"I mostly dislike retro games, though some exceptions exist."
I wonder if having an appreciation for retro games is like having an appreciation for silent movies. People who watched silent movies when they were new probably have a better appreciation for them than people who watched them after talking picture were the norm. Maybe you had to play these retro games when they were first out to appreciate them.
And even though the Nintendo 64 wasn't my favorite console, there were still some great games for it. Here's my top ten N64 list:
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Excitebike 64
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
The New Tetris
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber
Perfect Dark
Quake II
Resident Evil 2
San Francisco Rush 2049
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

@Sean Aaron
I'd love to see LucasFilm and Electronic Arts games show up on the Virtual Console, but LucasArts and Electronic Arts haven't signed on to the Virtual Console. Neither have Midway or Activision.
@Mike
I'm sorry for picking on the Nintendo 64. It may not have been my favorite game system, but for a lot of you, it was. I guess I just don't consider the Nintendo 64 a classic game console. I still look at it as a modern game console. I can also tell you that due to licensing issues, the number of N64 games we'll see on the Virtual Console will be few.

firebrand commented on USA VC Update: Commodore 64 Launches With Thre...:
I'm getting tired of all this hate for non-Nintendo consoles. Believe it or not, people did play video games before the NES. I grew up playing video games on the Atari 400 and the Atari 800. I'm glad they're releasing Commodore 64 games on the Virtual Console because many of the Atari 400/800 games were also available on the Commodore 64.
Also, I don't get the love all of you have for the Nintendo 64. Did any of you actually own a Nintendo 64 ten years ago?

Hagane is gone. Further evidence that Hudson has abandoned the Virtual Console. No more Adventure Island or Bomberman games. That stinks!

firebrand commented on USA VC Update: Kirby's Dream Land 3:
@Rapadash6
"I think, even if the rumors about Hudson are true, Rondo of Blood still has a chance of making it's way to the North American and European Virtual Console services. In the Alien Crush Returns Hudson interview, which can be found at the WiiWare World site, they were specifically asked about that title and the response was "that's up to Konami." ""
According to the ESRB, Hudson published Gradius II for the Virtual Console. This doesn't bode well for Rondo of Blood. Also, doesn't Konami own Hudson?
#6
firebrand commented on USA VC Update: Kirby's Dream Land 3:
Ugh. Another one game week. I think this is a permanent policy now. Oh well. I guess we'll have to live with it.
Hey, can anyone tell me if Hudson has abandoned the Virtual Console?
#7
firebrand commented on USA VC Update: Phantasy Star IV:
@Cally
"Also, why would Hudson "give up" on the VC? Thankfully they got the shooters out before realizing they (probably) weren't too popular, but shouldn't they give Rondo of Blood a go and watch the downloads go crazy before giving up? Sheesh."
Maybe Hudson is giving up on the VC because of Nintendo's insane release policy. It's not like they have a say in when their games come out. Maybe it's not worth their trouble.
I really wish Konami would just port the PSP Dracula X game for the Wii. Of course they won't, but that would the logical thing to do.

"Nintendo has blundered its way thorugh three years of this idiocy, for anyone to try and even attempt to promote the VC as a superior service to Live Arcade is frankly ridiculous in the light of what we've seen."
Yeah, I can't argue with you. If it wasn't for the Red Ring of Death, I'd have gone with Microsoft this time around. Live Arcade is superior to the Virtual Console.

firebrand commented on USA VC Update: Enduro Racer:
I'll stick it out with the Wii for the rest of its lifecycle, but if Nintendo thinks I'm going to buy HD Wii, they're crazy. I think I read a rumor somewhere that the next Wii will have greater emphasis on downloadable content. There should be greater emphasis on downloadable content now!

@WiiGamer24
David Letternan and Jay Leno follow scripts too. What's your point?
I prefer Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw to the Angry Video Game Nerd. His reviews are smarter and funnier. Plus, Yahtzee reviews newly released titles. I don't understand the point of tearing apart a game that was made 20 years ago.

@Gh0sTiE5
"Who thinks that NoA are building up for a bumper week of awesome games near Christmas?"
Not me. We'll probably get Earthworm Jim 2 and Clayfighter before the end of the year, but I don't expect more than that.

firebrand commented on USA VC Update: Metal Slug 2:
@MaxPlastic
"Also for those of you who complain about Nintendo and it's new casual approach, I read something a month or so ago. UK's very own EDGE magazine had an article on the matter, and they made a very good point. Nintendo have been around for 120 years and they've only been developing games for about 20-23 of those years. So if they move into something else, or transform their games into something else for someone else, who are we to blame them?"
Who are we to blame them? Nintendo billed the Wii as game system for those who play games, those who have played games, and those who have yet to play games. The Wii was for current Nintendo fans, fans of retro games, and for people who had never played a video game before.
I don't think they've been serving any of these groups well for most of 2008. Virtual console releases have been spotty and there have been few quality releases on the Wii for both the core Nintendo fans and the casuals.
#13
firebrand commented on USA VC Update: Metal Slug 2:
It looks like the rest of 2008 will be a wash for the Virtual Console. I'll stick it out with the Wii for the rest of its lifespan, but if Nintendo thinks I'm going to buy Wii 2, they're crazy. Nintendo had better hope the casuals are loyal.

"Perhaps some of the complainers should just play some of the other really good games that have come out recently, or get on with enjoying the vast array of games they probably already have instead of belly-aching that certain games they do want haven't already come out."
I probably wouldn't be belly aching as much about the VC if there were some actual Wii games out there for me to play. Nintendo thought that a glorified noise maker(Wii Music) and a fourth release of the same game(Animal Crossing: City Folk) would be enough to satisfy us for the fourth quarter. And don't even get me started on Wii third party support. I hope 2009 is a better year for the Wii than 2008.

I knew we weren't going to get Castlvania III. For all of you guys who said NOA was waiting for Castleania Judgement to come out before they released Castlevania III, guess what? You were wrong! Nintendo has just told everyone in North America to eat boogers!

firebrand commented on USA VC Update: Mega Man 3:
Mega Man 3 is one of the great NES games. I do find it odd that they're releasing it so soon. Anyway, I'm not so much bothered by the Virtual Console these days as I am by the fact that Nintendo tried to pawn WiiMusic off on us.

Awesome! I was starting to worry that we'd never see Castlevania III. And Dracula X for the SNES isn't all that. I actually own that game. I'd much rather see Castlevania Bloodlines come to the Virtual Console.

firebrand commented on Bionic Commando Not Approved For Virtual Console:
I think Nintendo chooses games for the Virtual Console completely at random. I don't think they have a master plan for what will or will not be released. I believe Bionic Commando will show up on the Virtual Console one day. When is anyone's guess.

No, you're not wrong in buying another console. I've been thinking about doing the same. I don't like how Nintendo and other publishers are doing the bare minimum as far as the Wii goes. And if Nintendo thinks I'm going to buy watered down Wii versions of Star Wars: The Force Unleased and Tomb Raider Underworld, they have another thing coming.

Yes, I did try Magician Lord. I remember seeing that one advertised in game magazines back in the day. I always saw it as the rich person's game. As far as the game goes, it's not the worst I've ever played or the best. Like you, I'm on the fence.

Ironically, Splatterhouse 2 has been on my wishlist for over a year now. But yeah, I understand why people are annoyed. Bait and switch. Kind of like when Nintendo told me that the Wii was a game system instead of a glorified toy.

Welcome aboard. I know how you feel about having nothing to buy. By the way, I just bought Neo Geo Arcade Classics vol. 1 for Wii. The emulation is spot on and I don't have to worry about storage.

I'm sorry. I can't let this go. Can you please tell me what was the point of me sticking with Nintendo through the hard times of the Nintendo 64 and the GameCube, only to see them become number one and then get kicked to the curb by them?

"I tolerate the fact that the releases across the board are lame, but again, what's with just sticking with Nintendo all the time?"
You have to understand that many of the Americans on these forums are hardcore Nintendo fans. There are plenty of hardcore gamers in the United States who aren't Nintendo fans, but they don't own Wiis. The Wii is fast becoming a joke in the gaming community over here.

firebrand commented on USA VC Update: Super Fantasy Zone and Gley Lancer:
Before everyone starts complaining about the Virtual Console, I think you should know that Nintendo is not listening. The state of the Virtual Console is a symptom of a greater problem with the Wii. My advice to everyone: Buy normal video games for the Wii and avoid the casual garbage. I think we all need to promise that we won't buy Wii Music. Who's with me?
#35
firebrand commented on USA VC Update: Super Fantasy Zone and Gley Lancer:
Eh. Not for me. Plus, I don't like the idea of paying extra for imports. Prices on the Virtual Console should be set.

"Still, even with Nintendo's disappointing E3 conference, I'm still not convinced to make a move onto the other two."
I don't plan on getting a PS3 until fall of 2009. By then, Sony should have a good selection of Greatest Hits titles. Maybe they'll even have a price reduction for the console. My problem with the Wii is that there are only three titles coming out this year that I'm interested in. They are Wario Land: Shake, de Blob, and Deadly Creatures. I can name ten for the PS3:
1. Soul Calibur IV
2. Silent Hill: Homecoming
3. Fallout 3
4. LittleBigPlanet
5. Dead Space
6. Mirror's Edge
7. Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe
8. Prince of Persia
9. Bionic Commando Rearmed
10. BioShock

Wario Land:Shake It! wasn't mentioned at Nintendo's E3 press conference. Neither was Mario Super Sluggers for that matter. It was all Wii Sports Resort, Wii Music, Shaun White, sales charts, and soccer moms.
As far as I'm concerned, Nintendo has backstabbed us. I would be wary of the 360. They tend to break on people. The PS3 seems the best choice at the moment.

I wouldn't say it's off-topic. The E3 press conference showed us that Nintendo no longer cares about its core audience. They're making so much money off the casual gamers that they don't need us anymore. How can we expect Nintendo to take the Virtual Console seriously when they're so focused on the casual market?
