Shantae, WayForward's tentpole IP that's developed an audience on Nintendo portables in addition to other systems through remasters, is getting its next title very soon - Shantae: Half-Genie Hero. Crowdfunded and a decent amount of time in the making, we're now just a couple of weeks from playing it.
A fresh press release from publisher XSEED Games has normal news and bad news - the former is that the game is still coming to the Wii U eShop on 20th December. The bad news is that the slightly more expensive 'Risky Beats' retail version will be a little later than expected on Wii U; it's now coming to Nintendo's system in disc form on 27th December, one week later than the equivalent editions on PS4 and PS Vita.
It's slightly disappointing but not exactly the end of the world; those that have a pre-order down with the idea of popping a disc in their Wii U for Christmas will likely receive a notification from their retailer of choice soon. On the plus side it's coming to the eShop on schedule, so in theory we can all play it with a belly full of festive food.
Are you planning to pick up Shantae: Half-Genie Hero?

Thank you for the date! Now I know when I'll be picking this up.
I reckon it will be worth the wait for a music CD
Don't know this game. E3 trailer looks interesting.
Can't wait to finally play this game! Love the series!
Can we pre order yet? because I've just searched on Amazon and it still say's currently unavailable
XSEED, so no retail in Europe I assume? Ok, i will pick digital, don't want to wait for retail like I waited for Gunvolt Pack (which didn't happen).
I must say, although I've had my reservations about the art style, I do like the way they've drawn Risky Boots on the Risky Beats cover. Shantae also looks suitably tall on the CD, rather than the "Chibi" style.
No release in Europe?
20th? Thought I saw the 13th. Oh well. I'll still probably have to wait an extra week regardless.
I'm guessing this is NA only, even though you haven't actually bothered to mention that.
Price for the retail version?
Nice to see a company following through with a game on Wii U, and a disc at that. Good job and congrats to WayForward.
Now whatever happened to Darksiders: Warmastered on Wii U @ThomasBW84 ? They delayed it 3 weeks ago, both physical and digital, saying they'd let us know soon. "Soon" has kind of past for me at this point.
Oh well, at least as of 5 days ago they were still working on it.

ebgames website in australia doesnt have this game listed as coming soon or anywhere at all so im guessing this is NA only?
I just finished the last Shantae game last night, and I'm already ready for more! Really looking forward to it.
I remember this game being the focus of the second-to-last Nintendo Power issue, released back in November 2012. It's great to see that Half Genie Hero is almost here!
@Handy_Man That was the Pirate's Curse.
Rated T? Hmm I wonder why?
I'll buy an art book, not sure about the game.
@TonyCrispy
I thought the same thing. All the games are rated E10+ so why when they're all together makes them T I'll never know.
Huh ? Teen ? How can ? Is that because of sexiness or story content ?
@menzo1986 I recommend the Shantae series. The games are fun and humorous.
@Shiryu So far, only digital.
On disc eh? Cool, I can Gamefly it then
Finally! Can't wait for my download version!
This is coming out at the tail-end of the Wii U's lifespan just like the original did at the end of the Gameboy Color's lifespan. Maybe I should get a hard copy too just in case it gets super rare goes gold like the original version did.....
Maybe I skimmed the article too fast, but why the delay for the Wii U version? No complaints because it is amazing we are getting it at all.
@Anti-Matter I've played it and it must be the boobs, which is dumb, but it's the only thing I can think of.
So there's hope that Darksiders Warmastered Edition will still come out this year(December 31st).
If there's a European physical version, I'll buy it.
@Whopper744 The retail version will be $30,there's a strong possibility that the digital version may be $20(just like Pirates Curse.).
Backer codes have been sent on all consoles but Wii U. Hopefully they send them before the 20th
Anyway that CD looks sweet.
Woah, it's teen?! Sure it's Shantae, but Teen!
@Jessicoo
I Pre-ordered this today without problems (Amazon USA, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GTVDY9W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1)
well, only to wait.
I actually want this on PS4.
Awesome, can't wait to get it on the Vita!
This was the first thing I ever backed on Kickstarter. It's been a few years . Glad to see it's ret to go.
Oh man, WayForward tried so hard to keep the risque content but stay at an E10 rating, and yet this got the T rating it probably deserves. The question is, will their next game be less lewd to try to bring it back to E10, or now that they've crossed their personal red line, will it have so much lewd content it risks an M rating?
Will buy physical if/when it is released in Europe.
@SakuraHaruka That doesn't help sadly as that is Amazon USA, I use Amazon UK
Thank you, WayForward, for not cancelling Wii U version of such amazing game.
Wasn't there a story the other day about Half-Genie Hero having a PEGI 12 rating for "Violence", or am I imagining it? Risky's Revenge and Pirate's Curse both have a PEGI 12 for "Violence" and "Sex" (even though there's not really, but we know what they mean).
I know this is an ESRB T, but my point is it might actually be for the violence alone. If they have been brave enough to put the sexiness back in, I'd actually be impressed.
@MetalKingShield BREAKING: Super Mario Bros. Switch rated "T" for violent squashing of innocent Goombas
Lookin' sharp!
Looking forward too picking this up .
@rjejr Yeah, waiting for them to say something meaningful to be honest. Cheeky to delay so late in the day, I thought.
@ThomasBW84 Weren't all the Wii U delays late though? Rayman, W_D, I think they announced the Project Cars cancelation long after it was due.
You'd think at some point devs would catch on - "Hey, look at all these late delay announcements, Wii U must be hard to port too." 4 years after launch the difficulties of developing on Wii U shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.
Congrats on the 100k subs, enjoy the rest of your weekend.
I can't find a UK hard copy for love nor money. Am I missing something?
I'll wait and see if it comes out on Switch.
@TonyCrispy The funny thing about a game like this is that it looks T rated to an adult, and E rated to a kid...
I'm curious how it will run on Wii U compared to PC. I'm certainly tempted by the (what I'm sure will be elusive) Wii U retail copy, but the PC version is more likely to receive any updates or director's cuts, especially if one waits for a DRM-free version on someplace like GOG. This retail version is clearly a labor of love, though. I'm glad XSEED is carrying on the tradition of Working Designs as well as they can in the modern gaming market.
Hm... I think I need more information before making a decision.
@MetalKingShield All the painstakingly depicted jiggling and wiggling in this game, along with lightly dressed clothing, is what gives it the PEGI12/T rating... From an adult's perspective, anyways. Kids are just going to think it's funny/energetic, not sensual/erotic. Funny how rating systems work that way.
Take the cat pounce-looking "crouching" animation, for example:
Or even the basic transformation dance:
There may indeed be a discrepancy between how a child or an adult would interpret these.
I've already got it now as a backer, and it is pretty awesome!
The magic for money transformation is broken though as you can just sit in the bath house and constantly make money for yourself.
@LordMolecule So that's already one thing that can be patched out of the PC version, and will be in the Wii U version...
It's been delayed on amazon a few times,
But it still says the 20th for me...
might get this but right now im saving up for switch.
@PlywoodStick Her character model actually looks significantly "toned down" and less curvy in this version to me actually.
@PlywoodStick - Ha, yes, I see what you mean. Just to clarify what I meant, the other day @FinnTheWhovian said "The game was given a PEGI rating a few weeks back, so it should be here soon.", followed by (when asked if it was 12+)... "Yes, for violence." Sorry to bring you into it, Finn, I just wanted to reference the situation. So what I'm saying is that if it only has the "Violence" rating, the ESRB T or PEGI 12 might only be for that.
Regarding the animation, I agree there is a cheeky amount of jiggling/wiggling. Now that I have seen them in detail, I must say you are almost certainly right. Personally, I regret that they have made the character more childlike, as I would prefer her to have the full adult va-va-voom!
@Beau_Skunk Oh yeah, especially compared to the Snake Princess/Priestess outfit in Pirate's Curse. ...Or more accurately, the lack of an outfit.
Where can you get it from though? Ive seen nobody ofdfering pre-orders for it yet and thats a very close date.
@PlywoodStick I like how the games even poke fun at it's own "fan service."
"I look like a space princess!"
On GameStop, it says it releases on December 20th.
I've finished it and I gotta say that it is one of my favorite games of the year! Dark Souls III, Hyper Light Drifter, and this are all awesome!
@Jessicoo You can pre order it at gamestop, where I am, though I have no idea if it will have the CD.
