The glory days of GoldenEye 007 appear to be a thing of the past on all fronts - with the 2007 Xbox Live Arcade remake of Rare's iconic Nintendo 64 shooter seemingly stuck in licensing Hell.
While we likely won't ever get our hands on the game via an official release, as of today, we can at least get a better idea about what could have been. Following on from a half-hour video of the Xbox 360 build back in 2016, YouTuber Graslu00 has now uploaded a "longplay" of the remake.
It features the "full game on 00 Agent" (including the bonus levels) in 4K and running at a smooth 60 FPS - along with an additional half-hour of multiplayer.
This particular build is via a PC emulator to achieve a higher resolution. In a separate FAQ on the same YouTube page, it's mentioned how the game files will be "released" at some point this year. The uploader also "can't say" how they got hold of this.
"Release is not on me, I cannot publish this. I've been told it'll be released in 2021."
So, what do you think? Would this have done the legendary N64 shooter justice? Share your thoughts down below.

With a new bond movie coming out couldn’t Microsoft and Nintendo settle their differences, add cross play and get the bond license. Everyone talks about licenses being so hard to get yet 1up arcade manages to get all sorts of deals done and they are a fraction of the size of either Nintendo or Microsoft.
Yeah I heard about this, interesting...
My face, wathching that video.
I don't know how true this is, but I remember reading that Nintendo and Microsoft were collaborating on this game and Nintendo was like "This is stupid, why are we making an Xbox game that won't run on Wii?" and cancelled it.
I guess they could finish it and release it now that they have a console that can run it, but I doubt it.
Yikes, the game needs a full makeover before I'd consider it at this point. N64 games mostly have aged terribly. Just upping the resolution doesn't cut it.
Pierce Brosnan outake footage of the golden eye movie sequel that got cancelled https://youtu.be/4vFTMjYJTnY
(I'm joking, but this SNL pierce brosnan clip is great 😉, and classic will farrell)
@FredsBodyDouble activision released a remake and people hated that. I was happy but most people complained it wasn’t the original. I’ll take either the activision one re released which wouldn’t be hard since it ran on 360 or this one. Whoever wants my monies.
Watched the live stream, Runway looks awesome.
@FredsBodyDouble to be fair I think keeping it like is was intentional to appeal to those who grew up with the original game. Not every game needs to have the latest visual as long as it plays well and is a smooth experience.
@sixrings funnily enough I really enjoyed that game, the multiplayer was something I'd often spend a lot of hours on and the music def had that cinematic quality with the way it shifted depending on who was winning.
@CEObrainz I didn’t play the activision game in HD so would like that game. But I’m general I like to FPS activision makes. I’m very frustrated their isn’t a lot of competitive shooters on switch. Doom, Wolfenstein, borderlands are all story driven FPS. I’d like a game where I can shoot my best friends and cause the same hate as a blue shell.
@sixrings neither Nintendo or Microsoft own the rights to the James Bond franchise
Theres currently a new Bond game in production from the Hitman crowd.
So, the reason this game doesn’t exist has nothing to do with disagreements between Nintendo and Xbox. It’s all because of EON
Welcome to another episode of "Bring Rare Replay to the Switch".
@Roibeard64 I understand they don’t hold the rights. But I don’t believe the hitman contract is exclusive. Microsoft or Nintendo could reach a deal if they would settle their differences and open their wallets.
@sixrings Unfortunately most of the competitive shooters on Switch tend to be Free-to-Play games, from what I've seen. Overwatch, Fortnite, etc.
@Jersa7Darkangel paladins is the best of the bunch, but nothing really to scratch the battlefield or call of duty itch.
@sixrings it probably is exclusive for a set time. Like no developer wants to have a competing game in same franchise released at same time.
Like you didnt get previous Bond games like Nightfire having a competing game that's not good for business. Would make having the rights to make a bond game worth alot less and possibly saturate demand for the franchise
there's great money to be made if they just released this on Xbox/Switch platforms digitally for like £15. a ton of people would buy. EON or whoever clearly don't like money.
Release this game!
@sixrings IO Interactive literally just got the Bond license to do Project 007 so that's not happening any time soon
@Roibeard64 @TheFrenchiestFry wouldn’t the io game be something like three years away. So if Nintendo and Microsoft had their act in gear and said let’s do this the first half of 2021 your belief is that couldn’t happen. That’s really pathetic if true. And I hope we have a switch 2 so I can play the new io bond when it does release.
I played this game on my N64 a few months ago.
It really didn't age very well. Graphics aside, the controls are a mess, and the gameplay a bit inconsistent.
I remember enjoying the multiplayer 20 years ago but I doubt me and my friends would enjoy it again.
@sixrings Don't bet on that game coming to anything Nintendo related. At least not natively in the absolute best case scenario
Hitman has pretty much stayed away from Nintendo for virtually all of their installments excluding the 2nd one in the original series, and neither of the other World of Assassination games are on Switch either. Plus since Hitman 3 was cross gen, it's highly likely the Bond game will only be on PS5/Series X|S/PC
There's also no chance Microsoft and Nintendo can court Danjaq regarding the rights to make anything Bond related, let alone GoldenEye related due to IO Interactive currently being the possessors of the license. It's also why the new Spider-Man games are only on PlayStation and he only shows up on other consoles through games where he isn't the main character
@TheFrenchiestFry well I just googled and I didn't find one site saying the deal was exclusive. Perhaps it is but I didn't see anywhere that conclusively stated that. Perhaps they went the route of Disney and simply licensed out the brand on a game by game basis after what happened to the Star Wars games under EA exclusive deal.
It's such a singular experience, not just in terms of FPSs on consoles, but for licensed games, spy games, and showing how the N64 hardware could really be utilized. A high resolution port to XBOX and Switch would be a dream come true.
@Roibeard64
The IO developed game is 2 to 3 years off. If this released this year there would be NO competition.
I thought the game was already remade on the Wii?
Could they remove anything bond related and call it something else?!
James Pond - Goldendie 0011
@asmi8803 maybe but the music is a big part of the game.
If they released the original Goldeneye on Switch, I would legitimately pay $100 for it. I love that game and never get tired of playing it. But having it playable on an HDTV would make me so happy.
There was a remake on Wii many years back. In all honesty it's multiplayer wasn't good enough, but the actual game itself was pretty damn good....but like most Wii shooters it just wasn't good enough looking and didn't control well enough to show off what the Wii was truly capable of doing. The best two examples of what the Wii shooter library SHOULD have been like is the "Metroid prime 3"/"Metroid prime trilogy" and the short but absolutely gorgeous looking and perfect controlling "Red steel 2". If the early Wii games were like "red steel 2" the landscape of games, esp third party would've been so different. Motion controls wouldn't have become a jhoke about waggling and WiiU wouldn't have failed. Sometimes I wish I was in that branch timeline and see what "should have been" for the Wii and wiiU, I gurantee that dimension has a great "GoldenEye 007" remake....
The models, AI and sound effects are just as bad as I remember it. And yet no one ever managed to make a Bond game as good as this one. I'm not sure if it is nostalgia, or if this game was just incredibly good. In any case, I'd buy this and a Perfect Dark port to switch in a heartbeat.
@sixrings they dont need to tell you what deal agreed was contracts between companies arent public knowledge they only tell you what they want or what leaks. I'm sure with the recent announcement they dont want to dilute focus by releasing another one.
@TheFrenchiestFry completely agree with you
@Roibeard64 Disney has no problem having multiple Star Wars games under development. There’s room for more than one. Another reason I’m not shocked mgm is always on the brink of bankruptcy
@sixrings they gave it too EA for years and the James Bond licence isnt as vertisle as Star wars. Its shooting games and there was a racing one once.
Star wars has everything from shooters, beat em ups RTS racing and dancing motion controls games. They arent one for one.
Even Chess once the only thing I've not seen is a star wars dating sim and it possibly might exist for all I know
@Roibeard64 well easily someone like activision could do a FPS game while io did a stealth game. Ubisoft didn’t think we’re making splinter cell there’s no point in making ghost recon. Also capcom released street fighter collection. Now an arcade collection with street fighter. While making a new street fighter. Things can compliment each other. And if io needs to have exclusive rights to sell its bond in fear of a 64 port stealing its thunder then that is sad news for its own game.
Why do people always blame Nintendo for cancelling this?
The game is literally in license hell. Watch the video, graslu has links to an interview where it is properly explained.
Goldeneye is still my second favourite fist person game
Perfect dark being number one
Still love the n64
This is so tough to watch knowing we never got it and will never get it.
i never understood why this game was a favorite for such many players .....it's a linear FPS with autoaim ....
@Arkay I dunno. Microsoft seems to be friendly. They were also able to secure the Indiana Jones rights. They own rare who made the n64 game. I’m pretty sure they could get the bond license if it isn’t exclusive or when the io deal runs out. They managed to get perfect dark running on the 360, the one and the series s consoles. So Nintendo is the one who needs to give the thumbs up but they seemingly are unwilling to do that.
@BlackenedHalo often I play games with my sister and brother in law. They are not gamers. So they prefer simpler games. They would love to play this on one of our game nights.
I would love a full remake. This was a bit underwhelming.
I never played golden eye so I will play the remake.
@Snatcher enjoy taking out the ps3 360 or Wii... that's where it is
@sixrings There are no differences. It’s not a Nintendo decision. It’s EON who is saying no
@Dringo Yep, exactly right. EON and MGM would have to agree. The thing is though, they will never proactively do it. Nintendo and Microsoft need to put forward the proposal. They likely already have done, but a bit more effort and this would get signed off in a heartbeat.
@nocdaes So Phil Spencer has tried it twice. First back in 2007/8 when this was first made. And then again for Rare Replay.
EON don’t like the old Bond games. Barbara Broccoli has been quoted for saying they were violent for the sake of being violent (which is a bit rich for the makers of James Bond).
Maybe all the money they’re losing delaying No Time To Die will change their minds
Lol so empty seeing it like this. It need a total remake, or just release the original for nostalgia.
My life would be complete if I was able to play this on switch or Xbox just whatever. It’s amazing! Still my favourite shooter of all time
@DK-Fan I don’t agree at all I can still play this no problem and it still puts a smile on my face. I can’t play modern shooters with a controller because of the n64 it just feels wrong. Gyro has helped me so much. If there’s no gyro I’m totally useless and I put it down to my n64 roots. Mouse and keyboard or gyro I’m fine.
@Shiryu Whats with his face LOL?
It will be leaked online in the coming months, can be played using the Xenia emulator. Who cares about the licence holders, EON/MGM, the game will be leaked and there will be nothing they can do about it.
@sandman89 I never understand the complaints about the controls in GoldenEye, when they’re basically identical to Resident Evil 4 and that is still regularly held up as one of the best games ever.
Then maybe you shouldn’t be living heeeeere!
I love this game and would love this remake.
My friends and I still play this game multiplayer to this day.
@FredsBodyDouble your talking blasphemy right now and I want it to stop
@sixrings It's not only Microsoft and Nintendo, but also IO Interactive, that now holds the rights of the James Bond Games, and EON Productions, the owners of the Bond IP.
I watched about 9 minutes of this two-hour behemoth, and overall it looks promising. The increased detail in the backgrounds was something I noticed right away, and the music was clearer than I remember too.
Well the video wasn't leaked online like the headline says the guy who posted it had teased that he had access to it for some time leading up to do the livestream so it wasn't like he did it anonymously.
Also many people seem to think the reason why this version never seen the light of day was to do with Nintendo and Microsoft not being able to come to an agreement. When that has nothing to do with it as it was to do with those who held the bond license at the time. Nintendo would have nothing to do with a game they didn't hold the license for and didn't own the developers at the time that being Rare. If that was the case Nintendo would continue to own the rights to all Rare game IPs made while they worked for Nintendo which they don't since they retained all of that when Microsoft purchased them. Rare nor Nintendo had any say in the James Bond license and it was up to Microsoft to come to that arrangement which they couldn't.
@Edu23XWiiU that is the current situation... for years Nintendo had a HD console... The Wii U and they could have figured something out with Microsoft. Is everyone here really under the belief that IO was a better deal maker than Microsoft and or Nintendo? Thats laughable. Nintendo simply didn't want to make a deal.
@sixrings @Roto13 there’s no truth in that at all. Nintendo never backed out, the Rare Goldeneye remake release not happening was due to licensing issues, Microsoft/Rare and Nintendo didn’t have the rights to 007 at that time, so they could not release it.
@locky-mavo so Nintendo and Microsoft were not capable of getting the licensing? I guess they are incompetent. IO managed to get bond. Microsoft managed to get Indians Jones. Ea managed to get Star Wars. 1up arcade managed to get ninja turtles, mortal Kombat, nba jam, Star Wars, marvel and a bunch of other games. I guess 007 is impossible to get unless you’re the hitman developers.
I'm really looking forward to what IOI has going for their spin on 007.
@sixrings once again, read the video description, Nintendo has nothing to do with the cancellation or any "thumbs up".
Hoping they reach an agreement to get this on xbox and switch...but probably not happening.
I just want an online multiplayer game where I can hide in the toilets. Is that too much to ask
Honestly, Nintendo, Microsoft, and whoever currently has the video game rights to the series should sit down and come to some agreement. I can see this as a multiplatform release.
@Arkay I don’t think I said they were responsible for cancellation. But I did say they had ample time to figure out how to work together with the license holders and Microsoft to get this rereleased on both Nintendo consoles and Xbox consoles. I suspect they don’t want to have their games on Microsoft consoles so they never went out of their way to make these type of deals happen. Surely they are competent enough to get deals done when they want to.
Watching this with a mix of nostalgia and annoyment, I don't think we'll ever see that again on a Nintendo console or maybe after all the intellectual property rights expire in 4000 years.
I had no idea the guards were after James when Natalya was deactivating the satellite in the Control mission. Standing on the upper platform and luring them away from her would have made things way easier 20-odd years ago.
People love to knock Goldeneye especially those who did not experience it when it came out but anyone around in that era knows what a masterpiece it was. This remake is from 2007 and looks great regardless, would buy it in a second!
@sixrings Barbara Broccoli said in a recent statement she didn’t like the old Bond games. You also need to get the likenesses to all the actors from the movies. It’s a huge licensing mission.
Whereas for IO’s game, they’re not using any movie actors.
But this has nothing to do with Nintendo. They just said yes. It was on Microsoft to sort it out. And as Spencer said, it just became impossible
Happy this mess never got released. Looks like crap
@Shiryu
It’s his hand lol
A revolutionary FPS stuck in licensing hell is disappointing. Being one of the very first to introduce modern FPS camera controls, I'm genuinely disappointed it's at this current state.
@sixrings no, too many people have their hands on the game's licensing rights. That's why GoldenEye didn't come out on the Virtual Console on the Wii, and this remastered didn't come out on the Xbox 360. Now, Nintendo and Microsoft have a great relationship, but someone else has the rights for the Bond games now, and that will surely get in the way of the release of something like this game.
we need this remake on switch!!
EON (who own the rights to the Bond franchise) are no doubt being a stick in the mud in regards to this.
I’ve had dealings with them in the past and they are notoriously protective of the brand. Understandable in some ways, but very frustrating in others.
I ploughed more hours into the original N64 Goldeneye than any other game on that console.
Like so many others that were lucky enough to experience it at that time, both the single and multiplayer elements were revolutionary at the time. Those were the good ol’ days for sure. We got spoilt rotten back then.
A Lylat Wars (Star Fox 64) remake would be amazing. Let’s hope Nintendo come up with the goods on that one day...
You can never go home again. The older I get the truer that gets.
@DK-Fan
Can i ask whats so bad about the Controls?
I'm curios
Never played Golden Eye, but having other Shooters on the N64 the Controls are in total really good, the C-Buttons are for Movement (like WSAD on PC) and the Aiming is good with the Stick.
@DK-Fan You played on the 1.1 control scheme, didn't you?
Rookie mistake.
@Jhomesjones fully disagree, GE Wii was amazing it is the BEST shooter of the console and one of the best looking games. Hooked up my Wii to an HDTV and the Dam and Facility levels look fantastic, not sure about the splitscreen but the online multiplayer was amazing it had a very strong community and people are trying to revive it, aiming with the wiimote it made you feel that YOU are James Bond.
They shouldn't release this, unless they charge something like 120 £. I would play this so much, it would displace my buying other games. If it was on the switch, mind you.
