Re: Nintendo Will Remove Smash Bros. Ultimate's Offensive Depiction Of Native Americans

@DTFaux When you look at Jinx's Pokedex descriptions they all reference dance, combined that with her ice type it fits well into the idea that her inspiration was Yama-uba.
Cultural clash would probably be a better way to describe it, but I was trying to point out the fact that only looking through your own cultural lens and not through others is inherently racist. It's basically saying that your culture is the one that is worth looking through (hence superior) to another's.

@Tilde I agree with you there is no short answer to this issues; the issues themselves are long and complicated. My comment was in response to nofriendo asking why people don't understand what racism is. When you look at his stereotypical design it doesn't seem as offensive, and it isn't racist, By Itself. It's only when you look back at the larger picture that you see the racism underlying it all.

@nocdaes I think many people are tired from hearing about people being offended by seemingly unsubstantial issues. Also a lot of this censorship is used to cover up the fact that racism existed not to actually address the issues.

Mr. Game & Watch is a bad example because this costume is based on a stereotypic depiction of Native Americans. Which these depictions are considered by Native Americans to be offensive. It's not Mr. G&W, it's that this design is a part of a bigger problem. People that aren't aware of this see it as another issue of people complaining over nothing.

A better example of example of people complaining over nothing, would be Mario wearing a Mexican sombero and poncho in Odyssey. Some people were creating problems about this claiming that it was racist, cultural misappropriation, etc. When in reality it wasn't portraiting Mexicans in a negative light; it was a simply reference to another culture.

@nofriendo From Wikipedia, "Racism is the belief in the superiority of one race over another, which often results in discrimination and prejudice towards people based on their race or ethnicity".

What most people don't see is how this design of Mr. Game & Watch is showing that another group is superior to Native Americans?
This seems very similar to when some people complained that having Mario wear a Mexican sombero and poncho in Odyssey was offense to Mexican people. It isn't portraiting Mexicans in a
negative light; it's referencing and trying to pay homage to another culture.

I understand that this version of Mr. GnW's design was based on a stereotypic depiction of Native Americans, and why someone could find this offensive. But censoring older works like this is often used by certain groups to cover up/ignore the fact the racism existed in the past, and to hide the ebbs of racism that currently lies in the system.

Re: Oculus VR Chief Technology Officer Identifies Nintendo Switch As Market Competitor

@WaveBoy I'm not sure whether VR will take over the main stream.

I only played a few PSVR games for a short time at a friend's house. And while I had fun it wasn't something I felt like I needed to play again.

I feel like many new trends in gaming start off as gimics. Taking the 3DS for example the early games that used the 3D effect was cool when it worked, but it was so unstable that I rarely used it. It wasn't until the New 3DS came out with the Super Stable 3D that you could play the games with 3D left on.

But even then it never felt like any of these games needed 3D. Yes it enhanced these games, but it never felt like it needed to be there. And now Nintendo gave up on including the 3D effect on the new 3DS games.

VR right now is a gimmick. It needs many things including time, improved technology and new ideas in game design; before it will start to be considered in the main stream.

It has potential to become the next big thing in gaming. Remember that there was a time when people thought all games were going to have motion controls, only for it to mostly die off during the next console generation.

Re: Oculus VR Chief Technology Officer Identifies Nintendo Switch As Market Competitor

@WaveBoy Take a chill pill bro. You sound as closed minded as the people you are complaining about.

Different people like different experiences. Let everyone enjoy what they like.

VR does have a lot of potential and can be very imersive. But right know it requires a lot of prep work and the technology is limited right now. As it improves it will slowly start to form it's own niche, and is already on it's way to do so.

Whether it takes over the main stream or stays a niche thing; only time will tell.

Re: Talking Point: Do We Still Need Review Scores?

stache13

I can see both sides of the argument. While I do confess that I tend to skip to the bottom check the score and read the conclusion before I decide wether reading the full review is worth my time. It is nice to have a simple way to score and compare games. That said the score is not the end all be all.

Personally I do like some of the alternative review scores give my The Completionist (Complete it, Finish it, Play it, Look at it, or Burn it) or GameXplain (Love, Like, meh, dislike, or hate). These tend to summarize the reviewers opinion of the game more clearly than a number would.

Re: Super Mario Party On Switch Won't Include Pro Controller Support

stache13

@Razer your arguments make no sense.
Most games support the pro controller. If the game uses a more traditional control scheme then the developer would be foolish to limit the options the player will have.

Mario Party, and 1-2-Switch both don't support the pro controller and both use a non-traditional control scheme that is designed around the joy-cons. For these games, limiting the controllers to joy-cons only makes sense.

For further proof, look at Arm's. This game was designed around using the montion controls of the joy-cons to play the game. But being the "anti-consumer" company that they are they decided to include a way to play on the joy-cons with a traditional control scheme and support for the pro controller as well.

Nintendo makes decisions for each game based on what will work best for each individual game.

Re: Nintendo Explains How Exactly You Can Play Xenoblade Chronicle 2’s Prequel Story

stache13

@rjejr I used your same logic to justify buying the expansion pass as a physical edition. Since it is only $2 more to buy the physical edition (with prime discount) vs digital version. But I also have terrible internet where I live, slow and constantly cuts in and out. So any large download is all but impossible for me.

I would recommend starting with the original Xenoblade 2 then move on to the prequel story. If you play the prequel first it will ruin several surprises for you. But it's up to you.
