Atlus has revealed that Etrian Odyssey Nexus - known as Etrian Odyssey X in Japan - will be heading westward in February next year.
The game was released in Japan on 2nd August, acting as the final game of the series on Nintendo 3DS. Atlus has already teased future titles - seemingly coming to Switch - but it's great to see this final hoorah for the series on Nintendo's little 3D wonder. The game will be available on 5th February and pre-orders are said to be live right now (although, at the time of writing, Atlas' link isn't working correctly).
FEATURES:
- The Definitive Etrian Odyssey Experience - With more classes, characters, gameplay systems, and labyrinths than any other game in the series, Etrian Odyssey Nexus is the ultimate dungeon-crawling adventure.
- Customise Your Perfect Exploration Party - Create and customize characters from 19 playable classes, then take on the dangerous creatures of Lemuria's labyrinths with your perfect party!
- Both Newcomers and Veterans Welcome! - With the ability to swap between four distinct difficulty settings, auto-mapping settings, and a grand standalone story, there's something for everyone from series newcomers to experienced veterans.
- A Love Letter to Etrian - Longtime series mainstays Yuji Himukai (Character Designer), Shin Nagasawa (Monster Designer), and Yuzo Koshiro (Composer) have come together to create the preeminent Etrian experience for the series' final installment on the Nintendo 3DS.
With several months sitting between now and release, we're confident that we'll hear much more about this title and what we can expect to find in the game. If it's anything like its predecessors, though, including the magnificent Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth that arrived in the west last year, we're very hopeful for another success story here.
Are you a fan of the series? Are you glad to see this game make it to the west on 3DS? As ever, share your thoughts with us below.

Should've known it would be February! I like the nice quick turnaround for the west from Atlus. Capcom with the Monster Hunter series could learn a few things.
Oh and I'm good with the name change. Probably done so it doesn't confuse us dumb westerners. 😛
I have never played any of these games but I'm tempted to start picking some of them up as I've heard its a solid series.
For someone who hasn’t played Etrian Odyssey before, which game is good to start with?
Will get it for sure because I still play a lot on my 3DS, Vita and Switch.
Next one is on the Switch they said, I wonder how they fix the whole gameplay that relies heavly on second screen.
EONexus and PQ2 might be the last games of my 3DS... next year...
At this point I can call my 3DS an Atlus Portable Console lol
@JoakimZ Hey! Etrian Odyssey vet here. The games share most of their gameplay, so you an really start with any one of the 3DS games. I would recommend either Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl (a remake of the original game) or Etrian Odyssey IV (which has a unique and very cool overworld system), since those are my favorites
EDIT: Argh, beaten to the punch by Tops! Although as you can see, between us, we recommended every single game on the 3DS So yeah just start wherever you want, they're all great.
Got confirmation West means Europe too: https://twitter.com/More_Synergy/status/1029734961488642049
@JoakimZ EO4
@JoakimZ I started with Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan. They're all stand-alones from what I recall, some very vague references to other characters or a slight nod but for the most part you can just jump in and adventure. Be aware these are old-style rpg games where you are tasked with creating your map, marking out bosses, etc. It's not everyone's cup of tea but it satisfies a certain itch for certain people. IV is a few years older now, you can probably find it pretty cheap and used. Happy hunting!
Nicely handled.
"ekkusu" and "nexus" don't sound that far apart, and in the West putting an X at the end of a title has a kitsch value to it that I would imagine does more bad than good nowadays.
@JoakimZ I'd recommend EOV (which I believe is also on sale in NA at the moment). It strips out a lot of the extraneous stuff that slowed down IV. It'll give you the best idea of what the series is all about and has some really cool classes, but it's not like the others will be unplayable by comparison - just different.
That said, you might consider one of the Untold games if you're concerned about getting invested in an RPG that has silent player-characters and very little plot. They have the option to have a greater focus on pre-written characters.
And if you've played Persona 3 or 4, Persona Q is the easy choice. It's the most polished and has the best puzzles IMO, but don't know how interesting it would be for someone who didn't know the characters.
Typically a game that I would like to have on Switch...but no, 3DS...
@turntSNACO @sonicbooming @TeslaChippie @Tops Thanks for your replies. It’s mostly the map making and dungeon crawling that I’m interrested in, and I generally want as little plot/reading as possible. So I guess I should go for one of the non-Untold games then, if the Untold games has more story to them?
@Cobalt I actually have no idea how they're going to do Etrian Odyssey on Switch. It seems to me that having to go to a separate menu and use buttons to draw the map instead of just using the lower touch screen on the 3DS is going to be extremely tedious.
@JoakimZ Correct, EO4 and EO5 are lighter story-wise. Also, if the map-making attracts you, don't hesitate to check out Persona Q, which is a Persona / Etrian Odyssey crossover
EDIT: Although Persona Q is much more story heavy than ANY of the EO games
For anyone groaning at the lack of an Etrian Odyssey for the Switch, I'm with you. But keep in mind, we have Disgaea 5. It's one of the most nuanced and deep JRPGs available. Slightly different but worth checking out if you have a JRPG itch that you need to scratch.
Nice to see a quick localization announcement and release window after the endless waiting for news on EOV.
I guess I know what I'm picking up in February!
@JoakimZ Yes. To be more specific about IV/V, IV has overworld map sections where you pilot an airship to get between different labyrinths and pick up food/interact with other airships/solve environmental puzzles to get places.
V just has one extended labyrinth that you continually chip away it. The environment changes every 5 floors, so it's still diverse and interesting, and all the side quests take place on one of these floors rather than in stand-alone dungeons. The advantage is that the loop in V is just 'explore dungeon -> manage items and quests in town -> repeat'. You can automatically return to any floor you've fully explored in the past, so no time is spent on going from place to place.
I’m absolutely buying this. I haven’t bought every Etrian odyssey but I do own a few. I’m thinking this might be the last on the system so I’m down. I’m due for another trip through Ygrassil... I spelled that right, right?
@JoakimZ my advice: Do not start with the Etrian Odyssey: Untold series. None of the later, original-to-3DS Etrian games have the story-focus and character development of the Untold games, and that's always a let-down for me when I take a chance on the newer games with an overworld.
Already got this preordered. Can’t wait to dive into this new game next year.
Cool, I really enjoyed V, so I'll be getting this.
@Cobalt don't worry the next EO installments will be on the Switch, that's for sure
Awesome!!! Alliance Alive in 2017 and now Etrian.
Kingdom Heart at home and Etrian Odyssey on the go would be amazing - 🙂
These news made my day. Thank you, Atlus, I can always trust you.
What's a 3DS
For fans like myself looking for an early review of the Japanese version of the game, take a look: https://www.frontlinejp.net/2018/08/13/review-etrian-odyssey-x-sekaiju-no-meikyuu-x/
Nexus is apparently a remix of all of the previous games, with classes from each one, dungeons from each of them plus new ones, an overworld, and subclasses returning. I'm pretty excited about the mix of new and old! Truly a fitting send-off for the 3DS.
I think one of the more intriguing aspects of Nexus will be its inclusions of remastered EO3 dungeons and music. This is of particular interest to fans of the DS entry, as it's the only game of the first 3 that wasn't given a 3DS remake (that it was skipped may honestly be due in part to the fact that EO3 is already considered to be the best of the original DS games - although somewhat clunkier than the 3DS sequels/remakes, I think it actually still holds up pretty well).
It's too bad that 3 won't be getting a standalone makeover but at least we can now get a taste of what could have been.
Excellent. I expected this was coming but relieved to have it confirmed. A definite pre-order for me, although I wonder how good the class balance will be in this one.
@wratih9 start with picking one up, not some. see how you like it first. it's not for everybody and they are not short games.
Regarding Atlas' commitment to keep the series going, I think that probably means one of two things:
1) It's heading to the Switch. If so, the game may end up having the emulate a dual screen set-up. In handheld mode, maybe have the left side of the screen being more than halfway filled with the main game, and the right third of the screen consisting of a map that uses the touch screen. How this would work in docked mode, I have no idea. I'm sure they'll think of something. Who knows!
2) It's a hint that Nintendo is developing an as of yet unannounced dedicated dual screen handheld on the DS/3DS family of systems, and that Atlas (being an important, long time third party handheld publisher for Nintendo) has been given advanced knowledge of it. Maybe even an early working kit.
I kind of hope that Nintendo isn't making a new DS (not right now anyway, maybe towards the latter end of the Switch's lifespan) - but, I'd be open to it. After all, certain games like Etrian Odyssey - designed to be played on two screens - will probably never play as well on a system without a dual screen. Which is why it blows my mind that EO never came to the Wii U. It would have been a nice fit.
I like how Atlus keeps supporting older platforms longer than most publishers, they did the same with Persona 4 (PS2) and Persona 5 (PS3). Sometimes it pays off since you don't have much competition and have a huge install base looking for new releases. Now that PQ2 localization is looking more likely to happen...
I hope they make a limited edition like previous games.
I'm in the middle of EO IV just now and it's brutally difficult. I quite like the combat and the exploring though so I'll persevere. It's harder for me than early game SMT IV so I've probably made a fatal error.
Atlus has been rather quiet in general lately. Interesting that they are seeming to come out of their cocoon, hopefully full force.
This would be great except I haven't used my 3DS since I got my Switch.
i would ask if its coming to europe but even when it does come to europe they only make like 1 copy so its impossible to buy
Oh, but squareenix refuses to localize DQ11.
3DS? What's that?
@JoakimZ - IV and V are both excellent, with the latter probably the best in the series. As others have said, IV has an overworld, which I feel takes away more than it adds. They are both very easy to recommend though.
You'd certainly get your money's worth with Untold 1 and 2 as well, although I personally prefer the DS originals. The remakes are easier to play, with conveniences like Floor Jump (zoom to any staircase you've used) but they've also been rebalanced. A system called Grimoire Stones was introduced, which I feel overcomplicates things and makes you rely on very rare and random drops. With the post-game bosses given more HP, they are even more frustrating than in the originals, which did at least give you a way to beat them. In Untold, it feels like they expect you to collect the best Grimoire Stones.
@JoakimZ I’ve only played Persona Q but I’ve read plenty of reviews for the games, so you can take or leave this comment. Most reviews claim that Untold 2 and IV are the best places to start with the series, with the former improving on Untold 1 in every way, and the latter being more welcoming to beginners by breaking the dungeon into sections instead of one long dungeon to slog through like V returned to. Again, can’t confirm myself, but yeah, Untold 2 and IV are the most recommended.
I wish I could appreciate Etrian’s gameplay cause Atlus just can’t stop churning these games out -and this one in particular looks like quite the decent deal. The fact that I needed the automap feature on Persona Q (and Q2 soon) tells me all I needed to know though, so this sadly may not be for me.
@TeslaChippie There's a reason why I think most people will be playing this game in portable mode. If they include a single button press to pull up the map, like how it is in Hollow Knight, alongside touch controls, it shouldn't be too bad, right?
@Tops Are you not going to get Persona Q2?
@JoakimZ Definitely IV. That has the best music! I thought nothing could top Storm but then I heard Faith is My Pillar X)
I am looking forward to this!
Collection to Switch
Day one buy, hopefully they bring Persona Q2: Cinema Labyrinth too
This game is so awesome 😍
"acting as the final game of the series on Nintendo 3DS" so you mean a developer is moving a franchise from the 3DS to the Switch like Game Freak, Atlus, Level 5, Square and others? But you fanboys say that Switch isn't the successor for 3DS, yet all these developers continue to say they're moving from 3DS to Switch. Rather interesting that a system that's not supposed to be the successor has had numerous developers say they're moving to it from the previous system. Hmmmmm...
Look fanboys, whether you want to admit it or not the Switch IS the 3DS's successor, Pokemon moving proves it! The Switch WILL get a smaller/cheaper remake and THAT will be the thing that officially is Nintendo's way of saying they've made the Switch the 3DS's successor.
