USA VC Update: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Master System)

Posted by Marcel van Duyn

It's the third week in a row with just one VC game! This time, it's a big-name title, but to be honest, even fans of the franchise might be disappointed.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Master System is not at all like the Genesis version. Yes, it's a platformer as well, but the levels, bosses and almost everything else is completely different. This game also introduces vehicles, such as hanggliders and minecarts. Like the first Sonic on the Master System, it's a good game, but nowhere near as good as its console counterpart.

That's it! On WiiWare, you can grab two new games this week - Bruiser & Scratch and Hockey Allstar Shootout.

As a note unrelated to this week, what is holding up the vast majority of the third party games from the systems? Of course some games have be bogged down in legal limbo (especially if the company went out of business), but there is a vast back library that Nintendo needs to tap here.

Honestly, there's no excuse for them to keep doing this. There hasn't been a single game released that I've been even slightly interested in downloading since MM3 released almost a month ago. I realize that their primary focus is Wiiware right now, and I gladly support both services, but why can't they just release 2 games for both VC and WW? I don't see how that's so difficult!

Hopefully they'll give us something cool for Christmas. <crosses fingers for Kirby's Dreamland 3 or Earthbound.>

On the bright side, we got B&S on Wiiware, and since everything else is crap, I have less to distract me from my midterm preparations. :P

@chunky_droid: They could've gotten super obscure (and import-y while they were at it) and released Mario and Wario when Wario Land: Shake It! came out or something. Actually, this week's release almost looks like a lame (and slightly delayed) Sonic Unleashed tie-in, so maybe Nintendo IS still doing those, albeit far crappier ones than last year.

I've given up on EVER expecting good things from the VC. I started to a couple months ago in that SMRPG-Secret of Mana period when it was all quality (whether I wanted a particular game or not), but that just lead to the disappointment of now. Better to expect crap EVERY week and be overjoyed when something good comes out, I guess...

I downloaded Bruiser & Scratch and am enjoying it very much, but I'm getting reeeeeeeaaaaaaally tired of this recent string of one-game VC releases. They haven't been atrocious games but the problem is that last week's Metal Slug 2 is available by other means, aka Metal Slug Anthology, which gives you a lot more bang (no pun intended) for your buck. This week's Master System version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 isn't a bad game, but it's really only for the hardcore Sonic devotees. Where on earth are the 2-3 game weeks where we get a diverse string of titles like Dracula's Curse, Kirby's Dream Land 3, Earthworm Jim 2, Earthbound, A Boy and his Blob, Pilotwings, or Uncharted Waters? Not to mention the surprise treat titles Nintendo releases occasionally. I hope you have something really grand in mind for Christmas time, NoA, because this one-mediocre-game-per-week treatment is getting old.

The biggest thing I hate in the original Sonic games is Eggman as the final boss. With the exception of Sonic 3 I believe, you have no rings to fight with, and when you take one hit (which happens very quickly), you die. He is just too hard. That's why I've haven't beaten Sonic 2 or 3 yet (without using god mode).

Clayfrd

#79

Clayfrd said:

I beat Sonic 2 using exploits of the two final boss's fighting patterns. You can beat both of them fairly easily without ever really risking getting hit. Well... the way I defeat the Robotnik walker thing isn't an exploit, but the way I defeat Metal Sonic is an exploit. The other way to beat Metal Sonic isn't particularly hard either, though, it's just riskier. Sonic 3, however, I am still working on (I'm on the last level). I've beaten the final boss fairly easily using level select on Sonic 1, but I've never gotten to the boss legitimately, which is also something I'm working on. I guess the only Sonic games I've beaten legitimately (not counting 3d Sonics) are Sonic CD and Sonic Advance. I guess I can count Sonic 2, though, since I can blaze through the whole game in about an hour, maybe less.

I think we need to set our standards as low as possible. We should lobby for 1 game per month. Heck, we don't even deserve that much......maybe one game per major holiday. But perhaps that would still be an unfair burden to place on Big N ......we really shouldn't be so demanding and ungrateful.

Indeed as the Big N would probably put it ....... Let them eat cake!!

This message has been brought to you by the Committee for People Not Being Passive Doormat Consumers.

.
There's being appreciative for things provided in the past, and THEN there's also being honest about the treatment happening in the present. People remaining silent and thankful for Big N's crumbs when this is a market where money talks ............ I really don't know what to say to folks who don't want to at least try to drive their own car. Metaphorically speaking.

In other news, as single games go, this week could have been worse. And it could have also been a lot better. If 1 game weeks are Big N's way of enhancing the appreciation of the few games of top quality that are featured and released (probably like for Christmans), then I'd say they were nuts....... cept for the fact that the starve (for months at a time) and then pamper (for a week or two at a time) marketing strategy seems to be working on some of their customers. Can a manipulative marketing strategy really be "wrong" if it's successful? If I drop a house on someone and no one saw me (caught me) do it, did that person still get pancaked??

(Sorry, I'm getting philosophical again. :P )

Anyway, with the US having been staked in the heart again this week (well that may be a bit harsh, since it was at least a Hedgehog game), I do what I can and pray for Europe to get a better VC week(s) than us. Let them eat Mario Golf and Secret of Mana!!

And I'll continue to expect nothing each week (for the US VC releases) and settle for the imagination of what it would be like to have long-term positive release trends that would give me a reason to get excited in advance of each week.

I could live undisappointed with two VC releases per week of garbage for months at a time far better than one release per week that alternates garbage/fair/garbage/great/garbage/fair/garbage......... I only have so many weeks left in my life Big N!!
And even fewer before you release your next Next-Gen system and start ignoring VC gaming even more than now..........................

I suppose Big N might be wanting to push folks toward buying $50 games rather than supplying better $5 game availability. I just wish they'd say so up front and give us an advance schedule of the multitude of drought stages. I'm running out of anti-depressants at this rate! :)

To be honest though, I think we should get used to this slower rate of releases. Europe/Pacific copped it once when we went from VC release every week, to VC release every fortnight. I still fondly remember many an epic fail picture.

I don't regret getting a Wii, but let's just say I'm glad its not the only system I have.

A lot of people seem to speaking about the 'AVGN'. "Tony, don't be like AVGN--he's got a potty mouth. Maybe he'll outgrow it when he has kids to raise who imitate him." - stinssd

"I think the AVGN just likes to complain because it makes him feel important. Alot of the games he screams and moans about I actually like." - slangman

Those quotes made me laugh. Do you idiots even realise what the the AVGN is? AVGN is merely a FICTIONAL character portrayed by James Rolfe (who created the character), AVGN ISN'T REAL - the AVGN doesn't exist outside the videos he appears in. James Rolfe is an intelligent, artistic (the AVGN is a creation, they're scripted) quiet, mild-mannered, married man - so I doubt his kids will "copy his potty-mouth" (he's apparently nothing like the AVGN, he's quiet and doesn't swear) and I doubt he gets any sort of ego boost from complaining about games (although he will probably be pleased to be making a living off moaning about games). There really are some stupid people out there (the fact you tried to act all clever by saying how the AVGN should 'grow up' makes you look like a complete clown to me), and it feels so good to deprive them of their ignorance.

Thank you.

David Letternan and Jay Leno follow scripts too. What's your point?

I prefer Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw to the Angry Video Game Nerd. His reviews are smarter and funnier. Plus, Yahtzee reviews newly released titles. I don't understand the point of tearing apart a game that was made 20 years ago.

I like the AVGN for his voice, his stage presence, his humor, his insight and his mannerisms. AVGN is so much more than some guy swearing on a video - anybody with a video camera and a youtube account can do that. And many have tried but they just can't come close to James' character. Sure AVGN swears a lot but its not that he swears, its the way he does it. When you sit down to watch a new AVGN video, you don't need to know the game to know that you're almost guaranteed to have an enjoyable twenty minutes or so. Sure some episodes have gimmicks, a guest character or scene played out, there's only really been two bad videos though - the ** Pickle one and the crossover with some other people at christmas.

#99: We tear bad videogames apart all the time here, the only difference is that he's doing it on video as part of an act for viewers to watch rather than posting about it on a message board like we do. And his audience are 20/30-somethings who nostalgia for the games or at least the era he's talking about.

Different strokes for different folks. I'm sure the AVGN is just a character, but some people just don't care for him, or the character if you prefer. (I think he's pretty hit and miss, but when he's good he's pretty funny.)

Heheh you apologise for spelling for a game name in your post?? lol. But anyway, I agree with you on the PS3 and 360 christmas releases. They've got it in spades over nintendo's current releases. About all we have had for christmas is WiiMusic and has anyone played it? I haven't even looked at it, I'm not a music person, but its certainly not my cup of tea. And yes, you would think the VC would provide an avenue to compete with PS3 and 360, but nintendo doesn't seem to be taking it, probably due to the low publicity that the VC receives as well as lack of available games to put on the service.

@Atlantis (94)
I know, it bugs me too. :p

Don't. Or you could just not read the comments and your problems are solved. Also notice that some VC releases (cough)Booger man(cough) are a lot more annoying than any stupid comments from whiny fan boys like me. The fact is we got one game, and we can all have opinions.

At least be honest about your visits.

Your stands are well known. You don't believe that Nintendo dropped the ball with storage, you don't believe it's reasonable for ppl to want more than one average VC game a week and you don't think that anyone here deserves to have their voice heard if it isn't singing Nintendo's praises. Well, this obviously isn't the most productive place for you to visit. Let ppl have their opinions. Engage them in productive and intelligent debate. Agree to disagree. But plz stop being an acerbic @ss, and stop insulting everyone and complaining about our disappointment in Nintendo. Thank you.

@Cally - Probably... some sort of misguided business model/plan... but it sucks. Not every VC gamer is interested in Wiiware and the opposite is true as well. I also don't think it would be as much of an issue if the Wiiware games kicked @ss. Given the dirth of quality games, the lack of really good VC releases stands out. Add to that the slow to a trickle and you have some understandably disappointed VC gamers.

Anyways, regardless of this being my least favorite Sonic game, (I'd even go so far as to say the Shadow game was better) it's nice to see them releasing a new 8-bit Master System/Game Gear Sonic title.

Still, I always feel cheated when they onley release one VC game a week, instead of two. Hopefully, they'll later on release 3-game releases to make up for it. (Wich I doubt.)

@ Virus: That makes you an observer who watches complainers complain about complainers who complain about complainers who complain about the game or the one release week;
a complainer who complains about everyone complaining either: about others complainers, about the game, or about complainers complainig about the one release week or;
a complainer who complains about complainers who complain about complainers who complains about complainers complaining about the game or the one release week.
Wow, that is very confusing. Please no one add to that because I can barely understand that explanation.

At least it's something and no one owes you ANY cheese. I don't want to hear any whining about how you have no place to store your cheese either! Just spend a morning cleaning out your fridge and put the cheese your currently not eating in a large box and have a friend who has room store it. You wouldn't be able to get it right away if you want to eat it or cook with it; you'd have to move the other cheese around again. But it's there. And no one told you to buy so much cheese! Huh. My contribution was rejected because I said the Japanese Sonic 2 came out in 1992.
"Notes: See http://sega.jp/archive/segahard/master/soft.html - Master System games stopped production in 1989" My fault, I wrongly assumed that the Japanese game came out same year as in Europe. Does anybody know what year the Japanese SMS Sonic 2 came out?

And I'd like to complain about Sonic Tuesdays............... but it's just too cool a concept to ever complain about.

As far as typical Wii usage goes, I seem to be either mindlessly doing polls or playing River City Ransom of late. I REALLY need to hunker down and polish off Mega Man 9. A criminal lack of attention lately on my part.

I fully support a little gamesmanship about who's ahead in the release total. Something interesting, yet meaningless to discuss while waiting for something of actual value to be released for the VC ......one of these weeks. One of these one game weeks. I believe NA has 2 more games than Europe as it currently stands, but if people in Europe change their settings to Australia, they can get Axelay (and I think the currency conversion would be in your favour). In that case NA is ahead by 1.

I'm sure that Nintendo America will make up for the past few weeks with a kick ass release around christmas, but will we see Europe take the lead over the evil north america?? Or shall north america snatch victory from the jaws of defeat?? Only time shall tell. Tune in next fortnight, same time, same website where a winner shall be decided!! [/LAMENESS]

I take offense to you saying "evil North America". Remember it was North America who saved Europe's butts not once but twice during both World Wars. If it wasn't for North America, the Nazis would still be around.
