Re: Rumour: Another 2D Metroid Has Begun Development

the101

Regardless of rumors, 2D Metroid will certainly return. I just hope they surprise us with an original game that takes the concepts of Super Metroid and expands upon them in a true sequel (as oppose to a Super Metroid remake, which is honestly the more likely option).

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Ubisoft's Nintendo Switch Reveals at E3 2017?

the101

@LeRaposa Ubisoft has reason to be cautious. They truly did try to support the Wii U for awhile, but it didn't live up to their expectations (in terms of their software sales). The Switch isn't even a year old yet. 3rd parties are expected to be skeptical at this point. At the time, the Switch will not suffer its first year without 3rd party support. So many games are coming to the system directly from Nintendo this first year. It's as if they KNEW 3rd party developers wouldn't adopt their hardware so early after the failures of the Wii U.

Patience is important during this period. Mario + Rabbids is Ubisoft getting their toe wet before diving in for the long term. I say let them.

Re: Poll: Did the ARMS Global Testpunch Land a Knockout Blow?

the101

@Rhaoulos I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the Testpunch. There is a little bit of a learning curve with it's mechanics. I think controls may have felt unresponsive to you because they are very sensitive to the Joy-cons positioning.

I will say it's actually not based on luck though: everything is interrelated and balanced. You're chances of hitting your opponent is dependent on how you move the Joy-cons, as that determines whether you throw a straight punch or curve inward or behind your opponent.

Re: Final Starter Evolutions, Gen I Treats and Region Guardians Unveiled for Pokémon Sun and Moon

the101

@Xaessya seeing Cynthia, Wally, Red, and Blue again was actually the highlight for me. I don't know if you played this one Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, but one of my favorite inclusions was something called the Pokémon World Championship. It was a competition between you and every Gym Leader and Champion from the other regions. It was so nostalgic, and it really solidified the idea that this is a unified world that follow chronologically, not just isolated experiences. I can't speak for anyone else, but it makes the games more meaningful to me.

Re: Italian Bishop Likens Pokémon GO To Nazism, Claims It Turns Players Into "Walking Dead"

the101

@InternetBowser I realize that your comment was solely in jest, and I in no way want to start a religion-based debate on a Nintendo site, but to imply religion consists of people blindly following It's guidelines as if zombies is not accurate and insensitive to people's own respective faiths.

The majority of people, regardless of belief, are right-minded individuals and just generally pretty normal people who do indeed think for themselves, or at least that's my experience. People like Antonio Stagliano are part of a vocal but small percentage.

Re: Poll: How Excited Are You About Pokémon Sun and Moon?

the101

@MitchVogel out of curiosity, what is it you disliked? I liked Mega Evolution too, as well as things like Pokémon Amie, the new Pokémon, music, and some of the region's layout. I thought the online components a lot, how the Exp. All removed tedious grinding, and the Pokémon Bank.

I felt like the story was very poorly done though, especially after Black and White. The villainous grunts were really unexciting. The champion made little impact on the player, as well as your rivaling friends, most of the gym leaders, or AZ. There are other things I miss or wish was included, but they're mostly just nitpicks than actual problems (like the exclusion of any real haunted house).

Re: Talking Point: SEGA Has the Right Idea With Its Upcoming Sonic Projects

the101

@Dakt I realize this varies a lot for people, but I personally didn't care too much for Sonic Lost World. It's story was uninteresting, the Deadly Six were uninspired inclusions to Sonic's canon, and the humor was poor. As another uncommon opinion, I did not like Lost World's visuals all that much. It reminded me of Sonic Heroes' style, which felt overly saturated and bright. The colorful but defined visuals of Sonic Unleashed, Colors, and Generations are more my cup of tea.

All of this would be forgivable if Sonic Lost World had good, fully fleshed out mechanics, but it doesn't. Having a kick attack felt unnecesarry. Parkouring was either always too responsive or unresponsive. Needing a run button felt alien. The whole fish-eye, planetary body-like levels was disorienting and only reminded me that I want open space in a Sonic game to let me just run. I don't hate the game, and I don't even think it's a bad game. I just think it's flawed. It lacks a fluidity achieved with its prodecessors.

I personally really liked the gameplay style of Unleashed, Colors, and Generations. Boosting was fun and responding to upcoming obstacles felt smooth. It wasn't perfect, but if Sonic Team was able to combine that gameplay and make it easier to control Sonic free-roaming (as in, without boosting) like in Adventure, Adventure 2, and Lost World (without any of those games' awakened camera angles), this could be potentially very good. I just don't know at this point.

Sure, they advertise the "makers of Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations", but keep in mind there are two slightly different divisions under the name "Sonic Team", and the specific division that made Colors did not also make Generations. The team that made Colors (called "Team B") also made Lost World and Sonic Runners. "Team A" - the team making this 2017 title - did make Generations, as well as Unleashed. From what I know of Sonic Team-made projects, the new installment will probably be derivative of the mechanics of the last game, regardless of the division who made it (in other words, Sonic Lost World). I just hope they've used the long development time to fix the problems I mentioned.

Re: Project Sonic 2017 Confirmed for Nintendo NX Release

the101

@SigourneyBeaver It actually may be a premise where Dr. Eggman finally wins. It may seem pretty over-the-top at first glance, but it's not like those were giant monsters or demons destroying the city. They looked like Eggman's giant mechs. They even had triangular yellow plates under their heads like the EggRobo enemy from Sonic & Knuckles. That's a pretty cartoonish design. Maybe Classic Sonic's involvement comes from an attempt to go back and prevent whatever happened that allowed Eggman to win, an event that was too big for just one Sonic to handle, but this is something we'll have to wait for to understand.

I'm still primarily concerned with how the game will play. Sure, one can be hopeful that they say "from the makers of Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations", but keep in mind those were the two most recent Sonic Team-developed titles that got universally positive scores. Sonic Lost World and Sonic Unleashed were mixed. It's like how the DVD release of The Princess and the Frog says "from the stuido that brought you Aladdin and The Lion King", not "Home on the Range and Chicken Little".

Re: Project Sonic 2017 Confirmed for Nintendo NX Release

the101

I must be honest, even if I'm the only one here feeling it, but I'm not overly hyped for this new Sonic title. I'm looking forward to it, sure, and that fact that it'll be coming to NX as well as Xbox One and PS4 is promising, but the concept just isn't hitting me. It's Classic Sonic, really. If they showed another character... Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, even Silver, I would've gotten pretty excited. But the value of having Classic Sonic return feels a lot less exciting after having brought him back for Sonic Generations and with Sonic Mania on the horizon. I know it's an assumption, but my gut feeling is that they brought him back solely as a gimmick, really. If you're not going to treat this as a sequel for Sonic Generations, why bring him back at all? It's not like it's necessary. Sonic Mania looks like it's going to be closer to what we recognize as "classic" better than Generations ever did (which is saying something, because I actually feel like they did a great job).

This is especially problematic for my personal tastes because I want them to expand and evolve the gameplay of our comtemporary hedgehog. I know it was a very brief showing, but to me it looks like Sonic will have a Lost World-inspired play style. I sincerely hope they have fine-tuned Sonic's mechanics, because I felt Lost World had some very serious flaws with how it played. Parkouring was unnecessarily awkward, a walk button felt alien, actually running was slow, and it just didn't feel fluid. I sincerely hope these problems are given the attention they need. I admit that it did seem that there were some mechanics of Sonic's modern hay day returning (Unleashed, Colors & Generations) like boosting (sort of?) and sliding, but it's still not entirely clear to me. It's just a teaser afterall. But hey, I don't see a single hexagonal platform or angry Zeti in sight, which is a good sign to me. I just hope this thing falls together well in a way that makes sense.

Re: Hyper Training, Six New Pokémon and More Announced for Sun and Moon

the101

@Seacliff if anything that individual equid is about 5'05" at the shoulders. That's still not quite 8'00", even in accounting for the additional height from its shouldr blade to the tip of its ears. I never said horses couldn't be big - they're certainly large animals - but Mudsdale is is heavy as Groudon - a volcanic dinosaurian beast - and as tall as Mamoswine - a giant woolly mammoth-inspired boar. The elephant Pokémon Donphan is only 3'07" for crying out loud. It's just kinda weird. Sorry if I'm the only one.

Re: Hyper Training, Six New Pokémon and More Announced for Sun and Moon

the101

(I hope you don't read this in a snarky tone.) @Tempestryke I'm well acquainted with the size of horses. I'm actually a veteraned horse rider. Mudsdale's size just stood out to me as wonderfully bizarre because beyond being coated with mud, it's basically just a horse. It just so happens to be as heavy as Groudon. This makes it a bit more reminiscent of the Trojan Horse, but the motif is nowhere else in its design. Why so big?

It doesn't bother me. In fact, Mudsdale's design is my favorite of the new bunch (though, I think it's a pretty solid lineup all around). I just reflect on how Pokémon sizes rarely make any sense. I'm not of any remarkable height, but I still tower over Charizard. Wailord may be big, but its weight distribution is so off it essentially can float in the air. Rapidash is the size of an average mustang, but Mudsdale is as big as Mamoswine, a Pokémon based off of a freakin' woolly mammoth.

Re: Project Sonic 2017 Confirmed for Nintendo NX Release

the101

@AlexSora89 while it does feature the return of Classic Sonic, and I presume both Blue Blurs will be playable, this was very specifically said to not be a sequel. So it is not Generations 2, Adventure 3, etc. But that makes the premise all the more confusing.

Re: Project Sonic 2017 Confirmed for Nintendo NX Release

the101

@Raylax I'm glad someone else made that conclusion. Personally, I feel pretty happy about all we're getting!

And as a continuation of Colors and Generations, it does sort of look like Modern Sonic boosted a bit, which he wasn't able to do in Lost World. I hope that returns.

Also, not a hexagonal platform or angry Zeti in sight. Thank goodness.

Re: Pokémon GO Success Causes Nintendo Share Price To Surge, But Teething Troubles Frustrate

the101

I think the servers for Pokémon Go are only overwhelmed so much because... well, it's an online-dependent Pokémon experience. The launch of Pokémon Bank had many issues, including overwhelmed servers. The eShop was down completely at its launch, leading to Bank's temporary removal from the eShop and a significant delay in North America. I don't attribute the server problems to the game, Niantic, or Nintendo, but the simple appeal of the Pokémon brand.

Re: Shadow The Hedgehog

the101

Even without a review, I can't believe Shadow the Hedgehog has its own cover artwork and box art, while Sonic Adventure DX and even Sonic Heroes do not.

Re: Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut

the101

@readyletsgo I'd at least like to see Nintendo Life give it cover artwork and its box art. It seems so hallow without it.

And yes, I think the game is great, if not just as comparable to the Sega Dreamcast's Sonic Adventure.

Re: Review: Mighty No. 9 (Wii U)

the101

@Broosh I honestly agree with you. While I myself haven't picked up the game, I don't think Mighty No. 9 is as terrible as some may imply. Just underwhelming. The controversies around it are what hinder its general consensus.

Re: Review: Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Wii U)

the101

@Tendogamerxxx I don't know. I've been fairly happy with Sega, and the Sonic series in particular. I thoroughly enjoyed Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations, which weren't published really all that long ago (2010 and 2011, respectively). Their subsidiary Atlus hasn't really disappointed anyone, I don't think, and they have pretty consistent releases. I agree that they aren't quite as varied and consistent as a publisher as they use to be, but I'm personally not all that angry or disappointed.
