Rare’s Donkey Kong Country was a huge feat in itself when it was released on the Super Nintendo in 1994. Now imagine recreating the iconic jungle-based platformer within an entirely different game engine from around the same era.
Enter Doom, and insert the reminder here of just how crazy modders of the classic first-person shooter can actually be at times. Below is a total-conversion mod by user DooMero, that stands as the classic Donkey Kong Country experience rebuilt in GZDoom. It’s not just a themed Donkey Kong Doom modification, this is the original Donkey Kong game, with music, sprites and all.
Whilst it’s not half as smooth as the original experience (in more ways than one), it just goes to show what can be done when you’ve got a bit of spare time on your hands (roughly 20 years to be precise). Take a look below:
If you’re already developing an unhealthy obsession with the idea of this, then you can download a demo provided you have a copy of GZDoom, the mod, and a WAD file from one of the official Doom engine games. Prepare to be both impressed and slightly horrified by this unique spectacle.

Um... okay?
Needs more cyberdemons.
That's not crazy. The word creative would have more accurate.
Should you really be supporting this by linking to a demo? None of that artwork belongs to the people who created this, they're ripped sprites. Blatant copyright infringement.
@Usagi-san It's a fan project, and as far as I know, the maker didn't claim the characters as his own. Also, there have been mods for games featuring Nintendo characters before (Pokecraft, anyone?).
@NintendoFan64
I'm not seeing your point. It's still copyright infringement.
that looks very good and playable
I can't see anything notably worse (or better?) seeing as I've only seen glimpses of the original and I was too young to have properly played either doom or country
You know, when you're writing a little easter egg script at the end, it would help if you know English...
Cool but look worse than the original but you got to love the creativity of some.
Looks pretty cool, but I wonder what makes it so jerky.
Seeing these stages in faux 3D kinda makes me wish we could get a 3D classics release.
@Usagi-san Majority of companies don't care if fans use their content for mods as long as they are not charging people for the mod.
If the people who made the mod were charging people for it which had content taken directly from a game then yes it would be copyright infringement.
@Usagi-san it's no different to drawing a picture or writing fan fic. Nintendo won't be upset in the least, unless they try and make money.
It's also no different to all the YouTube videos of people singing their favourite songs.
@SilentHunter382 Copyright infringement isn't based off whether the person is earning money or not.
@Usagi-san Nor will it do any good if the criminal can't afford to pay the fine. You think that by just making a game that's free and adds no profit would do some harm for Nintendo? If anything, these fans are helping Nintendo by making people aware of the characters rather than seeing them through Nintendo products only.
Personally, most games are a bit decent compared to the original like AMR2 for Metroid 2.
just kinda looks like what Donkey Kong Country might have looked like if it was running on a 32-bit system
@Usagi-san its a thin line what would be classed as copyright infringement and free advertising with internet mods and viral videos nowadays. Much money has been made by fan made campaigns featuring well known image rights used without permission. If it made them money they set it slide. In this case the rights would belong to id and rare. Since rare will never use the brand again and id are desperate to resurrect the doom brand, i would file this under 'no harm done'. Relax
I personally don't see what's so strange and "weird" about this mod. It's just a neat idea... Although I really don't think this is worth an article.
Woah. That is super pro.
@Usagi-san: Copyright infringement? Yeah, sure. Does anybody care? No. This is as harmless as fan fic. It's not competing with Nintendo's products in any way (be it sales or piracy or what have you), and it's obvious that Nintendo didn't make this. If this Doom mod were to be paraded around as a prototype of a N64 port of DKC or painted DK and Co. in a bad light or something like that, then yeah, Nintendo might want to take it down.
I used to be anal about copyright like you. Then I stopped where it didn't make moral sense and found these things more enjoyable.
@Usagi-san its not if its a parody
@SetupDisk Creating a platformer out of a FPS's engine could be defined as 'crazy' due to how most people wouldn't expect the transfer to actually happen or even be possible.
@Usagi-san You should call the authorities right away! Such a blatant illegal act! Save us all, call the police!
@MC808 It is an illegal act.
Anybody remember this: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/11/full_screen_mario_web_game_closed_down_following_nintendos_copyright_complaint
@CrimsonMoonMist
But isn't that what retro did with DKF?
@Usagi-san
There is a difference in a mod and just blatantly copying a game directly, which is what the Mario web game did. This DK mod was just somebody having fun in showing off what the game would have looked like using a different engine. Yes there are some infringements with this, but they are minor at best and are nowhere near as bad as the web game.
Everything is better with a bit of DKC in it. Too bad that life signs from the original games' creators are so... rare, nowadays. Thankfully whenever we want to go retro, there are the right studios to pull it off.
(Puns galore!)
uhh WTF!?
actually, it doesn't look THAT bad
@Usagi-san Oh you're right, man. It's an unforgiveable transgression perpetrated on all of humanity. The huge Nintendo fans who commit such an act are what's wrong with the world today.
Btw, that's called sarcasm. Sadly, I feel a need to point that out to some people on here.
In a fit of rage I ripped the tag off my mattress today...I should probably turn myself in to the authorities. That is the level of absurdity being demonstrated here.
Come on now, let's leave the exaggerated 'sarcasm' out of this and not go out of our way to make disagreements personal, please and thank you. :3
As somebody who has modded (G)ZDoom in the past, I know how tough it is to rework Doom's FPS-based engine into a fully functional side-scrolling game. I'm impressed that it runs as well as it does. Most of the "jerky" movement cannot be helped, it's just how the Doom engine was designed to work.
Hahaha, this actually looks very nice. Platforms are actually 3d rendered in this one.
Needs a 3ds port!!
Can't believe I didn't see this the first time around, it's amazing!
