Between Worlds is also a very nice Zelda game.
@Banjos_Backpack Nintendo and Rare were also very inspired when they were developing for Nintendo 64. Super Mario 64 is the first 3D platformer and it has a lot of cool ideas, more and better than more recent Nintendo games. Rare went the extra mile making everything better: Banjo-Kazooie, Diddy Kong Racing... Diddy Kong Racing mixed racing and adventure and included epic boss battles.
Ocarina of Time was an early 3D adventure with RPG elements, so well designed, so fun to play, with awesome controls and gameplay, beautiful cut-scenes using the technology available... Nintendo was sooo inspired in those years.
@Pupito Looks awesome. I wonder if he's using the Ocarina of Time engine, which is a modified Super Mario 64 engine.
I remember there was a project that didn't go anywhere about making a Majora's Quest alternative version or something like that and the developers said that it was difficult because developing for Nintendo 64 was extremely challenging and engines and games like Majora's Mask required very advanced programming skills, not like today that anyone can make an indie game.
I hope this project is finished and we'll have to download it quickly before Nintendo shuts it down, which is why I don't get that they announce these projects so early on in the process.
@Pupito The guy in the video says everything will be hand-drawn but the current Link model looks a bit ugly. The basic visuals are fine to me because reminds me of Ocarina of Time. I appreciate this approach and not trying to recycle Unreal textures.
Majora's Mask in particular was extremely challenging, also because Nintendo went a very long way to go to their goal and the fan developers have to navigate that "maze".
Another thing about Nintendo 64 is the memory available, tiny by today's standards but very well used by Nintendo and, most of all, Rare, that made a stunning N64 game that has to be seen to be believed: Conker's Bad Fur Day
@Banjos_Backpack Yeah, it's quite impressive!
@Banjos_Backpack "With limitation comes more creativity and higher quality products sometimes". That's true but the origin of that problem is psychological.
@Pupito I am excited about N64 Classic but the thing is that it would be "officially" missing so many important N64 games because many of them were made by Rare.
@Banjos_Backpack I know what you mean, though. They had to deal with a lot of limitations but they also found a way to make the ideas that they had in their minds possible.
I assume that they went home thinking of how to overcome those difficulties and the following day they came back to development with new solutions. Conker's Bad Fur Day in particular uses very advanced techniques and it doesn't even use the Expansion Pack!
Back to the present day, developers have many resources but a different team, even though some staffers might be the same people that worked at Rare or Nintendo, combined with a lack of brilliant ideas can lead to mediocre results. See New Super Mario Bros. 2.
@Banjos_Backpack Yep, designing a game for speedrunners is stupid unless it is just skipping cut-scenes or unnecessary stuff.
@Banjos_Backpack @Pupito Yeah, I expect that to happen, that's why I said "officially".
Hoewer, can you guys imagine the official "list"? It would be very lacking! People would look at the box in shops (if they can find any LOL) and think, Hey where's Goldeneye, Banjo-Kazooie, Killer Instinct Gold, Perfect Dark...?
Also, have you wondered how the controller would be? The SNES Classic controller is a 1:1 replica. Do you think Nintendo would make the same thing with the N64 controller, which was huge and unbalanced?
@Pupito Yep, 99% of the N64 games were controlled with the analogue stick and I also remember that unbalance feeling. You used to stretch your left hand, I used to hold the middle part to keep the balance so tightly that my left hand was always sweating. They'd need to redesign the controller. It should have rumble, too.
N64 Classic should include the Super Mario 64 rumble version that was only released in Japan.
@Pupito Yeah! The SNES classic controllers are awesome. I had the Wii SNES Classic Controller (Club Nintendo reward) already and I always use it for SNES games and Super Mario All Stars (Wii). It's not just nostalgia but the buttons and D-pad are much more responsive than any Wii or Wii U controllers. It's a must-have for 2D games and a much better choice. It's shocking how it feels much better than any controller made by Nintendo since.
This generation I got a New 3DS, Xbox One and Wii U and I play the classics on Wii U and Xbox One. Wii U's backwards compatibility and Virtual Console are my favourite features too.
@Banjos_Backpack But you would like the rumble to be built in, right?
