Earlier in December, when it was revealed Joker from Persona 5 would appear as a fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate during the 2018 Game Awards, rumours about the game itself coming to Nintendo's hybrid platform began to surface. These rumours only intensified as the month went on and now we've finally got some more information.
Atlus has at last confirmed the existence of Persona 5 R with the above teaser trailer and by also launching the game's website. It's worth noting the name has not been confirmed yet and is still referred to as "P5R" by Atlus. According to Gematsu, no platforms have been officially revealed, but it seems like the PlayStation 4 is highly likely to receive the title, as the logo is at the beginning of the trailer.
Still, don't let this dampen your spirits, as we've seen other games such as Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled at the Game Awards revealed with only PlayStation on display and confirmed for multiple other platforms, including the Switch. During the brief teaser clip for P5R, "new projects" flashes up on the monitors in the background as well.
The "P5R" teaser trailer followed on from the Persona 5 animation broadcast. Based on a Persona News Channel post, more information about this new title will be revealed in March 2019.

Take my money!
Ha. Yeah this ain't coming to Switch. There you go.
It’ll either be revealed in March or in a Nintendo direct before I reckon. There’s no way Nintendo would choose Joker in Smash without some motive.
Oh...sorry, I seem to have loaded Pushsquare again...
Its PS4. Lol people really thinking this was going be Switch exclusive.
So Nintendo gives them free promotion featuring their character in the new big fighting game, yet they reveal a new game for Playstation.
GG
Might want to put on the headline that It has NOTHING TO DO WITH NINTENDO SWITCH... clickbait much?
@Itachi2099 You act like this hasn't happened before.
With Snake.
And Simon.
And Richter.
Just because PlayStation gets the reveal teaser doesn’t mean it’s not coming to Switch. This wouldn’t be the first time a game gets revealed by PlayStation and ends up on other consoles. Nintendo and Microsoft also get that privilege at times.
@Knuckles-Fajita Snake has several games on Nintendo platforms, Simon and Richter are classic 8-16bit characters who have games associated generally with Nintendo platforms(Richter much less so, but still)
Dont think Nintendo will reveal anything anytime soon. This would apply with other big game news. They dont want to take any focus away from Smash
Come back when (or if) something for Switch actually is revealed.
This is the kind of articles I would love to see less of on this site in 2019.
@DoctorOverbuild Mostly agreed, there's a small chance Joker could be promoting just Persona Q2 instead but 3DS games don't really need promotion nowadays, a small Nintendo Direct presence is enough.
Was it meant to be exclusive? I thought it was on both formats. They’ll probably announce it at a Direct or later as it may follow the pattern of being PS4 first then Switch later.
Considering P3+4 Golden came out for the PSP, and Joker is coming to smash, no reason not to believe P5R won’t be coming to the Switch yet. To think they’d just rip the game from Sony as an exclusive seems a ludicrous idea, so don’t know why ppl thought that ever. Ripping the heart entirely out a long parternship between Persona and Sony? Nah. Yeah the trailer didn’t confirm anything Switch-related, but the trailer didn’t really confirm ANYTHING period lol. Chill bruh.
TI SI HABBENIGN
@jswhitfield8 Snake Eater was released first on what console...?
Re-release the same game on the same platform, greed at its finest, bravo
The best possible scenario for Atlus and fans has always been a Switch/PS4 release (PC and Xbox too I guess but that’s far less realistic) so hopefully that’s how this goes. That said we don’t even know what this is yet so there’s no point getting too excited or disappointed now.
The Persona 5 dance games will be ported to Switch instead of the actual game itself. Now THAT would be maddening but hilarious
Remember how everyone was convinced that Switch was getting Symphony of the Night when Simon Belmont was revealed to be on the roster?
Don’t get your hopes up.
Just to confirm, is there any actual evidence for Persona on Switch beyond Joker in Smash and one of the new urls having an "S" at the end? Did I miss something else? Because if that's it, we gotta slow our roll here and stop acting like every piece of Persona news points to the inevitability of Persona 5 on Switch.
Still cautiously optimistic.
@turntSNACO Nothing except what you mentioned.
So quick, slow the rolls and calm the buns.
@moduz94 I guess it's gonna be the "complete edition" that includes all the DLC the vanilla version had, with a few added bonuses.
Plot twist: It's not coming to the Switch but thanks for the free promo.
-Soulja Boy
@BanjoPickles When did get Castlevania though but on the NES Switch Online Service, just not Symphony of the Night.
@moduz94 To be quite honest they did the same thing with Shin Megami Tensei IV for 3DS. There's the regular version and the Apocalypse version.
I don't really know anything about the series, but I'll be very upset that he's in smash and the game not on Ninty ... I feel metal gear should come as well ... We got FF coming so less hate for cloud lol
@Jriibz Sorry, I forgot to include the fact this reveal was linked to the Game Awards. I've added that in now.
If you watched the Game Awards live, you'll see they used the PlayStation trailer during the reveal of Crash Team Racing. See the timestamp video link I added to the news post.
For those using the Smash and Portable reasons keep in mind the following:
Cloud didnt give us anything FF7 for years even though it was "all but confirmed" it meant FF7 remake was coming to Wii U and/or NX.
Same as above regarding Belmont and Symphony of the Night.
And for the crew going the portable angle. Atlus are still actively developing for the Playstation Vita and P5 is a PS3 game. It'll run just fine for a Vita release.
There is no real hints here. Just us blind speculating with hopes and dreams. Which is fine of course.
This port begging is becoming tiring. I already played P5, I want new games.
That's what I expected. Mainline Persona is exclusive to the Playstation brand.
@retro_player_22
We haven’t gotten Castlevania.
@BanjoPickles Dammit I must dream about it then.
@retro_player_22
You and me both. Ideally, I would love to see some of the entrees that we haven’t seen released a million times over. I mean, why hasn’t Bloodlines ever seen a rerelease? The GBA/DS trilogy would be awesome (honestly, I think that Aria, and Dawn, of Sorrow are better games than SotN).
I'm expecting a new Nintendo Direct soon.
@XenoShaun The fact Nintendo is choosing characters this time (Fighters Pass is Nintendo's only picks) means comparisons with Snake, Cloud and the Belmonts don't mean much if anything.
Just get a PS4 and you have no need to keep hoping/begging you can play all the great games on it (or waiting 3 years to play them)
This is as crazy as my PC friends who have "no need for a Nintendo system" but later get excited over 10 year old Nintendo games via emulation 🙄
@Agramonte well to be fair some people can't afford to buy multiple consoles, but aside from that i agree with you. Also P5 is so overrated i had more fun with DQ11, and Octopath i still havent beat P5.
Is the last few Microsoft E3 presentations taught me anything, it's that just because someone had an exclusive reveal of a game, doesn't mean it will be exclusive to their platform.
Dont get your hopes up people is all I'm saying. If it happens then great!
@retro_player_22 But SMT IV and Apocalypse are different games?
@retro_player_22 Don't know if you are serious or not. But SMT IV Apocalypse is a sequel to SMT IV, it has different charachters, areas, everything.
It certainly is not a rerelease on the same system.
@Agramonte
To be honest, I have multiple systems. Whenever a game is announced for Switch, before I’ve had the chance to pick it up for PS4, I hold out for the Switch conversion. I’m a sucker for having games on the go.
@Itachi2099 square enix did it with final fantasy's cloud
it's nothing new.
could say the same about Snake despite that remake of MGS3 on the 3DS there hasn't been any new MGS games on Nintendo systems
@Knuckles-Fajita With Cloud (until 2019)
@Agramonte Besides Spiderman, there's nothing else on the PS4 that really catches my interest. and what do you mean "waiting 3 years to play them"? Crash came out on the Switch within a year, and looks like we going to get Crash Team Racing at the same time on all platforms.
@Agramonte Getting a PS4 in 2019 for three games seems a little bit silly to me.
P5R will either be a PS4 exclusive, or it will be a multiplatform title with PS marketing.
I never believed it would be a Switch exclusive or that it would skip the PS4.
@jswhitfield8 Snake Eater was never released on GameCube
Probably announcing a 'definitive edition' but go along the golden route and add new content. And most likely announce the Joker Amiibo.
@Itachi2099 not even a month later when Simon and Richter were confirmed for smash bros, Konami released a trailer for a PlayStation exclusive bundle of Castlevania games.
@BanjoPickles wasnt that more the fact that Sony had a hand in sotn tho? Even so your point still stands. I don't understand why N would add these characters to their own mainline brawler without deals being done in the background.
@Rika_Yoshitake But that would defeat the purpose of it being clickbait, and would give Liam nothing to write about!
@BanjoPickles Sure, That would be like Starlink or Valky4 for me.
But at the same time, I found time to play P5 at home already. Just like I'll play KH3 at home and play something else on the GO.
Well, darn. I suppose maybe it's like when Cloud was added to SSB4. The endgame of that addition was years out (with FFVII and many mainline FFs coming to a Nintendo system for the very first time next year).
It could be that they hope to snag some mainline Persona games (even if they're old ones) years down the line.
And hey, it could still happen with this Persona 5 release... But I think news sites like this need to stop acting like it's inevitable and that any news/rumors about P5R automatically has anything to do with Nintendo.
@Malcrash Shh, don't give SegAtlus any ideas!
@ClassSonicSatAm If you only care about Spiderman - why are you reading an article about P5 could be coming to Switch.
Most people do not buy a PS4 (or a Switch) for Crash Team Racing.
@Preposterous Huh?... someone who buys a console in 2019 to finally play Nier, P5 and Nioh. Is the same as someone who buys a console in 2019 to finally play ZBOTW and Kingdom battle.
No idea what "to play 3 games" means. You get access to the entire back library
This teaser for a teaser didn't really show us anything, might as well show us the real teaser in March!
@Agramonte I'm just refering to the "Just get a PS4 and you have no need to keep hoping/begging you can play -all the great games on it-" part. But I would find it odd if someone told me they're buying a Switch right now for BoTW and Kingdom battle (I own only one of those and it's not Zelda).
@illmatic20xx yep not everyone can have both. I mean, anyone who skips 3 or 4 $60 rehash old games on Switch could have already saved up for one.
Yep... DQ11 blows it away - great game (played it on PC - hopefully will do well on Switch). I cant stand retro-ish jRPGs at this point, so Octopath was not for me.
There are rumors of an early January direct coming around 1/10. If there is any Switch announcement, i would expect it here. There is a lot that is a total secret right now: online service NES lineup for 2019/additional systems added, solid release dates for a number of 2019 games, updates on ports like the FF games and Dragon Quest 11, etc.
The hype train is entering the station soon...
@Preposterous Not sure why it be odd. ZBOTW is still in the UK top 10 Switch list every week. And can be found at a great price.
P5 and ZBOTW came out in the same time frame in 2017.
@Agramonte
Absolutely. It’s the reason why I’ve been a multi console owner since Nintendo was forced to stop their monopolistic practices; I gravitated towards Super Nintendo, but I knew that games like Toejam and Earl, Gunstar Heroes, Road Rash, Streets of Rage, and Comix Zone would never be released for it, so I asked for a Genesis for Christmas of ‘93. I was a PlayStation 1 fan, but it wasn’t going to get Mario64, Mario Kart, or Panzer Dragoon so I ponied up the dough for a Saturn and N64. I only had a Dreamcast and GameCube the following generation because they had most of the games I wanted, but I missed out on a ton of great PS2/Xbox games.
Simply put, being a multi-console owner is absolute freedom. It’s not for everyone (obviously), but I love it!
@NIN10DOXD if it comes to switch then awesome but next year is alrdy jam packed with games for switch.
@Kidfunkadelic83
Yep. It wouldn’t have happened without Sony’s involvement. Honestly, I would rather see rereleases of the GBA/DS trilogies anyway.
@BanjoPickles "being a multi-console owner is absolute freedom"
yep! Done PS+Nin combo since the GameCube. Now that they not in the same launch schedule makes it easier. Also, love it.
@DoctorOverbuild Joker was in the Persona on 3DS its not like Joker is exclusive to PS5
@Knuckles-Fajita
Perhaps Cloud would have been a better choice for the point you were trying to make? I don't think he has ever been on a Nintendo system except for small Cameos in spinoff games.
Though in 2019 it looks like we will be able to play his game on the Switch so maybe dreams do come true.
It's not coming to the Switch. Accept it.
@Agramonte
Same here. I bought a Wii at launch, and even though I loved it, I knew that it would never get Resident Evil 5, or Uncharted, Arkham Asylum, Bioshock, or so many others so I waited until PS3 was reduced to $400. The combo gave me everything that I could have possibly wanted. I’ll never be a single console owner because my tastes are too varied for any one company to cater to them.
@Knuckles-Fajita All of Simon's Games were Nintendo Games first, with Catlevania (I) later being ported or remade for other consoles.
As other people already mentioned, all the other characters you listed had outings on a Nintendo console.
I’m getting this regardless of system
This doesn't really deconfirm the Switch version though.. P5R could be PS4 and Switch. Also, the Switch version announcement could be held for a Nintendo Direct. I remember the last time people said there's no chance for a Switch version(Doom Eternal).
I think it’s coming to Switch.
If it doesn’t, then it doesn’t. But we’ve seen Sony flashing their logo on everything that’s multiplat. I do think Switch is getting a port.
I figure if it’s going to be announced for Switch, it’ll be before the time Joker releases. And I fully expect Nintendo to be the one announcing it.
There’s no real reason to re-purchase this game on PS4... I already own it on PS4. Now, a Switch version... that I would buy. But if it’s not on switch this really isn’t that interesting. Just a game of the year edition for an already released game.
I won't be suprised if this is the equivalent to Persona 4 Golden, it seems to be that sort of thing anyway. And I'm fine with that because P4G was a huge improvement in my opinion. Whether it will come to the Switch, I'd expect it to but I won't be heartbroken if it doesn't happen, however it would definitely sell and it would help Atlus make an audience for SMT V outside of Japan.
Fingers crossed that it happens to be on Switch! 🤞
@Agramonte Wanting a game to come to your choice of platform isn't crazy though. Not everyone wants to keep buying different devices to play games.
@Quarth Considering how many people expected today’s announcements to include a Switch port, it would have been very odd for Nintendo Life to not mention it.
This nerds to be on a portables device. I own the game but playing on a TV is just weird.
The idea of this coming to Switch is still 100% speculation. Appearing in Smash means nothing at this point. Yes, Nintendo is picking who they want in this game... and Persona is popular. Putting Joker in this generates buzz and gets Persona 5 fans looking at Switch. Those fans don’t care if the game is released on Switch as they already have a PS4. It still could potentially come to Switch but it is not even close to confirmed. But of course people like to read into every little thing... there are plenty of possible reasons for including Joker, Persona 5 coming to Switch is hardly the only outcome.
@imgrowinglegs I don’t know. I was hoping for some real Switch related news regarding this and got tricked into thinking something exciting had been revealed. What irritates me is the ”clickbaitiness” of the headline (though the subheading clarifies it... somewhat). There has been a couple of articles like this during the year, with promising headlines, but with no real weight to them. But the fault might be mine for not properly reading the subheading before clicking on the link.
But if people wants to read about pure speculation like this, it’s fine.
Considering the Vita is pretty much dead at this point, I'd be surprised if it wasn't a dual release on PS4 and Switch at this point.
R? Like in PS VR?
(5=V.)
Persona 5 Racing is gonna be great!
I be shocked if this is day and date on switch. I reckon the smart money is on a timed exclusive for Sony. I hate timed exclusive games.
I admit it was disappointing to see only the PS logo at the beginning of the teaser after watching the anime last night, but I’m not sure that alone means that a Switch version isn’t coming at all (just like Joker in Smash doesn’t confirm that it is coming either).
I think that releasing P5 on the Switch makes a lot of sense and I also think that Nintendo will want to announce it themselves, so I’ll keep my hopes in check until January’s Direct. If we don’t get anything then, then I’ll forget about P5 for the time being (and will reduce the appealing of getting Joker for Smash quite a lot too...)
I really need a portable version of Persona 5, as I can't stand over long session jRPGs on TV. But I don't care what it'll be for, Vita or Switch, though the latter is better due to superior screen size.
Loving this Nintendo coverage NL
I miss the ATLUS from the ds era where they were pumping out quality after quality. Give us Etrian Odyssey on switch!
I am pretty sure that the only way people will be willing to spend money for this game if and only if it came out on Playstation 3/4 is that the content would be a whole lot different besides the graphics because I noticed that the content looks like the old content from the original game. Otherwise I guess you would say goodbye to the money for a similar game play content with just new graphics as the only obvious change. I am not opposed to the idea of putting the game on the Playstation system only, but do remember that the Nintendo Switch is newer than the Playstation System. I think it would be a smart thing to do if they put it out on another system as Persona Q and Q2 are released on Nintendo 3DS and not on Playstation consoles and they are created by Atlus. Otherwise, they wouldn't exist. I believe that the Persona creators deserve the love and credit no matter what system they put their games on.
I have a suggestion though that I will post here out of pure coincidence. Why not put it on both systems if people are eager to put it only on Playstation 3/4 (and some people who wanted the game ported to the Switch - make it compatible) and call it a day rather than fight it out on one system or the other? I am trying to suggest this on equal terms so that everyone would be satisfied with the choice. If the game is a Playstation 4 exclusive only, it would anger Switch people who want the game, but at the same time if the game debuts only to the Switch console, it would anger the Playstation 3/4 fans who want the game only on that system.
Now if Persona 5 R is Playstation 4 exclusive, Persona 5 S should be Switch exclusive in order to avoid tension.
wow nintendolife reporting on an (as of now) PS4 only game while pushsquare didn't mention joker coming to smash ONCE.
Persona 5 Racing: Mementos Drift
Yeah yeah, leave your hopes in 2018, it's the last chance.
@Agramonte If you only care about Sony/PlayStation then why are you on a Nintendo site? two people can play this game. ;p
also the reason I even got a PS1 was for it's Crash games same with the PSP, playing Crash Team Racing on the go was better then Mario Kart DS due to it's adventure mode, and the remake looks like it's going to be even better
@ClassSonicSatAm Because I do not care just about Sony/Playstation. I care about videogames
Sometimes those games are on a console made by Nintendo, sometimes by SONY. I could care less, as long as I am guaranteed to play it.
I never played Crash on PS1. And more excited about Dirt 2.0 on PS4 and GRID on Switch than Crash Racing.
@HollowGrapeJ I do not see 2 devices as a lot. But, sure - that is a choice
Persona 4 was in 2008, so when P5 came out in 2017 - I had waited 8 years for a new main line Persona. So "My console of choice" for that month was whatever could play P5.
"console of choice" changes with what is out on a given month.
Persona 5 coming to the Switch would be great, but more than that I'd like it to be available on PC.
@Agramonte Another device is still money you could actually be putting towards games on something you already own.
@HollowGrapeJ Sure, but with that mentality nobody would buy a Switch to play Smash and just get a game on something they already have.
Skipping a few $60 rehash or mediocre games on something "I already own" you can save and get access to EVERYTHING.
ZBOTW and Persona 5... Smash and Kingdom Hearts 3. No begging no waiting. 😏
